I want to talk about artists for a second.

There's generally a lot of misconception over artists in video games. A lot of people think that programmers make bad directors. They think the best directors were the artists. Let me tell you something: artists in video games are cancer.

Artists have managed to destroy everything you love. Want to know why video games fucking suck now? Because artfags have taken over the development community. Give me a ruined franchise, I can point you to an artist.

Yeah, no, eat shit.An artfag is someone who likes to draw art or create 2deep4u stories over creating a video game. Hideo Kojima is a video game creator first and foremost: he designs the video game and makes it fun and makes sure the story complements it. That's entirely different - you can have artfag skillsets (mostly for the purpose of being able to avoid working with artfags) and not be an artfag inherently.

It's also worth noting that the huge overblown budgets in video games are allocated primarily to pay artists, because they act like whiny ass babies otherwise because they hate hard work, even though it's the easiest job. Programmers easily spend entire nights debugging the game, artists just have to fucking draw fat tits on the waifus over and over to get by.

It's true. I don't know why the hell people pushed so hard for video games to be considered art. Look at all the retarded shit that counts as art anymore (Invisible art being one). Did anyone really think video games would be insulated from pretentious hipster crap? People like to whine that story in video games have been neglected, but I see the opposite as being true. We have too many pretentious artfags who know nothing of what makes games good trying to sell us an "experience."

There would be no fucking games without art, the graphics don't design itself. Just because a few shitty artists directed few shitty games does not mean that artists ruin videogames, large shitty publishers do.

I don't have a problem with video games being "art", even if that means shitting paint, invisible art "art". If things were working correctly these would be naturally fall by the wayside most of the time because no one would want them if they were shitty games. But they're not selling art to people, they're selling the illusion of maturity to them. Games have to be "art" to be valuable, games have to be mature to be valuable, mature arty games make you a mature arty person, buy Fez 2. If the actual consumer base for games wasn't so insecure about their shitty hobby there wouldn't have ever been any problems, even with fags making shitty games.

Artists involved in video game development are failed artists that couldn't make the cut anywhere else.
Just like video game writers are failed writers that couldn't get their shit published elsewhere.
And video game journalists are failed journalists that can't write about shit that actually matters because they've been rejected everywhere else.
And programmers that work making video games are easily replaceable code monkeys that couldn't be hired from respectable software companies in the real world so they're stuck making virtual kid toys.

Basically if you're involved with video games on any level, you're a failure as a human being.

I've had to start doing this myself, because every "artist" that I tried to work with was worthless at best and malicious at worst. The one and only exception was an artist that was primarily a programmer, and just did art on the side.

Fuck "artists" to hell.

Art is literally the only last worthwhile thing on this planet, every other medium has disappointed me with it's corrupted parts and faggy people behind them.

Go watch the trailers from the latest E3 and you'll see. Maybe it's not actually a reboot, but it's different enough that people are calling it a reboot. It's more like The Last of Us with its over the shoulder perspective and linear environments, not to mention the fact that Kratos has a fucking kid with him that he must learn to bond with and protect over the course of this "award winning, mature, heartfelt, deep experience"

Art is a form of expression, usually utilized by degenerates who are ashamed of their fantasies or taboo tastes. Art is also utilized and monetized by attention seeking narcissists with some level of art talent but almost never the top talent. Yet, the overshadowed skilled and talented artists exist– pursuing the ultimate in their craft and making new and beautiful pieces that everyone can enjoy. They would get eaten alive by corporations and deadlines in the vidya. So we are stuck with the speedy bland made by the most degenerate virtue signaling cucks who hate their job.

Music is art too, and we are bombarded with good stuff regularly. Maybe all the big companies should pool the visual artist's work for background objects and weaponry etc so as the best would be in all games and time would not be so damaging and the sjw's without as much talent would not be utilized forcing them to fuck off elsewhere.

But what about the Concept art and the 3DCG required for games ? that shit is art and takes as much time as coding or something else to master. Good draftsmanship is a hard skill to master one that takes years of time and dedication, people with JUST talent are usually the ones with the shortest lived careers,the artists that really thrive are the ones who work hard and really love what they do. While I do agree with a lot of what you said I don`t think its fair to lump every artist together and call them all greedy jews.

This is literally the only fucking reason I'd ever want to pursue art. Porn is the only worthwhile endgame for improving one's artistic ability, anything else is fucking useless bullshit.

We are already aware of this. Think about it for a moment. Artists have always been in very high demand, but at the same time are rarely paid well. It is because so called artists have egos the size of the sun, and are obnoxious to boot. They will never listen to criticism either, sound familiar?

I think what you're onto is the fact that a lot of people get into art because it creates a positive feedback loop of showing off their art and receiving praise. They get addicted to receiving praise and so while actually getting good at art become the most unbearable egotistical faggots that think they're sent by fucking god himself. Doesn't work the same way for programmers though.

Programmers on the other hand do it primarily for the self-satisfaction as it's not easy to "show off" code. Spend two months making something and your average normalfag will probably say, "Wow that's all it does?" There's not much praise given to programmers. Some people like YandereDev obviously break that trend since from the beginning he admitted he was doing it not for self satisfaction but for the approval of some gayboy scriptkiddy he idolized. This is also why "indie devs" make horrifically unoptimized and badly written code, because they don't care what the code looks like; they have no self respect for that, only what the end result looks like, so that they can get praise from every faggot and their mother on Youtube. Who cares if it looks like an early PS2 game but runs at a steady 18 fps? Normalfags certainly don't.

So in the end the real thing making people worthless sacks of shit is that they are attention whores.

Art is easier said than done. I know that coders and gamedevs have a lot of animosity towards artfags for missing deadlines and being pozzed, but you'll never understand why until you learn it yourself.

It's a HUGE pain in the ass to learn it because there's a shitload of material that you have to learn and a shitload of errors that you're unaware of. Anatomy, Rendering, Perspective, Composition, Color Theory, Proportion are objective criterias of what makes art look good.


Coding is easier and less-time consuming since debugging and documentation can easily tell what you specifically fucked up. With Art, there's an ambiguous idea of what you're fucking up. That's why people constantly ask for input, not to attention-whore, but because they're unaware of what they're doing wrong.

If you think otherwiss, I dare you go on /ic/ and get good at drawing in under 60 days.

Art can be done quickly whereas programming takes a much longer time. Less time = more praise for less work.

Music, environments, animations, story, characters, none of that matters.

All games should just be lines of code and text.

I take it that you're a hobbyist. Nothing wrong with being one, but the ones that OP refers to work in the commercial field of art (illustration, animation, and Concept Art).

The commercial field of art very time consuming, not only because of the ambiguous and lengthy process, but because of the constant revisions that you have to do for it. Give Feng Zhu's podcasts a watch sometime.

Without art in games there wouldnt be games like silent hill 2, doom, godhand all of which require a degree in graphical fidelity to where the information they are trying to put accross can be displayed to the player easily and effectivley.
Can you just imagine how boring and mundane a game would be if all it was was wireframes and rough outlines?
Programmers and coders add the skeleton and base to the game. The artists add all the spice and personality whether it be in the writing, music, animations or enviromemt/character design.
Its not wrong to critize art, but it is wrong to only look at the negatives, and assume everything about art is wrong and should be treated as something to go against.

That's when you know they're doing it wrong. In any activity you should strive for getting better at it everyday, getting a pat in the back for a shitty job and not improving is not because said person does certain activity, it is because that person is an - like you said - attention whore and a shitty individual.

That's not true in all cases. Just as a programmer can write a quick chunk of code, an artist can make a quick sketch, a musician can write a quick melody. It's the scope and the end result you want to have that makes all of this shades of gray instead of an overgeneralization based on nothing but conjecture, just like OP saying that "a lot of people think that programmers make bad directors".

A bad game comes from bad management, and in a multi billion industry, blaming the director for a shitty product is just plain ignorant.

Being a director takes a set of skills that doing art does not teach at all, and actually can introduce terrible habits to have as a director, like craving approval.
This is not to say that an artfag can't shape up when stuck in the director's chair, but it's a rare occurrence.
Besides, at the end of the day it's the responsibility of everyone making the game whether it's good or bad, programmers included.
While the gameplay carries the most weight, a good visual/sound/writing team can carry a competent but otherwise forgettable game to the victor's podium.
