Searching for a good jrpg/sjrpg

i have 1108 games on my backlog, i still get the feeling that there is a good jrpg somewhere. Maybe i only heard it one time and forgot about it? On my backlog are the usually ones, you know, koudelka, grandia, shinning force 3, golden sun and a ton more gems.

Some exotic tier gems too, Grand knight history, hoshigami, lunar - sanposuru, onimusha tactics i guess they are exotic tier and also a lot moreā€¦

i never played albert odyssey on saturn and since mednafen came up with a good working emu i give it a try too. The Complette translation of all 3 shinning force 3 scenario (v17) is in my backlog already and also ready to play or i continue to play Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army on ps2?

see, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a lot more. But still, i want more!

There must be one more game i missed.

You'll never fucking play them mate. One or two tops. Just abandon concept of backlog and just play shit you want right now. And drop is as soon as you stop having fun.

Thousand Arms is a pretty good JRPG/dating sim. Metal Max Returns and Emerald Dragon are a lot of too.

If you're looking for strategy RPGs(which is what I assum sjrpg stands for) Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, Der Langrisser, Langrisser 1, 2, and 4, Bahamut Lagoon, Just Breed, and Cyber Knight 1 and 2 are all good.

Thousands Arms is great and you are a good person for posting this.

have them already.

i know that the concept of a backlog can turn out to be cancer. But i drop games as soon i'm done with it, either at the end or as soon i stop having fun with it.

the thing is, for some reason i search for "THAT" one game, just more of a feeling, as if their is a jrpg/sjrpg out there that i still don't know but i know i need it!

Bit hard to make recommendations without knowing what you've already got on the backlog. Also knowing whether or not you can speak moon or not might also affect suggestions.

Of course not. I keep at most 3 games at one time, even then its too much.

You cant find "that" game just by looking at the name. Play first to see if its good

I'm playing Xenogears and it feels like a massive waste of time. But I've already spent 25 hours in it, so I can't stop.
Is the story supposed to be this game's saving grace or something? I didn't even get to the dreaded Disc 2 yet.

i had the same itch for jrpgs, been playing Lost Odyssey for a few days and it really hits the spot. Shame it will remain Xbox360 exclusive until working emulator

Yeah. At this point, Lost Odyssey's probably one of the few remaining 360 exclusive JRPGs, along with Blue Dragon (with the other games in the series going to the DS). Eternal Sonata and Star Ocean: TLH saw enhanced PS3 ports that came west, and while Tales of Vesperia's was never officially brought over, it's now the only completely fan translated PS3 game.

Sadly I'll probably never get around to Lost Odyssey. The exclusives on the 360 really aren't my thing, enough to warrant getting one anyhow.

Is there a particular reason Mistwalker avoided the PS3, instead opting to make Lost Odyssey and The Last Story for the 360 and Wii respectively instead (they also did a smattering of DS games as well)? And then all the recent games they've done have been for mobile.

it would take houres to write it down same for just making a screenshot.

i build a nice libary to have an overview, this i can show just so you can imagin how big it is.

Is this an oxymoron?

it is more of an art style, there are even good looking japan styled rpg games from italy, see doom&destiny.

I like this art style over the western style, not only because of their assets but also the way the story telling is. You can see that the japan influence in this developent is way different from the western style.

Well, since you mentioned Koudelka, the PS2 Shadow Hearts games are part of the same series and chronology, though they handle somewhat differently. Wild Arms is also a pretty enjoyable series in my experiences, and isn't as well known as some of the other big name ones out there by, say, Square, Namco, or Atlus (given that the series is owned directly by Sony and has had Media.Vision as a third party dev for it). Both are pretty well known among anons that enjoy JRPGs though.

The DS had a number of standalone JRPGs on it, some better known than others. Avalon Code is a pretty neat, if flawed JRPG about compiling an encyclopedia before the world ends (which winds up full of flavor text about a lot of stuff if that's our thing), so it can be born anew, and also gives you control over NPC and item attributes by attaching or removing codes.

Really though, if you're looking for stuff no one really talks about but don't know moon, you might look into various fan translations. Some games that have gotten them are a LOT less known than others are.

Don't be one of those people equating "JRPG" to be based on the art style or gameplay style used (the latter being how you get certain people claiming western developed games like South Park: The Stick of Truth are JRPGs). Granted, I suppose there's a stereotype to how JRPGs and WRPGs both are, but the prefix is pretty much just the region of origin, and you can apply all sorts of other tags to them "traditional, strategy/tactics, turn-based, real time, [X] inspired, etc).

I suppose that's just how I see it anyhow.

I'm playing Digital devil saga at home (AFK at the moment because vacation).

Good one if you're autistic.

Well Japan has certain art style and story telling flair.

I can very easily recognise Dragons Dogma or the Souls games as being Japanese.

Been meaning to get to that, and SMT on the whole sometime in the future, but given how big the series is (even just looking at ones brought west or fan translated), I'm not sure when to start on them (how much time I need to be able to devote, mainly), given I tend to play entries in a series one after another if I find myself liking them. Or is SMT a franchise you want to spread out between playing to avoid burn out?

One of the best JRPGs of last gen.

Better than FF13.

But utterly wasted on the xbox crowd. Xbox owners don't play JRPGs. Real shame, being exclusive killed the sales and any hope of a sequel.

Well I wouldn't play the whole series in one go. They're very slow and require some grinding.

Play some shooters in between.

i know, have them too. So, the usuelly ones that get every so often mention in those threads are on my backlog already.

SP - jrpg
never saw this as jrpg, never going to see it as jrpg.
i think also it need to be depending on the region but than there are games like dragon souls (action rpg) who are anything else than japan~ish

*dark souls

sorry

Have you tried radian historia?

thanks, will take a look!

I'd still consider the Souls series JRPGs of a sort (being that they are Japanese developed), but specifically western-inspired real-time combat JRPGs. But again, that's just me. I've seen a lot of people just opt for calling them WRPGs, either thinking the western influences outweigh the Japanese elements, or maybe just because they don't want to admit to liking a Japanese RPG.

Well, then chances are you're going to already have an idea on most JRPGs that came west that are worthwhile (or at least love it or hate ones to do some research on before playing), if you've lurked in what JRPG threads there've been often (and I've ton a fair amount of that over the years). I will mention the Baten Kaitos and Lost Kingdoms series though, if they haven't been brought up that much.

Again, if you really want ideas for games you may not have seen brought up much, fan-translations might be the way to go (as well as games that may have been left moon only, if you know Japanese; heard neat things about Dark Kingdom SFC and Granhistoria in the past, but no one's bothered to pick them up for fan translation for whatever reason). Maybe stuff like Lennus II, Lagrange Point, Chaos Seed, Glory of Heracles series (I, II, and III are fan translated, with IV in the works) or the Dark games (Dark Lord, Dark Law, and Dark Half) might be of interest?

Alright, still debating on whether to start with DDS 1 and 2 or Nocturne though.

Alright, a few things:
It starts slow, but it gets much better as you progress, deep story and stuff. You'll want to do all the secondary stuff you can, trust me
Lastly, Aht is best satyr

I really don't get it. I mean, they're certainly not the first company to have a series of mostly standalone entries with some getting direct numbered sequels here and there (IE: not a loose chronology, but focusing on the same characters or at least their offspring), but I'd think that if fans weren't overly receptive of the first game, it would be better to just move on than try to keep forcing the game and its cast down people's throats. Hence seventh gen being stuck with the series not moving on from XIII until Square had had enough, and only now finally reaching a point of release for Final Fantasy XV with eighth gen being current. That's like eight years of Final Fantasy XIII (though the DS and PSP did see various ports, remakes, and spinoffs that weren't FFXIII related, at least).

Also, doing some checking around, apparently some Nintendo Wars-like game for the SFC (which never saw a cart/boxed release, instead coming on Nintendo Power flash/memory carts instead) called Genjuu Ryodan now has a fan translation in the works, if that's something you might want to keep up with. Just thought it might be worth mentioning.

this

i realize years ago, that the only way to get some new and fresh jpgs is by going through the translation section. So i quite lurk often romhacking.net but i guess i reached the limit here too.

on my backlog too, they are somehow very impressive!

RHDN works well as a database of what's out there, but some people have been expressing a sentiment at the site angling towards SJWism, what with front page articles about hacks to "fix" Shadowrun and LGBT pacman. Though admittedly in a number of cases, they either seem to let the person that made a hack or translation write the entry for it themselves, or copypasta from the original site's own description.

If you want some ideas for games to keep tabs on the fan translation progress of, Absolute Zero's still chipping away at Tales of Phantasia X (this one's been getting the most focus lately), Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X (a supposedly really fun remake of a costume/class based dungeon crawler spinoff), and Tales of Destiny DC (Director's Cut of the PS2 remake), Nightcrawler/TransCorp is working on Glory of Heracles IV and Song of the Angel SFC, and Dynamic Designs has Aretha I and II, Destiny of an Emperor (Game Boy), G.O.D., La Wares, Oni II, Princess Minerva, and Super Shellmonsters Story II in progress.

There's also GBA Temp forum threads about Swordcraft Story 3 and Nora to Toki that I keep tabs on, while the guy translating Sol Trigger has his own site (which he has been very lazy about getting around to posting updates about lately. Zero no Kiseki has an effort in the works as well. Also, while not quite the same, Ar Tonelico II has an ongoing fan retranslation effort to remove NISA's shit, fix bugs, and lately restoring and translating content that apparently wasn't even used in the final Japanese release (it's on Beta 4 right now, thanks to them getting some help from a hacker more familiar with working with Gusts' code).

got my attention when i saw it on nicoblog, sadly only the menu is translated and since than no newer updates showed up. Just now checked it and it's still the same.

Since we're talking about Tales, is Ufotable doing a good job with the adaption? it's beautiful but

huh, ok, forget what i wrote here

turns out main story is fully translated
talesofnaridanx.weebly.com/downloads.html

so, just waiting for a patch!? Looking at the date
it's now over a haldf year ago and still no full patch? the fuck?

I'm pretty sure the Nicoblog one is from a former effort. Absolute Zero doesn't release partial patches. You can keep tabs on it at Absolute Zero's site ( a0t.co ), as they do monthly updates on their current projects.

But again, ToPX is the current focus, so it might be a good while before NDX has a full patch. The guy in charge of translation there, Thoroughim, really likes NDX though, so it's more of a personal project than anything (given how few escort titles the west has seen to begin with, there's a lot more demand for main series games). They've got a decent track record for finishing what they start though, barring issues like Kajitani-Eizen (who they were working with on a prior project) canceling the Hearts DS translation.
