What's the appeal?

What's the deal with these QTE ridden visual novels?
What's the appeals they have?
Why do people buy this shit instead of just youtubeing them?

I honestly don't get it
Sure Telltales makes interesting storyes but the "multyple outcomes dependeing on player choice" shit is little more than an illusion of control.
The progression of the story as well as the events that happen including the outcome of the ending are pretty much set in stone, only superficial shit changes depending on player input but nothing significant changes in the overall story

They brag about the many multiple paths a story can tell but in in the end all paths are braided together by the end, no choise you take changes the general outcome

I can kinda understand why people praise Telltales as their writting and art design are not shit, but what's the diference between "playing" this types of games and just youtubeing them
And don't bring me the "muh Player choice" bullshit cus i've seen playthoughs that allow the viewer to chose story phatsvia links in anotations, so i got pretty much the same experience as people who "played" it minus the QTEs wich i find as the most boring method of virtual interaction seriously, it's like playing Simon Says

But then we have shit like Life is Strange and Until Down wich are interactive storyes with all the topes that are universally despised in movie manking, or pretentious "to deep 4 U" Oscar bait crap made Jewlywood director wannabes like David Cage and people still praise this crap

As stories, they fail and they have nothing to offer as far as gameplay mechanics are concerned so why are they still commercially succesfull? seriously the QTEs and the superficial branching story paths are the only thing diferentiating them from walking simulators (and i find it Ironic that a walking simulator like Stanley Parable actually pulled the "multiple story paths" better than Telltales ever could)

What do people see in this genere?
What compells them to waste money on these visual novels when they can get the same experience from youtube?
Are QTEs really that fun for normalfags?
Have they been brainwashed by the hype machine?

The same can be said for pretty much anything else. Piracy is very easy, yet people still make money from other digital forms of media.

honestly the worst part of telltale games is the art for me

the art style with the character models is all the fucking same with very little variation unless there's direct source material to base off like the actors in GoT (which unsurprisingly clash with the TT art style!!!!!)

they're just shitty visual novels.

True, i can get any game i want for free
but lets pretend the world actually cares about lawfull behaviour regarding media
Piracy is a crime, so people may not want to pirate somethin so as to not breack the law
Watching playthoughs by youtube is not illegal and it is still a free method to get the same experience out of a Telltale's game wich offer story as their main draw

My question is not exacly why do normalfags buy shit, if we knew why maybe we could do something against EA, my question is:
What's the difference between youtubeing and "playing" these visual novels?

Vid related pretty much sums up my mind set regardign vydia, that's why i cannot understand why would someone pay to play this shit instead of just youtubeing, if the want to chalenge themselves to learn and master the mechanics of a game then Youtube won't help, but if they want a story, i don't see the point in buying this QTE ridden Skinner boxes

The story and characters.

To the developer, it's basically just an extremely cheap way to make a movie.

To the uninitiated player, it's like getting a movie and a videogame at the same time, but they're too shortminded to realize that they're really getting neither.

They used to take some skill because these point and click games, back in the FMV days, had puzzles or time sensitive things going on. Like Critical Path or the 7th Guest.

Now they are pretty much just click to go to the next page like those chinese anime porno games that Holla Forums loves so much.

But I wonder why these devs want to make straight forward interactive movies instead of traditional puzzle heavy point and click adventures. Part of the appeal of a movie is that it doesnt take more than 2 and a half hours usually and you dont feel bored by the end of it

Not yet.
Especially indies have been puishing for it and it's just a matter of time until the big ones follow suit in fear of losing their shekles over it, without understanding what it actually is.

There's also one important thing to remember: normalfags have no standards.

To them, QTEs are completely valid forms of player agency. Doesn't matter if there's no consequences (long-term or otherwise), if it's "press X to not die", or if it's like pic related. THEY. DON'T. CARE.

You're pressing buttons, and things are happening. That alone is enough to enthrall the average normalfag.

Point and click is nothing more than the user interface in Telltale games, there is no fucking way in hell i will ever recognize these shity visual novels as the same genere that clasic Lucas Arts adventure games or gems like Deponia

Maybe instead of being a bunch of pretentious assholes they should make a good game thats actually a game? Like even if I watch a playthrough and get the basic idea of a game I would still have fun to play it on my own.

Can I recommend them something like those bubble pop wrappings or any childrens toy ever made then?

Wow, like, are some kind of ableist shitlord? Making a game is like, too hard and people should like, give me their money instead for my art. I should know, I graduated the bottom of my class with my associates on liberal arts so I deserve more than like, entitled gamers like you.

Consumers:

Programmers:

No idea, they've started to resemble nothing more than children's pop-up books.

I still don't get what anyone sees in TWD. Season 1 was good, I'll give you that. The rest just went downhill fast and I still enjoy Sam and Max S1 more than TWD S1.
I'm pretty sure one of the games has QTEs that you don't even need to do, the game just does it if you wait long enough.

Appeals to autists

Only if there's an app for it.

I think they compliment well with adult coloring books and adult diapers.

I bought TWAU because I loved the first episode so much. Oops.

Wait, where did all these adult coloring books come from? Has it actually been proven to reduce stress or what?

...

if you're an overgrown sensitive child with no hobby then yeah

It's a fun, interactive story, and generally decently written. Why does it have to be more than that?

People go into these games expecting that every choice they make will result in a completely unique ending. There's only one story, you're just determining the flavor of how it plays out.

Generally, when people purchase a video game, they expect some sort of interactivity.

fucking adult coloring books fucking lazy piece of shit assholes just buy a sketchbook and draw yourself for fucks sake.

user, if they thought they could draw, they wouldn't be buying adult coloring books.

To some people, it is interactive enough.

it's only slightly more immersive than turning a page in a book, but that's enough to draw in certain people. Just a few hundred years ago, turning a page was the most interactive any medium could possibly be.

Even saying the word "Coloring Book" makes me shiver

And some people don't have legs. What does that have to do with normal people?

Well it gets a lot of inclined ramps built into the sides of hospitals, and that's always a fun alternative to the stairs.

If you want to waste your time.

Exactly. This whole argument is about how people choose to waste their time.

...

No, they should fuck right off, they just want to sit and be babied, but are too ashamed to admit it so they get "Adult sanctioned" coloring books like fuck off nobody cares if you want to buy a kids coloring book for yourself, and on top of that you could be doing something that at least would make people like you more if you just learned to draw and color your own damn stuff, like fuck man.

Says the man whining on the internet about people liking things he doesn't like.

retards that want to be "gamers" to fit in

the kind of people that buy computers to read visual novels or a playstation to watch interactive movies

It's not any of those things you fucking pleb. Get the fuck out of here and never come back.

The appeal used to be playing through a decently written, decently acted story with some minor changes compared to how your friends might play.
At least Telltale has gotten the "changes" part still around.

They're babbys' first point-and-click. Not easy enough to make you feel dumb, but juuust hard enough to make you feel special for making 'tough' choices. Give me classic point-and-click any time of the week over this poorly-written, illusion-of-control ridden bullshit.

You are missing the point, i did not ask, what it is, i asked, why should i play it instead of youtubeing it

The interactivity part is completly retarded, nothing but virtual Simon Says, and the branching story paths are an illusion, all paths lead top Rome, your choises do not matter, except for the most superficial and irrelebant shit

Doesn't matter s/he gets shoot in the end
Fuck you! Kenny does whatever he wants and you'll still have to pay the bill later regardless
Who cares! character still dies anyway

What is the point of playing something if the ending is the same regardless of how you play it?
Heavy Rain, Beyond 2 Souls, Until Down, all of those are shit, but at least your choises actually affected the endings

and even if chosing the diferent paths toward the same goal was part of the game's draw, Youtube can do that, everytime ther is a branch in the sotry you can just click in the anotation with the link to wichever story branch you chose

This is why i ask:
What do i get from playing this that i cannot get from youtube?

Telltale doesn't make games, they make interactive movies. They appeal to the casual crowd that doesn't base their merit in games in skill, in fact they don't give a shit about skill because it doesn't matter to them. They just want to play a movie that immerses them with pseudo choices, and a false sense of importance to the story. I like TWD games, not because it has amazing game play or anything like that (obviously), but because the game successfully made me care about Clementine. Telltale makes really shitty, shallow, games. But they make ok movies. Maybe my opinion is influenced by how much I like AMC's TWD, and the comics.

Imagine you posses no mechanical skill or the ability to strategize/numbercrunch. This is pretty much all you have left.

Money was stolen. It is theft.

Good goy

I have been wondering that myself. My best guess is that it gives people the illusion of being part of the cool kids without actually having to do anything. Kind of like if you bought a motorcycle and the gear so you could feel like a biker, but you would never actually ride the bike because that would require actual effort. It's buying gratification instead of earning it.

I don't see the appeal either. It's like Yahtzee said in his Heavy Rain video, (paraphrasing) it has too shit gameplay to be a good game, and it drags on forever and you have to hold the weird gamepad thingy to be a good movie. It doesn't satisfy anyone.

And yet I always hear "you have to play it to understand" when I say you can just watch it on YouTube. I think it translates to "I payed money for it, so it has to be better that way". But by the time the credits eventually roll you have not accomplished anything, the only reason you got to the end is because you did not shut the console off. The game basically hands you victory on a silver platter and tells you how great you are only because you payed for it. But it's meaningless, it's like being told by a prostitute that you're a great lover and that your dick is huge. Of course that's what she tells anyone because that's what she is payed for.

God forbid you admit to enjoying any video games on Holla Forums.

why do pirates and niggers have so many parallels?
