Most migration I've seen is not from disaster areas but from cities that are failing. We're talking Detroit, Chicago etc. I think of it as 'Black Flight'. People are realizing these cities are failing and full of crime/violence. The city I live in is actually or was pretty nice for a metropolitan city, you just had to stay away from your inevitable 'No Go' zones(any street named after MLK etc.). Now it seems even decent renting areas have section 8's moving in all the time. It blows my mind how some of these people afford to live in this area.

I know know the polital leaning of about everyone in my life. Through the obama years it was only the loud 'political types' (15%). I am referred to as brother every few weeks now instead of maybe yearly.

Wish I would have seen this before posting. Something has happened, in my opinion, to the welfare programs in the past 4 years. I was going to hold this back because it will most likely give away where I live but fuck it.

An example of some of this shit are a group of people that live in my apartment complex. Like I said I make a decent wage, it's a bit above the national average and my rent takes about 1/3rd of my monthly take home. So when I see someone living in the area that from what I can tell doesn't work my spidey senses start tingling. Add on to that that I see these people consistently gambling at a nearby gas station(sometimes 3 or 4 of them) just hammering away at blackjack or kino you really have to start to wonder how the fuck they can afford rent/utilities/food etc.

That's how it seems to me. That cycle has always been around as it's the reason white flight exists but what I'm seeing appears to be incredibly rapid. With the age of apartment living becoming the norm a whole area can experience 20 years worth of white flight in 3.

All of this is incredibly disturbing to me. It brings into question how this can be used to shape and manipulate cities. You have an area you want to take over? Make them accept section 8, within 5 years it will be completely demographically changed and ready for demolition. In fact tax payers would probably be asking for it.

Mega cities are becoming a thing, I drive down the freeway remembering what this city used to look like. Houses, parks, families going for walks and now all I see are large apartment structures, convenience stores and people who have absolutely no appreciation for this land/area. The data is available for anyone that wants it. The main rule I have seen with regard to government data is that it cannot be used to isolate individuals… funny right? Honestly, learn to code, learn how data works. There is no easy path man.

If you want to get into methodology, that's rough. Either go public info or get an in at a university near you and show that you are good with data, provide a good reason for access to that data(social engineering skills) and do the work yourself. There is no easy way, it takes a bit of know how and the ability to use it.

Has little to do with the federal government. The bipartisan 2015 FAST act has helped a bit but its mainly states doing what they can on infrastructure with the lack of funding forcing them to push projects onto multi decade timescales.

So far all Trump's hebrew economic advisors have come up with on infrastructure is "asset recycling" (bribe states to sell off infrastructure) and "public private partnerships" ( socialize the costs, privatize the profits agreements in exchange for private sector investment). For the latter, if there's no profits to privatize, the private sector isn't interested (that means rural infrastructure gets the shaft).

This isn't much better than Obama's diversion of infrastructure funds to things that were clearly not infrastructure.
