Disregard the fact that the majority of combat in the European theatre of WW1 was a hybrid of earlier 19th century artillery + massed line infantry tactics and the later squad-based tactics borne out of the development of rapid-fire small arms and air warfare. The point is that they can essentially make the same game, which is very loosely inspired by the later form of combat, and then just transpose it onto a WW1 'setting' (which consists of the character's style of clothing and the flags of the participating nations).

And plenty of retards who fall for the marketing and buy it will actually be convinced that it's not just the same old Battlefield with a new skin on it.

A game does not have to be realistic in order to reflect the war it takes place in. Verdun's gameplay resembles WW1, but is not necessarily really realistic. Red Orchestra 2 resembles WW2, but is definitely far from being realistic. Also that plane gameplay looks so jerky and unnatural.
