Did ‘Final Fantasy VII’s’ Aerith Have To Die?

archive.fo/pin2E

Because she had to pay for shoehorning herself into your party for that ancients dungeon.
>he answers the question in a shit blogs thread

I was more laughing at the fact that the bigass picture they used for the article was a picture of Lightning in her FFXIII-3 Aerith outfit.

When have items/magic been able to reverse actual death? KO status implies incapacitation, not that the character is dead, so it's silly to assume that the same items or abilities could also bring people back to life.

If they can't bring people back to life why can they kill undead

how the fuck does hollywood kill people?

Lightning is the Lightning of FF7.

Fuck, that's a good point.

She had to die, but the disappointing part is that Square never put in a cryptic way to revive her like everyone used to bullshit about. Not that she needed to be revived, but that would have been an interesting addition to a game. Such a dramatic death having an obscure and only hinted at revival procedure would have been great.

thank god they didnt

In the earlier versions of Final Fantasy it was much more explicit that KO'd characters were actually dead and and were being resurrected.
The real question is why does no one think to drag any the bodies of the decedents of the sages to a church after Dhoulmagus/Rhapthorne ramrods them to death? Such a pity…

There has never been a good video game story.

Endless rehashes and reboots of old franchises that nobody wants instead of telling new and interesting stories.

Why exactly? Do you somehow consider her complete death more artistically appealing, or is there some other less faggy rationale?

and these clowns still wanna talk about aeriths death?

How the fuck did he know that, yet still miss what Kitase said about it? Aerith was killed because he wanted to include a theme about how someone can impact the world even after they're gone.

Not right away. The cliche is that the protagonist arrives too late to find a dying character still conscious, they share parting words, then the character dies.

Actually even some of the more recent games state out and out you're fucking dead if you hit 0 HP. I remember Final Fantasy Tactics A2 even directly bringing up that "it's a wonder anybody dies at all" between white magic, Judges and their Laws keeping deadly combat relatively consequence-free, easy access of Phoenix Downs for adventuring guilds, a guild alchemist being able to make potions, and other such things.

Who cares, FF7 is shit.

Missed your chance for the mandatory first-post-is-a-sage-shitpost bit that's been going on lately

...

undead usually don't die either
if you play something like ff tactics advance, they turn into tombstones and return to battle after a few rounds

...

Such a long article when it can be summarized with a single quote.

Having lost a best friend suddenly, I'm sure unknowing FF7 players got a real glimpse of what it feels like, to the extent it can be felt for fictional characters. Sounds like bretty gud writing.

Hell, probably. Maybe some of the more masochistic Humes, Gria, Seeqs and Vieras too. Pretty easy to make torture-porn knowing they'll be fine right after and they might legitimately enjoy it.

tactics A1 already introduced the Jaghds where people die for real because there is no judges during combat

but in A2 you have fucking Frimelda who was turned into a Zombie and then back into a Hume
it's hard to take the concept of death serious at all anymore in any Final Fantasy

Eh, blame them trying to tie Tactics into 12. Vaan, Penelo and a couple other FF12 characters were shoehorned into FFTA2 for no readily apparent reason, contributed nothing and dragged down the overall plot when they actually had interaction, which is a bit of an eerie parallel to how Vaan was shoehorned into FF12 in the first place.

Tl;dr Vaan's very presence shits up whatever he's in.

...

yeah that was really fucking gay
you couldn't even turn them down
they're useless in mid and late game and can barely learn any skills

...

Pretty much I always end up completely ignoring new recruits in favor of grinding to the top with all the guildies I started out with anyways. Always end up with something along the lines of a beefed up Dragoon with some support magic for starting Bangaa, Red Mage/Assassin (I think, been a while) for the Viera, long-range Ultima spammer for the Moogle, and dual-wield Flair Paladin for the protag.

Thank fuck you at least have the option of ignoring almost all of the unique guildies, if it forced you to have Vaan/Penelo in your party I think I'd fucking scream.

What bothers me the most is that they killed her in a way that many people could actually live through with medical attention. She was impaled from her back and through her stomach, avoiding all vital areas in the chest cavity. You can definitely live from that with medical treatment. Even more unbelievable when you realize there's healing magic and there's no way they could have got that far without said magic or healing items.

All they had to do was show her getting stabbed through the chest. Dying from that would have been way more believable.

...

my nigger
Paladin with Peytral, excal2 and Sequencer
I'm playing it again for 100%
My Viera is usually my Summoner/Healer
A NuMou for Alchemy and Illusionist skills to cover the whole map
the rest just depends on how I played the game
Cid never makes it into my party because he starts as Guest and comes back way too late in the party, by then I just replace him with a Bangaa
If the game gave you Montblanc earlier in the game he'd be my main Moogle just because I liked him in A1

I take Frimelda in every time tho even if I don't do 100% because she a cute

I did not know about this character.

Paladin's just too fucking good, even without taking into account Dual Wield and Flair. A handful of holy attacks and the ability to kick in undead dicks, high-damaging Knightswords and heavy armor, and tanky stats besides.

Toss in the Dual Wield and their output's friggin doubled right on the spot, toss in Flair and they have access to all but one or two elements with elementally-typed physical strikes that ignore resistance to their spell variants, have a low MP cost and do high damage, typically with a chance of inflicting some statistical effect (even up to ones as powerful as Doom/Death for that Dark element slash).

I've lost quite a number of friends and family members in the past ten years due to random illnesses or other health issues. You just stop feeling anything.

after a while mp isn't even an issue anymore when you get the perk of mp channeling, where you get 20 mp each turn for upholding the law :^)
combine that with half mp on an Illusionist and you can wipe the whole map in 2-3 rounds
I usually don't go for flair but instead for the fighter abilities that give me stuff like aura blast that I has good range

what I really would've liked to see was more references to A1 if they already bothered to put in characters like Montblanc and Ezel, especially Montblanc

spoilers mate
wtf I hate rpgs now

they gon have a dlc to save dat ass in da (((Re)))-Make tho

oh shit i ain't kno they wuz in there like dat tbh.

dey jus forced in there not like cloud in fft?

I'll have to remember the Illusionist bit, I typically ignore most of the spellcasters that aren't healers.

I think they were caught in an odd place with connecting it to A1 beyond one or two bit characters since A1 goes with the Final Fantasy book transforming a chunk of the real world and changing townies into Bangaa, Nu Mou, etc. while leaving the people that wanted an escape from reality in a position to make a name for themselves in the new world as overall a curse to be broken, while A2 treats it as being a proper world inside the book itself that's affected by the passage of time at Narnia speed (Luso's years spent in Ivalice were a blink of the eye real-world time). They'd already have to start retconning A1 stuff if they wanted to connect the two any further than Montblanc and a handful of others, and they were too busy waving their dicks to FF12 besides.

when you complete the right quests, they want to join your party and you can't say fuck off
if your party is full, you gotta let somebody go to take them in

it's a shame
I bet some super autists could make sense of all that stuff, but the official response would probably be "it's magic n shit"

...

Stop making my dick feel weird.

WAS THERE EVER ANY DOUBT?
LIGHT CONQUERS ALL!

Really, I just miss Viera and hope they show up again in the franchise as a playable race (full female, no bullshit male Viera characters suddenly thrown in from nowhere)

Absolutely not

Who cares, FF games read like they were written by a teenager.

So the death spell knocks out characters instead of killing them, even though it's called death?

Think before you type you handicapped fuck.

Funny joke video game logic! XD

On another note, why is Dragon's Dogma so great?

The only thing I hate about Viera is that its the only non human race you get in ff12 … and its jist a humab with rabbit ears

They didn't even use a phoenix down. Cloud probably just wanted Tifa's poon instead and wanted an excuse.

...

She's OP as fuck too, comes with Dual Wield, full Paladin Skillset and great stats.

Moogle > Bangaa > Nu Mou > Viera > Hume >>> Seeq

I want to argue with you for the sake of it, but that logic is pretty solid.

Consider Final Fantasy 4, where half the cast dies and returns to life. It removes impact and consequence. FF5 had the same problem, for a slightly different reason. If there's one thing FF7 did right, it's keeping dead characters dead. Except for Rufus, who they revived for the Compilation fanfiction cash grab.

Don't worry user. You'll be able to ressurect her in part 3 of the remake if they even kill her this time.

Course inb4 they pull some shit like killing off Cloud instead.

>no memes about reviving alys

maybe they should revive my interest first

Every thread

Meant to quote
Fugging hell

Not as much as Lightning has to die.

lightning is one of the only things going for this series. i guess you just like to watch things burn

FUCK OFF TORIYAMA

I want lightning autist to leave.

youre given the world, no - the heavens. and you still manage to find an issue with it. what kind of damaged person finds flaw with perfection?

Lightning is best girl

finally someone with an ounce of sense on Holla Forums. its like were being raided

Toriyama pls

Just dump the porn already, goddamn.

I still don't know the context of that image.

Wow spoilers much?

Was she autistic?

Flair's skills only works off the main hand weapon
It's better to use Flair with black mage's Geomancy since it cuts the enemy's elemental resistance letting your Flair's hit for absurd damage since every fucking thing is suddenly weak to your attacks.

But that didnt work with that old guy in FFV why would it here? Have they even played FFV?

Yes, its easily one of the biggest impact moments in the franchise and helped progress the story. Materia isn't all powerful and Phoenix Downs are closer to smelling salts then miracle items. They couldn't get easy medical attention because it would require getting to the airship and then flown half way across the planet for. Airship was a skeleton crew at best not like they'd have the proper methods to keep her alive if they even survived getting to the ship dealing with the monsters/keeping the pressure on her. Damn the nitpicking bullshit.

This is dumb as shit because the game would have had no true low point outside maybe Cloud mentally breaking, which needed Tifa the childhood friend to guide him back out of the life stream. Or Barrets story arch which is depressing as shit but has nothing to do with the protagonist. Aerith death given real tangible motivation for the player for wanting to take out Sephiroth. Otherwise all the player has to go on is the original destruction of Nibelheim and threatening the world with Meteor. If you haven't noticed FFVII general plot is fairly bare bones so it needed that extra dipping point of the death to elevate the level of tragedy in the world. Plus they lose that whole ending sequence where the "useless materia" becomes the single most important aspect of the story even with Aerith passing. Remove that element you have a completely different story.

Sure they took a lot of AVALANCHE away from the player but really who gives a shit even if Jesse was best girl? Sephiroth needed to take something significant away like the innocent flower girl you meet at the very start of the game, who cares for you when you fall from the sky then proceed to be her acting bodyguard. She drives the entire first act of the game.

tl;dr author of article is retarded and knows nothing about story structure. Fuck you OP

now this is even more confusing
how do you revive someone who isn't dead
does it revive a nigga or does it wake them up/heal them?

there are a lot of cliches in characters death, aeris death is not unique.

Yes, because otherwise Cloud would have a chance at picking worst girl.

but thats an rpg tradition

thanks

It's just guro hentai

I haven't played other final fantasy games, but as far as I understood it the undead were not undead in the sense we use the term undead.

And your logic only works when there is only 2 obvious energy sources, positive and negative, that are the only factors in the well being of a human.

And then it would be stupid if nobody could die, ever, because phoenix down could just revive them

Why would anyone care about a used-goods pushy prostitute being killed?

Maybe this isn't as valid an argument in newer titles where the "realistic graphics" are removing the abstraction layer between gameplay and storyline, forcing more "action packed real-time combat" - but phoenix downs don't work on Aerith precisely because gameplay conventions and story conventions aren't equally applied to the same game world. Gameplay is only a rough representation for things that may or may not be happening on a micro level that games at the time neither had the hardware capability or budget to render fully, at least, not without sacrificing fun.

die you nigger

I still remember this moment and I hated the squaresoft devs for it. She was my healslut and then she just dies

The first connection with another character Cloud has in the game outside Jesse and Barrett. Pretty much the only character you spend any alone time with along with her having the highest relationship base stat so you get her in the date scene unless you're actively trying to go for someone else.

I never liked her much myself but I won't say I didn't tear up when I first played the game in 98 or whatever. I was young dammit. My sister and autistic cousin who watched me play lost their shit during the scene.

Yuffie only girl that matters

Yuffie would be great if she wasn't such a cunt.

Tifa. Not only do you meet her before Aerith, but she also has drastically more relational significance to Cloud, what with being a childhood friend and crush. Compared to her, Aerith is just some aggressive prostitute only barely acquaintanced with who wants to jump on Clouds dick as a replacement for Zack. Aerith a shit.

True best girl is Elena.

cute 2d cunts get a pass

Why live

...

She only wanted to make Wutai great again

Whom stayed alive and was the reason that Cloud was broken out of being clinically retarded from the lifestream, she needed to stay alive for that connection/reviving. Hell with the way Tifa acted as this watchful guardian from day 1 she is definitely the most significant character to Cloud. Sorry if I came off otherwise but you're right they have that whole bar scene with the promise that Cloud doesn't remember shit about. Tifa had to watch Cloud talk all this bullshit while keeping quiet of the reality of the situation (The Kalm story alone would be a complete mind fuck from her perspective). Real trooper that frankly doesn't get mentioned nearly enough when people bring up the game at how strong of a character she really is.

In terms of who needed to die, Aerith is it and had most impact for the overall story. Tifa dying would have just been "WELL CHILDHOOD FRIENDS DEAD THANKS FOR SAVING THE WORLD AERITH LOL" while she prayed at the core of the creator after kicking in Sephiroth shit. Would have made FF7 complete shit.

Turks were generally some of the best characters in the game.

well said, i always chalked it up to that because that separation makes sense to me but apparently not lots of other players

the toblerone is her spine

you're welcome

Agreed.

underrated post

Of course. Though, frankly, I disagree with the necessity for anyone at all to have died. Even for the sake of story convention, I don't think her death was ultimately necessary.

The story still would have been tight, impactful, and mostly the same if Aerith simply failed at calling up Holy (which she had anyways, since Meteor beat her to the punch so to speak). The low point of the story and heroic turnabout thereafter could easily have sufficed with Clouds breakdown and resurrection.

I don't know man. I just don't think Aerith dying was 100% integral to the overall story. Maybe I can only say this because I didn't, and still don't really give a shit about her death, and can't really see its overall influence on the cast/story. Unlike in FF5, when Galuf died. That shit was vital in all aspects.

My nigga.

The way I see it is that while FF7 is a solid game start to finish it doesn't really have any major impacts outside the death, you don't really have a reason to hate the villain outside his antics that never directly effect the player but him taking a party member away is pretty much the biggest thing you can do. It really does fuel the rest of the game. Although I think at this point its hard to think about a world without aerisdies.com during those early years.

I think without the death it wouldn't have had nearly as big of an impact as it did, this was pre internet spoiling the shit out of everything day 1 so it really caught people by surprise and its one of the big things people will bring up when talking about the game. I replay most ff games yearly and while I like FF7 its kind of eh, likely wouldn't have hit its popularity without it. Either way OP article is still retarded because it definitely had a purpose and overall point to it happening.

I just wonder how the remake is going to fuck everything up majority. Zero faith

you sound like an autistic 14 year old retard. how is getting your hometown and family and best friend killed not reason to hate sephiroth, plus the fact that he wants to blow up the world?

Because they're flashbacks and don't effect the player directly.

Plus quite a few JPRG does the "HAHA FUCK YOUR VILLAGE AND THE WORLD" thing.

Another reason why I like the way Trigger/Cross deals with KO; KO'd characters are put back at 1 HP after battle implying that they were merely just knocked unconscious from injury or exhaustion.

i remember wishing i could burn down the starting village in secret of mana

This is more the fault of Cloud being a completely unlikable character, who was only LARPing a much better soldier because he's such a sad-sack of shit, that even he can't stand himself. This was only compounded by Zack actually being fairly likable in FFVII:CC, which by retrospect, makes Cloud even more of a douche for trying to steal his identity and failing at it so bad.

It ended up making me sympathize with Sephiroth, if only because I wanted to see Cloud suffer some more.

I am not even a FF fag.

Even as a kid I realized Zack was cooler then Cloud

wew, you are dark

Come on bruh did you even play FF7?

ayyo deez nyckas gotta axe u sumn

can't remember if gilbert lived nao tho tbh monica

kill yourself, nigger

Nice trips

But lemme explain from brief convos with pro writers

See, there's a difference between character deaths, excluding the ones that are just fakeouts (actually not dead) and it really impacts how the audience reacts

What Hollywood usually pulls is the arc completion death, where a character's arc or purpose finishes with his or her death - this can range from a random NPC dying since that's his entire point, a character that served no purpose in the story to the audience or someone who used to be important but has done his role, such as a man on a quest for redemption after achieving said redemption

The above is what Hollywood pulls off the most

A character death that HURTS is an arc interruption death - when the character dies suddenly when there's plenty more for him to do and experience in the universe that'd influence the story and characters about them

Most really famous and impactful deaths in fiction fit this second mold, from FMA's Hughes to arguably Aerith

...

APPARENTLY YOU DIDN'T READ ANY F THE IN-GAME TEXT NOR DID YOU EVEN PLAY IT, YOU FUCKING MONGREL-MULATTO!

THEY EXPLICITLY STATE: "I tried using Cure on you, but Materia can only do so much." THATS WHAT TIFAS MENTOR SAID. THATS WHY SHE WOUND UP IN MIDGAR FOR MEDICAL HELP.MAGIC CANT BRING THE DEAD BACK NOR ACTUALLY HELP PEOPLE AS MUCH AS YOU AS YOU THINK!!

WHERE THE NIGGER FUCK ARE THEIR NOSES

WHAT IS WITH THE BEAVER TEETH

I COULD KILL THIS FUCK WITH PURE ANGER ALKDSSDNK

I don't get how people need this to be explained. Mechanics =/= story.

I seriously doubt every fight the party got in involved people patiently waiting for a fucking meter to refresh before they moved again.

Also, she got fucking impaled through the heart. You don't recover from that sort of thing.

LUDONARRATIVE DISSONANCE

Because Cloudster had enough of her shit.

Are they planning on doing a remastering of this game?

This is very irresponsible

That's why you put the stronger of your knightswords into your main hand, fampai.

And in starcraft military uses convicts as front line soldiers, what's the difference?

5 seconds of research and basic reading comprehension is all you need.

Don't you dare to argue with tumblr image.

Didn't she drown or something?

Just this once, I'll do what you say.

who cares about Aerith?

why did Nei have to die?

Ears. Very Nice

Marines were the most reprehensible criminals that could not be rehabilitated back into society. They got forcibly re-educated and if I recall correctly, permanently encased in their suits. (At the very least they were nearly impossible to remove)

SeeD were just children enlisted willingly into a military mercenary academy

Yes.

The theme of FF7 is moving on after death, Tifa moves on from her dad dying at the hands of Sephiroth, Barret moves on from being confronted with his friend dying, Vincent with his love dying from Hojo's experiments, Red13 with his Mother and Farther from when they were attacked and learning to move on from the distaste he had from his farther which leads to him learning the truth about him, Yuffie being the youngest is trying to avert to soon death of her villages economy (which as shown by the lower half of Midgar pretty much means everyone in it too) and pushes on to try and avert it and Aerith had already learned to move on pretty much already knowing her biological parents are dead and she's soon to be.

Cloud the main protagonist moves on from multiple things, he moves on from the fact he's not who he thinks he is, he moves on from the fact he's simply a failed clone, he continues to move on after the death of Aerith which is brought up multiple times later to motivate him to keep going after Sephiroth.

But I swear to god people forget this message because the one who dies that cloud has to move on from is Aerith who happened to be a party member and the many years of FF7 is over rated youtube videos and the like, having her in any way being revived as an intentional part of the game ruins the message of the story, that's why after the life stream going to the meteor you see what happens long after and not right after, it's moved on past the catastrophe.

You're not dead, you're knocked out, you don't die until you're all knocked out and there's nothing you can do to stop them.

Children are basically criminals. Being underage should be criminal offence.

Same here. Fuck those cunts.

Checked

Because Numen were designed to be disposable biosoldiers, who's only purpose was to scourge the planet and remove all resistance - then die off, so that Palm & Mota could be colonized. Nei was an aberration of a flawed prototype, a fractured mind that used the Biosystem's lab to clone herself out a new body and escape.

Even if she would have survived the fight with NeiFirst, she would have died soon afterwards anyhow. It wouldn't be until GENE perfected the Numan bio-soldier prototype 1,000 years later, and SEED later re-purposing them to be breed sows for the distribution of beneficial genetic mutations throughtout the human race - that this was fixed and their lifespans extended.

But the true reason is gameplay mechanics. She's OP as fuck in the early game, because she's compensating for the fact that players may not "return home" to gain new party members for quite some time - and didn't have a dedicated healer. So she's everything rolled into one, and levels faster than the other characters too. She's a stop-gap all-purpose until you get Amy and Anna later on.

Is Chaz gonna get cucked?

Chaz is dead.
So no, but if he lived - then yes, he probably would.

The Terrans must have had a disturbingly high proclivity towards psychopathy and criminality because there's a lot of marines and firebats in their ranks. Hardly any different from the Zerg they fight, really.

he wrote, on a board full of psychopathy and criminality.

>he wrote, on a board full of psychopathy and criminality Autism and Faggotry.

ftfy

worst of all the guy who owns that shit sees nothing wrong with the fact that he posts here

Tifa and Yuffie are superior. Aeris is worst girl. It was the best case scenario.

He's actually got pretty good taste in games, and he can suppress his faggotry enough to hold a regular conversation and you'd never know he owns meme dildos. Plus keep in mind that's over $2,000 USD right there so he obviously has disposable income

well at least there are some dragon vaginas in there

It is otherwise there's nothing to thematically balance out Sepiroth's attempt to hijack the Lifestream. Aerith giving herself up to it willingly and thus causing it to be instrument of everyone's salvation is the only way for the plot to work at a basic level.

Cloud was just Raiden ten years before Kojima came up with it.

D&d has revive spells but people still die because poor people can't afford them and most people are poor

Look faggots. You can lore-sperge all you want, but when characters are getting stabbed, turned to stone, shot at by guns, and shot at by fucking LASERS and using "cure" as a panacea/all purpose repair kit. A single stab to the back of a character and cure not working is nothing more than lampshade logic.

Also for that general from ffv, that fucker was turned to cherry pie all over the place. Cure will obviously do jack shit to heal a non existent body.

If gameplay conventions were supposed to be taken as lore, then Sephiroth would have only been able to cast Supernova once during the final boss fight - and it should have ended the game.

If a Phoenix Down revives KO, then how come it works when someone is afflicted with DEATH?
Checkmate, fags.

...

Than what the fuck were the tools of combat than, you faggot? Socker boppers? Supper soakers? Plastic swords from the local flee market? You explain how they survive laser fire and gun shots but not 1 fucking stab to the back.

Cutscene powers, you newfag.

ESL pls go

I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

He probably gets a boner every time someone posts that image.

Actually, in FF4 there are plenty of real deaths. Half the cast appears, in the usual RPG way, to die, but never in a confirmed way. That isn't the same has having them die and return to life.

Also, my point wasn't for it to be a canonical real revival, but a cool gameplay element to discover. Have you ever looked at the revival theories that were prevalent?

Oh, I'm sorry, you probably still cry when she dies. That is sad.

...

Oh, I thought it said Aeris died.
Who the fuck is Aerith and why does she look like a swedish transexual?

Oh no, it's a shame the two mage twins turned themselves to stone. If only I were able to fix it in the endgame!

Aeris is incorrect. Aerith is the correct romanization of the Japanese name. It's literally how you would pronounce "earth" (in contrast to Cloud)

Nah. Aeris/th is エアリス, Earth is アース
