But that's really questionable, even leaving aside the Japanese colonial rule (which made Belgian Congo look like a fairy tale) you have to remember that the Soviet (that never gave any fucks about the Far-East) troops DID left the country pretty quick but the US (and the Jap, yes some were still there) decided to stay in the South.
So the North had all the reasons to be worried and to want to reunite the South (all ideology left aside), the North of the country could only see the South regime as a continuation of a colonial invasion. In fact the US disbanded the first People Republic of Korea (which created SK flag and everything) that was a non-puppet local government allowed by the Jap colonial authorities looking for a quick transition. While the Soviets simply absorbed them and d&c them (since they were far too nationalist for Moscow tastes) which is how they could leave so fast.
And Kim Il-sung was the most popular and well known rebel leader (whether or not it's the same guy is in question but that matters little in the grand scheme of things), while the guys in the south basically spent their life abroad somewhere and could only be seen as installed by foreigners, he had way more legitimacy.

So the North had very good reasons to start the war and all the reasons to believe it could quickly gain support (there was multiple insurrection in the south and none in north already due to the repression of the original people republic) but what everyone forgets is that the war has been something straight out of hell.
