The original owner of ED decided to "grow up" at some point and sold the .com site and linked it to something called "Oh Internet!", a Know your Meme clone.
The trick was that she waited some time and never told anything to anyone, so people thought site was just down for maintenance. Only when Google Cache was empty they revealed what has happened.

When the original ED.com died, a new one was made using a backup some guys did two months earlier. The backup was text-only, so a lot of things were lost forever:
- Images. All of them. The userbase was encouraged to concentrate on this. I remember feeding my favorite article with pictures from my folder.
- Talk Pages
- History of edits
