What made KI:U's localization of changing personalities and revamping the script okay and the changing of personalities and revamping the script in the localization of Fates not okay?

One is a rare instance of the localization making something bland interesting while the other is taking something that was already shit and making it worse.

This, and Sakurai giving them free license to change whatever they wanted.
Have you ever heard anyone complain about Samurai Pizza Cats?

Kid Icarus Uprising didn't have cut content, was already a comedy script (and isn't as changed as people make it out to be, it's mostly puns and shit), and has good writing and voice acting.

because Sakurai gave NoA their okay and liked the popular America version as the boring Japanese version.

seriously, you really want to say the original is better when Hades was a generic and edgy anime villain in it?

even viridi being a asshole in the american script is better

Why did they have to make Thanatos a flaming faggot?

I only hate localization when it's used to push social agendas, specifically to censor shit that doesn't need to be and claim that the censored material is something that the localizer claims is not fit for America.
Basically, these social warriors get a position where they have the chance to decide what is right for the country.

I hate shitty writers and memes too. But that's pretty much a big problem in the entire world of western entertainment. Not just western localizers.

But I liked Thanatos.

Because Kid Icarus is a shitty game nobody cared about. Unlike FE Fates, which is a shitty game some people cared about.

Plus like other people mentioned Sakurai let NOA do whatever the fuck it wanted with the game and it came out better for it. Death of the author, kinda, at which point the localization is every bit as valid as the original Jap version.

Nintendo had a professional writer (who works for the Onion Irrc) rewrite the jokes for Ki: Uprising.

They hired an professional SJW to oversee the one for Fates.

The difference is writing talent.

As for intent, I would prefer the original preserved as the setting calls for it. Medieval setting should reflect medieval, Japanese setting reflect Japan, etc.

I dont think theres such a thing as valid. Then again I dislike postmodern forms of thought that result in vapid superlatives.

Localisation is always a gamble and just like gambling, most of the time you lose and never come out ahead.

You cannot not learn Japanese

You're damn right I'm not not learning Japanese, fuccboi.

so where is the straight shota porn?

Well what did they change did they change the tone completely? Or did they just change puns and stuff so they make sense in english?

Pit and Palutena fucking anyone other than each other is blasphemy.

This is fact.

What about Pit fucking Dark Pit?

As a fucking retard, I have to wonder how some things.

Take Paper Mario, how much of TTYD is the original Jap script and how much is it changed by Treehouse? Are the Jap games more boring or what?

Or Dragon Quest, where one of the guys on that project decided "yes, I want funny accents in all the localizations" after 8, even though most of the games aren't voiced where that would work better. Are we ruining his "vision" when we demand that the fucking script be readable? Or does he just hate western fans for not buying the games? Because I think that's a fair trade if that's the case.

Don't know who's decision it was but it was purely fucking retarded regardless

I know. Even MGR got it right when they gave that one kid subtitles that translated his slang.

One was a game with boring dialogue (in which the dialogue wasn't too important) given to a good writer with the director's approval, and the changes resulted in a better game.

The other was a game with (ostensibly) a focus on writing/plot given to some retards/SJWs that are shit at writing, did so without the director's approval, and the changes made the dialogue either cut from the game entirely or complete shit.

The one time in my life I ever paid money dollars for manga was the first volume of Hellsing. It was literally unreadable.

I keep it around as a reminder to never ever not ever give one single dirty penny to Western "publishers".

Both are shit. I didn't know about it before I got the game. Fuck them. Hope the NX will fail or pirated soon but I will wait for the upgraded model with tegra 2 the first one will come with tegra 1 they need some kind of scam to let users upgrade later.

Well, it depends on the subject matter. Kid Icarus: Uprising was a case where in the localization they made a straightfaced, somewhat dull game into a game with more personality while with Fates, they took some decent personalities with a shitty script and not only dumbed them down, but somehow made the script even worse.

Localization is something that needs care put into it and while NoA was on the ball with Kid Icarus, the same cannot be said about Fates.

yep, if it's not accents, it's memes, if I remember correctly one of the official western translations of Berserk has a fucking Army of Darkness reference shoehorned into the scene where Guts gets his mechanical hand, scanlations are the only way user, its good you have a physical reminder of that

I forgot about that, but yah, you're completely right, the kid spouted Hue slang gibberish but with Subtitles on it gave a king's english translation of what the fuck he was saying

One is a light-hearted action game and the other is supposed to be a deep character-driven story heavy RPG where tactical battles have lasting consequences or should unless you play on casual mode.

You tell me which one is more affected by changes in translation.

Stop already. It's just fucking annoying.

What if it's ruby character over normally written text?

That is fucking godawful, holy shit.

Objectively correct. /thread

the localization for the final boss in splatoon is generally liked as well.
heres the difference, fire emblem attracts weebs.

What if at least one of them were a cuntboy

It was Jamaican weed babblings, you ignorant fuck. But still, it was good that they did that because I was having flashbacks to fucking Jacob from GTA IV and they barely even tried to give a translation to whatever the fuck he was saying. I ended up figuring out that retarded Jamaican weed musings.

my erection would be extremely painful

Reminder NoA was never good

you too

It didn't make it okay and I refuse to be associated with anything Nintendo.

Actually NoA does a very good job. Americans just have shit taste.

NoA saved the N64, kept the GC from completely imploding and made the Wii into a hype.

But somehow they failed to save the Wii U from imploding! :^)
NoA is shit through and through

Ain't that masturbation

No they're not.

NoA did not make the wiiU. The job of NoA is to market the shit Nintendo gives them. They have a good track record doing this.

But that's wrong you fucking heretic.
exhentai.org/g/549933/abf3c96835/

I'm sure they do.

...

People will say that they made Uprising's script better by translating it the way they did, but the people who defend Fates honestly believe the translation for that was an improvement. You can argue that it doesn't affect the gameplay in Uprising, but in that case why change it at all? Sakurai may have agreed to the changes, but it's already been demonstrated that all the localizers have to do is pull some shit about muh cultural differences and they can get anything they want changed with the creator's blessing.

Except that the Fates Localisation is basically making everyone a child

Wii U's marketing was terrible, though. Most casuals still think it's a Wii attachment.

And some people liked it because of that. I'm sure it would be very popular with the weird older women who post pictures of the minions from Despicable Me on Facebook all the time.

That's not what "Death of the author" means.

This.

Comedic works generally need tweaking when translated because there's a slew of jokes, typically puns, that only make sense for a certain culture.

KI:U uses localization to its advantage, which is why many people are fine with it. The other instances of people getting upset are due to localizations censoring things that the team was bothered by (with no regard to the userbase that wanted to have these things), or other annoying shit like adding jokes and memes where there weren't any before.

Holy shit it's always older women. I have like four different aunts who do this shit.

As far as I'm aware the tone is generally "wackier" in the US version, more akin to a saturday morning cartoon. It's a bit different from the original, but from what I can tell the original was still light-hearted enough that this transition naturally worked out. It's not like Xenoblade X or Fates where serious characters were turned into walking caricatures at all times.

kys

Yeah this drove me insane.

In Dragon Quest 8 I thought it was really nice because the game was voice-acted and it lent a sort of charm to the game. But in shit like 9 all it does is make everything unnecessarily hard to read. There's a time and place for this sort of thing.

Would you feel better if I told you I deleted it ages ago

Cor blimey!

Because it didn't happen with Kid Icarus and until you post proof nobody should believe your claims

it'll be okay if you post nudes

sorry I'll have to kill myself then

f

Oh I fucking DESPISE Nintendo.

They made gaming into casual shit and I still rage when I think about motion controls.

But they know how to make money.

i see that statement flung around all the time but never anything to back it up

Wouldn't that be masturbation?
And not fucking.

I'm a boy

no?

The thing with accents is that if they're used, they should be done if the original Japanese release had regional accents (in order to create a similar effect with English; ToV's Yeager for example throws some Engrish around in the Japanese version, which is substituted with German in the English version), or, on the rare chance the game's set in the real world, a character that would naturally speak English with an accent can have extra immersion (Shadow Hearts: FtNW's Ricardo, a guitar strumming mariachi who speaks American English with a Spanish flair). The thing though, which some companies like Square seem to forget, is that accents should only be used when the game is voiced, while leaving the text itself fully legible in English (as both the above games do if memory serves). None of that Dragon Quest IV DS style shit, which is both a waste of localization resources beyond a standard translation, AND makes the game harder to understand.

funny you should mention samurai pizza cats
the dub was so funny it got back-imported to japan and japanese fansubs of the english version proved more popular than the original show

Samurai Pizza Cats did the gag dub because they had to, the studio didn't send them the script. Modern "gag" translations pull their shit because they think they are funnier than the original writers and they're not.

But it's the same person, that's masturbation isn't it?

incest maybe

are you related to yourself?
Does it work like that?

Gaaaaaaaaaaay

well they dont share a consciousness or a body. its essentially 2 different people

I think text accents could work if they used in Dragon Quest if they used ruby text, which the Dragon Quest games have support for anyways, for it and have the main text be readable.

What is ruby text anyhow?

Kana written above the kanji to serve as a pronunciation guide or often, to spell out different concepts altogether. For example, I've seen a doujin where the wrote the kanji for woman, but put 'prey' in ruby above it, and wrote the kanji for man, but put 'predator' above it in ruby.

No, you're a patrician.
