Lost in Concept

Post games that looked awesome in beta, pre-release, etc. but ended up getting re-worked into a worse game.

I'll start.

I'm still amazed how they ruined this idea
FIIRRREEE EEMBLUM!!!!!!

Oh please. The only good thing about beta MGRR is that wallrunning part

everything from ubisoft

Reminder that the people heading that project admitted they didn't think they could do it. So instead of giving the project to someone else they decided that the best course of action was to make something completely different.

are even trying?

Sonic R was Sonic Adventure before they relooked at the concept, went to South America, and recreated it into a crappy Sonic adventuring game in 3D.

Sticker Sta

ANOTHER SPORE THREAD?

...

How is this any different from the final game? I just started replaying MGR this weekend and I can't tell the difference.

...

Holy shit, all of that concept art was fucking amazing. Shame the game was nowhere near as balls to the wall as we woudl have hoped, and even worse had some shitty ass morality system jammed in there

NEVER FORGET

It still hurts

...

Came into the thread to say this.
How did they fuck up so bad?

this is what happens when you spend more money on advertising instead of development

Remember how they fucked this game and renamed it fuse, and then Blizz stole half of the name and entire aesthetic and now is making insane money on it?

So, Destiny?

i bet insmoniac and EA are feeling pretty retarded right now

This makes me very angry

But then Valve thought "Too much work, let's just have G-man tell you some shit about rice and shine, and something about ashes"

okay damn watching this again its so frustrating that the focus tested found this game too 'kiddie" even though more dudes get violently killed in this trailer and all the overwatch material is effectively PG-13

They already had something which looked decent but then they shat out mediocre trash.
I wonder what else they had which was pretty much finished only to get cut out.

:^)

I really fucking wish that scumbag didn't leak the game, the original concepts sounded so much cooler than what they changed the game to as a result.

That Eli looks fucking dope.
Breencast is not good though, all that dark is usual dystopia shit. What made HL2 unique was the way the city was designed. It felt like a regular city, but it definitely stood out.
Combine soldier is also pretty close.

One thing usually comes to mind when I look at artwork from the beta "wow this so fucking metal"

it was an e3 trailer so it was all smoke and mirrors, but even under that they still had the same basic stuff under the hood, weak gunplay, wandering around listening to NPCs talk instead of actual action, and everything lining up a little too perfectly for the player instead of setting things up in a way that the player can set the pieces up themselves

LITERALLY ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS MASH DEVIL SURVIVOR TYPE GAMEPLAY WITH FIRE EMBLEM
I WILL NEVER STOP BEING MAD

Reminder that you could have played this but some German fuck ruined it all.

There are even screenshots of the Sky Chase mission running on the Saturn with classic characters. Sonic X-treme went changed genres a lot basically.

Damn…

That actually looks pretty good.

More actual aliens would've fucking kicked ass, the only aliens present in HL2 were headcrabs, Vortigaunts and Advisors along with that one Ichthyosaur only seen in the very beginning of the game. It's the aftermath of the Black Mesa Incident, aliens actively roam Earth now, what the fuck happened to all the Alien Grunts, bullsquids, houndeyes? Eli mentions getting his leg chewed off by a bullsquid but nothing else is ever shown, and the Combine we see are more human than alien because they're all mentioned to be forcibly or willingly cyborg'd humans. Only their shock-troops like Striders or Hunters are really aliens.

Shit, they should've kept stuff like the super soldier or the heavily-armored guard with the head.

I think the worst part is that no porn will come out of all the cute designs

They should have kept the Cremator in the game, the guy is just menacing all around and would have given us access to the flamethrower.

Reminder that in Mass Effect 3 you were supposed to be losing on every mission
You would have your limbs blown off and had to replace it with tech, most likely of reaper origin
Eventually you would become a ruthless fuck sacrificing people like nothing and calculationg losses, and potentially turn into another Saren
Virmire survivor would have pulled a gun on you and judged your decisions, acting as a new Shepard

So what made them change their minds? Sounds like an amazing ending to Mass Effect.

Vid Related, some russian modders are apparently working on a mod that is supposed to recreate the beta, so far it's in beta estate, though no idea if they are still working on it.

I still can't understand how in under a year before the Wii was released they managed to turn a 3D platformer starring Rayman into a minigame collection (and also the basis for Just Dance strangely enough).

And then after still decided to not make a new 3D Rayman game.

In Dishonored, the original idea didn't have a mana bar. All abilities used your health instead, which radically changed the game and didn't let you just blink away from fucking everything.

I always heard that Valve scrapped most of that stuff before they were hacked.

They changed it for the same reason they dropped the Dark Energy plotline. Likely the need to be another fun story about beating the evil, but the game still constantly tries to make you depressed and shows you shepard acting all sad and shit. As a result the game is a fuckign slog to play and has no strong moments at all.

Not the female combine though, they are still in the files.

It can't be fun if you have Shepard crying about every little thing.

In the original concept bullets actually fucked you up pretty bad, making even the regular soldiers capable of wailing on you. Along with this enemies would've required more finesse to kill, removing a lot of the standard hack-and-slash flare that the final product maintained.

The original concept also wanted to let you destroy terrain and collapse it on enemies.

Basically they originally wanted it to be "hardcore cyborg ninja action" but it became "balls-to-the-walls cyborg ronin action".

...

Original idea for Heavy Rain had Ethan have a spiritual connection with the origami killer, so he saw the victims during his blackouts, came to the street where the brother of the killer died and had an origami in his hand. As a result he reasonably suspected himself.
In the final game that element is not there, yet he still knows about the victims before they are reported, still has blackouts, comes to that exact street with an origami in his hand BUT he is in no way connected to the killer.
The only David Cage game where the supernatural element made sense and he fucking blew it.

Bioshock 1.

don't know how to webm

I was so hype for this. Then i saw what is became before its release.

DAMN I MAKE THIS LOOK GOOD

Because,I may be wrong, but a good part of the team under all the raymans are gone for good.

porn where?
Yeah, there's a video with functioning weapons still on the files.
I don't care a lot about the Half Life 3 when meme,but
Blue Shift 2 and Opposing Force 2 when?

...

If Valve is to be believed (which is probably not), they stated at one point that they would've ditched these concepts anyway regardless of the leak.

By the way, some of the older models and textures that weren't in the leak have been discovered a few days ago.

They did, almost all of the beta's contents were scrapped or only half-completed (and had been for months) by the time Deutschey leaked it. Even with Valve trying to prosecute, the leaked files weren't at all indicative of what the final game was going to be, just what an original concept for it was going to be (ie better and more blatantly post-apocalypse and 1984).

The cremator's entire concept is fucking scary when presented to a species that mourns and reveres its dead, just casually energy-blasting organic debris off the streets and pretend nothing happened. They were a lot more committed to Half-Life 1's psych-horror guidelines in the original concepts.

Shit, nice. Anywhere I can poke around in the discovered stuff, or is it just on The Cutting Room Floor or something?

Interesting. Where was this stuff found?

The developer of Portal Beta mod had access to some of the Valve's servers and leaked it on Facepunch (i-it's not like I even go there, I've found out about it on a different place).

Sorry, I don't have the links for the models. Also, 2002 Gravity Gun was apparently found as well.

...

Half-Life.

They didn't fuck anything up in the art department. Story and gameplay is the problem.

It looks ever so slightly better than what we got. Not amazing, just mediocre, generic, and boring rather than shit.

So it was actually supposed to be another survival horror?

God damn… I'm mad now.

They never said that. In fact the Devil Survivor guy was heavily involved with the project.

They just thought it'd be boring to make a game that IS could make and since they're ATLAS they should make the type of game that they are famous for.

Poor anons never knowing that focus group ruined this game.

I thought they changed it because they kicked the lead writer who was in charge of it and completely handed it over to the dumbfuck who created Cerberus and mary sued them into being a main faction.

Damn it, user.

Don't fucking remind me.

...

Shit?

And don't even let me started on Stalker.

The game isn't shit sadly.

The battle system is pretty interesting and well designed. The game is well balanced and isn't completely ugly. however the storyline is pretty retarded, the musical numbers are middling at best with only a few that actually stand out. The animations are stiff as fuck and robotic so the dance numbers are bleh. The character design is uninteresting as fuck as well.

The problem is the game is literally just Persona with Fire Emblem characters instead of SMT demons. If you like Persona you'll probably like it.

As someone who was absolutely TERRIFIED of the pink elephants on parade part in Dumbo, that thing looks absolutely amazing.

Trailer for Thi4f with Russell as Garret as it should've been. Probably would've still been a shit game, but at least the voice acting would've been better.

...

But DOUK was mentioned here

Tales of Phantasia went through a lot of changes before finalization. Disappointing too, cause I'm really fond of the cute design Mint had before they decided to just make her a white cleric in white clothes.

This is what faggots actually believe.

So shit.

The first design doesn't really look like a Kosuke Fujishima design to me. It's a pretty original design though.

WHAT THE FUCK

THEY WANTED TO MAKE A 3D VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL RAYMAN?

I HAD ENOUGH WITH RAYMAN 2 GOING 3D GOD FUCKING DAMMIT I DIDN'T NEED TO SEE THIS FUCK YOU

First one is too cutesy and cheesy
Second one is obviously a bit generic but it fits better with a story that has dark aspects to it

It's more Persona-lite than anything. It doesn't share any style from any of them and focuses more on Otaku and japanese media culture rather than "high schoolers doing high school things" The theme of the game is also not as depressing as most persona games.

...

Post Alien Colonial Marines already.

My memory on the subject's fuzzy, but I believe Phantasia had a different character designer first, and then switched to Fujishima much later in production. It's why the original SNES Phantasia had different sprites from the character designs– the sprites were based on the old designs. All I really remember for sure, though, is that Phantasia's production was a mess.

I think it looks fine for the game. Plus, I don't think the seriousness of the design matters much when in the end it'd look like 3rd pic.

...

Oh looks like they're going for a Japene-

The chibi thing is a bit of a suspense of disbelief. Characters do look serious when portrayed in more detail, like in the avatars, but they couldn't be portrayed like that in battle due to hardware limitations. It's assumed they don't actually look like their chibi counterparts.

Sonic Adventure and Sonic X-treme are unrelated games. The various incarnations of X-Treme were all developed by Sega Technical Institute, starting with concepts on the Genesis, while Sonic World was the remains of what would have been Adventure on the Saturn.

There was also going to be a DLC that added Holidays to the Tamerialian calendar but it got canceled. There are still voice files for it online.

Le qt loli is more generic nowadays.

I would have loved classic sonic in 3d with that era's vivid graphics. I really love the playstation/saturn style graphics.

WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST DO THIS?

I have no idea. Using 3D models may save on development time, but it's a huge budget strain, and Mighty No. 9 fucked up on both sides of that fence.

Like this?

tight budget, goy :^)

…thanks for reminding me.

Mr. Businessman and his merry band of fuckups crushing the KS money until the pip squeaked was a part of the reason.

lel that shit is farmed and at no point were they ever going to actually make something in the vein of it. it literally only exists to inflate their employee count so they can fool more investors.

So Sim City 3000 didn't exactly suck, but it basically would have been Sim City 4 but like in the 90s. Except EA freaked out that people could not play a fully 3D city in 1999 so they nuked it and basically redid it as "Sim City 2000 v2.0".

Oh sorry, meant to say 1997. That when SC3K in 3D existed.

wow it didn't look like shit

IIRC they trashed creating and using their own engine with UE4 midway through development because of it's meme power on the internet which was also the cause for one of the first fuckhuge delays. Every one after that was because they didn't know what the fuck they were doing with UE4.

Still looks like total shit really.

The only thing they changed was the art style and even then they just stole that from a short movie on youtube. The rest of the game would have been dull and boring and that trailer honestly looks like complete trash with dull washed out colors and shitty "MUH REALISM!" and at the time it would have been just another generic shooter with a neat mechanic to it that would have been forgotten. The art style was pretty much the only reason it was so successful because it made the game look less generic and thus more interesting to the average masses.

Yeah, low-poly, unfiltered, low-res, with a colorful popping color pallet. Would take a lot of effort to do it correctly nowadays.

I'll get called autistic for this but Minecraft was the shit back when it was still in the early meme game phase and somewhat niche.

I don't just hate it because it's popular or because it's owned by M$ now. The current game might be more technically competent (but still Javaslow) and have more content, but I think it reached its actual peak fun in mid-2011 and has only declined since.

The major changes of 1.8 and gold release seemed at the time like the foundation of a more robust game with more variety in playstyle and deeper mechanics. Instead Mojang kept adding trivial bullshit and meme features for their ever-younger target audience and left important things like food, potions/enchanting, combat, and exploration completely half-baked to this day.

The Microsoft buyout was only the straw the broke the camel's back.

that is called posting you fucking retard

CoDbrobux are a hell of a drug, user.

Blame 13-year-old CoD kiddies in the late 2000s, user.

have they released the plugin API yet?

At least mods can help with making the game more well-rounded. I remember never caring for Mineycrafta until some friends got me to play it with them with a bunch of mods installed for abilities, flora, mobs, locations, crafting, alloys, etc. It was tons of fun, not to mention comfy af.

NEVER EVER

Of course not.

its assumed erroneously

...

Well Shadow of the Colossus was originally supposed to be a multiplayer game.

I don't get it. This doesn't look any better than Fuse.

The game was leaked by some kid in Germany and Valve scrapped everything because of it.

theyre likely referring to the overall delivery. violence could be considered "kiddie" anyways. this has a borderlands vibe to it.

If I recall, it was also Disney being reluctant to let the devs make things too dark, since their mascot was in it.

Is that supposed to be Force Unleashed?

Halo as it was supposed to be: third-person, vast open world, online team multiplayer. Then Bungie got bought by Microsoft and the game was turned into My First FPS.

is this reboot

It looks like shit because the game was made to run on a mac.

It's so fucking boring. Hit the weakness and then spend the next hour watching chained attacks, and yet its required to get anywhere whether is drops or performance stars or money. It should have been more like DDS.

Fun fact:
in one of the earlier prototypes when shown on stage they hadn't made AI for the NPC's so what they did was have members of the staff actually control individual NPC's just so they could actually show the game off to the public.

It's ok, the replacement gave me a good feel

youre killing me

...

Nigger do you not about Bungie's early history?

Fixed. Halo was originally just a sci-fi variant of Bungie's RTS Myth.

Also that trailer you posted was already made when Bungie was getting purchased by Microshit.

Here's the 1999 trailer.

So were they developing the game for the Dreamcast or something.

No you stupid nigger:

Go and read Bungie's history and then come back.

Now why would i need to do that when i've got a bungie employee here to pester.

Who's that?

...

The game never interested me, but if it looked like it was originally supposed to in the concepts before they removed all the supernatural (embed related) I'd be all over it.

Happy now user?

SHAUN

Essentially scrapped and remade the game a few different times, up until their publisher said 'enough is enough Ken, you have x months to release what you have'

Then they quickly cobbled together some storyline ideas and assets and pushed that out…to incredible critical acclaim.

But the game still didn't turn a profit despite having something like 3.7 million sales in 3 months and 11 million since 2015. It fucking turns out that Ken Levine scrapped and remade the game enough times that they had enough assets to make at least 5 or 6 full games.

Take Two then basically gutted Irrational Games since Ken Levine was a fucking moron

Yeah, that was the first concept, but it only got people's attention with the Macworld trailer.

They scrapped all their work at least once, I remember an interview with an artist saying he left the company because they scrapped the entire slums area he worked on for a year and that he was just too salty to stick around.

However on release the slums area was in the game, I think we can infer that they kept remaking the game, until they panicked and built what we call bioshock: infinite in a one year time frame.

You could practically make a whole other game out of all the concept art. The same goes for Half-Life 1.

Finally that one corpse model makes sense.

Neat, got a link?

I've always wanted to see what a game would be like where all the enemy characters are controlled by other players. You could start as a weak goomba-like creature and work your way up until you get to be the protagonist. Or maybe one player could control groups of enemies like an RTS.

Face it, this game was never going to be good. It's time to take off the rose-tinted blinders.

Haven't seen that before. I can only assume it's an early version of Morrowind although the visuals look far better than vanilla Morrowind (or anything out at the time for that matter)

The e3 demo showed so much promise. They could have used those graphics for PC at least.

Valve was lost long before Steam convinced Valve to completely stop making games.

Isn't it amazing Destiny is pretty much another chopped down version of the TPS Halo?

1. The RTS incarnation was dropped long, long before the initial public reveal at Macworld. It stayed as a TPS throughout most of its development, only being hurriedly babbified in its final few months before release.
2. Myth wasn't an RTS, but a revolutionary RTT focusing purely on tactical unit control to the exclusion of construction or recruitment.

Tomb Raider reboot was supposed to be much more like a survival horror than an Uncharted clone.

Did somebody say The Crossing?

rest in peace arkane, you were too good for this world ;_;

...

You mean the models? I've managed to scoop up some links without going to Facepunch:

I think the original sonic concept arts looked pretty dobe.
It feels vaporwave

This is not an in-game screenshot, but mock-up art for what the UI would look like.

That first image reminds me of the water level on the game gear/master system version of sonic 2 Aqua Lake I think it's called. There are parts of the level you can't access unless you skim Sanic across the water.
I don't remember any of the other games having a mechanic that let you skim the surface of the water like a stone, though you could run across the surface of the water in parts of Hydrocity in Sonic 3.

Prey 2 was such a cool concept. Why the fuck did HH die?

I've said this before but the hilarious thing in hindsight is that the whole edgy furry thing was basically what FNAF ended up doing.

All those autism-bucks that Scott made could have been Disney's if they had stuck with the original vision.

Destiny

Bethesda.

I'm STILL pissed off about that one. That was one of the last games I got hyped over, the trailer just by itself had everything I wanted.

FUCK.

Here's the crazy fucking thing about this. I KNOW I played this version in a demo kiosk at Toys R Us as a kid. In America, nowhere near SpaceWorld.

This is the version of Sunshine I dreamed of until I finally bought the game two years later, only to be left with a feeling of not getting the right game, until I saw this video five months ago. The city has the same layout, the soul coins were collectable and the UI is the same.

How the fuck did an American Toys R Us get their hands on this Japan-only Dev beta?
