What games really hooked you the first time?
What games were good enough to hook you for multiple playthroughs?

Pokemon Yellow.

dark souls 1
king of fighters 11

Here's a handful of examples from me:
Loved the noire feel, comic book intros, humor, mechanics, the level design
very interesting levels & fun mechanics
amazing atmosphere, good shootan mechanics
good shootan mechanics, technical marvel includes features many modern games lack
very ambitious, so many game mechanics, amazing atmosphere, interesting blend of themes
very comfy RPG, interesting magic mechanics, so many spells
dat fucken rope bow gimmick was great, greatest story ever kicked
all those monsters, all those traps, humor, nice levels & music
creative/interesting levels, designs were eye-popping the first time

Majora's Mask 3D
There's no reason to play the N64 version when the 3DS version exists, unless you don't own a 3DS and won't wait for the coming 3DS emulation

How does stalker's shootan and ai compare to fear's?

Smash Brothers, infinite replay value.
Metal Gear Solid 3 and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

The 3DS version has some really bland redesigns and it overall feels more generic.

>Payday 2
All good stuff with a lot of replay value.

Disagree completely, aside from every boss getting an eye added as a weakpoint

The first game I remember playing is when my dad bought me Tomb Raider and both of us played on my mom's work computer. My mom made some comments about Lara's chest being fucking huge, of course they went over my head. For hours I stared at pixelated boobs pondering what the fuck my mom meant. That game hooked me on playing vidya.

The last ones I remember were Demon's Souls and Mountain Blade

I'm not even into racing games.

Burnout 3 on PS2 is better, but I don't really have a choice at the moment. Great fun. Just wish I could turn off the god awful music.

MGS3
I've beaten it at least 8 times by now.

MM had me the complete opposite of hooked. I bought it when it was new years ago, got stuck without even turning back into a human and returned the game because I was a dumb shit. Then I bought it again on the Wii VC and enjoyed it enough to get to the water dungeon before running out of steam again. Bought the game a third time for 3DS, same thing. Finally I went back to the VC edition and powered through to the final boss, died like a bitch, didn't feel like doing all the sidequests just for the deity mask. Especially because I had the romance sidequest spoiled for me, killing my motivation to finish it. 10/10 game that I'll probably beat a year or two from now.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

...

Oh, and Dragon's Crown pulled me in too.

SSX on tour
i dont know why i just feel good playing it, like all is right in the world

Just playing the demo was enough to let me know the love is for love.

Got the demo way back on a CD that came with a gaming magazine. Played through it dozens of times.

In a way. I played several times until the Bar (or a bit further) but then quit. I kept going back and eventually I installed some mods that fixed the game and I was hooked.

Music related

STALKER shootan is a lot more methodical since you don't have the slo-mo advantage. You have to survey the area and use it to your advantage. Most of the game is set outside unlike FEAR's tight corridors. And because the atmosphere is so immersive you might just shit your pants and fear for your own life when something Zone-y happens. Both games are perfect in my book.

But the moon looks retarded now, yes?

I will never understand why people hate stuff just because it's new.

Played Super Metroid and Guradian Legend for the first time a few months ago, and both pretty much rekindled my dying love for video games. Since then, I've played through Zero Mission and Fusion, as well as revisited Super Metroid, and I'm planning to go back to Guardian Legend soon. I don't know what's more depressing, the fact that I probably won't find a game that drew me in as much as those two games, or that AM2R got shut down.

this through and through

godly art direction, brilliantly synergized skill trees spread over a dozen classes, perfect difficulty curve, gameplay centered around tinkering with skill/equipment builds with appropriately costly options for resetting mistakes, comfy music, unique engaging map-drawing mechanic

non-linear progression is perfect for a deckbuilding game, card pool of hundreds, easy enough to require zero grinding, large enough cardpool to make grinding boosters tons of fun anyway

these games are absolutely massive in potential playtime, you get the fun of playing an excellent action game while acquiring materials to improve your equipment for that feeling of RPG progression satisfaction, cute script and universe, great art direction

my favorite turn based game for Xbox though I never played many, good replayability, satisfying ally recruitment, can turn your allies into fucking Jedi, had so much fun playing through with dual blasters after reading up on some game mechanics and realizing they can be as great as lightsabers, better plot than the movies

aw yeah, any sports game with vivid art and a great soundtrack will be excellent
only SSX game I played was SSX3 but I loved it. THPS4, THUG2, and JSRF were also favorites of that era complete with killer soundtracks that influence my taste in music still

Am I autistic?

Ys VIII did/is doing this.

...

Throw out New Vegas and it's perfect.

Final Fantasy IV & VI & VII & Mystic Quest
Skyward Sword & A Link to the Past
Breath of Fire II & IV
Monster Rancher 2
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Phantasy Star IV
Shining Force I & II
Gran Turismo

If online games count:
Unreal Tournament
Ragnarok Online
Lineage 2
WoW up to beginning of Cata

...

AM2R is finished, and people downloaded it before it got taken down. Go look in a share thread sometime user. Also, it may not seem like it, and I know people are obnoxious about this game, but Dark Souls is right in line with Super Metroid and the rest of the Metroid series. Nonlinear, exploratory fun.

I still gotta give Guardian Legend a try.

...

Looking for a game to do this. I'll try Super Metroid. Never heard of the other one but I'll look it up. I remember getting lost for days as a kid in games like Dragon Quest but lately I've been bored all the time and playing games seems like work. I was pretty hooked on Mass Effect 1 and 2 when I played those. My first Pokemon games hooked me too. They had me playing non-stop.

Solatorobo kept me engaged until I completed all the quests.

Viewtiful Joe
i'd replay it if i hadn't sold my gamecube for a 360 that broke in 6 months ;_;

i don't really replay games much unless it's for something like 1cc attempts or different routes

That is a fucking tragedy. I'm sorry user. I actually cried a little when, after spending so long throughout the course of the game getting further and further in the quest only to be stopped by not having a necessary item, getting the side masks like Postman hat and Keaton mask as I went along, and finally ending the quest with the [ending] after racking my brain, it was so beautiful. Amazing.

Some posters are like that, yeah. 3DS moon is just a higher poly version of the N64 moon, same face and everything. Don't understand it.

...

...

Monster Hunter fucking killed all other vidya for me. I can't even play anything else for any length of time because I'd rather just keep playing Monster Hunter instead.

Hate that feel.
Mostly because I've only been hooked on Spiral Knights that way.

These motherfuckers, right here. They brought an entirely new level of comfy

Some aren't perfect, but they really, REALLY clicked with me. It's like, wow.

Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin really sunk their teeth into me. Order of Ecclesia, not so much. I couldn't put those two down, though. FEAR definitely fits, too. I replay it every so often, and I love it every single time.

Well, DSP, I never knew you had such taste. Sanic Leashless, really?

Oh, and both the Megaman ZX games. I've replayed them a few times, and they hold up well (the first moreso than the second).

Finally got around to playing spore.
It is painfully obvious how much content was cut I'm sure even people who didn't watch that presentation on the early version of it would have noticed.
It was still fun (though I only just got to the civilization phase) and I'm really enjoying it. One thing I really don't like though is that you have heaps of parts that give level x stat/ability but they don't stack. You could get your level 1 health hands, mouth, as many knee caps as you wanted to stud your body with, and still only get the +1 health but it would still charge you the 50 or whatever DNA points to put them on your creature. The same applied to speed too, so a bipedal creature would run just as fast as a quadruped so long as they had the same feet part. Completely wasted potential there.

Also you can't grapple enemies. I'd made a creature with really bulky grabbing arms and a strong biting mouth with gliding wings with the intention of using it like a hawk: swoop down on prey, grab and pin them, then shred them with the mouth. Didn't work at all because moving and fighting were separate in the hotbar mmo style combat they used for the pre-tribal age.

I've been told it only gets worse from here but by god are there any mods for this game? Please tell me there is a hidden mod forum out there that fixes all of this cut content and dumbing down.

These two games are the only ones I've really played recently on 3DS that even made use the system. Animal Crossing New Leaf I dropped quick, Pokemon X honestly bored me compared to White and Soul Silver, and I still haven't played a whole lot of SMT4 outside of getting my ass kicked at the minotaur fight

Almost forgot THESE ones.

The least I've played them individually is at least 9 times, I'm counting all the way from 2006. I've beaten cave story on hard mode in all of the ports, it felt GREAT.

Who's DSP? Also, I wasn't there after it first launched, so I don't know WHAT I expected, nor did I look at the ratings during my first playthough. From my take, I loved it, though, to be fair, the werehog stages fucking DRAGGED sometimes, but it wasn't all bad, other than maybe the Skyscraper and Citadel, it was quite the refreshing take. The soundtrack made everything so tolerable, even if I was in my 15th minute, the music just kept me GOING, It's my #1 Sonic Soundtrack of all time. The battle system needed work, but beating the everloving fucking shit out of everything was so god damn satisfying, It was a beat-em up done 3 quarters right. I admit, it didn't fit the Sonic franchise well, for obvious reasons I don't even have to mention, but SEGA were on the right tracks with the hedgehog engine, which thankfully led to generations.
.
I give it a 7.9/10
Missions were fucking boring and getting Sun/Moon medals were annoying, but the main game flowed very well.

Honestly, the last game which really hooked me hard was Infinite Space for the DS. It made me lose sleep, and I played it every free moment I had till I beat it - then I restarted and played through again to see the other paths.

The gameplay itself is not spectacular, but it's serviceable and decently varied between ship to ship combat which evolves a bit as you get better ships with more capabilities, crew to crew boarding skirmishes, first person dungeon crawls, and tetris-like ship customization with another layer of customization as you level up your crew and assign them to various management posts in your fleet. The art design is great, and the story/characters are absolutely fantastic - albeit the story does kind of fall apart at the end and it feels rushed.

That was back in 2010.

God that's sad.

The only other games to have hooked me as hard is Fallout New Vegas, and to a lesser degree Bethesda - but those are less games and more autismal walking/murder hobo simulators which honestly have more to do with having been hooked hard by Morrowind and that buying a lot of goodwill for that type of gameplay - even if the games themselves were falling short and continually being dumbed down. Plus, mods.

It took Fallout 4 all of 20 mins to break that.

From looking and what I have in my computer and remember some more:

wow dude this is ridiculous, do you have bugged lolcow mechanics?

I loved the fan translation of DR, the vita localized came out and everything turned to shit and I refused to play it, and the sequel, it looked too awful to bear, even with text.
Pure dogshit, it doesn't help that beacock ruined one of my all time favorite characters and him sound like a budget 4kids character. Fuck you NISA, and fuck you for making a shallow Cave Story port for the 3DS too.

At least the 'No Escape' Series is still good, right?

South Park: Stick of Truth. My first two days with it weren't anything special, but on the third day I just started playing and didn't stop until I'd beaten it. I also played a shit-ton of Cave Story during a weekend at a friend's cabin, but I haven't played it since I got to the endgame.

Not playing games for fuck knows how long after getting really into them for a while is a bad habit of mine that I just can't shake.

Fuck, my spelling, I need to sleep.

I like Johnny vore.

Imagine the most moronic person you've ever talked to on Holla Forums and now imagine they do Let's Plays

...

I guess you can say it was unBEARable?

...

Super Mario RPG came out when I was 14, and I got a free copy of the strategy guide with my subscription to Nintendo Power. I was an extremely poor child and read that guide cover to cover and I felt a want for that game that was actually honestly physical, like a hole in my stomach. I wanted it so bad

When I finally got it I stayed in my room for like two weeks and absolutely could not put it down. God I loved it

I've been playing Link's Awakening every few years since I was 4. The first time was the hardest because I wasn't as strong a reader at that age (who the hell knew what a pols voice was in the bottle grotto?)

Alpha Male Protocol.
I replayed it a little bit too much.
Over 10 times.

Gonna avoid him like a plague now. Thanks.

I can't even laugh at this fucking joke, they seriously destroyed the game.
It's like watching your daughter do porn. I don't even have a daughter.
It's like letting a sex offender babysit your sister, you know she's gonna get molested but don't know the severity of it.

Bloodborne is my favourite game of all time, the music, the atmosphere, the tight fucking mechanics and fast as shit combat, it's all perfect

Alan Wake

I smell autism. user, do you have autism?

I'm probably not the only one, but i really got hooked on Spore

Only on the civilization and space stages, the rest of the game can fuck itself

No, I just don't like mature and edgy games for edgy and mature gamers such as myself
I like cartoon colorful shit, what's wrong with that?

Also, I meant MORE, not VORE lmao. Just noticed my typo.
This is Johnny.

i played 999 non-stop after starting.
i got my 3ds a bit late and did miracle mask and azran legacy back to back.

i find some games i'm really hooked on at first but after 10-20 hours i get bored. stardew valley and story of seasons were both like that for me.

smt4 sort of picks up once you get into japan (which is shortly after than minotaur). it's no strange journey, but it's an ok game.

How's Layton?

It's not his time yet, Lucifer.

the 3ds ones aren't the best in the series, but i really enjoy all the layton games. i'm looking forward to lady layton too.

Any Smash.
The Wario Land series. I finally made myself stop replaying 4.
Kirby's Adventure, and most Kirby games beyond it.
Yoshi's Story. As a kid I kept replaying it and Kirby's Adventure to speedrun them. Didn't know speedrunning was/would be a thing.
The THPS series.
Monster Hunter, but only at Portable 3rd and beyond.
The Dark Souls series.
Awesomenauts.
Rayman Legends.
Zork: Grand Inquisitor.
Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse.
The Max Payne Series.
Red Faction: Guerilla.
Space Station Silicon Valley.
Banjo Kazzoie & Tooie.
Rock of Ages.
Vice City, San Andreas, and the PSP GTAs.
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, but only with my friend.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
The Deponia series.
Most Valve games besides DOTA and DoD.
Metro 2033 & Last Light. Went back to play 2033 as heroically as possible, and did it that way the first time in Last Light.
Ragnarok Online. I just tried it again today thanks to 8ch but the creepy deviantart-tier custom NPC art turned me right off.

VTMB
MGS Series
Mount & Blade
Suikoden Series
Kotor 1 & 2
TBC & Vanilla
Stalker: Chernobyl
Red Dead Redemption
Saints Row 2

Good taste.

I actually really liked Furi. It's been a while since I played a game where I could really see when I got gud. Also, that final boss, holy shit.
>wander around the world as it withers under my feet and embed related is playing
>go to a tower in the distance
>cutscene plays inside
>inside is a fucking mech suit
>go to space and fly into a fucking space station
>you're a mass-produced alien and you either destroy the planet or fight the mothership
>cue bullet hell
It's probably a lot easier than most danmaku but I still haven't gotten into that genre, so the fight kicked my ass at first until I figured out the little shit that gave me an advantage, as well as just timing my dodges to avoid attacks I couldn't before.
It's not worth $25 for most people, but it's worth it for me just because it's the only game that's come out this year where I dropped into 'the zone' while playing it. Nothing else this year's gotten me into the sort of trance/hyperfocus that I get into when I need to git gud.

Peace Walker HD's got me hooked on S rank kush

Jesus Christ, I didn't read the comments for that video.

Rune Factory 5 FUCKING NEVER FUCK

Even though the game isn't that great, I still was completely hooked to the space part for like two weeks. It's the part I enjoyed the most about that game

Posting an obvious one.

Currently stuck to Mount & Blade Warband. I played with the Rhodoks for a week in native, and really enjoyed it even though the AI is completely stupid , but right now I'm trying out mods, especially Prophesy of Pendor. I'm amazed by the modding capacity of the game. I've heard some stuff about a Star Wars mod too, should try that out. Deus Vult looks good as well. There's the DLCs too. God, I'm going to waste so much time into this game. Should I bother with the DLCs ? And do you know some other great mods ? I've got plenty of time to waste actually.

The good Star Wars mod is for Mount and Blade (not Warband), but you actually have M&B for free if you bought Warband.

Download the Mount and Blade demo, on the launcher you can enter a CD key to get the full game. Use the key you have for Warband and you're set.

As for DLC, Napoleonic Warfare kicks ass if you're into the multiplayer and I've heard conflicting things on Viking Conquest.

>One Finger Death Punch

Hello, fellow Squid.

I want to violate chiya

Die, blasphemer.

Get in line fucboi

Generals, and the Zero Hour expansion. Still fun as hell to play with mods, and incredibly easy to mod yourself.

Battleship for the GameBoy had has the most intense experiences of any Battleship game: every ship has a limited supply of special moves available while alive (AI has less limits), your submarine is only 1x1 grid size (and usually your last ship remaining), and you get to see the enemy AI's cursor move around your ships before it finalizes a shot. Go emulate that shit!

...

It's a really good game, and is really fun to play, but I wonder how you could have been "hooked" to it, there's just not enough content. Once you finish the story there's not much to do, apart from doing 100%.

although the first time playing it on the ps3, i dropped the game, but after revisiting on the PC with the resolution patch, it's really great despite the questionable dialogue

My friend's dad was reselling old pcs, sometimes they'd have a CD left inside. One of these CDs was half life 1. This gsme made me fell in love with fps.

Other amazing games worth pointing out
GTA
Max Payne
Rayman

honestly, prolly dat def jam fight 4 ny my nigga

shit was intense w/ ur fav hip hop stars battlin it out in some fierce ass fuckin situations and circumstances to get dat guap feel me

i rly identified w/ da campaign and core gameplay n think more devs should follow suit licensing rappers likenesses fo shit like dat.

I wanna see Def Jam v. Hanna Barbera fo'real.

...

I'm sorry

Splatoon and KOTOR 2.

I have been enjoying playing a lot of kingdom classic to the point i was not doing work I needed to do.

Also PSO for the Dreamcast took up a lot of my time before the servers were shutdown.

Shit taste in teams

Ive replayed Sonic Unleashed and Sonic colors
The OST still holds up

Played abit more Splatoon aiming for S+99

Pokken Tournament , Mario kart 8

Weeb game called GetAmped 2

Thats about it.

except for my games in my childhood period, I don't know any, man.

Master of orion 2 had me up all night, I played it for the first time yesterday and I'm loving it. I was supposed to meet up with someone early in the morning and I'm so god damn sleepy. I regret nothing. I just want to get back home and finish my game.

cant remember any game that did that past 2005, and before that my memory is too shit to remember the countless games i enjoyed when games were good

I'm kinda glad I didn't buy it on Steam, otherwise I would always be reminded of the possible hundreds of hours I've wasted on that game.
After you beat the game, you're free to wreck shit/clean the city, but I'm pretty sure the city resets after you quit the game because I was never able to 100% it. It's just fun going everywhere, fucking with the exaggerated physics and going
CHOO CHOO MOTHERFUCKER!
with a shield or armour on.

And it has what is probably the most satisfying attack in any superhero game.

I have Dominator on PSP as well, but I want to get through Legends first because I miss Takedown.

I am absolutely shit at that game and RTS in general (no pun intended). Each mission takes me roughly 2 hours to complete and I get obliterated by the AI constantly. I'd just finished the train mission and the next one is kicking my ass so hard I keep ragequitting.
I know it has all the information written down for my dumbass, Which units are fast, which are effective against which and weak against which as well. But I cannot for the life of me get my shit together and use my units effectively. I try to separate them into subgroups depending on unit type, speed or range, but it never helps.
Why can't I into more advanced genres like RTS, ,4X, SRPG or ever regular RPG?

But that's wrong. Most builds were bad or didn't scale and just like EO3, multiple attack builds were stupidly OP. And after the first area, FOEs no longer are a threat as the difficulty doesn't keep up. There's way too much variation in builds for them to ever be able to balance it tightly.

What games really hooked you the first time?
This is my favorite games of the last ten years
The best combat systems of any JRPG I've ever played and I loved the sense of adventure
I was spewing shit all over fancy houses within an hour
Dat singleplayer, dat multiplayer, dem characters, dem challenges

What games were good enough to hook you for multiple playthroughs?
I replay these every few years
Any time I get a new co-op partner
I leave it hooked up just in case I feel like playing Hulk vs Denton CAW all day erry day

deus ex human revolution, finished it in 1 run

Rayman 2 and Chrono Cross
Civilization 2

Underrail really got me because it had a pretty interesting world to explore, and some cool characters.

Worst taste in the history of mankind,

I love Sci Fi stuff, especially ones that are nerve raking like Aliens Franchise.

This game alone will make you piss your pants at night if you screw up, or an alert comes up making you think quickly to survive.

its on sale now through steam for 20% off

Other Games

It may not be an arcade port, but hot damn is it one of the best racers on Dreamcast. 4 player racing, Stunts, and did I mention CARS WITH WINGS

One of the best Action RPG/Dungeon Crawlers you can take 3 bros with to power up your character. Still to this day play it every blue moon

>F-Zero X 64DD Expansion Kit
Now yes, we all know GX is fucking incredible, but still this version brings me back in. Add in 2 more cups thanks to the 64DD, Track Creator, and holy fuck yes make your own Machine.. also that Rainbow Road Theme. If you have an Everdrive 64, get that shit on there ASAP. Its already Translated perfect.

I could keep going but no one really cares.

Star Fox 64 and 3DS
Pokémon Platinum
AM2R
The first Borderlands
Metal Slug (Especially 3)

Last thing I played was AM2R on hard more. I completed it once on normal and decided to go for hard mode because "why the hell not how hard could it be?" Turns out some enemies have different behaviors, but the major difference is that all enemies are tanks that deal massive damage.

Finished New Vegas. I chose to help Yes Man. The ending was sort of anti climatic. I mean, along the dam there were maybe 10 to 15 Centurions and Great Khans. I annihilated them quickly and without much effort. I slipped past the Brotherhood guards by passing a speech check, then activated the dam so I could send an electric shock to Caesar's fort in order to awaken the army of securitrons that lay dormant there. I had 100 speech, so I managed to get Lanius to retreat and to get the NCR to fuck off out of the dam without a fight. Easy peasy, I assumed there would be more to it than that. Lanius said he'd be back at a later time, so I thought that the final battle had merely been postponed. Game just sort of ended. luckily I have another save that starts just before I give the Platinum Chip to House, so maybe I can choose another ending or get around to doing the DLC
