The only reason is that its TECHNICALLY copyright infringement. It won't hurt their name or make them lose money in anyway. They only do it because they can. Even then AM2R falls under fair use since its free.

The thing with AM2R is that I could see them having justification for taking it down if the guy making it was trying to profit off their IP, or if Nintendo themselves had any plan to remake Metroid II themselves, and from what I know of it, neither has been the case.

I suppose fan made games/remakes are a gray area like fan-translation, but in the case of the latter, most companies really don't care much unless the person/group working on it are planning to sell an English version for profit (hence various teams adding those "if you paid for this patch you were scammed" screens to the boot up of the game), or if the company itself suddenly decides to bring the game over in some format (such as Square with FF Type-0, thankfully they were too late to hit the guy with a C&D). If anything, some producers/directors find it cool that westerners like a series enough to try to bring it into English even if the company themselves never deemed it worth doing (Hideo Baba's expressed as much with Tales).

I suppose fan-games though might be somewhat different though, but I'd think that a company could appreciate an effort from a fan to take it upon themselves to take a game that may not hold up all that well anymore, and do an apparently quite good remake of it. Unless it's so good that it reflects poorly on recent effort.

Maybe they're intending to pull a Marvel and put their entire backlog into a mobile app. I wouldn't know what kind of reach they would expect from something like that, though.

Companies want to maximize profits. It's all they care about. Issuing a DMCA costs money. You have to hire lawyers, etc. When you do something that costs money, it's expected that the result would mean more money to them, otherwise they wouldn't do it. Protecting your brand is a way to get you money indirectly, I get that.
But the Nintendo Power thing? They can't get absolutely anything out of it. Not direct money, no indirect money through brand recognition or other means. Nothing.

In terms of the Metroid 2 remake. Nintendo was rumored to have tried to remake the game at least twice.

It seems like a massive missed opportunity to let a company like Wayforward not remake the game (possibly in a hand drawn animation style).

Little do they realize that as they do this, more and more people get fucking pissed and refuse to financially support such a scummy company.
