Bob's Game

Technology has come a long way since Daisuke made cave- oh wait no, he made the engine, composition software, and art assets all by himself.

Yes it is. I still use his music software to write music.

Post your music geekboy.

I'm designing a video game with the music I'm writing, so no. You can hear it in 5 years from now.

As much as I didn't care for the game, it was technically impressive that it is was made by a single man save for the music.

I want to fuck fidget

I beat CSs normal ending on a 3HP run a few days ago, feels prety good. Don't look forward to doing the same with Ballos.

Making such software does not make the game more technologically advanced.

what software is the music made on?

The dude made it himself I believe.

cavestory.org/download/music-tools.php

For Cave Story, the music was made in a progam called Organya. You can still download it from the Cave Story Tribute site. He also made a second, far improved version (Organya 205x I believe. I use a modded version of it by Girakacheezer.)

Before Organya, he made a program called PiyoPiyo. I don't know anything about it because I've never used it and don't see a reason to. But he also made a program after Organya called PxTone which is really nifty. It's definitely better than Organya, but I like the color coding in Organya more. I usually write in Organya and then export to PxTone and finish there.

Word of warning though, Organya produces .org files. So unless you know how PxTone handles the conversion and how to fix it, the midi is going to sound bad in PxTone. You mainly need to fix the panning, volume (Organya can't fully mute a note but it'll read on PxTone as mute) and the note pitches (usually on percussion.)

Of course I'm a retard and can't find another program that handles click based compositions better than these two programs. The reason I still use Organya over PxTone for the bulk of the compositions is probably because I'm autistic enough to do it.

What about a sample?

Thanks anons, didn't know that. Dude really went all out

Some Korean guy made a great game with the Unreal engine I believe. Someone post his work compared to Brianna Wu

Even after playing AM2R, Cave Story still holds it at #1.
Pixel is also a really cool guy.

Not mine, but this was made in Organya. PxTone can handle 16 bit and that includes custom made sounds. I like to do this thing where I replace all instruments with alarms and it's usually funny as shit.

Also the .wav is too large for me to post so I'm giving the link instead. I'll post something with full klaxon alarms if you want.

Dwarf Fortress might be close, though I guess there isn't much graphics/music in the game for him to have made.

Still pretty impressive for one guy.

DF is the singlemost technologically advanced indie game there is, but most of that is under the hood simulation. It's not exceptional in design though. There's a few minor problems I have with certain boss behaviour in Cave Story, but for the most part it's almost "perfect" as far as possible.
I don't give a shit about graphics and don't know shit about music so I don't rate games on those.

The credits listed more than two names though.

I remember some years ago there was this mod for Cavestory that actually added co-op and player 2 could actually swap around different characters to play as.

I hope someone here knows what I am talking about, I have been trying to find it for years.

Did you even condisering typing "cave story co-op mod" into a searchengine you lazy sack of shit?
cavestory.org/forums/threads/multicave-cave-story-multiplayer.5635/

Also somewhat on topic, anyone played Kero Blaster (Pixel's new game from last year)?

Meridian - New World was also made by one person.

did he made his own engine and tools?

...

Touhou is also impressive, but I guess programming and game design-wise it's not as demanding as Cave Story. Its fan and commercial success is remarkable though.

Dorf Fort, you fake gamer girl.

I'd rather have a fresh new design in progress that is rough around the edges than a cleanly sanded retread of the past. There's nothing impressive about cave story.

ZUN is another that comes to mind.

only ZUN and toady comes close to pixel.

There's nothing impressive about one man doing all of it by himself?

No because he's doing what hundreds have done before. It's just another platformer.

By himself. And what does it matter if it's been done before?

then why there's only three people that has made the same (an entire game using not an engine)?

I do agree a team would had done something better, but is just one guy.

What.
Good
Terrible third world grammar but that's good.
Best storytelling of any game.
Best character development of any game.

And what did he make with these tools? A rote platformer. Wow. Incredible.

Who cares if the engine was made if the end result is not impressive.

After getting into gamedev, noticing how blatant Cave Story's tiles repeat bugs me.

It's just the same old shit.

So are you one of those originality cultists who think the same thing should never be done twice?

I don't cum my pants when someone makes an indie platformer because they're quite boring and is the lowest hanging fruit in game development.

if it's so easy, then why less than a dozen guys in the world has made the same?
and only less than five guys IRL has made a game without a baby engine?
and why he's the only one that made his own tools?

have you ever made a game?

bro, I make games for fun and pixel is like a hero among indie devs.

have you ever made a game?

Who cares if it's easy or hard? I only care about the end product, and Cave Story is not a very good product.

Yeah, Pixel sure was lazy for spending years doing the entire thing from scratch by himself. And made a good game too, even if doesn't bring anything new to the table.

Where are you getting this? /agdg/ alone has had more than five people make their own engines.

Wow he spent time.
He still made a same-old platformer.

Too bad he couldn't have spent the time on making a good game.

Who cares? The vast majority of indie devs don't know what they're doing. You're one of them.

And had the skills to do everything and the drive to see the project to completion.

Just because it isn't new doesn't mean it's bad.

I don't really care about how fancy the programming is as long as the game functions, but yeah, in terms of game design, I'd say Cave Story destroys Touhou. It's gotta be way more work to make actual levels you interact with and the interconnected adventure-style structure than just purely linear "levels" that are basically just different completely non-interactive backgrounds scrolling by. Or at the very least, I personally value that type of design that goes into Cave Story a thousand times more than Touhou stuff.

Also, is Cave Story the only one-man game that has actual hand-made maps? Seems like it's always either Touhou stuff without levels at all or procedurally generated maps with one-man games. And personally I like neither. Are maps really that hard to make?

Yeah, that always bugged me too. A lot of rom hacks have that same problem, which is especially bad when the game itself has a reasonably good tileset already. The game has tiles for left edge/right edge/internal block etc, but nope, just use the generic single one-tile block over and over forever.

A rote platformer project. Wow.

It is when you're just playing another platformer in a world of indie platformers.

Then he is an unwitting heretic.

I can only name ZUN, pixel, toady, bob, the guy that made that furry disney game, kontaj, yume nikki.

maybe you can show me more guys, but 99% of indie games are made by more than one guy.
even using other people music doesn't make you into a 1MA

also the game is pretty fun.
agdg can't even make a shitty small game, less alone something like cave story.

maybe you need to give a better argument in terms of technical terms as to why cave story is bad rather than I don't like it.

I make games, so pls be technical why is bad.

He programmed everything, including the tools, by himself. He designed everything. He drew all the graphics and made all the animations. He composed the music. He wrote the story. And he still ended up with a good game.

You're just jealous because you can't do even a fraction of what he did.

What the fuck is "rote" supposed to mean? Explain now and I might forgive your ebin "bloo bloo it's a platformer so it's shit regardless of content" bait.

You said less than five people have made a game without an engine, which is wrong. Saying less than five people have 1MA'd their game is also wrong.

A lot of new devs vastly underestimate how much effort making content and refining it takes. So shitty procedural generation is often a cop out.

Yume Nikki uses RPGMaker, but it sure isn't your average RPGMaker project.

Except DF is a terrible game.
The balance is atrocious as far as any kind of builder goes, and the interface is absolute balls.

like I said, I would love many more examples of 1MA.

using an engine is fine, but is less impressive than what pixel did.

Honestly I'm too lazy to dig up more obscure examples. Don't get me wrong, what he did was impressive. I'm aspiring to 1MA a (hopefully) decent game and he's a great inspiration. Music/sound design completely goes over my head right now.

Your opinion is shit and objectively wrong.

Ofcourse I did search.
Infact I am not even sure thats the right mod.

The mod allowed you to play as king and that one villian wearing that weird crystal crown thing.

Could also swap characters as you kept playing along.

if you're looking to learn audio synthesis, look up some book on FM synthesis, maybe download some tracker.

don't use DAWS if you plan to get into audio design.
look up how to use oscillators.

Intentionally retroshit graphics; using a graphics engine to render a tileset that fakes graphics that would be poor even by ascii standards.
Possibly the worst menu system in existence with zero agreement on which buttons should be used for what purpose and far too many clicks to get anywhere.
Shit balance, 3 dwarves handle necessities for a default max sized fort, the rest can jerk off in the center for all it matters.
Random unused/unfinished shit scattered about.

Uristfags please kill yourselves, you like a shit game.

And yet, despite having nothing to show after all this time, they still act like anybody should be able to single-handedly design, code, and create all the visuals and sound for an entire game if they can just put a moderate amount of effort in. Well if that's true, what their excuse? Where's their single-person masterpieces?

…Not that I blame them for not having made masterpieces though, because doing all that on your own just isn't a reasonable standard to hold everybody to. I only blame them for not admitting that making games is A HUGE AMOUNT OF WORK, and/or that being good at coding or art alone is already a lifetime of practice. They expect everybody to be able to do it all well, when not only does it not work that way, but they themselves can't even live up to those standards.

The main problem is it becomes too easy once you know how shit works. And the GUI, but I'm pretty sure that's something he plans to work on later.

/agdg/ discourages making your own engine. And they admit making games is a lot of work. I'm not sure where the fuck you visit but it doesn't sound like it's the /agdg/ threads on here.

And all those other names were voice acting and music. The game itself was made by Dean Dodrill.

fair point

nope, he lost there.

The linux version doesn't work without x and opengl as far as I'm aware.

never ever

no but "Her Story" is

Cave story was easy baby game with great atmosphere and music and story.

Try bonesaw for a real game, with actual difficulty. Its just a platformer with a hockey player, its really tight and well made

You can.

The process of doing it yourself isn't necessarily difficult if you have some of the required skills, the most difficult thing is finding the motivation and/or discipline to keep doing it until it's done, and not give up or moving to a different project.

Most /agdg/s move to tumblr or reddit or whatever when they've successfully learned the skills to make games, because imageboards are fucking shit for both feedback and exposure.

Are you projecting user? Most aggydaggys only have 1 skill and wish to find someone who has one of the other skills (usually between art and programming). Nobody expects you to have all the skills, the reason people want you to learn the way of the 1MA is because teams almost always suck cock and implode before anything good gets made.

nah, the real problem is that everyone wants to be a games designer so they can impose their ego onto the project

if people let designers design and just stuck to the art/code there would be no problem.

we all do

ヽ༼ຈຈ༽ノ

...

I place a counter attack. Fuck off /furry/.

what is wrong with you

Has that game been completed yet?

...

Did you beat Cave Story+ on hard mode (or just play the free version with 3 HP and no rocket launcher)? If not, you don't get to call it easy. It's now not even an autistic self limitation anymore, it's part of the game itself.

Robert released something on github a few days ago, he's too jesus-y to work on the evil that is videogames now. It's now an automated c++ port of java code of c++ code of a c project for GBA homebrew. And doesn't run yet. And I don't think it actually contains the story shown in the old trailers, only what was in the demos and the new game.
But it is an MMO nowI think?

stop trying to blame boards for your problems.

Well i got to the core on that mode, but still, bonesaw only has one difficulty. Its like saying i wanna be the guy is harder than other games because it has impossible mode

When i say real game, i mean it subjectively, but to me a game that cuts out the fluff and focuses on gameplay is better.

alright thread over
dump the curly porn

Sounds good

Even the level of coding it takes to make a game in a pre-existing engine is significant though unless you have anything but the most generic of design goals. Significant enough that I wouldn't expect a person to be both good at art AND capable of that level of coding at once.

What? Show me one person who's both a top-tier coder as far as all the coding needs of an entire game AND a top-tier artist. Backgrounds, character design/illustration/(and modelling if relevant,) animation, the works Most people are at best top-tier at one aspect of all the coding or art needs of a game. If a person exists who's good at it all I haven't heard of them. And even if there is one person who can do it all, that still doesn't prove it's reasonable to expect that of everyone.

You are right about teams almost always falling apart though, I absolutely agree that doing it all yourself would be ideal. I really and truly wish it worked that way. But in practice, it seems to me 99% of people either are born with a head for coding or a head for art, and the other thing will be an incredibly painful slog they might never be competent at no matter how hard they try.

And fine, maybe I was too harsh, they don't always expect you to have all the skills, just coding. I by no means expect coders to learn art as well, but they sure expect artists to be good at coding.

Ego isn't the problem, it's not a control freak thing. (At least, not for most people.) It's that whatever your skill is, work needs to pay off in either creative satisfaction or money. Since none of us have money to pay other people, that just leaves creative satisfaction as a motivation, and that disappears if the designer wants to do apples but you like oranges. And odds are, creative disagreements happen the moment more than one person is involved. If you could actually find people who naturally agree on creative direction though, problem solved.

pick one

You don't need to be a "top tier" anything to 1MA a game. If you were, people would suck your cock with money to get your talent into their team.

I'm talking from personal experience and I highly doubt I have any special talents. I'm ok at art and meh at coding, but the only thing stopping me from finishing my games is crippling depression and lack of energy.

not him, but I'm in the same boat.
have you tried to work on your self steem, do exercise and learn about healthy nutrition?

...

Yes and no. You have to bear in mind he was holding down a job at the same time.

Got it for free, and I pirated the wii version when it came out.

Thats literally the definition of wanting to impose your ego on something. I'm using the original meaning of the term, not the overused colloquial version.

Looks like shit, fuck off faggot.

get back in /a/ you fucking faggots

Is there even a list of games made by single person?
I played plenty of indieshit but have no idea if it was made by team or by single man.
Was original Binding of Isaac only made by McMillen? If it was, it beats Cave Story.

I can't talk how many males are 1MA, but can tell you that centipede and river raid are the only games made entirely by females I'm aware off.

No and No.

Boi is a better game than cave story.
But since it's a collective effort, you can't put them against each other.

yeah, it's usually a programmer and an artist in most cases.

...

...

It has better gameplay.
They are difficult to compare, since they're in different genres, but Boi has much more variety to it. It was really crippled by retarded flash engine, and then fucked over several times since Rebirth remake.
I have no idea why that game has such troubling history.

I don't know about how many one person dev "teams" have made a game but there have been quite a few two person dev teams.

...

What about the art?

Everything that doesn't have to do with audio was done by Dean Dodrill, that includes the backgrounds and animations and what not.

Why are most 1 dev games platformers? Is it because the devs are fucking hacks who can't make anything more complex then jumping over death traps over and over again in different locations while stomping/shooting enemies?

Where's your non-platformer game?

I can't call something shit because I haven't made something? Maybe you don't belong here. Have a link to a website more to your liking, no criticism here:
tumblr.com/

No. You can't tell other people they're stupid hacks for not doing X instead of Y when you don't know anything about what game dev is like.

kill yourself you dumb underage faggot

Why don't you? What's your excuse, then?

You didn't call something shit. You called people hacks for making something manageable for a first/early project. You can call something shit without knowing the effort required to make it, but you can't call someone a hack without said knowledge.

the matter of the fact is that you don't have to be a game dev to call something shit. like how you don't need to be an artist to determine what you're looking at is shit.

and i am working on a game, user. eat shit ;^)

I agree. But there's reasons people make platformers other than "they're hacks".

how is cave story shit?

wat

Why do japs insist on making the evil villains look like pigs?
Pigs are cute

le kill urself

Pigs are gross dude.

Can we ban underage already?
If he's simply annoyed that most 1 dev games are platformers that's fine, but calling them hacks as if game development was that easy is so fucking retarded.

You can just not pick them up.

RIP AND TEAR
THE BIGGER YOU ARE, THE MORE BACON YOU HAVE
THIN AND CRISPY

Where did you learn to fly?

What are you doing here? Get back to Motherbase and lead my intel team.

You haven't seen an full groun adult pig, they're disgusting

*grown

no shit, theyre literally 3DPD.

Those are OK too

Fun fact: Did you know that porcelain takes it's name from the cowrie shell which in turn takes it's name from it's similarity in shape and color to the vulva of a loli pig?

Chihiro a cute, but the pig transformation ruins it.

...

They are vectors of all sorts of human transmissible disease. They are vile creatures, certainly not pets.

So are dogs and birds off the top of my head

Can you list your dog or bird as emergency food supply while still having a cuddly buddy without being Korean or it being a chicken? I thought not

No they aren't, just because the media had a hullabaloo over H1N1 you have been fooled. That is a rare case, pigs are way worse because theyre closer to humans genetically.
I don't need an emergency food supply because I live in a modern society with easy access to a supermarket. You're more likely to die from a viral strain of pig flu than from starvation. Pull your head out your ass you disgusting fetishist.

I want a pig as a friend and not a lover you degenerate

So does everyone else dumb enough to think they can live off a supermarket's piddly supply of food. In an honest emergency you'll be beaten or killed for your food, and that's assuming you're fast enough to get there before it's all gone.

I think that user just doesn't know what an emergency supply is and thinks society isn't going to break down, ever.

Piglets are too goddamn adorable.

i'm out.

Take a look at the current state of the world and tell me with sincerity that there is no way it can all come tumbling down.

there is no way that it can all come tumbling down

its amazing for compositions.

I'm laughing at you and your shit taste, but good job derrailing the thread faggot.

at least you didn't use the term
like every fucking vegan uses

PxTone is fucking fantastic.
It even works on Linux via WINE unlike fucking famitracker

Yeah, like laziness. You can't do anything new or interesting with a fucking platformer, everything that could be done with the genre was done in the 90s, it's a spent genre and it should just die. 3D platformers are the best because there's still room for innovation and perfection.

Platformers are one of the easiest, least-effort required games you can make, everything about them is simplistic and nigh-impossible to screw up. That's why early game devs made so many, because it was harder to make complex games and you could make a lot more games if you limit the genre down to platformers and Galaga clones. But now that the tools and the knowledge have been made accessible, literal retards are the only ones who could possibly have difficulty making platformer game. Anyone who makes platformer games anymore is a fucking unskilled hack, and anyone who praises modern 2D platformers is a fucking retard, or someone who has somehow never played a platformer game before.

A platformer is indeed an easy thing to make. A good platformer, on the other hand, is hard to make. You being unable to see the difference between a good and a bad platformer just shows you either dislike platformers in concept, or have shit taste. Most likely both.

Now you're just making things up.

I SWEAR ON ME MUM, LADDIE! "STRUTH!

It may not be more technologically advanced, but the topic of this thread requested a milestone of human capability.

Also, Cave Story was built more than once before its final release. I believe the final version as you see it was constructed within the last year of its 5 year cycle. Before that, there was the Cave Story Beta which Pixel refuses to re-release. And I'm too lazy to track down someone who has a copy (as if I could find anyone anyway).

How does it differ from the final version?

Bonesaw a bes

A BES

Quote would constantly spill his spaghetti

Did a platformer game developer rape you or some shit?
Not only is "anyone who does X is Y" a terrible non-sequitur, but you seem so insistent on it and on pulling bullshit out of your ass it seems as if that's actually what happened.
The public is nowadays more demanding than in older days, specially for platformers given how dated the format is. Like said, basically. For every successful platformer game made recently, indie or not, there are dozens that failed because they couldn't live up to the standard.

Criminally underrated post.
