No Mans Sky :^)

I mean… you're not wrong…

...

...

Be specific. Huge DETAILED environments, or huge procedural environments?
The problem here is that too many recent and shitty games could be discussed, and nothing good will come of that because this thread will be derailed by fucking shills.

Quite frankly, there is no real point in huge enviroments if it doesn't have detail. Skyrim has a big(ish) map, but it still feels empty, and there isn't any worth in such a game.
The fallout series has always had smaller open world maps, but good comfy amounts of detail in them. (I'll exclude 4 and 3 from that list. They're not part of the fallout series for me.)
Red Faction Guerrilla had the most obvious empty map, you could go long stretches without seeing ANYTHING, to be fair, that was because of the Geomod engine, my point still stands.

...

Fucking sotc emulation how does it work.

I clicked this thread expecting that.
IT still bothers me, though.

Skyrim definately doesn't qualify. It's environments are tiny.

EYE Divine Cybermancy

...

Too fucking expected.

Recently played this for the first time, and I feel that some of the boss battles give the environments a better feeling of "hugeness" than what any screenshot is able to do, of course, playing the game helps as well.

thanks codenigger

Downgrade controversy aside, Witcher 3 had some huge environments with a lot of things to find and never feel like random generated bullshit. This made it actually fun to explore.

oh also the crew

I'm talking about large pretty maps with huge hills/mountains and architecture, in the vein of SotC.

NEVER EVER

62,394 square miles β€” roughly half the size of Great Britain β€” with over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons for the player's character to explore

...

...

should I be optimistic about wild hunt?
Holla Forums gave it a lot of shit on release, if I remember correctly

also I made this

sage for slightly off-topic

ayy lmao

Holla Forums gave it shit cuz it won GOTY and muh downgrade.

3 improves on a lot of things on 2, but at the same time they dumbed down a few aspects like alchemy. Wild hunt has the best soundtrack for atmosphere that I've seen in a long time. The expansions are as good in my opinion as Oblivion's, with Hearts of Stone being knights of the Nine and Blood and Wine being Shivering Isles.

Xenoblade bruh

Trips of truth.

Granted, outside of towns and dungeons, Daggerfall's world is mostly a bleak sandbox with occasional enemy encounters, but I love the game's atmosphere nonetheless. The time progression and music make the game quite immersive.

have an upvote fellow redditor

I feel OP wanted this answer, it fits too perfectly with whats happening right now.

The worst downgrade was the writing (story and characters) by far. Main villain had like 3 lines of dialogue, Radovid was dumbed down to comic villain status for the new wider console audience of slavshit project red.

I would recommend Fallout 4 to anybody looking for a great game with a huge environment.

I can give you more info after I get off from work.

Almost as much content as No Man's Sky!

It's not a popular opinion, but I like procedurally generated terrain. Anyone who has ever actualy walked more than a couple miles to the nearest mcdonalds, or even has gone hiking knows what a real landscape is like, and procedurally generated terrain is spot on as I see it. Yes, there is nothing interesting. For miles, and miles. Nothing. AND THAT'S FANTASTIC. You dont just hop off down a path for 30 seconds to get to the next "city". And cities in daggerfall really are cities. You can get lost in them. I would gladly sacrifice fancy graphics for more games like this.

Hey! I think you guys should listen to this guy, he sounds like he knows his stuff.

Really the best answer is Fallout 4 and he can tell you more about it after I give him a police escort home from his job.

It really is a shame, I liked the alchemy in the first one.
Did they dumb everything down just so 2 and 3 would be playable on console?

Are there any bullshit QTE's in 3?

I dunno guys, I believe Skyrim would be a better contender

did you fuckers get out of school late or something?

Take it from this anonymous poster that has no affiliation to these great guys, Bethesda is an all-around great company and all their games have good open world settings. Now I am at work, so I cannot keep typing, but I am sure other great people can agree with me.

...

Minecraft with RTG is fantastic, turn off the retarded villages, get some mods that allow for nomadic survivability like "sleeping bag mod" "adventurer backpack" etc, and you're ready to explore some great environments.
Needs a beefy rig to render the far away terrain though.

gee, sorry OP, we will definitely try harder next time

golly, I can't believe we almost started shitting OP's thread guise!

better apologize to OP!

combat was never the focus of the witcher games, you fucking mongoloid

Are there ways to convert microsoftcraft into a proper open world RPG? Something to add dungeons, quests, and character building?

I mean if you were looking for open world that's one thing, but the Ratchet and Clank games gave a great sense of galactic proportion.

Personally, what I take issue with in environments is often their scale. I can't even play V:tMB or DE:HR because in the cities, the streets are only wide enough for one car and it's stupid and distractingly claustrophobic.
Landscapes can be procedurally generated, heck they probably should be, but man made things should be held to a higher standard.

No QTEs, the most noticeable thing is the alchemy in Wild Hunt. You make a potion once, and every time you meditate it consumes strong alcohol and ONLY strong alcohol to replenish it. Geralt is able to meditate anywhere outside of combat And if you play on normalfag mode or below, this heals him to full HP.

And this is still miles better than combat in the original witcher. This strategy of waiting for the enemy to run out of stamina and then stun locking them ceases to work very shortly after early game.

Are you going to give me a muh story argument on fucking Holla Forums.

Video Games.
Game.
Gameplay.

The only thing that truly matters.

You must be some expert retard. Tell us more. Also:
unreal. fucking unreal. a shill AND a moron.

Just play Terrarria. (or starbound with mods because vanilla sucks ass)

dragon quest builders

I'm sorry, did you play said video game?
or did you get your opinions from Holla Forums?

OP, you complained that there were only 2 real answers to your thread, when there were clearly more than that.
Maybe I should be more clear the next time I want to point out that you are being a whiny bitch.

Also, one-sentence threads are halfchan-tier.
Sorry for asking about a game I'm fucking interested in.

well is it at least moddable?

Only and>>10365565. Xenoblade counts but Wii U is for faggots. Bethesda vidya and witcher have generic environments. You clearly didn't read the thread.
Nah, fuck off. I can make a topic as short as I please, faggot. The topic can be as short as it wants, it changes nothing. Maybe bait threads with tons of red text and links to SJW twitter accounts are more your style?
If it's not on topic, then fuck off.

Great argumentative skills straight from reddit.

And yes, I did play. I pirated the gog version. It was running like trash, it played like trash and it was just that - fucking trash. Why are you defending this shit? It is a known fact almost no one relevant from the original team is even left. We know how hard they wanted to put it on consoles. They run in into the fucking ground trying to make fantasy Far Cry, except Far Cry 3's camp system was still more enjoyable this and the story while tin was more entertaining than this "We have so many endings, we promise!" garbage. The AI is atrocious, the controls are a casual console mess and any single mechanic is dumbed down.

Why are you still defending this? Are you this fucking braindead? Do you even play video games or you can only compare it to other modern trash?

Should have added the downgrade, just so we don't forget it! And something people really don't talk about it - they kept their word, even though they pretend to go back on it, and optimized the game to run on 30 fps, which is also one of the main reasons it runs like trash when you try to unlock the fps on everything that was not gtx970 or newer. And of course, AMD just getting it up the ass.

I already tried it, doesn't work very well.
Adding dungeons was cool at first but then the world felt too crammed with dungeons and some were carbon copy of others, even with some elements randomized. Soon you're just jumping from dungeon to dungeon hoarding useless loot.
I don't know any standalone mods that add quests or character building(at least not super broken character building) But there are some big mods like AoA that adds a whole bunch of new dimensions and some passive skills that you can enchance on your character. Its fun at first too, your abjective is to get stuff to access new content from the mod, reminiscent of how you advance in terraria but jumping to whole new worlds instead of adding new biomes to the world. Gets old fast and isn't very balanced.
The base combat of the game sucks.
In my opinion the best adventurey way to play it to get a magic mod(thaumcraft or ars magica), a good mod that adds monsters(Grimoire of gaia is top tier, but requires some tweaking for balance and correct implementation) and RTG with disabled villages, the rest is optimizing mods such as optifine, shaders, dynamic lights etc. and mods to facilitate exploration such as sleeping bag, vanilla teleporter and lootable bodies.
It's probably not what you're looking for, but if properly configured it's pretty comfy walking around, gathering, killing monsters game and discovering spells game.(Grimoire of Gaia can get pretty brutal if not properly configured, I suggest playing on hard for the proper monster capabilities like status effects, but change their stats to half HP and half damage + no bonus and dividing each monster's spawnrate by 4 or 5)

Me too. It's a shame no one makes games like Daggerfall anymore.

And how does TW3 not fit this description?
Is it really that empty?

And by all means, make more shitty threads, but they are just going to be shitposted in.
Maybe try to rub those two brain cells you got together, and try to think about what you want in a thread before posting next time.

I am asking someone who has played the game if I should be optimistic.
From what he has said, there is not much to look forward to, as they dumbed down alchemy to such an extent.

The only way in which I "defended" TW3 is by saying that combat was never the focus of the series.
Have you even seen the Witcher combat?
That shit is garbage.

Calm the fuck down, you disgusting sperg. I bet you only play "Holla Forums-approved" games too

You really think daggerfall has that sense of vastness with large architecture? Really son? When the villages are like 2 stories high?
You seriously seem to be hung up on W3. Again, W3 has a generic game world barring castle you start in. Yes, it really is that empty. You have a seriously small idea when I say "fucking huge environments."
making a thread about large game environments is now shitty? I sure hope you're in 95% of the threads on here shitposting and complaining that the thread is shit. I sure hope you're not just making shit up right now and that you have a high standard as to what a thread should be about, homie.
Except I did, and you didn't read. And you didn't read the fact that I specified further what the thread is about only a few posts down.

Fuck off, W3 shill. It's clear you're actually fucking retarded. Oh and by the way fam, flags are for faggots. Cuckchan shit.

Since you're such an oldfag by bringing up the Holla Forums culture, surely you know how a lot of praised vidya here on Holla Forums generally have a great story to boot. Give me any 'official' lists of Holla Forums recommended and I can point out to you how most of them have a good if not great plot. NieR is a great example of this, its gameplay is average at best and tedious at worst, yet because of its plot and OST, it's still being mentioned in good spirits to this day.

And even if that wasn't the case, RPGs like The Witcher tend to have a focus on writing, since you know, it was never really marketed as look at how great our gameplay is holy shit DMC step away. Faulting the gameplay when it's not even the game's top priority is pretty cheap, especially considering its genre.

Now I'm not saying that writing is an objectively better quality in vidya than gameplay like I'm sure you're already thinking to imply, walking simulators will forever be non-vidya, but if a game's going for the writing and the gameplay is there and it works, there should be no problem that the gameplay is not 10/10 gotyay.

Except the gameplay is completely garbage and still takes up half of your gametime. It is absolutely the focus when it's a third person action game and half the damn game is spent fighting. Fuck off with your retarded bullshit.
but the story came fucking second. DooM and Super Mario are pretty much the greatest games of all time and have almost no story. Gameplay always comes first, unless you're playing a text adventure or some shit. Is witcher 3 set up as a walking sim or text adventure? If not, then it needs to have actual combat that's actually decent.

The fact that every quest in Wild Hunt is fully voiced, I'd say story came first there fam-a-lama dingdong.

and you clearly didn't read that I haven't played the game either OP

You had a good start there OP, just please listen to me and think before you post.
Since flags apparently trigger you, I went ahead and removed mine. I mean they do trigger you right? You weren't just grasping at straws there?

I wouldn't call you out on your shit if there was no shit to begin with faggot.

Just fucking kill yourself, you postmodern human scum.

Then make a fucking movie instead, you retarded shits.

can I ask how far you got into the game?
I need as many opinions as I can get.

Too bad the game is shit.

must. not. respond.

you're….you're defending a game you haven't played….so you are an actual shill?
Irrelevant, I clarified. That was the argument. Don't change goalposts now.
I was making fun of the fact that you think short topics are somehow cuckchan-tier. I guess you don't understand satire here?

I'll be honest right now, you are seriously the first person on this site that I've run into that actually goes out of his way to change goalposts this hard. You're not even trying to stay on topic anymore, it's incredible.

pirate it and fuck off already

I was well beyond the starting zone, you bating faggot. Pirate it and get your own opinion if you want one that much, you autistic fuck.

My money is that he never beat the dragon in Vizima.

I guess Star Wars games are all about the cinematic experience then.

Masterful logic.

This part is what confuses me. I played a lot of shit games in my time, and calling TW3's combat completely garbage seems a bit of a stretch. I'm not saying the gameplay is great, just that it works, why is that so hard to understand.

I never said gameplay doesn't matter, just that booting up Witcher 3 expecting complexity in its gameplay when you spend half the game talking to people is just irrational.

Kill yourself. You clearly don't actually care about games. Your ebin story has nothing to do with how The Witcher ranks as something you play. Go read the books if you care so much about the story, you fucking nigger.

If it's a GAME, then it needs to be a GAME first, regardless of where the fucking idea came from you complete mong. Are you telling me movies based off of books should just be a slideshow of the script? Fuck off with your backwards logic. If devs want to be autistic about the lore and can't put it with good GAMEPLAY then MAYBE it shouldn't be turned into a
fucking game series

The problem is that with all these games getting massive budgets, there should be no reason as to why the game shouldn't have better combat. The classics have written the bible on what has worked and what doesn't. I've seen indie teams of a handful of dudes make beautiful games with at least OK combat in current year. If a huge ass indie studio can't even make a game on par with the most barebones of swordfighting games, then it's garbage. W3 gives you the OP spell to deflect any attack when you begin the game, and almost all enemies die following the same "hit twice/block" combo. It's ridiculous.

Welcome to Holla Forums, the world's hottest opinion store.

At least now I know Wild Hunt triggers people enough to derail a thread as easily as undertale.

But user, you can only block monsters on Baby Bitch mode, else 90% of the monsters instantly break your guard stunning you.

Lord of the Rings Online

Now that I can understand, cheers for explaining yourself instead of being a faggot like that other guy.

fixed for autism

It works with any game, as long as you find the sweet spot between absolute bait and redditor logic, you can mine this place for salt for an eternity.

I played the game on the hardest difficulty and managed to beat past the griffin while focusing on a skype call and dying a handful of times in the ten hours of gameplay I had. It's not a difficult game in the slightest and every monster can be killed in the same fashion assuming you know how to switch to the witcher weapon or whatever the fuck it was called.

To be fair, if you're on here for even a day you should already know that
is the reason why we all call the majority of these games bad.

so you didn't beat it? ayy lmao

have you read any of my posts, or are you really this triggered?
do you need a safe space user?
10/10 thread OP

He says here he only just beat it.

...

alright know you made the bait obvious, I get it already.

I didn't beat it but I played more than necessary to give a decent idea of how bad it is. Also, isn't me.

It seems big because it was handcrafted and not 18QUINTILLIONIZED

I've been on halfchan's Holla Forums since '09 and here since '14 and I was never aware of this unspoken rule, I just tried the games out myself, and since I always pirate everything it didn't cost me nothing but time to have an informed opinion.

I finished The Witcher 3 twice because I liked it so much

...

also no EZ-fast travel, could have used some more stuff in-between though and change up spawns

still it actually provided a sense of danger and adventure

shit was fucking magic, yo

How, motherfucker, how? I'm bored fuckless in Velen and trying to force myself not to uninstall the bastard purely out of the respect for W1

It's fine if you like it. There aren't constant Pokemon and Overwatch threads up because the games are objectively great. It's important to have guilty pleasures. I'm a pretentious faggot when it comes to movies and TV but even I'll kick back and watch Freddy Got Fingered or watch some generic anime garbage at the end of the day. Ain't nothing wrong with having fun, the problem is people defending low standards and thinking the fact that they enjoyed something means it's objectively great simply because they enjoyed it.

The bullshit fast travel in that game is why I can't work up the balls to pick it up past my 10 hours of gameplay.

Magick Archer best class

i don't mind it, especially once you place a few strategic stones at certain corners of the map

ACTUALLY

muhdickisbestclass

It'd be fine if I could get a horse or something and it wasn't such a pain in the ass to go through the mountains and shit. SotC was perfect when it came to non-fast travel.

The main plot is garbage, but it's all the other stuff that easily kept me going. I loved the Bloody Baron from the first moment I saw him, and his chain quest has quite the memorable events. Not to mention the conclusion to that area is what I think is the best representation of witches I've ever seen in fiction.

I'm the guy in the early threads that loved the quest of the old woman who sends you to get her pot though, so I dunno if I'm the best guy to trust with that question.

bruh wuz dat explosion game? fallout 4? that shit lit bruh πŸ’¦πŸ˜‚ it got it all dat πŸ’¦ wet wet πŸ’¦ n the guns are tite and shit πŸ‘Œ peace out suckas ✌

πŸ’¦ πŸ’¦πŸ’¦πŸ’¦
πŸ’¦ πŸ’¦
πŸ’¦πŸ’¦πŸ˜‚πŸ’¦πŸ’¦
πŸ’¦ πŸ’¦
πŸ’¦πŸ’¦πŸ’¦ πŸ’¦

what game is that?

I finally ponied up some shekels for a new rig and figured I might as well try it. But holy shit, 90% of it is just the exact same bandits and mobs shit on the world map.

We're talking sub Bethesda-tier here. especially since the polish fuckers seem to enjoy neutering game mechanics with each iteration

So you were talking about the gameplay not mattering, because the game was focused on something different than what makes it a game, but now you said the main plot is garbage. Bravo.

...

Yeah, but the original is nice. You can't just walk around randomly killing everything, because there's gigantic ass monsters around that'll crush you with their enormous cock.

Going back and JUSTing them feels great, too.

dot hack

I can't disagree with you there. There's more enemy variety later on but it's still barely anything really. The only real variety is from the witcher contracts but they're few and far inbetween, so I can't really use it as an argument. Like I said, TW3 is not a game you'd want to play for the gameplay, so if the writing can't be enough of a justification to carry on, then I'd say it's best to just skip it and get hype for Mankind Divided in 10 days maybe?

I said the writing took focus, not the main plot specifically. The main plot is "find Ciri" for the first hundred hours, and "counterattack intergalactic space elves" for the rest. Not exactly enticing material, but, as an example, to find Ciri you do have to go through the Bloody Baron, Dandelion and the Craite family, all of which are great stories and sub-stories, and they're the meat of those hundred hours, not the looming "you have to find Ciri!" in your quest log that you just ignore.

You are a weeb into visual novels, aren't you?

No Man's Buy

:^)

Hows the story in Xenoblade? I cant stand X because its like im not even the main character

What no, what gave you that idea?

I loved Human Revolution and MD looks like a straight-up improvement in all departments, what's there not to be hype for.

Tamriel Rebuilt. Considering the base game is really old, things like these are pretty nice to see, even if the area is absolutely desolate when it comes to quests, dungeons and NPCs. Here's a video displaying the zones in the screenshots with full detail.
youtube.com/watch?v=j_1VWwlAJw8

You really are into modern garbage.

I don't hype, and I rarely play a game within the first 3 months. Oh well, at least I still have to burn the excellent writing and gameplay of Fallout 4:^)

I have pretty low standards for stories usually, but I liked it.. Character generally have clear motivations, though, and excepting a fucking mary sue you can kick to the curb, they're all fairly likable.

who here did that? I only said that combat was never the focus of the witcher games, and that opinion is based solely on my playthrough of the first one, and what I have played of the second. Then you threw a hissy fit because people were shitposting which in my opinion is completely justified

However, you clearly have some good taste. SotC is one of, if not my favorite game(s).

So how would Wind Waker fit in to your description?
The main problem I see with that is most of the environment being ocean.

I love Wind Waker. It is objectively a great game and whoever says it's not is delusional. :^)

...

Almost forgot

dude I love The Crew you can drive around like VRRROOOOOOOOOOOOM VROOM VROOM SKRRRRR BEEP BEEP HONK BEEEEEEEEEEEP GET OUT OF THE DUMMY WEEWOO WEEWOO WEEWOO OH CRAP IT'S THE COPS VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM ERRR

...

Fuck it, this thread is unsalvageable at this point
gg OP

alright I get it, you don't like the witcher, and I am okay with that.

I preordered. Heheh. Had to use a gamestop card for something, and I did enjoy HR. I'm gonna go in with low expectations. If it ends up being shit, it's not like that money could've gone to anything better

much better, thank you user

we appreciate you coming in here to shit up the discussion that came about, still getting some good talk so im guessing you still lost user

WEW LAD

what is there not to understand? what should i do with that card, exactly?

When I played Dark Souls 1 the first time the map seemed so familiar to Metroid Prime. Right before I finished the game I realized the familiarity stems from the maps being so large yet so interconnected with shortcuts you find after exploring far enough.

Fucking reddit memes how do they work.

weebs are cancer

I too was disappointed by how barren and empty the forbidden lands were. You'd think there'd be a city or two out there, in the forbidden lands.

SOTC is one overrated game, but it's anything but empty.

What said, the art direction for the game is for incoming buzzwords minimalistic/atmospheric environments. There's not many games that manages to pull off simple yet aesthetically pretty environments that drive home it's down like the game does. It's hard to put into words.

Also, it's a hub world that links together well-designed smaller levels. It'd be ok to shit on it if it were some type of city, but ultimately its just rolling hills that set the mood for you to get comfy.

hey, don't forget about its 2D Demake, Starbound!

I don't like sandboxes, but I didn't hate SOC, because the map served a clear purpose; you need find the next hidden boss. The finding task was not very hard, but all other the aspects of the game are too easy too. I hate big empty sandboxes I need to investigate.

why the fuck hasn't that kike disabled emoticons

That's cancer emoji.

You can't disable them

Its not serverside you stupid fuck, its client side, you need to disable it in your browser somehow

what artist, I recognize those lips but I can't remember his name

Same tbh.

The gameplay is shit regardless of what you want to fucking spout you contrarian retard.

If you want to turn the difficulty to the lowest and enjoy the story, go the fuck ahead.

...

Starglider 2, an open 3D space simulator from 1988 where you travel through a planetary system, explore the surface of planets and tunnels. The graphics were very basic but it was huge for the time.

Also the music was fucking great.

...

Why is everyone shitting on no mans sky when Shadow of the colossus is also a giant space filled with nothing? Fighting a colossus is barely a fight but more a puzzle for a few of them and putting down a dying dog for the rest of em.

Honestly, I love procedural generation, it's just they did it in the absolute shittiest way possible and then hyped it up like it was actually something revolutionary.

When done correctly, procedural generation can add a lot to a game. I'll give a compare and contrast against one of my favorite games that does it right, which is Speklunky (I haven't played the new one, just the original)

Does the procedural generation effect the gameplay in a meaningful way? Spelunky: Yes, NMS: No.

Does the procedural generation make the game more replayable and add variety to how the game is played each time? Spelunky: Yes, NMS: No.

Does the procedural generation give rise to emergent gameplay? Spelunky: Yes, NMS: No.

Here's the thing, is that procedural generation is best used when creating content. But there is no content in there, instead they used all of their procedural generation on "random art", which lends itself more to being a fancy walking simulator rather than a game.

It wouldn't be so bad though, if they hadn't made it sound like it was the second coming of Christ and then charged $60 for it.

On one hand, I didn't buy it so I can't be that pissed, but on the other hand, I like procedurally generated content when its done right, but now everyone will associate it with hype and shit because of NMS. So now companies I'm sure will be more hesitant to release stuff that has a procedural basis, which pisses me off.

Neither comes anywhere close to Smash Bros.' stage sizes.
