Invisible war was shamefully scathing and unrelatable (kinda goes without saying that it was a shitty sequel tbh), human revolution was more focused on flashy action sequences than the story (even though the end-game sucked dick through a straw and the whole experience didn't even feel much like deus ex) and this new one just looks like it's trying way too hard to be edgy and original, even though the entire plot was basically revealed in the trailer, and the main villain is essentially a cyberpunk edition of the stereotypical eye patch wearing villain, complete with russian accent.

Deus Ex was all about the examination of issues like privacy in an age of surveillance and also human rights. And while it comprehensively breaks down the different sides, it comes down hard for liberal democracy and the rights of individuals. If you look at how Area 51 is structured, and the narrative leading to it, everything screams pick Dark Age. It's the only ending that makes sense in light of what Denton and co argue for during the game. One of the endings is a copout JESUS CHRIST DENTON and the other just doesn't make sense, leaving Dark Age. I have no idea if the other endings were added at the last second or if they were going to add more areas you could visit if you rooted for those world views, like they intended for UNATCO.

In short Deus Ex was going to be a political philosophy textbook with guns but they had to trim every path except defending freedom. Also it's more cyberpunk going that path.

Dumbed down hollywood writing - less intelligent overall, glossing over of scary and unfamiliar themes that won't make the target audience uncomfortable or uppity - and the leftover creative effort put towards establishing emotional tone instead of context. The original Deus Ex didn't have to try to be relatable to the modern world, because it just was. The writers on that game knew what they were doing, and explored the game's themes with enough depth that it was actually interesting instead of shallow set-dressing around a brownanbloom FPS game.

OP, I would respect your thread a lot more if you didn't lump together the original games with Ubisoft's, especially in regard to story/setting/dialog writing. Like:

say, even if the game was somewhat better than the average modern console popamole mechanically, the writing in DXHR was widely acknowledged to be downright embarrassing, and there is no reason to imagine DXMD could improve in that regard, barring staff changes we know didn't happen.

The core shooter combat mechanics were mediocre, sure, but every other mechanic (character building, stealth, resource management, environmental interaction) was tremendous, and the campaign design (paths, secrets, resource balancing, character build balancing, scripting) was excellent. I admit there was a lot of room to improve on (which, sadly, only Troika/Obsidian have with VtMB & Alpha Protocol really have), but the interactive sophistication of DX1 was extremely solid, building substantially on its ancestors UU & SS.

I would also argue that while Deus Ex's story, skillfully written and based around lofty philosophical concepts rather than baser metaphors did elevate the experience, the ingame implementation of the story's main plot thread was shamefully uninteractive, suffering from much the same ME3 problem as DXHE was lambasted for.
