If it's anything like the first XCOM (which I played on PS3), it can be extremely jarring because the game constantly pans the camera whenever you switch soldiers. That by itself was almost a reason for me to stop playing, despite that I'm used to low framerate even in action games. That one was just too much for me.

The solution would be to have a list of units to choose from, then hitting a button to confirm, then camera instantly switching to that one. That would be so fucking simple to do, I don't know why devs make such choices when they know their games can't handle it.

They fixed the framerate issues in a patch ages ago, user. There are still some mods that can cause it if the mod creators fuck something up.
I run it with around 180 mods and the framerate is silky smooth 60fps.

No it fucking wouldn't there is way to many game design choices in nuDoom for it to play like Doom. It'd need a complete overhaul from removing the retarded ass ledge grab to stripping out the upgrade system entirely, beefing up the fucking enemy count, vastly reduced HP for enemies so they're not damage sponges except for the headshot/weak point, etc., etc. to even be close. Glory Kills just breaks the flow and is the most jarring thing about it. nuDoom is just a generic FPS at it's heart.

From what I can tell, they're really shitty 3rd person shooters with terrible controls and a few puzzles and action sequence obstacle courses thrown in between the hordes of bulletsponge enemies. I am just curious, what makes this game so great? How is it different in any way to its predecessors? I've looked at some footage and it looks like a more action-oriented version of The Last of Us.

Yeah, it was weak in pretty much every regard except maybe graphics. They seem to have lost sight of the features that made the Uncharted franchise so popular, specifically the banter between the characters, over-the-top setpieces and puzzles. Dear god the puzzles in Uncharted 4 were weak as fuck. I mean, maybe I've just figured out how the developers think when they're building their puzzles, but they were fucking simple.

The dialogue was thin and tired, like the characters had just run out of things to say to eachother or they just didn't have the energy to be personable anymore. Maybe it was due to the whole 'Drake's final adventure' tone they were going for and they wanted it to be less happy-go-lucky than the previous games were, but it tarnished the overall experience.

The only real setpiece was the carchase, nothing else really stands out. Maybe the boat section at the very start of the game? None of the settings were that particularly interesting; they were certainly pretty, but they were just sort of regular, stock settings compared to the ship graveyard in UC3 or the Himalayan town in UC2 for example. Hell, you go to 2 different European castles in UC4, it's all so typical.

I think TLOU made Naughty Dog realise that it's hard to be original and it's a lot easier to just have mundane characters in mundane settings dealing with a mundane situation on a mundane journey with mundane gameplay and exceedingly mundane dialogue.
