You ever wonder why some shills shill?

You ever wonder why some shills shill?

I rarely use forums at all nowadays but still visit mmochampion now and again just to see what the vidya general threads are talking about. In all the sub sections they still have -for reasons i cannot fathom- an entire sub forum for Rift populated by one person.

This one shill that calls himself a "Brand Ambassador" goes by the name "Slipmat" and he shills Trions Rift so hard you would assume he is on the payroll and he goes nuclear any time the game is criticised in any way.

For the life of me i cannot understand why. The game is dying, its a shit game yet this guy treats it like his life.

What drives some men to shillvalry?

Money.

It's pointless to try to apply reason to it since it's unreasonable. It's just pure spergalicious autism

It's unfortunately not going to get better than these answers, OP

1- He's paid to do it.
2- He's an insecure kid who built an identity centered around a game and now watches as it's crumble down.

I hate Holla Forums sometimes, "shill" is just a buzzword.
What you're actually saying is "I don't like this game, SAGE!"

Just like how Holla Forums silences dissent by using JIDF/leftypol/intl boogeyman buzzwords.

Hey wants people to keep playing. Ever play an MMO by yourself?

Maybe they actually like the game, I loved fallout 4

+1 FO4 is literally the GOTY

If they're getting paid, the answer is simple.
If not, I guess it's a mixture of buyer's remorse, loneliness and the desire to stand up for something since they already spent so much time dedicating their lives to it. Once they're too deep into it, it's hard to admit that what they like is shit.

Heres the thing, everytime we see a bratty, insecure and overly volatile guy online the default is "oh its just a kid" but in my experience 9 times out of 10 its always revealed to be some over 40 asshole thats done the CwC lifestyle and made it to the endgame without suicide and is now a bitter fuck thats angry at a world he feels has slighted him in some fashion.

I would bet dollars to donuts this guy is probably like 45, has a grey ponytail and lives off welfare. Kids today are too effervescent, they call each other faggots and move on. Blood vendettas and going nuclear is reserved for the old guard more often than not.

Brus, I love fallout 4 too and todd is so handsome

Sometimes it is out of pure love for a series. I will shill the Yakuza series any day of the week and I will do it for free because I think the games are fantastic and that more people should play them. There's a good feeling to be had when someone tries something you've recommended and they actually enjoy it.

Other times it might be for the sake of an argument. I am one of few people on this board who enjoyed the new Doom game. I don't exactly go around telling people to go out and buy the game, but I like to talk to people about it due to the polarizing opinions on it. It's also funny to see some people get so worked up over a video game. I'm sure many so called "shills" are just trolls riling people up for the hell of it.

Of course, we can't disregard the people who do actually get paid to promote games on forums and boards. They just want a paycheck, and when it comes to imageboards I think the general strategy is "get people talking about the game, even if it's 100% negative". These guys are likely rare and for every 50 shill accusations, only one of them would be true.

Or he just likes the game and wants to spread the word?

Why is your default thinking: "SHILL!!"

What drives men to create Sonichu, and defend Sonichu's honor to death? What drives men to worship 2000 year old ideas of god, and wear suicide bomb vests to kill the infidels and guarantee themselves a place in heaven? It's all the same autism.

Probably because there are shills on Holla Forums

And we've has shills admit they shilled with screenshots and pics to prove it.

Like that one shill who was shilling EVOLVE and had to stop being people kept making porn of the wraith and the developers didn't want the first thing people see when looking up the game is porn so they stopped.

Yeah yeah but buy fallout 4

TODD PLS.

The worst shill ever was the guy on 4chan Holla Forums a few years back pushing colonial marines as "something to play when alone on valentines day" and he linked to his dating profile.

That was fucking maximum overcringe.

I'm not todd, I'm just one of his many young hot female fans
buy Fallout 4
P-please

I do it for the money.

You've got the sunken falicy cost. Simillar to what breeds fanboys. If the game/console isn't perfect to them, they feel their purchase was wasted. So they justify it by saying it's good. And protecting it protects themselves. Eventually, it becomes second nature to stand by X franchise or company.

The other is just outright payment from another company.

But we are seeing a new one- Shiling purely for politics. Supporting a game because it supports your beliefs, or shilling against it because the thought of that game having the chance of succeeding on it's own merits would be the worst thing ever.

Fuck off, Holla Forums, your paranoid colors are showing again. Not anybody who has a different opinion than the norm is a "shill". The word itself at this point is really meaningless. It's just the same as the word "troll", but a bit more politically leaning.

What makes you think OP is from Holla Forums?
This is an anonymous message board. All that matters is what is posted.

You're fucking retarded

Stop shilling your thread, shill.

because shill has been corrupted to no longer mean 'inside man', it now means someone recommending something for reasons other than the inherent quality of the product, such as wanting people to play with in mp situations or an inability to admit a product is bad

Why do people keep doing this? Are they actually shills?

They market and shill for the lowest common denominator, your average Joe, casuals, the retards that buy yearly CoD and sports rehashes.

Not for the "pure gamers with taste" that make up less than 1%.

Do you really think giant million-dollar companies come to an obscure image board with less than 100 users to shill?

Because in most of these cases the game is shit.
You may not remember when Borderlands was shilled all over the place, but I do. And the game is shit. There's also many other examples.
But then there's cases like Mr. Gimmick. I usually spread the word around that the game exists because it is universally ignored, though lately it has been getting more attention. Mr. Gimmick isn't shit, it's ignored, which is a big difference. It also helps that the game is 20 years old.

...

And lets not forget how often 4chan/Holla Forums ends up in the news.

So in other words, "SHILL" is used by Holla Forums to silence minority opinions.

Why does no one complain about the Overwatch shilling, or Doom shilling? Clearly someone wants us to desperately play these games.

There's selling a game for ad revenue, and then there's selling a game to form popularity. Both sound similar, but have different intentions. Sometimes shills just want the Holla Forums community to play with them.

Why would someone shill on Holla Forums when 4chan exists? They're bigger, more popular, more gullible, and less paranoid. It seems more time efficient to shill there than here.
If your soul was bound to a korean grindan MMO and you wanted to farm gold, would it be more efficient to grind in the dungeon with medium level mobs and higher drop rates, or the dungeon with a few high-level mobs whose drops are worth jack shit?

It would be most efficient to pay some third worlders a few cents an hour to do both.

This.

I've been called a shill when talking about a FREE game.

Why would someone make a mecha game then shit on mechas?

Sometimes there isn't a reason or just pure incompetence.

Do you remember the fucking HuniePop shilling? Or the recent shilling for VA-11 Hall-A?
Shills do exist on Holla Forums, but usually they're niche game shills or former 4/agdg/ anons wanting to shill their memeshit game. There are times where shills for bigger games like Evolve do come here though.

And how do you know they're shills instead of normal players that enjoy the game and want others to enjoy it too?

Because 90% of the time, shill is used incorrectly.

Hi Slipmat

What the fuck is a "Slipmat"?
Google gave me 70's music plates.

Also hi (1) hit'n'runner

There is literally nothing wrong with Huniepop.

I'm going to assume you guys weren't here for seeing firsthand what started GamerGate.
"Shilling", doesn't include just product endorsements, though they mostly can be. It also describes those using methods described here pastebin.com/irj4Fyd5
It's not necessarily large multimillion corporation's higher ups coming personally to shitpost as it is said companies paying a PR/marketing company that hires people in the third world, lower class, neets looking for a job, etc.

If you want to describe shilling as product endorsements, then the game recommendation threads are essentially shill threads. But they're not as they're mostly honest reviews by other anons that want to share a game, and don't have a financial incentive themselves to make the game popular. And they don't fuck up discussion (criticism towards a game, attention to a competiting game).

There's nothing inherently wrong with an user promoting their game here if they're upfront about it. It's nice to support people that deserve it

reddit pls go

...

This is pretty much it. Most of the shills you come across for video games don't really have a dog in the fight, they just want to collect their paycheck.

...

This. Also if you point out the flaws or the blatant misinformation that some people post, you are labeled a shill.

Disgusting place.

...

$0.10 has been deposited into your bank account.

They used Gamergate

It is but i like seeing WoW shit the bed more and watch the fanboys desperately try and spin it into a win.
Like the other day when it came out Mike Morheim was selling all his shares. That was a fun thread to watch.

I can understand if you are upset about the second one.

People who think there is absolutely no shilling are just as retarded as people who accuse someone of shilling anytime a game they don't like is brought up. Has anyone seen how intrusive companies have gotten with ads? Do you really think they wouldn't pay people to pretend to like their shit?

If they are being paid, then yes.

But that doesn't also explain the zealotry surrounding certain games that creates bizarre behavior in normalfags and turns them into frothing lunatics when you insult a game.

Money can get a man to say "hey, my fellow anonymouses! You should buy [TRIPLE A TITLE] because of [BACK OF BOX BULLETPOINT]! It's really [BUZZWORD] and I think it's going to be the most amazing game ever!"

Money will not cause a man to engage in around the clock patrolling of their favorite subreddits, aggressively denouncing any criticisms as unfair or wrong.

Look at Nu Male's Sky and the way that people are hyping the game like some kind of religious experience. Money can't buy that.

Thats a good one.

Yeah those games are almost always mediocre to shit, but the shit I see is:

People just use it as an excuse to not think criticially at all. I much prefer the discussion AFTER a game comes out because then people will actually formulate meaningful criticism or list critical flaws, rather than dumb little shit that doesnt matter.

Christ I bet they were saying shit like "this just gives more people the chance to share in Blizzard's success!"

This is a problem that stems from some people literally just being shitposting memespouters who can only interact on boards like Holla Forums by regurgitating things they've heard before.

Reminds me of that one TORtanic fanboy who said it was a good thing that people stopped playing because that means there is more room for new plays to join.

...

I wonder what kind of reactions they had when Warcraft movie tanked.

True, but it seems like the issue is at its worst with the word "shill" more so than any other for whatever reason.

But it can and did. Not directly of course

Look at Apple, how much brand recognition and marketing it does. You hear the joke "it's not about owning an ipad it's telling people that I do!" Their job is to create brand loyalty and a "tribal belonging" (look it up) by making them feel that if they don't belong to X brand, then they're worthless.

Criticizing them isn't telling them they're wrong, it's an attack on them, their friends, and their core beliefs

it's not so different from SJWs in a way

It gets fucking infuriating seeing some bright side to a universally-agreed upon Bad Game brought up and there's an instant flood of sages or spicy memers screeching shill at the top of their lungs like this promising FAS sufferer

It really is the buzzword people say it is

When Duncan Donuts just made a statement saying "A Warcraft Directors cut isn't being allowed to happen".

Beaten Wife consumers think the desperate fan service of legion will 'save' the game but its dying hard and fast.

Blizzdrones have a serious case of delusion.

see

Blizzard, Bioware, Bethesda
Apparently you start your studio with a B name and you get infinite fanboys

Nigger all you had to do was ignore me. This is what you redditor fail to understand. i would of become bored and fucked off instead you feed me by getting triggered.

This is pretty much nails it. Just look at how obsessed our culture is with consuming. What you consume is part of who you are to a lot of people. Whether it be your clothes, your car, or even something as silly as what video games you play, people see what they consume as a part of who they are. Your dislike of it comes off as a dislike of them, so it makes sense that they get angry. You can see what you're talking about in how that many times when people defend their product of choice they go straight to personal attacks, "You're a hipster! Only idiots would dislike this! You probably play CoD!"

Yeah Bioware has so many fans they are shutting down their forums.

Not to be the devils advocate but forums really are outdated. Even image boards too, to an extent.

Not that I'm saying reddit or tumblr or Twitter is any better, but each platform has different strengths to interact with the masses

You'd think some an underground web of underpaid third-wolders with somehow sufficient enough knowledge of the English language who are marketing videogames on the internet would be uncovered or something.

The reasons why shilling on Holla Forums seems improbable or at least inefficient to me are as follows:
>we don't even buy games, most of us pirate anything that isn't Japanese, whereas sites like Reddit actively look down on piracy
>even if you do blatantly say 'Hi, I'm paid to shill this game, please buy it', everyone here is too skeptical of new games in the first place and will turn the game down on the basis of looking like shit and not fun

The point is not that Holla Forums doesn't get shilled on, but that the likelihood and effectiveness of such shilling is almost nihil and getting all antsy about shills is more damaging to the board quality then you think. Seriously, do you think that lowly of everyone around you that you have to point out something so blatantly obvious? We can see whether that guy is a shill or not, there is no need for you to point fingers just so you can feel good about keeping the board clean.

Do all the Fallout 4 threads compel you to buy the game? No, you pirate it, wait for a sale, or wait for Denuvo to be cracked. What exactly on Holla Forums would compel you to buy games? Mysterious people saying its good, or judging the game by the footage? Seriously, ask yourself: 'how do I get Holla Forums to buy and/or play my game?'

So yes, there is a small chance of someone being paid to treat this one upcoming game like the bestest shit of all time. Likewise, there are people who think older games like Super Castlevania IV are really great and better than Rondo of Blood. We do not call that person a shill, we call that person a retard. Apparently the one thing that separates a shill from retard is whether the game in question was just released. So maybe, people who are talking positively about new games you dislike are retards and are not paid to do so. How do you people tell apart retards from shills, then?

I guess calling them shills gives you an instant high ground as shills are evil and not shitting on a game makes you 99% more likely to be a shill, whereas you should back up your opinion on why a game is shit with arguments after calling someone a retard unless you want to look like one yourself. Do you see anyone shilling games you like? You don't, because most people have corrupted shilling into 'not talking about a new game I dislike negatively'. Why do you think nobody is complaining about people shilling EDF or Persona 5?

It also hurts OC and contribution, because people don't feel like making a thread about ((cool game that i want to play with Holla Forums)) because they know they will just get called a shill.

People make those threads anyways.

and many others. Do you even visit this site often?

None of those are obscure games.
They are all well-known. I mean seriously, Megaman, Half-Life, GenericAnimeRPG?

There is a thread about a game most of Holla Forums haven't played, and surprise surprise, it's not in your post.

You want me to list literally every thread where other anons are organizing multiplayer matches?
Don't be brick wall. People are doing exactly what you're saying "shill" paranoia is preventing.

Yes.

This existed long before shills were a thing.

Forum moderators are rarely paid.

Those people are just legitimately purely autistic.

8-Bit Deathmatch has kind of taken Doom multiplayer by storm in recent months but that doesn't exactly mean it's well known

For the same reason I'd shill the shit out of any game/candidate/product if I had the chance.

Cold and beautiful money

At some point you have to consider that maybe some people on Holla Forums actually like games.

And the worst and unfortunately way too common even on Holla Forums noticeable when someone critiques the game they like:

Fug

/thread

Depends what kind of shill we're talking. For example, professional shilling is done for money.

I am myself a former shill but for Microsoft (fuck your NDA). Basically we'd go into tech forums and blogs and shit and do shit like harassing anyone who dares insult or question Microsoft in the comments, calling out Applefags A LOT, "freetards" who used any alternative OS like FreeBSD, oh and while I didn't get to personally do it since I was on the services and OShilling division, a ridiculous amount of time and money was spent shilling against Sony's Playstation especially when PS4 & XBone were nuking it out (which ended up failing miserably) which included even posting racist anti-Japanese comments. There was even a handbook of what to post or what replies you were to use to certain comments exactly like you were some online chat customer support representative with stock replies.

Then there's the shill shills, the kind who do it for free because they're so dedicated to their own shit.

Also another bonus are the shills shilling shills. It is exactly what it sounds like. Companies, politicians, everything. They all hire shills to shill one another in a constant shill vs shill warfare which ruins everything for everybody caught in the crossfire. This current election cycle is a good reminder of that with

And these are all sources leftist biased sources too.

Even last fucking election cycle Obama had his own internet army of paid shills, many of whom regret it now since his second term was full of lies and disastrous.

Video games. People with no shame, values or ideology who just really want easy money. That, or people already so far indoctrinated into your bullshit that they'll happily take money to spread it to others because it beats working an actual job. If they're doing it for free, they've simply been brainwashed. Or are we going by the faGGot definition of shill, meaning "anyone who even vaguely might disagree with me and my faggotry"?

I'm a "community organizer" for a /tg/ game, but strictly in real life. All I do is generate enthusiasm and move their product by organizing events and integrating new players into the community. I took the position because I am not stuck in this job by contract–if the company goes full retard I am free to leave at any time for any reason. Of course that means I don't get as much. I can't imagine what it's like to shill a product you don't actually like. Holy fuck their entire career is a lie. Do they at least get training? I didn't. This is how I shill:
Tabletop gaming is a highly social hobby and it's amazing how companies like GW don't understand that having 99% of customers burn out and quit after 6 months is bad for them. A solid base of fans who will themselves propagate the game is mandatory for success. You need real human beings who look at what you sell and say "yes, this is good, I will pay you cash for this" and don't regret that decision later.

Online shilling is completely different and far more degenerate so I avoid it. I have no respect for those drones.

Interesting read user, assumimg this isnt fake, cant see how you could post proof anyway, how did you stumble upon the job? What was the pay like? Was it hourly? Per post? Do you feel dirty or otherwise used? Not that Id want to be a professional shitposter (essentially what shills are) but I find it rather fascinating.

If we didn't have shills, then we wouldn't have >>>/oven/ and >>>/gaschamber/

What people around here think of as "shills" are simply idiots who want to force their Reddit-tier taste on Holla Forums, and as we can see they have succeeded through sheer brute force. I'm sure there are actual paid shills here because it takes about 10 seconds to shit out an OP with the name and picture of a game and that's enough to create brand awareness. But the people who keep making Overwatch/Undertale/Whatever threads are certainly not paid, they are just belligerent retards.

archive.is/72jcc
lol

I was shilling like insane for that one online game I like. I actually did it for free, it's just I like the game so much and I wanted for more people to know and play such amazing game.
Needless to say it's currently filled to the brim with all sorts of cancer right down to ponyfags, and sometimes I wonder if I'm partially at fault.
Some people shill because they honestly love their game, but rarely they actually understand what they are doing.

well you blew it hope your happy.

Literal shillery is driven by personal gain, what retards have taken to calling shilling is often just fanboys that take any attack on their favorite software / hardware / corporate entity personally.
I don't understand why they do this but I have seen the same thing in conspiratards, they take any attack on their "theory" personally.

We're talking about the unpaid "i just like game" type of shill here, right? Not the paid kind?

It's pretty simple. If I like a game, and I feel like my opinion is in the minority, I will use every underhanded trick I can to try to fool other people into getting invested in it. My way is clearly the best way, and everybody around me needs to be shown the divine light of reason.

This isn't a difficult concept.

How do I find work for shill companies?

Looking for work as shill, please hire me.

hello?
