I actually enjoyed the game, I had low hopes when I first started since the game died in 2 weeks or so since launch, but the campaign was pretty fun even for solo. Nothing too complex but it's really fun to replay missions with different characters.
I was unsure of what to feel from the design of most of the characters but I started to like some of them after playing with them for awhile. Like that penguin with the mech, he's way too OP for campaign.
Most of the campaign relies on tower defense and running from section A to section B on the map, but the game spawns plenty of enemies to keep the combat sections fast paced. While most enemies are bullet sponges, you can take them out pretty fast if you aim for headshots or critical areas. I wish there were more enemy variety. Enemies consist in 3 factions. Robots (which you rarely see), ride the bull looking dudes and edgy dark creatures. They all fall in the same category of enemy though, all factions has enemy with guns (some with snipers and some with regular rifles), enemies that run at you (some has bigger health pool than others) and even sometimes bosses are just bigger versions of those enemies. Pretty lame.
Now for PvP I don't know jack shit, I barely played it and the only ASSFAGGOTS I played was Awesomenauts. But I know you can just play with bots.
Also the game is too greedy with the season pass, it promises more characters and campaign maps (still waiting on those). It released 3 new characters since then and you can unlock them even without season pass, all you need is to earn enough credits to buy them. Except it took me 37 hours of grind to unlock 1 of those 3.
TL;DR: I had fun with campaign only

The multiplayer wasn't that bad either. It just requires ot learn the character abilities so you don't get those what the fuck just happened -moments.

I think the designs kinda are good on paper, but they would need some refinement and better execution. Lot of the issues with them is just bad craftmanship from their artists.

I enjoyed Battleborn, personally. The MOBA mode is shit, but the mode that's basically Super Monday Night Combat was really fun to me and I got a lot of time out of it, before the game finally died on PC, effectively. Bought it for $30 on G2A and I got an alright time out of it.
That said, Gearbox is a fucking awful company that has no idea what they're doing and the fact they're pretending that everything is fine with the game, when it's not, is stupid. Then again, I shouldn't be surprised. All in all, $30 for 70 or so hours isn't that bad. Not everyone will agree, but eh.

The non-human designs just hide better the questionable compositions of the characters. As said, they are good on the paper, but the executions just leaves them with more or less suffering from visual noise.
