I'm writing a script for a video game at this very moment. Where the player is going and what they will be accomplishing at those places.

Spit the worst tropes that you never want to see in vidya so I don't accidentally commit a sin

Make a character that's aware that he exists inside of a video game.
Also make a timed escort mission on an ice level.

There's a perfectly good adgd thread in the catalog, you'd probably get some pretty good advice there.

CAN YOU STOP FUCKING READING MY GODDAMN MIND
I'VE BEEN READING TIC NEESAN THESE LAST 3 DAYS
THERE'S NO FUCKING WAY ANY OF YOU COULD'VE KNOWN THIS
I UNDERSTAND IT'S NOT AN OBSCURE MANGA BUT WHAT THE FUCK, THERE WAS LITERALLY NO REASON FOR ANYONE HERE TO POST IT, RIGHT NOW, AS I'M READING THIS, IN ALL MY TIME HERE NOT A SINGLE IMAGE FROM THIS MANGA WAS POSTED SO FAR
AND NOW THIS SHIT

GET OUT OF MY MIND YOU FUCKS
I KNOW YOU'RE WATCHING ME

Are you sure you're not just falling to meme magic by reading it in the first place

no escape

It's entirely possible that over two hundred thousand people share your birthday.

YOU TOO?
PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FUCKING WITH ME BY POSTING A LARGE AMOUNT OF LOTGH REACTION IMAGES RIGHT WHEN I STARTED WATCHING IT AND NOW I SEE AROUND 2 PER DAY VERSUS WHEN THEY WERE ONCE EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS. IT ONLY GETS WORSE FROM HERE.

THE JEWS WORK IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS TO CONFUSE THEY GOYIM. BE VIGILANT.

MC being forced to go on whatever adventure when he really just wants to stay home and watch anime.

either don't make "bigger than you" story or make saving the world merely a byproduct of MC's shenanigans

archiveofourown.org/works/6835171/chapters/15601768

Here, I've got a whole sextology for you.

Sounds shit. Did they even design the game first?

...

how about don't have a script

or at least mimic the writing style of EDF

1.) SJW shit. Anyone who frequents Holla Forums should know this by now, but I suppose it's worth repeating. Don't even do it "ironically."

2.) Needless references. Like holy shit, I was playing an Hentai RPGMaker game set in a generic fantasy, and then suddenly the characters go out and watch a play of Psychonauts and fellating its story or something. It's plastic as fuck, and completely takes away the reader's immersion.

3.) Breaking the fourth wall. Again, plastic - meaning it's completely unnatural most of the time. Don't rely on fourth-wall breaking unless you're going for a total comedy, and even then, your comedic style should have more tricks than just that.

Don't ever show a female as weak, needing help or attractive. They should all be orcish brutes.

How do you feel about Psycho Mantis and other moments of breaking the 4th wall in MGS? Is that a way it was done well, or was that unnatural?

Not him, but i'd suggest OP to not do it at all, because he probably won't successfully emulate it to the same effect.

Any degree of "Lol look at us we're so meta and edgy guys XD" is annoying as fuck, imo. Whether its the occasional fourth wall breaking or full on meta-autism like in Undertale "The protagonist's special power is the save/load feature get it thats why you're so powerful in vidyagaems cause you can keep trying until you win get it? XDXD" It just pulls you out of whatever immersion you may have previously had instantly.

No.

We already got 2 fucking threads where you could have asked instead.

Like what says, that's probably a testament to Kojima's competence as a writer and OP might not be as capable in execution. I would add, though, that much of the meta-commentary discussed in MGS are actually found in Postmodern theory, if I'm remembering things right. So unless you've studied the subject matter in-depth, I would advise against trying to enter that discussion (as with any subject a person is ignorant of).

However, you did bring up something I forgot. Besides comedy, another proper use for fourth-wall breaking would be in horror as another means of spooking the player. As with comedy, however, it really shouldn't be a writer's only schtick, and that mastery of other story-telling techniques should take priority before even considering the usage of fourth-wall breaking.

I downloaded Legend of the Galactic Heroes like 4-5 years ago and watched it on impulse only for it to start getting posted everywhere after I got to episode 8.

It's fucking scary man.

Some of the usual but…

Good luck user I'm also making a script for my game right now

if the MC is an italian male in his 30s with a beard and brown hair just don't

I agree, don't break the 4th wall or use references. Maybe once in just a secret dialog wall or something, but don't add that into the entire fucking game.

> tfw just got to the part where Yang Wenli dies
It's a good pain.

dont you think you should design the plot(though with a little leeway for gameplay/game design) THEN do game design?

To OP:
basically everything posted ITT plus whatever tropes you find with a quick search for trope lists
That said, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to art besides "make it good." If breaking a rule improves the game then do it. Out of curiosity, do you have full creative control over this, or are you just doing the writing?

don't make the story linear unless its good with a linear story

and i mean good

>Yang never lived together happily with his waifu
>Yang never died of old age while watching the grass
>Yang will never die in battle like a true hero
What happened with both of them kills me inside.

Don't have your protagonist be an indecisive, inactive, little bitch like most anime/manga/jrpg protagonist tend to be like pic related. Nothing is more annoying then an indecisive faggot.

You and the main character must be on the same page.
-If there is a guy in the background doing a mechanical laugh, he needs to address that instead of accepting "Oh it's nothing".
-If there is a guy in power who sends you to do a mission that is kind of evil, the main character should question that in some form or fashion.
-If a guy in the party is going to betray me, It shouldn't be the guy who is always angry and disagreeing with the group or the friendly but limp pussy who just needs power.
-No love triangles. Confront the bitch.
-If I have a childhood friend or a girl I like in the party, let me fuck them on the spot. I shouldn't have to wait until the end or an implied son in the sequel.
-No holding off of terminology like "It can't be.. ","Is he the legend of ..","Your just like your father …. I don't wanna talk about it".
-When I get to the bad guy don't make me hesitate to kill him, I had to cut down thousands of his goons already
-When I'm part of a resistance party, I better not be the only one doing shit and everyone else better not be jobbers.
-If I am trying to convince a person not to betray me or kill themselves, actually let me have a chance to save them instead of fake dialogue choices
-If there is a character who had lost a loved one or went through a traumatic event. Don't just have the main character say "learn to let go/move on/you have friends now" and be magically healed. Give the Motherfucker time to learn through it or have some kind of tick with him.

I think that's pretty much it to make a solid RPG

Personalize the drama with the protagonist. Regardless of the scale of the challenge/adventure/etc, giving the protagonist a personal stake in it instantly makes the motivation more compelling and easy to get invested into.

I've noticed that whenever I learn a new word or phrase for the first time, over the next few months I will hear that word/phrase constantly on radio or youtube, in movies of just regular conversation.
Is this an image board version of that phenomenon? Like, our brains becoming more receptive to information after we learn it's proper context?

You're just becoming more conscious of the word with it being in recent memory. Your mind typically glazes over words you don't understand.

As best as I can tell, yes. I experience that in real life as well, and it seems to stem from a combination of other factors, as well. Certain topics seem to come up with high frequency within a small span of time and then disappear, as though the same topics are on every member of a group's mind, whether they're important or relatively meaningless. Similarly, words are demonstrably used in fashion, and the more one person uses a word, the more other people around him will begin to use it. Just look at those Google graphs of word usage over time.

It's as though we become so saturated in one topic within the collective subconscious, that we suddenly become aware of it, and can concisely track the meme as it passes.

all the manga I read haven't been translated from japanese so no one is bringing out that shit anytime soon.

Also after Life is Strange I've heard a lot more people use "hella" and "awesome sauce".
Also when people on chans started using fam I started hearing all of my friends and people in my circle using fam as well. I'm thinking it's not quite but a lot more people use chans more then they let on.

I came to this thread to tell you that i thought i was the only one who had this feeling.

I hate these 2. Especially that last one, seriously fucking hate that. It's been done to death by so many jrpgs.

Fucking this man. If you want a great example of how to make a shitty, boring, unbelievable main character that your playerbase will hate, just look at Shinji from Evangelion: the show would have been much better had that pussy died early and they just killed the show off.

Its true.
Proof: Mark

sounds right

>Happy endings

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases#Frequency_illusion

Seems about right. We do know that words come and go in that fashion, though.

a happy ending
muh chosen hero

Don't make a self insert protagonist. Never make a self insert protagonist. Make that fucker interesting.

After reading a lot of really mediocre stuff, I can only say this:

CHARACTERIZE EVERYONE PROPERLY. FUCKING EVERYONE, EVEN GENERIC MOOKS

AFTER MAKING A DRAFT OF THE PLOT OR WHATEVER BULLSHIT PLAN YOU'RE DOING, WORK ON YOUR DESCRIPTIONS, ASSUMING YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WRITING HERE. DO IT, EVERYONE IN THE VIDYA GAME INDUSTRY CAN'T WRITE FOR SHIT AND THEY HAVE TO RESORT TO OTHER SHIT TO MAKE THE STORY INTERESTING, SO GIT GUD AT IT

IF YOU'LL MAKE YOUR PLOT TWISTS TOO OBVIOUS I WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE AND SHIT IN YOUR CLOSET

This is the best advice in this thread. What separates meh RPGs from good RPGs is the protagonist -> have them have their own motivations and goals. generally try to align them with the player as well. if you need inspiration, go play some of the classic JRPGs like Grandia II. notice how ryudo is actually a character and isn't a little bitch boy like emiya? your protagonist doesn't have to be "cheeki breeki kill all everythings" but they have to have some sort of confidence and motivation they work for.
if you have a great protagonist and a characterized cast, the other stuff will start to fall in and become much easier. even if your plot is the greatest plot of all time, if you can't get the hero right, it might as well be five nights at freddy's

way to go user

so why is there like no porn of plastic nisan

You mean like "Cuck"?

So I've noticed that some good RPGs deal around having imperialist forces take over a small nation and then the factions are based on either supporting or denying them, for example Morrowind.

I had an idea for a game set in a multiple island setting, medieval fantasy of course, I was trying to think of interesting ways to handle such a setting. For example I had thought that there could be a group that sympathizes with the Imperial invaders whole holding a liberal viewpoint, another that sympathizes but with a fascist viewpoint (all are welcome vs order and economy) and a third faction of natives that completely oppose it.

Ignore all the other posts and just listen:

Remember that in Paper Mario, Mario doesn't say a single word. That's because you are supposed to define his personality through his actions, not have it spoonfed to you through text.

So write what you want, but remember that as a storyteller, if you can make their motivations clear without any dialogue, you've done your job.

Besides, I doubt there's something profound in an RPG that the player absolutely must know if it's unrelated to the gameplay. Less is more.

Do literally anything else. This is so overdone and I'm tired of everyone ripping off Tolkien.

Make it like Zephyr and that beach level in Spyro 2, each faction fights the other and you're a triple-agent taking advantage of the conflict.

Incorrect, all actions taken are necessary to continue and you are given no meaningful choices throughout. Mario has no personality in any of his games. Nintendo is too scared to give their mascot a defining characteristic like that.
He has a mouthpiece ala Navi for all three games.

No stop
Do something more interesting and less touched on

Can I just offer some general advice?

If you aren't an excellent writer, someone who knows the ins and outs of the craft, someone who can make characters people instantly fall in love with, etc.

Then don't fucking bog the game down with your writing. Get it in, provide motivation, then get it the fuck out of the way.

Actually I was leaning towards Indonesian spice isles with an emphasis on masks and identity. Lizardman would be present basically as abbos while natives would be more socialable but oppressed

He's not reading your mind, he just reposted one of my screen cap reactions. Here, have some more.

I know, it's criminal.

Just one?
What is it, camera AI or something?
What language are you working in?

Are you that LOTGH autist that sperged out in the PS2 general about how seeing multiple LOTGH images was some sort of conspiracy? If not, then I guess that autists function alike.

OP probably meant a literal script in English

FUCKING CHRIST
I DECIDE TO START READING BERSERK THEN OUT OF NOWHERE I SPOT TWO BERSERK THREADS ON Holla Forums AND YET ANOTHER ONE ON /TG/. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT THERE HAS BEEN AN INFLUX OF BERSERK REACTION IMAGES AS WELL. FURTHERMORE I WALKED IN ON MY SISTER WATCHING THE NEW SHIT CGI BERSERK ANIME TODAY. IT'S HAPPENING TO YOU TWO, IT'S HAPPENING TO ME, AND IT WILL HAPPEN TO YOU TWO

Oh shit, found the sperg.

Shit language.

Basic revenge stories.
Some can be good with proper motivation and character development, but most are just feel like a plot device and generally feel generic.

You were the hitler all along.

Protagonists shouldn't have personality because they are supposed to be you. This is why Gordon Freeman is so beloved.

Say I'm a sadistic creep that tortures small animals for fun. Why would I be doing goody-two shoes sidequests for old ladies?
I have never heard anyone so much as like him. They like the game for the game or narrative.

Nigger he was a scientist and had backstory, the whole game they were referring to him- not the player.
He was the silent strong type done right, not a mindless self-insert character.

not at all, considering he had no personality at all. and no, two lines of background story don't make a personality.

As semi-successful indie dev (I got a game out on Steam) - using this resource helped me out immensely - just as bad as buzzfeed, why are you even linking to this site? use allthetropes.orain.org/

All art is essentially stealing. So go over there, grab an unpopular trope, mix it up with 4 other tropes, water it down, simmer a little, and you got an original idea.

Otherwise if you think you have an original idea - look it up on there, and you'll probably find that it's a trope.

In which case repeat the abovementioned procedure.

okay, since marky mark is of many autismo use whatever the fucking website is mentioned above.

its
allthetropes.org
orain is dead, so they moved

Are you retarded or something?

Nothing is random, everything is linked

Since knowing every last variable in the universe is not possible for us, we can only perceive it as random

No alternative universes. No 4th wall breaking. Fuck that shit.

I swear to God I'm seeing a swastika in the second gif
