I'm making an RPG with giant fucking robots, but I've hit a dead-end in design ideas as I don't have a single drawfag fibre in my body. I want you fine niggers to post the most badass and unique mech and robo designs you can get your hands on so that I might get some inspiration.
FUCKING COOL ROBOTS IN VIDJA THREAD
Jacob White
theres no point making a game if you're not going to be original about it
Noah Collins
apologies for bluntness
Jaxon Gray
I'm not asking for ideas to plagiarize, I'm looking for inspiration for new ideas.
Julian Bennett
Then look for inspiration where designers of robots both fictional and real often turn to, the fauna. All designs proven effective by countless millenia of evolution.
Jack Martinez
disgraceful
Alexander Bell
so what if its not original, the idea sounds good enough
Jose Butler
How about treadmills on the feet with belt fed machine gun ballerina mecha tutu?

did you say clang?

OP said in vidya, you autistic fucking retard
Ian Hill

Dylan Cooper
Hey Keyboardpeon, what are you doing here?
Chase Campbell
It's a basically a Dogū but Phobos/Huitzil is probably my favorite vidya robot.
Platinum Games also has some pretty neat robot designs in Vanquish, Max Anarchy and MGR (though the later two is mostly cyborgs). While not robots, Kazuma Kaneko's art could be a good source of inspiration given his designs tend to have a very non-organic appearance.

Armored Core has always had cool mechas, especially if Shoji Kawamori is designing them.
Noah Thomas
Battletech universe has best mechas.
Jack Gomez
Do you ever think From will make another AC? Granted, it's only been a few years since the last one, but it didn't really seem as if anybody liked AC5 or AC:VD.
Jacob Cook
Yeah, but those human shaped ones are just silly. Madcat style ones are awesome, but Black Knight and ones like that look like knockoff Transformers.
Aiden Taylor
Battletech has shit designs.
Anthony Murphy
It has "all mechs are retardedly designed but if we stretch out the laws of physics, how would a workable mech look" design.
Aaron Anderson
GTFO
Liam Gonzalez
Are you blind or retarded?
Battletech's designs aren't even good enough to be called generic, they are like piles of cardboard boxes spray-painted metallic colors. Even knockoff Macross designs couldn't save it.
Jaxson Hill
if i can recommend something in an rpg way, it is to have multiple customizable parts. if you want to make a more ranged character for instance, allow the player to make choices and create a mech they want to make.
Grayson Miller
Maybe. I think they'll probably make a new series first, and it will inevitably be Souls' inspired in setting or theme because it would sell more. Think Frame Gride I guess. AC4 got mixed receptions and while ACV was poorly regarded by most I think there's still a fanbase to recover if they went a little bit more classic on the next installment. Hopefully not too classic though, I don't want to return to the era of 'grind losses for an hour to get Human Plus because it's the most fun way to play the game' and 'several stats are useless and do literally nothing' although I hear FS is taking the latter into account with DS3.
Wyatt Cox
That's not how it works though. The masters of mecha design are all Japanese giga-autists who eat, sleep, and breath mechanical design. They didn't draw inspiration from "badass and unique mechs and robos" because they fucking invented them. They grew up without that shit and drew inspiration from scif-fi anime, manga, western pulp sci-fi, other written fiction, actual robots, human and animal skeletons, insects, cars, planes, spacecraft, military vehicles, idk what the fuck else… particularly futuristic Japanese washing machines from the 70s? Who knows.
To go off on a bit of tangent, you're just another example of everything wrong with modern game design: people who grew up on video games and use them as their whole pool of knowledge and inspiration. That and they think they absorbed the finer points of game design subconsciously over years of pushing buttons at mindless and disposable bleep bloop games in the wee hours of the night. That's why everything is mediocre and derivative anymore. It's all characters, features, mechanics, music, designs borrowed from better games and then blended into one soupy, brownish-gray slurry for your consumption. You ever hear a bit of music and think: "that sounds like a boss fight" or "that could be the BGM for an ice level"? That's that shit. Legendary classic hit Game X was inspired by an Irish folk tale, 80's British punk rock, an 18th century Polish surrealist painter, the Ottoman capture of Buttfuckistan in 1120, and M*A*S*H. Shovelware indie Game Y was inspired by Game X. That's hyperbole, but look into it yourself, what was behind the creation of some of the most iconic games out there. Sure, the big names in gaming were "inspired" by some game or another, but it often doesn't go much further than "(translated) I first saw Pong on a PC in 1975 and knew I had to spend the rest of my life making videogames." (goes on to make Castlevania: Symphony of the Night or some such).
If you need to have a bunch of other mechs in front of you to design mechs, I hate to say it OP, but you ain't making a successful mech game. Your first pic is sick though. It's like the Personas guy does mecha.
Colton Long
Labrys is pretty cool and cute.

How the fuck is she cool she's just a chick with red wristbands and some random metal pieces around her

I really love the overblown Five Star Stories designs. In universe, every Mortar Headd is considered a work of art, so they're made as fancy as possible.
Masamune Shirow does some pretty cool "practical" robots. Lots of rounded shapes and little touchs like manipulator arms.
I also like the real robots made by Banpresto.

Some obscure ones I liked were in Battleclash for SNES, and some of the bots in Virtual On. Either Oratario Moon base for Saturn or Tangram for Dreamcast.
They weren't awesome, but they are certainly something outside of the classic mech box. Might give you inspiration.
Luke Price
MS Saga Custom Robo series RAD
Samuel Butler
Also, while your art is nice, I'm noticing some problems. In the second image that gun makes no sense and neither does the "anatomy" of the robot. Now, if you say "it bends behind the arm" for the left side, then why doesn't it look different from the right side?
Michael Peterson
still the best mech designs and the best mech game ever.
Landon Morales
sorry for long post good luck on the game op
Xavier Wood
But dreadnoughts arent robots, they are almost dead space marines inside a mechanised suit.
Mason Adams
You put some weird abstract feeling I've been having for months into words, thanks so much user, you probably made a huge difference in my future work.
It's just like JoJo's. Certainly Hirohiko took inspiration from other mangas like fist of the north star, but he took music, movies, fashion, and tons of other themes to create something wholly unique and well beloved. While something like skullgirls kinda just took bits and pieces from other fighting games and kinda fell flat after people looked past the tits and ass.
Nolan Evans
Thanks. I wasn't trying to go off on OP in particular, since it's probably just a thinly-veiled "post cool images" thread anyway. A whole lot of projection in there too since I'm working on a game and it's turning into far more research and design than I had ever imagined, not even to make something completely original, but just acceptably good.
Glad I could help. It's the first time I had attempted to put it into words myself but that's basically the core of my "everything that's wrong with games anymore" theory I have. That, and consumers' insatiable appetite for electronic entertainment that's keeping lazy devs alive, plus the whole leftist/millennial, I don't even know what you'd call it, "irony"? Basically, excusing themselves from really trying. "So the game is called 'Hero vs the Big Bad' because after all, isn't that basically what all the good games are? Players don't actually care about the characters or the story, they just want blah blah… The player character is a single-color pixel graphic of a stick figure with a sword and shield that's recognizable and iconic and blah blah… Our game is a deconstruction of the RPG genre, self-aware and introspective blah blah blah…" Shut up faggot, you just didn't want to come up with an actual game design because you don't have a creative bone in your body and a poor work ethic. Anyway, it's just hard. It was always hard, except people actually tried a decade or two ago. I guess big companies pay people to research and brainstorm design, fly to locations to shoot photos for concept art, hire historians for historical accuracy, that sort of thing. As a solo dev, it's a lot of work but there's no getting around it unless you're making a "le quirky pixel man shoots blocks with music and stuff" mobile game.

Indeed, Battletech started out by getting the rights to use the early generations of the Robotech and Dougram Fang of the Sun mechs. This was back before everything in anime turned into the same generic dude in samurai armor looking gundam ripoffs. And yes, there's a lot of silly looking mechs in battletech too. There's 7000+ different designs, so there's bound to be some potatoes in there. A lot of them are also over 20 years old. But there's also a lot of awesome classics.
Nathaniel Price
...
Ian Hughes
Sorry user, thought this thread was dead. Anyway, the general battle system works like this:
(Not sure if I should stick to squares or hexes right now. Experimenting with both.) (Enemy positioning will vary, and you'll be able to customize which characters start further forward/back) (Smooth animation of character running and attacking will play after selecting targets and path) (Back attacks do more damage, high angle attacks give higher accuracy etc.) (The enemy can take advantage of this too, so you need to be careful not to leave yourself exposed) (The enemy has a chain gauge too)
Combat can be done either on-foot or in your mech (Knight), but you can only fight indoors/in caves on foot. The "Knights" will not be the end-all OP weapons though, as you need to pay for repairs, fuel and ammo, and the better your equipment, the more expensive it is to repair.
Don't be fooled by the pics I posted; the game will be fully 3D, but you can go into a top-down view during battle if you want to. Knights and large enemies will take up multiple grid spaces at once.
Hunter Turner
Whoops. Meant AP instead of MP, but you get the deal

You mean the cannonfodder machines that every single show spend most of their run time to show how they get mowed down by the hundreds by angsty little cunts in their supermegaawesome gundams that somehow all look basically the same despite them all being unique prototypes because everyone knows prototypes are always better than massproduced machines.

I'm poking shit, they do look cool
One thing to always remember with mechs is that they don't have to be just scaled up humans, play around with proportions and shapes for good results.
Bentley Baker
When people in this thread say "they don't have to be human shaped" all I think of is "dinosaurs". I'm probably a fucking child if that's the first thing I jump to when I hear robots that aren't shaped like square people.
Jacob Watson
Whats wrong with you /m/aggots
John Long
And it's sequel, ARMORED WARRIORS
Best arcade I've played. Some bossfights even have players go full Megazord power ranger style and have their robots combine into a giant one for a while.
Jonathan Richardson
Armored Warriors is a prequel
Daniel Diaz
Is it? I've always been told it's a spin-off sequel. Doesn't really matter for me, it's fucking amazing.
Josiah Cooper
The fighting game is the spin off sequel.
Kevin Hill
'Nother cool robit game. I'm loving the fuck out of it and the music.

Micro Change is pretty good since soft of their stuff transforms into mostly accurate 1:1 things. The robots are a bit brick-like, but no one can say they hate Soundwave and all his little cassette buddies.
Microchange Battlebike as Autoscout when e-Hobby? You gave Stripes a toy and he was only in the movie script!

Holy shit, what's that one that looks like a heavily advanced Ray 01?

Square cube law states that the bigger the mech, the dumber it is.

No, it's not cool. It needs more wing-like appendages, i think.
Alexander Perry
Space-magic says you can go suck a dick.

Mech games aren't exactly known for their realistic depictions of reality.
Brandon Watson
I have a further theory: the bigger the mech, the dumber its fans.
Thomas Cox
But Eva's mechs aren't that big, therefor I'd say your theory is incorrect.
Dylan Hill
I'm pretty sure EVA's are some of the biggest non supers.
Anyone have that size chart?

Owen Howard
Just because it's not realrobo doesn't mean it's super.
You've clearly never actually watched any super stuff if you think EVA counts.
Ethan Peterson
Now you're just moving the goalposts. But personally, I never liked giant realrobots. Anything taller than 20 metres gets to ridiculous for me. That doesn't mean I act like a zealot and talk down to people who do enjoy it.
Jose Wright
The best mechs are the dumb ones though.
>existing
Gabriel Sanders
EVA's ain't got shit to do with how anything in the real world works. They are literally running on fairy dust and are being controlled by "The chosen one" and the pilots angst gives the machine super powers.. Its much like Gurren Lagann, just because it superficially pretends to be about realrobo's, don't mean it isn't about hot blood and machines that run on fairydust.
Isaiah Butler
nah man mecha dinosaurs are really cool.
only ever seen one in transformers though.
Lucas Wood
FUCK DINOSAURS cyborg/mecha dinosaurs are pretty cool.

This is now a droid thread.
Liam Sanchez
For some reason normalfags don't like dinosaurs or robots. It's a damn shame that the only Getter game that isn't a crossover is a TRPG.
Clone Wars game with Commando Droids when? Republic Commando II when?
Caleb Carter
You know what? I'm going to learn Lucidic dreaming for this.
Nathaniel Lewis
Everything that isn't a hot girl needs more wing-like appendages.
Joshua Peterson
But he's right you stupid fuck
Jaxson Russell
Do they ever explain how droids are sentient in Star Wars? I know it's absolutely possible to make a machine self-aware and for it to have emotions, but it would be an incredible feat of programming to actually do it. Was the code manually written or did they develop something that would automatically fill in the blanks? Who am I kidding, why would they explain the actually interesting topics when they could say what polish Darth Vader uses for his helmet?
Chase Murphy
m8 at this stage all they'd do is turn it into some faggy human rights issue
Brody Martin
In fiction? Sure.
Programming can't create emotions. Programming can create self-awareness of, say, the level of a clock (or a rock). Unless we're going to have something possess the machinery, it won't be self-aware. It can imitate awareness, and it can imitate emotional responses. It won't have any emotions. A camera can react to light; it still doesn't see it.
However, there are multiple plausible explanations for such Quess we could use the double slit experiment as the ultimate Litmus test.
John Johnson
Guess*
Brandon Davis
The world of Star Wars seems to be immune to such, with Clone armies, child soldiers and sentient Droids being used to wage galactic wars.
Adrian Baker
Not him, but couldn't you technically create a conscious machine? I mean, humans are just really complex organic machines. Our DNA is basically our programming.
Easton Hughes
A lot of computer scientists have had rather in-depth debates on this topic, and even they're not entirely sure what the answer is. Could you make a machine sentient? Maybe? Could you do it with how our machines work? Maybe not? Nobody's really sure, sentience is an extremely wishy-washy subject (the term itself is rarely used in actual studies about it). We're not sure how or why it works within ourselves, let alone how to recreate it.
Ian Miller
Consciousness is an anomaly as of now. The way it interacts with the world seems to be identical to how a player affects a virtual world. Even if you had all the data of the models they use, the patterns they move through… You couldn't find the player within.
Why does Schrödinger's cat wait for a conscious opener?
Joseph Barnes
We essentially run on complex (and that's an extreme understatement) programming, but we have emotions. I don't want to get into an argument about this and derail the thread, so just post droids.
John Hall
Did you mean sapient?
Brandon Adams
Actually I think the correct term is "conscious", but saying "sentient" ensures more people know what I'm actually talking about. But that doesn't matter, this is a robot thread, not a philosophical thread.
Julian Williams
Ciircuit, is that you?
Parker Lewis
But user… The point you are raising IS a philosophical one. How do we determine what IS sentient. How do we even define what conciousness is? Cat can be highly self concious when it stumbles, and then just stays lying on the ground trying to make it look like it meant to lie down in that spot. But a cat isn't sentient like a human by any stretch.
Jacob Nelson
Maybe. It was the filename, right?
Robert Mitchell
It was partially because you always use the same 50~ reaction images, including that one. Have you ever drawn cool robots before, actually? It'd fit pretty well with the thread. I'm not talking about lewd stuff
Brody Sanders
Why is Metabee is so goddamn adorable?

I will legitimately never understand this but it is 100% true. Try bringing up anything related to mecha or robots with normal fags. Just try, and watch the results.
Jordan Stewart
I really don't get it. I've got a friend who's really into mechanics, engineering, jets, planes, cars, tanks, boats, you name it. But mention mechs or even mech-suits and he just switches off.
Blake Peterson
Sahelanthropus was just such a fucking disappointment
Julian Bailey

MGS5 was a disappointment in general. It certainly had cool robots, though.
