Moving up to your state's legislature… This is much more difficult, bordering on impossible depending on what state you happen to reside in. At that level, you actually have something that resembles power, can can actually make a difference, to a degree, so the establishment will do everything it can to prevent "undesirables" from attaining even that minimalist power.

Are you a felon? Or maybe just a misdemeanor? Driving while black/hispanic? Ever get a summons for possession? If so, you're probably prohibited by law from even running for office in your state. This is an important first defense against anyone that isn't going to toe the party line from running.
