Saturday Night Horror Thread

'ere we go again.

That's tough. On the one hand, if I'm very immersed and identify with the character then I can feel a very real sense of terror when things go down. When the character is showcased with a strong emphasis on their own independent persona, it gets into a more unsettling place, feels like more than a game and gets to me on a deeper, more melancholy level. When done well, that sort of unnerving can really be strong. Watching from the outside as the protagonist suffers and the horrors win.

Pretty fucking late pal

Whenever you play a character, their decisions are yours, not their own.

SH2 and SH3 tossup

this is a really good way to describe the way i felt the first time I saw Jill Valentine get choked out by the Nemesis, or later on watching Leon get chainsawed (the fact that he tries to stop the chainsaw with his hands, like, he's so desperate to save his life that he sacrifices his hands and still ends up getting carved up made me feel really weird), shit like that

or even everyone's favorite game ever, the last of us, watching joel get his head ripped in two by the huge-ass spore tank thing

…user

TLOU was not the worst game ever made, Satan

Personally I don't see any horror games I plan on buying anytime soon besides maybe RE7. Any big budget or niche horror games I should look forward to?

REmake. Honestly it's incredible, they really were able to remake an old game as new. Still looks nice, too. Also Condemned 1, I personally wished the developer made more games like those instead of FEAR.

Watching a character I identify with die.

It is a mystery

It wasn't even a game though.

...

I guess that makes The Order: 1886 a game as well then.

There's always Condemned 2 :^)

By most any technical definition, it was. It was an unequivocally bad game, but it was a game.

...

Yeah my odonghe
Back to the old translation, too

I always wonder why that was never ported to PC.

Also I don't seem to hear positive things about it compared to the first one, especially since I hear the final boss is just a shouting match.

I'll say it every horror thread, the first 2-3 hours is really, really good, but it just loses its shit halfway through.

It would be nice to be able to play it without it being 22fps with strong motion blur, that's for sure.

This actually is really intriguing - the game outright tells you that you are the puppet player, and that the life of the puppet depends on you.

Perhaps the possibility of being responsible for the death of another produces more anxiety than the possibility of being responsible for the death of one's avatar?

hue

...

I would assume most people who would be interested in playing Pathologic have already played it by this point. Still probably should have been under a spoiler.

Hey post the Russian witch one

Arab witch, actually

what the fug is happening in these two

The first, from what I heard, either was part of an old car commercial or some kind of art movie.

The second allegedly is some fucker in the Saudi-Arabian desert who runs into this old hag-thing that's blocking the road. Pretty obvious that it's faked, though.

criminally underrated

The issue is that horro comes from the unexpected and when i play a horror game i expect scares and thus i am not scared.

imagine playing a game like stardew valley and it slowly turns into the wickerman.

Unlocking that ending was really when I knew just how good Pathologic was.
Not a horror game though

Please do not invite DreadOut porn.

It defines the genre.

This is why I like indie horror games. They still follow similar patterns, and you know that they will try to scare you, but you have no idea how.

Pathologic completely escapes categorization, it's part of what makes it great.

what is DreadOut?

You rang?

Indonesian budget clone of Fatal Frame for PC

So I was thinking of getting Siren from the PSN. Is it worth it? I've only ever heard mixed things about it, but I need something to fill the void after running through SH 1-4.

I'd personally say it fits the description of a survival horror RPG on all three counts, but I see what you mean.

Nooooooo

You'll be getting bouts of nostalgia from SH1, although don't expect the gameplay to be very similar. It's worth playing, I recommend it.

Sounds promising. Do you know if there's any differences in the PS4 version? That's the one I was planning on getting, but some of the PS2 games there are different from the originals. Like the GTA games having less songs than before, Ape Escape 2 with the UK voice actors, etc. I just want the original thing without having to dust off my PS2.

It's an interesting game to play honestly, though don't expect it to play anything like Silent Hill. It's very difficult, you play as multiple characters, stages are shorter and objective focused compared to SH1-4's design, but for a PS2 horror game its certainly interesting, especially the whole gimmick of sight-jack to see the world through the enemies.

this absolutely looks like a thing i should invite porn of.

my image was from pic related though

Some drawfag actually made her pic of Ira (of said pic) giving you a blow/tonguejob, but the quality was so-so

if anyone saved it…

That makes us two.

Wouldn't know, sorry.

She looked like she could unhinge her jaw and suck a mean dick, I just assumed. This is my fault.

I have the wierdest boner right now.

We all do, user.

We all do.

Gonna play trough RE4 today,I haven`t played this game since I was 15,and recall it being very good so I decided to see how well it held up over the years.

Well, how is it?

I played Spooky's house of jumpscares

Jesus fucking Christ, how can people find this shit good? I understand enjoying the mockery of the horror genre or liking the cute loli, but for fuck's sake, who would play through such a monotonous game?

What does that have to do with horror games? :^)

Isn't it "Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion" now? I have it installed but still haven't gotten around to it yet.

The only thing that came close to utilising EVP was the spirit radio in Fatal Frame 2 and 3. I think it'd be hard to build a whole game around it though, unless it was like that j-horror film that had spirits breaking out of electronic items

It sort of works at first because it goes from cute scares like "Wow, can't believe I was spooked by this jumpscare" to actual sort of creepy stuff, but at the same time the gameplay is as barebones as you can get and it's just still images chasing after you.

Pretty much this. The game begins as a parody of sorts and the comical factor is taken from the fact that the jumpscare ghosts you are facing are more adorable than they are scary.

And then it all goes downhill.

Sadly, repeating the scheme for 99 (?) levels wasn't the best of ideas.

What would you guys recommend for PC? I don't want to play any emulated games since the controls are often fucked in them. I've already played the Dreadout series, F.E.A.R. series, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Dead Space 1+2, and a literal fuckton of free and flash games.

Alone in the Dark if you don't mind emulating DOS, Silent Hill 2 and 3 if you don't mind slightly inferior PC versions. Penumbra's good. Lots of point-and-clicks like Sanitarium and IHNMAIMS.

Pathologic was also mentioned a lot earlier and there's also its spiritual sequel, The Void.

fug, need more!

Also

So I finished Silent Hill 2 for the first time earlier today. Holy shit I think I'm in love with this game, the puzzles are fun and the atmosphere is perfect, I started my second playthrough straight away after getting the In Water ending for my first run. The voice acting stayed pretty comfortably between bad and horrible but most of the time it added to the off kilter vibe I found. Even through the sometimes cheesy delivery I felt the game handled some mature themes really well and everything was connected thematically.

Are the other Silent Hill games much like 2? I'm thinking of buying 3 next. I want to keep an eye out for more PS2 horror games but damn SH2 really blew me away.

The voice acting in Silent Hill is really nuanced and well-directed, it's not supposed to be "cheesy".
Mostly

I can definitely agree with that for Maria but for the most part it feels more just a product of it's time rather than any expert direction as you say; still works great though.

If you really loved the game, I'd encourage you to watch some documentaries and interviews about how meticulously the voice acting was directed, as well as how meticulously everything about the game was directed.

Also do not go straight to SH3 because it's not going to make sense if you haven't played SH1.

Just finishsed Fatal Frame IV with a friend. It started off pretty good and then turned to shit over the last 10 hours. That series used to be good and now look at it.

I stumbled upon a video with a girl who looks a lot like Daniela from Haunting Ground. Fapped my balls off. Maybe I should make a webm of it.

Last thing I bought was Layers of Fear, didn't get to it yet.
Completed Haunting Ground again, last time was 6 years ago. Next up is either Outlast or the PS4 remaster of the original Siren.
I've yet to play KotD, but the original had extremely uneven quality. There were some stellar moments, but for the most part the game was bland as fuck.
I'd say the latter, since unlike your player character, they aren't protected by virtue of being the representation of the player and can't start over.
I always experience mixed feelings when I start a new game again and meet for the first time a character who is destined to die later on in the plot.
I've listened to SH OSTs more times than I can count. The next spookiest thing on the list would be either Haunting Ground or Drakengard, though the latter isn't a horror game.
Around wat

silly user, such things dont exist

Bought Evil Within on sale, figure $15 is a fair price.
Going to play Evil Within some tonight.
Don't know what your talking about, I'll have to play and find out.
Individual definitely. When your character dies there's not much dread involved when you know your coming back.
Silent Hill is all I can think of off the top of my head.
Technology picking up evil was also done in Silent Hill and they're are several games that implement that concept.

Please don't

Didn't Layers of Fear end up getting some DLC too? I couldn't make it through the base game.

r34, user

It's on paheal. Nothing special.

All I have to say is that Evil Within makes a god awful first impression, but it does get better after that. Especially figuring out the story which doesn't blatantly tell everything to you.

the fuck did you get this?

user, sauce?

It got an AR game instead of a port of any fucking PZ game on PS2, and the 5th game was digital only with 0 hype. Who knows, with modern Nintendo 3DS PZ would get the Fed Farce treatment.

Fuck Nintendo, when can it become multiplatform again?

Bumping for spooks.

Discuss: is Fran Bow's ending real?

Saturday Night Horror Thread and it's Wednesday, may as well turn it into the Horror General at this point.

Which part? The supernatural stuff? No good reason to say it was all in her head or a result of the medication or anything like that, but it's not as though a supernatural influence is necessary to explain certain things that happen during the game.

I really think making Horror Generals is a better idea.

Help me, Holla Forums

Why am I such a bitch when it comes to vodeo games? I am not a bitch irl, it has something to do with the screen I think.
Also not too spooky games that can be played with one hand?

You lived through the war, you said? I won't bother for details if you wish not to say.

You probably contracted PTSD or something along the lines of that. To average players, horror games are games simply made to thrill. In your case, they are reopening scars inflicted upon you. I wouldn't think that the games are really that scary (especially FEAR 1) but that your head is telling you that you've been through enough.

Try not playing in a dimly lit room, for one. I'm sure other anons have some more helpful advice (probably other veterans like yourself).

Probably would help for the volume to be a bit low instead of having it cranked up. Also cranking the brightness setting to the max.

Thanks. I will try that.

Also I don't know about the PTSD but I never had a checkup after so maybe.

Try using audio normalization. It helps a lot with jumpscares not raping your ears.

git gud

FEAR isn't even scary, man, go get a security blanket or something
