This is most noticeable in FPS games. I can always tell exactly what I'm looking at in FPS from the 90s/early 00s, in modern titles there is so many filters and blurriness and fog I don't know what the fuck is going on. You would think that visibility would be a high priority in a competitive genre but not according to modern hack devs.

It bothers me very deeply that while technology and hardware has improved games generally have not and in most cases have even regressed in terms of gameplay depth.

There has for example been no increase in draw distance seen in games since the mid 00's despite huge improvements in GPU tech and proliferation of powerful midrange cards.

One of the most exciting things for me growing up when a new console released was seeing how much more complex the controller/controls and depth of gameplay was. The sixth generation consoles were the last ones to give me this feeling. The controllers for 8th gen are exactly the same as 7 and the graphical improvements are basically unnoticeable to me, it's nothing but disappointment.

I would however say that consoles have stagnated. What big difference is there between the PS3 and the PS4? It's nowhere near the jump from PS2 to PS3. The tech is disappointing, more than the games.

While that is true, but it wasn't seen as something acceptable and such instances were far and few between. Broken games got shit or faded into obscurity. No one was like, "well, it came from 'that dev', so what were you expecting?" or "it's only a beta! They'll fix it!".
These days no one bats an eye at early access or Bethesda games. That's the difference. Sure, games can be fixed these days, but is that really acceptable? You don't buy toaster that's advertised as new but is actually broken and then expect a mechanic to come fix it a few weeks/months later or have to fix it yourself. You send that shit back and demand a new one or a refund. You don't just expect toasters to be sold already broken and accept it as a fact of life.

That's because games were incredibly expensive, or you coulda' just had crazy parents like I did.
