ITT: Really cool prototypes for vidya

ITT: Really cool prototypes for vidya

Vid related, Ico on the PS1. Some of it looks pretty impressive for the hardware at the time on home consoles.

Eternal Darkness on the N64

Final Fantasy VIII's 2nd build for the N64, the original alpha test build was straight FF6 sprites with some altered and angled to give the appearance of a 3d isometric enviroment.

A cancelled arkham meets bloodborne lovecraftian, victorian Batman game: Gotham by Gaslight. For xbox 360 and PS3

Mass Effect

Biohazard 0 for N64.

Resident Evil 3.5 - The original Resident Evil 4 where Leon was infected with a "P-Epsilon progenitor virus" that was a sentient cloud of infection that could manipulate objects like dolls and suits of armour to attack you as you explore a spooky castle.

It was judged too similar to longtime rival Silent Hill and to a lesser extent the unpopular clock tower and was scrapped.

Very limited footage of the 1997 Spaceworld announcement of Pocket monsters 2 before it was taken back to the drawing board and Iwata was brought in to fit the entirety of Jhoto and Kanto onto the card as was not originally planned. He pulled it off working alone almost 22 hours per day for weeks till it was done and Pocket Monsters 2 was rebranded Pokemon Gold and Silver that we know today.

Dead Pheonix for the Gamecube. Capcom made Sony a lot of Money with its "four player online games" agreement. Most notably with Monster Hunter and Resident Evil outbreak so as the N64 was waning and the Playstation brand became the behemoth of the time they were approached by Nintendo to create "the capcom 4" for their new console The Gamecube.
These games were Resident Evil 4, Vietiful Joe, P.N 03 and Dead Pheonix. The other 3 came out to positive receptions but Dead Pheonix was scrapped with only prototype footage released and some of its models recycled for Monster Hunters PSP sequels.

Metroid Prime had a beta that was released as part of a series of demos. Its notable because players datamining all the metroid betas discovered the game was originally supposed to include Super Metroid on the Gamecube disc but this was never put on the final product for reasons unknown.

To ape on the success of Resident Evil 4's camera change Climax Studios attempted to do the same with Silent Hill of all things and make it an over the shoulder combat game aginst melting zambambos in stonewashed denim jeans.
Unsurprisingly Konami had them take it back to the drawing board and make it more of a traditional Silent Hill experience.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment for the ps1

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess before they changed it.

This is sort of a nice thread and everything but this is also a pretty horrible time to make it.
Wait at least 2 days or so, Holla Forums is in full shitstorm autism mode.

Its the best time, the sperglords are distracted by stickies.

Fair enough actually.

...

That is incredibly impressive considering the hardware.

Speaking of Zelda.

Imagine it younglings. Its 2001, last year in 2000 Nintendo -or "Ninty" as jiji's called it at the time- had shown examples of what the Gamecube was capable of including a very realistic, for the time, looking Ganondorf and Adult Link fighting in a dark, gloomy castle.
You wait till next year and here it is, the new "Legend of Zelda, title to be confirmed later".

People. Went. Nuclear.

All over the internet in the irc chatrooms, in gaming magazines and on the tv shows long gone from terrestrials channels that themselves are now all shut down and replaced by digital broadcasting people were calling Nintendo crazy and saying "Celda is childish trash that will bury this company".

It was the most hated videogame of 2001 and it wasnt even released yet, then The Wind Waker came around and even with its tedious Tri Force fetch quest and cut islands it ended up being one of the most fondly remembered titles in the series.

Yes but MUCH later.
YEARS later.
For the longest time it was the most hated Zelda title ever, it didn't change upon release, nor immediately after release.

and Twilight Princess back when Miyamoto wanted it to be a Spaghetti Western Zelda

I think it took Twilight Princess being a desperate "UHHHHHH, FUCK, LOOK THIS IS DARK RIGHT?" redesign where half its mechanics were unfinished and things like Wolf Link were uncharacteristically void of creativity and did nothing really new after the initial ability unlock that put so many off they looked more fondly on the direct sequel to ocarina wind waker was.

Final Fantasy X back before they settled on the heavy Thaiwan culture influence on the art style and only had vague 'south pacific islander' ideas for it.
It had a function where the playonline viewer allowed ps2 modem owners to connect online for a guide for the game as you played.

its like poetry.

You can sort of see the same idea in Spirit Tracks.

Peanut butter and chocolate nigguh.

If you combined the dungeon crawling of Wild ARMs with the controls of Zelda and a battle systel ala Dragon Quarter, you'd have pretty much the best game of all time.

So you want a game of Steel Ball Run then.

I heard that it was removed because Retro Studios used a third-party emulator in order to get the game to emulate on the GC

Folkore on the PS3 is to this day a niche and in some countries very rare but worth seeking out title that was originally a much darker game intended to be a spiritual sucessor to Shadows of Memories with action combat worked on under the title Monster Kingdom

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of liberty Beta trailer.

Infamous for leading to a No Mans Sky tier "dev lied, lets sue" reaction because its none existent content that is not in the game sold people on Snake fighting a giant Metal Gear Ray on the tanker. When people discovered Raiden was the main character for the majority of the game people went NUUUCLLLEAARRRRRRRR.

that texture memory, I'm in love.

A little known game from the none Barenstain timeline.

Halo. A third person shooter exclusively for the Apple Macintosh.

A last gasp for the Saturn era of 90's art style anime games, the Dreamcast cancelled game Innocent Tears was a sunrise style anime themed strategy JRPG intended to become the new Fire Emblem of the new console generation but it was never finished.

A shame because with the nostalgic aspect of this now dead art style it looks really neat.

It makes me wonder how cut down Shenmue on the Saturn would have been though, on the Dreamcast its fucking impressive as hell and beats out most current gen releases with the level of detail it has and all its various quirks.

PROJECT EGO 2001 aka Fables original footage back when Molynuex convinced the world the new 'direct X box' could run an entire rpg world that progressed in real time and seeds would grow into trees and towns would be settled, die out or turn into cities if you spent gold in them.

Truly a master of lies that inspired todd and sean to follow in his rusemaster footsteps.

A lot of games you long to try and wonder 'what might have been' had they released.

Sonic Xtreme for the Saturn/32X is not one of them.

An FMV trailer for a 'direct X box' version of the NC Soft MMORPG Shining lore that never came out

That video showed some stuff from China, so I'm guessing it would have been a semilinear action adventure instead of the life simulator with plot we eventually got.

Shenmue 3 will be cut down as well, and it won't even finish the story.
Shenmue Complete will never exist.

Sperglords that autistically follow the 'lore' before dark souls fans ruined the term know that Shadow of the Colossus is in fact a prequel to the developers previous game Ico. The actions of the protagonist set in motion the events leading to Ico and the magical ruins that encircle and trap the Colossi are the same assetts used in the Castle suggesting the queen used these to build Yordas prison.
But if you arent a Team Ico autist you would be forgiven for not knowing this. Maybe this would have been different had it been released in its original design as 'NICO' aka Ico+ni (2). You played one of a small group of riders that tackles the Colossi together on horseback. This was later changed to make it a lone rider for a more thoughtful and lonely experience to drive the player to feel a greater need to save his loved one.

I wouldn't be surprised if Shenmue 3 has less content than the first two games, the story is meant to drag on for another 2 games, or if we never even get ports of the first two games.

But a man can dream

Now that's a madman

at least he never saw his dreams end up becoming iphone appshit.

I know this will hit some of you right in the moist, palpating Nostalgia glands: The original Reveal of 'Final Fantasy XI: Another world Online'. No huge stage, no fanfare. Just the dawn of online vidya becoming the norm on little projector screens in small rooms when vidya was an experience for none normalfags only.

What a time it was.

This'll be a treat, here i am, uncle moe, while you eat.

A proof of concept Video by Konami Digital Entertainment of Japan for a 3rd Metal Gear game on PSX dubbed 'Metal Gear Solid'.

I hear thats somewhat well liked on Holla Forums now and again.

Beta footage of Majoras mask.

I'll always wonder if the whole "5 levels for each stage of grief" thing was intentional and if so what were the lead devs going through at the time to choose that immediately after Ocarina of time.

Infinity, a neat little Strategy RPG for the GBC that, like many other actually good GBC games, got completely fucked over by publishers. The devs released a prototype a few weeks ago, but it's been programmed to end fairy early on because of how unfinished it is(they still intend on finishing it someday). They also released the source code too though. Also one of the programmers worked on that Chrono trigger remake that square enix C&D'd

They failed and couldn't recreate the ATB or in battle positioning.

Did they even get far enough along to start working on that? From what i saw, all they really had was a bunch of concept art, a few models of stuff like Chrono, Frog, i think Magus and the Bridge boss, as well as music(this is what said programmer worked on), and about two maps.

They had nothing going on for a year and made up the C&D as an excuse to quit. It was basically a Holla Forums project.

Has Holla Forums ever saw a project finish?

Didn't Holla Forums make that "ironic" furshit Sonic dreams collection and Kawaii shougi or whatever the fuck it's called

Splinter Cell: ConViction was a pretty damn cool alpha; it's such a shame that the game got a director that didn't like this direction and changed it to what we got now.

Hahaha
haha
;~;

...

Faggot thread. Fuck off gook.

Jesus that's a long time to find a sage a dead thread.

Wew

Apparently, it got released on the Xbox at some point, so at least it wasn't completely cancelled.

sheeyyiiiitttt i'll have to track that down.
