the soundtrack is good but repetitive. everything else is shit though. especially the dialogue. the blatant attempts at emotional manipulation really rub me the wrong way, like taking candy out of the bowl, or the CRAAAAAAAAAAAAWLING IN MY SKIN during the sans fight. that and the fact you can't kill everything in genocide route makes tumblrtale a solid 3/10 for me. to be fair it's probably better than that, maybe a 6/10.

Reminder that Undertale also rode the hype rocket due to its one year delay and basically goomba stomped MGSV in terms of little shit to find thanks to the FUN value. Because of both of these instances no one would shut the fuck up about it until it hit the mainstream.

Undertale was a genuinely decent game that was carried by the charm that resonated with a lot of people. That same popularity had a negative effect on those who hadn't played the game before encountering its fans, which is very understandable but ultimately they should know better than acting as if the game is bad by association or that any cuckchan rumours about it are true. It became popular because it was easy to play and its charm resonated with a lot of people.

Toby hasn't said anything in this blogpost he hasn't said already, but I am glad he still holds these beliefs. The game was something personal to him and he wanted it to be valued on a personal level; that, atop of a wad of cash, meant he got what he wanted out of it.

This. It's also telling to me how aware Toby is of the game's faults - I always felt he was aware that, at its heart, it didn't hold up well in repeat playthroughs and was better left as a memory.

He also called this. Toby also made the right call in keeping his head down for the most part.

Good on him for accepting that. I hope his next game is unrelated to Undertale entirely just so its fans can enjoy the game a bit more peacefully.

I only played Undertale once, and that was for true pacifist. I thought it was full of heart, the battle system was fun and left room for creativity, and the soundtrack was good. The game was clever at how it got you in the mood for a joke, for some sad scenes, some horrifying scenes and some uplifting ones too. It did what it set out to do, but there was lots more room for improvement. The true ending feels rushed, and each fight is exciting at first but becomes dull on repeat events since you've learned how to spare a monster and have memorised their patterns. But unless you go for Genocide, then the game doesn't overstay its welcome. I have good memories of it because I didn't waste time on the fans or the haters and just enjoyed it for what it was.

Best battle is Mettaton EX > Omega Flowey >= Asgore = Sans.
Best chapter is Snowden but the best area is New Home.
Best character is Asgore but Flowey needed way more screentime.
Undertale > ASGORE > Megalovania >= Hopes & Dreams > rest of the OST in any order.

Anyone who knows anything about Thief, or DMC, or any other good game are typically those who have at least picked up the fucking controller and played through it. I played it before it got popular, and I thought the writing was so bad that I couldn't just ignore it (and this is coming from someone who managed to ignore even Phantasy Star Portable 2's shit story), that the concept of a tainted save file ruins the player's ability to explore multiple options during replays, and that it was retarded to hide 80% of the plot from the player until the last boss of a true pacifist run. None of these criticisms have anything to do with the fanbase or the people who hate the game. As a game, Undertale's flaws are just too many and too grave to call it anything but bad.

It was okay. I liked some of the characters, and there were bits that made me smile. The gameplay was engaging, and occasionally challenging, but too sparse. However, there's no real replay value to speak of outside of seeing all the endings, which the game discourages you from doing anyway.

Meanwhile, in the neutral routes, there are layers of depth on how things can turn out even during the game.

The reason I got into Undertale is because its demo was intriguing. It felt like something fun and unique, full of detail and intriguing ideas. If I'd just seen threads about people talking about it or some other, similarly disconnected way of learning about the game, I might have dismissed it, but instead there was a demo, I played it, and I got on the hype train.

Demos are so rare nowadays and it's a crying shame. I think that that's the biggest catastrophe of Steam Early Access; forcing people to pay for demos severely gimps their ability to reach people who might just be looking for something new and interesting, but have no way of knowing whether what they're getting into is good or not.

So yeah, this is a quiet plea to any game devs who might be listening: release demos. Demos sell games. Fuck trailers, fuck promotional materials, fuck everything else, if you want to sell a game, release a good demo. And if you can't do that, you might consider improving your game because it probably sucks.

It's a tough call. Undertale put out a fantastic demo and got 10 times what its crowdfunder asked for, but how much of that was the demo and how much of that was the pull that Toby had with certain communities?
Likewise, what other crowdfunders put out test material for gamers to get an idea of what they'd be backing? The only game that comes to mind for me is Indivisible, and that was just an alpha that probably won't represent the finished product too well.

All Flowey needed was one more appearance, just fucking one. Have him pop up at the waterfall amongst all the echo flowers, taunt you about what you've done so far, how you're fucked with Undyne and drop some hints to foreshadow what happens next. That would have made me happy. Ideally he'd have had fuckin' more but I'd have liked that much.

I really want to believe that, but then why not let you specify a gender along with your name? Switching he/she and him/her and such is incredibly easy, and I doubt he'd leave that out due to sheer laziness and no other reason. I'd also have really liked different main character sprites that were more specifically male and female too, instead of that generic one that looked bad either way, but I can see justifying that as a workload thing. Sprites are more work than coding in the he/she switch. Though even then, I'd still say it's lazy to make one androgynous MC sprite instead of a male and a female version.

Anyway, I really don't like the whole "genderflexible" interpretation one bit, but if Toby didn't intend that, it wouldn't have taken much work at all to definitively establish the player choice thing. That he didn't indicates he at least wanted to appeal to the progressive crowd, if not internally embracing it.

Increased demand for demos would suck though for artists who need the crowdfunding money to hire a coder in the first place. Then you need money to hire a programmer, but you'd also need a programmer to make a demo to get money in the first place. Quite a conundrum.

It's basically a Game Maker RPG where you have the option to not kill any enemies. It's charming and has decent characters, but it's a game where it's obvious that there's some wasted potential.

Or just left on autistically long for the sake of screenshotting, Undertale doesn't seem to be a very intensive game for your computer.

So the entire claim of why this game is good is because of "sexual pronouns", gay characters, the ability to kill or not kill enemies*, and some spoilery stuff that the game does somehow make the game "progressive" and GOTY? Even that last point alone doesn't sound like it deserves GOTY status.

Even the option to fight/be a pacifist isn't that revolutionary you could do that in Deus Ex or MGS (and more) and journo's seem to be treating it like it's the first game to ever do that for some annoying reason.

It's the third best game of 2015 after MGS 5 and Witcher 3. It was simple and fun with a lot of visible love poured into it by the creators.
