Slightly off-topic: a friend of mine who's renting an apartment said his landlord wants to sell the place. eh, of all the things to get upset about day 1 patches are low on the list. sure it means bugs were shipped with the game and it should have been delayed, but if the fixes are prompt and the game isn't shit I'll excuse it. Start with procedurally generated landscapes and whatnot during development, and then have the designers come along to edit and add unique details - or even have a shit-ton of smaller hand-placed templates which can be mixed and matched to overlay an environment or objects in the environment based on present conditions? Maybe even have it kind of "welded together on the spot" - wherein the terrain and skybox and lighting and all that shit is proceedurally generated, which triggers a randomized bunch of customized asset templates to be placed, and then have the engine do another pass to alter the proceedurally generated terrain and environment to better match the current customized template placements.

Then have a bunch of globals keeping track of certain variables so that you don't run across the same templates in roughly the same configuration too often?

To weigh on the "expecting people to pay" thing - if the game I develop is good enough I have no doubt people would like to pay for it. There will be pirates, and I can't blame anyone for being pirates because it's a choice between spending money and keeping it; However I also have no doubt there are people less disappointed and nihilistic than me when it comes to beliefs, so opening up a Patreon should be enough to keep me afloat so long as I have something to show for it.

Speaking of having something to show - been working my ass off to make a quality FPS arm rig. I'm surprised it looks as competent as it does at the moment, can't wait to redo topology and texture it finally.

What you're mentioning for additional detail to proc gen was mostly already done, and you can look for yourself at their different proc gen talks the devs have done (technical ones, not the nodev versions).
It's a nice tech demo at this point, but a nice game? Nope.

Even if they improve their current approach, and add more interesting templates and consistent creature designs; with the addition of adding even more assets for more varied templates for exploration, i.e. the terrain being more nuanced, it doesn't make it a good game.
Their current "game mechanics" only qualify it as a tech demo attempting to be a game, and barely anything more.
It needs more mechanic depth, in short, and that doesn't appear to be on the horizon.

I can attach this towards a full body rig. Right now, I'm concentrating on learning how to animate and rig properly, since this is one of the first organic "characters" that i've had to animate. I haven't done modelling, 3d animation nor rigging until I decided to make a game, so it's also a learning experience. Once I have the skill to animate hands and arms, animating the rest of the body shouldn't be very hard. Arms are considered to be the hardest thing about human characters to animate other than facial expressions for a reason.

It's a shooter with quirky mechanics. I've talked about it in another thread, where I also posted a placeholder shotgun model I made to test the hand animations with.

Because unless I do it myself from scratch, I'm not going to learn. I don't want to be a hack who uses premade assets and then wonder why his work looks like shit. No matter how poorly it might turn out in the end - I'll know I did it myself and as such it will be something to learn from.

Games are going to release unfinished ALL THE TIME NOW (and they have in the past too).
The thing is its a tools issue.
The tools to create the modern video game aren't picking up as much of the slack as they need to and so deadlines and other factors require this unfinished nature of AAA games.

Consider that you could bang out an NES game in an afternoon, an SNES level game in a weekend, a PS1 game in a week, a PS2 game in a month, and something along the lines of an early PS3/360 game in maybe a year and a half.
And those are figures given that you'll be alone.
The reason is the TOOLS have caught up to a point where that is possible. Problem is, those games aren't really needed now.

I guess, but that's not comparable at all. At least the game worked, it just had lots of bugs. But No Man's Buy isn't even starting up for half of the players, and for the other half it keeps crashing constantly. Same for the new Sim City, it just doesn't work.

Since games started being released full of bugs that aren't fixed for weeks. Once people started having to deal with that Day One patches seem less bad. Things that are worse basically shifted the perception of what's acceptable to most people.

This game is exactly what the developer said it would be, you have a huge galaxy to explore with limitless variations, The fact that you name every planet and animal you find is just incredible,The game is randomly generated and looks stunning. It is the first game EVER that lets you name whole planets and species. It really is an something you have to experience for yourself, just buy it.

Ignore all the bad reviews from gamers with no imagination looking for a cod style shoot em up in space, base building promised in free updates. And anyone who whines about performance issues is just too stupid to find the graphics options. I'm honestly amazed that such a small team was able to create this whole universe with 18 quintillion planets and countless galaxies and that even then they're going to continue expanding and improving on the experience.

We had to know for school so I went and borrowed my friend's bike and just walked it up a hill and then sat on it and coasted down with my feet close to the ground ready to catch me. There's honestly nothing new in nms. Space engineers had the whole "minecraft in space" thing going on years ago. It's not great, but is still better than the half assed gameplay in NMS.
As for the "exploration" and "scale" of the game, space engine does it better without charging $60 for the experience.

That's what I'm saying. Space Engineers might be early access, but they've been in early access for 3 years now without ever missing a thursday update. Space Engine I've not kept up with for a few years, but I remember the dev being fairly dedicated.

If I recall, they stopped Thursday updates for a while several times, but both were for perfectly good reasons - one was to port the entire engine itself to 64-bit (allowing far larger play areas), and one was for planets.

I bought into the hype on that one and ordered it before it was even available on Steam, when all you could do was build ships in creative, fly them, and smash them into each other to admire the pretty destruction. Never regretted it to be honest, although it's gotten so autistic and complex that I haven't played it in a while. I was crazy good at industry automation for a bit, though.
