I've been thinking about this and I reckon it could actually work fairly well. It certainly wont have the problem that TF2 had where turtling was so effective that the game would just turn into a boring stalemate.

I did wonder if the Tanks wouldn't be as useful but it dawned on me that since they actually move just as fast as everyone else they would probably be just as viable. Hell D.Va might end but being a useful flag runner since she has both the health to tank damage and the mobility to get from a to b faster (and keep moving even after her mech blows up).

Tracer would be a concern, but it dawns on me that a key balancing decision, which would make sense, is if she was to attempt to rewind right after picking the flag up the act of rewinding would cause her to put the flag back where she picked it up from. On top of this using the rewind while doing a flag run would have the drawback of undoing the progress she made running back to her base.

The one genuinely broken thing I can think of is Zenyatta's ultimate. They would have to make it so that going transcendent causes him to drop the flag.

The problem is each character doesn't vary enough in speed to make it interesting. Most of the roster is the same speed, I think.

Or just disable ults if you have the flag and you can't drop the flag.

I got almost the same results by just changing the contrast and then the background colour.

I don't think so. Some characters are just horribly slow. Roadhog and Reaper would be thrown out of the mix, and the maps would have to be much larger and with more obstacles to accommodate the mode. I could see it working on its own maps and with only certain characters being allowed to be played.

Reapers close range damage and Roadhog's hook would make them useful as interceptors. A crafty Reaper could also find use in using his teleport when flagrunning.

You need to keep in mind that rewind wouldn't be as useful for her in a ctf game, and her mobility is actually dependant on her piling up her blinks. Othewise she's only got 150 health making her easy picking for interceptors, and even if she attempts a triple-blink that wouldn't be enough to escape an enemy who is already blocking her path.

Genji is not the only hero in the game who can easily travel on rooftops. And depending on the map design he could potentially make himself a target for widowmakers by doing so.

She would be far more useful as an intercepting hero.

I would much rather prefer Domination type mode like in CoD. That way you would have to actually strategize.

what? everyone can still use abilities just not when carrying the flag. how does that make it "not overwatch"? it would simply make it a team effort to escort the flag carrier back to base how is that "not overwatch". please, a CTF mode would fit right into this game if they just made it so the FC couldn't use impactful mobility abilities.

Because it feels weird. Players, especially new ones would look at CTF and think "carry the flag, uh? guess I gotta pick a fast hero" and then find out the worst way their abilities don't work in that situation.

Pharah still has the Jetpack, even without the boost and Lucio\Genji\Tracer actually have an higher base movespeed anyway.
Lucio in particular would have to have it change automatically to Healing or he would be uncatchable. And unable to use Ampit Up for that reason, but that means no healing either.

It would just be this incredibly ridiculous gamemode where you pick the toughest heroes to carry the flag, not the ones with better mobility, which makes no sense.

What would work was a reverse CTF or bombing run.
A central object that each team has to carry to the other's base, like a ball.
That way, you can be fast but you're still gonna have to pass by the oposing team and if you blink, you'll be alone on their side.
Not to mention, the fighting is all centered on that object, like other gamemodes and you can even balance things by simply reducing the speed of whoever is carrying it.

Faster but more fragile heroes can easily be caught by the other team, Tanks will be tougher carriers but even slower to reach the goal.

that's not really true. i mean, yeah, you'll be in a worse situation once you get the flag but it'll still be much easier to take the flag with a fast hero because you get there faster and you're harder to hit. and it's not like the flag auto despawns if you drop it. a fast character doesn't need to cap it, they can carry it closer to the fat character and pass them the flag. you'd have to put a cooldown on passing and extend the ability limitation to another 2 seconds after the pass to prevent exploitation of the mechanic tho.

also, if the fact that pharah still has a jetpack but can't use it bothers you then just make it so the players don't carry flag but instead carry some heavy object. i mean come on, why even throw that out there. your game mode idea sounds pretty interesting but by letting characters like tracer keep using their abilities it would be just as impractical. distract the team a bit and she'll just dash past them three times without the other team even realizing she's already near their goal. also, it would make tracer inherently OP for the game mode, making her an obligatory pick.

I've had some ideas for More Mobilitywatch:

CTF still has the inherent problem that there's 2 points of conflict at any one time, both flags.
Your time has to split up in both Offense and Defense to care about each and team composition here is even more of a factor than normal. Take 4 Offense and 2 Defense to rush them, or play it safe with a flanker and healer on Offense and 4 Defense?
Defense takes only Builder roles or do they get a high-mobility hero to catch anyone getting the Flag?

It would make for an interesting group but with only 6 people per match, that would be too hard for the kind of casual game Overwatch is trying to be.

I admit that was indeed a flaw in my idea. I was considering a Tolbjorne on defense with a turret to shove some hot rivets up her cunt, but that's just "mandatory Torbs".

Bombing Run offset mobility for defenders by giving them Translocators (it did the same for actual CTF too) dunno what would be the equivalent for Overwatch.

CTF tends to work far better in games when the encouraged mentality isn't, "some attack, some defend" but rather "let's all try and gain a presence in the main field so then we're in a position to both help anyone on our team who managed to nab their flag while intercepting anyone on their team that nabbed ours".

The idea that anyone staying behind is able to reliably stop the enemy from stealing the flag is actually the worst case scenario because that leads to the sort of shit like in tf2 which just makes things a tedious stalemate.

Big problem with zen/lucio IMO besides no big heals is that their ults do basically the same thing and 9 times out of 10 both players will pop their ult at the same time in reaction

I'm thinking Ana is a pretty good substitute for Zen on offense where her ult's ability to spearhead a push is more useful than having double the staying power.

I've actually managed to kill a player receiving Zenyatta's ult as McCree just because my team all concentrated fire on the same guys. We didn't have an Ana to block healing or anything.

Toss up between Junkrat and Lucio. Seeing and hearing the words TRIGGERED is fucking orgasmic, especially if you've placed a concussion mine right next to the steel trap. And his animations for using the grenade launcher are a joy to watch.

Lucio meanwhile has immense utility as a mobile healer, one of the best ults in the game to deny an offensive ult. Plus slipping and sliding everywhere to not get hit by wall riding and jumping around is fun as fuck even if it usually leads to you getting killed, it can help contest a point for the vital few more seconds. Also I find his weapon somewhat useful for area denial, that is to say it can lay down some surpressing fire because people won't walk into your fire but its slow enough that the enemy can see the projectiles coming and will avoid you if you're far away enough.

I HATE playing lucio. Basically your job is to be vaguely near your team and not die. Since Lucio is fucking impossible to hit even on the ground and heals away any damage immediately he can be played effectively by a brain damaged BR.

I still main supports, but when the team needs me to play Lucio I just die a little inside.

If you get get a group going trying doing 2 Lucio 4 Soldier 76 or 3 and 3. If you get the timing right you can take the first point and then rush to the second point before the enemy team can respawn

Yep thats why I enjoy pissing off the enemy team. But I like playing Lucio like this instead of resenting it, getting to catch fleeing enemies is fun too, they always underestimate the power of the sonic blast. Also the speed boost can make all the difference in sudden death.

This game is all about limiting the amount of tilt a single player can have because of skill.

Zenyatta is fun, love deleting people with alt fire, headshots that put most DPS heroes to shame, and the whole enlightened monk thing he has for his personality is pretty cool too.

Mercy though will always be my favorite even as she gets nerfed or out-buffed to uselessness. Not a fan of the whole "hide and res" concept though. It can be awesome when you read the enemy right and get out just in time for them to come in with their team-wiping ults, but I mainly like her for being an "active" healer, flying in and out of the fray to heal people up and deny the enemy their kills.

Game's don't become popular thanks to memes. The memes are what happens because the game got popular.

The whole thing boils down to gameplay. If no one wants to actually play the game then the memes won't form, and the cuties would be doomed to obscurity. TF2's downfall is that its developers are morons and the gameplay has suffered from it immensely.

This essentially. After a few years, Valve decided to treat TF2 as a labrat for testing out features they had in mind (such as trading) shortly after it became F2P, as well as continuously adding more and more items and hats (and over time they just kept adding more cosmetic items instead of weapons, and every time they did add new weapons, it kept fucking up the balance of the game, resulting in weapons both new and old getting constant changes in buffs and nerfs) to try and keep the game popular.

The end result? Most of the players that have been with the game since it's early days have either left the game entirely, or are continuing to suffer by still playing it with the new playerbase that has taken over the game. Sure you may find some servers that have good legit players that have been around for years, or have gone to TF2C that I see a thread about every now and then here, but with how the game itself has changed due to the updates over the years, it still doesn't feel the same as it used to. Add that to what valve has been doing over the years, many people have lost the will to play it.

What I hope, but don't expect from this game, is that Blizzard learns from Valve's mistakes and keep unlockables purely cosmetic and/or non-balance altering, keep the game balanced balanced as possible when adding new characters, and keep adding new modes for people interested in trying out new modes. But again I'm not expecting this to happen knowing how Blizzard is.

Blizzard is esports focused to an insane degree. "Knowing how Blizzard is" I would say that they are about the one AAA company you can trust not to do that, since gameplay unlocks get in the way of the level playing field esports requires.

No new maps, quick content crawl, and the little issues the game has with servers and gameplay theme/balance are all adding up to make me sick of the game.

It's been what, 3 months? We've already got a new character, a slew of balance changes completely shaking the meta, and were probably due for the next new reveal (on PTR) when comp ends in a few weeks. That's to say nothing of the summer games shit with new skins and gameplay modes, which I'm expecting to have a new lucioball-tier game every week for the next 3 weeks.

You come to hate all the maps, but it's not really blizzards fault IMO. Same thing happens in pretty much any game unless there are so many maps you can't remember them all.

Basically, you remember the bad. The more you play on a single map the more the bad memories build up, so the more you HATE that map. Very rare is the map that gives you so many good plays you love it, and even then the people you play against probably hate it for the same reason.

Also, the new maps will automatically be broken, imbalanced, bullshit messes. Not because they are bad maps, but because they are new. Happens every time. Again it's a combination of remembering the negative and the fact that nobody knows how to play the new maps so every experience turns bad.

Lijiang Tower is pretty OK overall, Numbani seems to be pretty good as well, if anything I am already feeling the need for more varied levels.

I liked Lijiang for a while, now it and Numbani are my most hated. You'll probably come to hate it too in a hundred more hours or so.

"More varied" I don't know, but I know that you will invariably be complaining that the new maps are horrible, unbalanced shit even if they meet your criteria for being "more varied"

I played NS2. The game had I think 6 maps when I started, added 5 or 6 more over the course of 3 years. It's not much but we're talking basically a step above indie so maps take a long time in development. Anyway inevitably every single map was met with complaints of being the worst most unbalanced map ever, until two maps down the line when people were used to it enough they considered it one of the core maps and conveniently forget about how shitty they thought it was. No thanks to balance changes made to the maps after release, no one like those either.

Anyway looking back when I was asked which map was my favorite I realized that the only maps I could say I liked were the ones that were underplayed specifically because they were underplayed.

I think the game needs some more open levels right now, Route 66 is a good example, at least during the first segment of the payload escort.

Anubis and Illios are the most painful maps to play if your team is shit. I start to expect the worst when I see them loading.

They exchange one or two lines when paired up, and that's it.

I can't say much since I've just started the game, but open maps can be hit or miss, and also depend on how many snipers (or Pharas) are playing.

The thing is, the ones I mentioned also have rooms and lots of places to hide and take cover.

If you're referring to the heroes under the "defense" section at character select, maybe. As for the best heroes to defend with, it's sure as shit nothing in that category.

The novelty wears off quick because the game itself is not actually all that great, despite its beautiful layers of polish. You can play things like Quake for hours without really caring what the map is, but with the simple MOBA style hard counter system Overwatch has, you need to be ready to provide more hooks for the player.

I think new maps are more important than new characters, especially since the game has so little in both number and variety. I feel like I've been playing the same game since launch since there are only 2 gamemodes and 3 settings in which the maps take place.

Considering the parallels I was drawing with NS2 your pretty much dead wrong on that "because depth" shit. With quake it's probably more competitive nature if not just simple nostalgia, plus the game had something like 40+ maps to begin with. When your doing competition it doesn't really matter that the field is exactly the same and completely uninteresting, see: all real sports.

Overwatch also has 4 modes with 3 maps each, technically 9 maps for king of the hill. You might not count the hybrid payload/points as seperate modes but you still have to count the maps.

I wouldn't consider the hybrids gamemodes, and I group the 3 map variations into one map in my head, but my main issue is with the number of settings the maps have. Where are the glaciers, the jungles, the ravines, the space stations? I understand that not all of these can fit into the (current) gamemodes, but right now it's always either a city or a wasteland. The cities themselves do differ quite a decent amount, but it feels like they took very little creative risks with their maps, with the exception of few like Route 66 or the temple section of Nepal.

It's not like the maps are necessarily bad or bland, it's just that with the artists working on Overwatch I'd like to see them utilize more unique settings.

Unless you meant cut content most of those unused rooms are flanking routes.

Yes, but I they are hardly ever used, let's say King's Row had a 4-5 capture point mode or the like, all that space would be used a lot more.

The only time I don't see most of those rooms are when the attacking team is stomped and doesn't even manage to capture the first point.

Also the flanking routes themselves don't have enough alternative routes to them like the main path do. I'd rather have dedicated 5CP maps or expanded KOTH maps converted to 5CP than recycling maps poorly suited to 5CP.

yeah maps are the life blood of games like this. new classes are alright, but hardly as important when we dont really have any holes in the roster. especially when some of those characters could still use some tweaking to make them worth a fuck
