The Bhagavad Gita describes the various forms of Yoga as a means of becoming One with God. The different "lower" forms of Yoga are consistent with Pagan forms of worship, such as sun worship. They have material and bodily benefits, but that is not the purpose of Yoga. The ultimate purpose of Yoga is to understand one's relationship to God and to escape from the cycle of samsara. The "highest" form of Yoga (as I understand) is Bhakti Yoga (the kind advocated by the Hare Krsnas) which is a form of Yoga that is considered "God consciousness" and can be done anywhere, at anytime, while conducting any task. It consists of giving up the fruits of one's labor to God and doing all things in service to God. One verse, in my opinion (which is worth nothing), sums up the Gita - and thus Yoga - pretty succinctly:

I'm a pretty pragmatic guy and I used to think meditation is all bullshit. But really it just takes advantage of the simplest mechanisms in your body to relieve stress and balance your brain chemistry. Breathing exercises change the flow of oxygen and CO2 in your blood. IIRC, stretching exercises (i.e. yoga) have been shown to release tension, like a massage. Additionally placebo is a powerful thing, as many medical studies for new drugs have shown (they always use sugar pills that do nothing as a control and there is always a surprisingly large number of people who earnestly believe the pill helped them).

When you combine these things with a philosophy that teaches you not to worry about stupid shit and actually practice it, these techniques reinforce each other because you create neural pathways and associative connections. You relieved stress one time by meditating and doing yoga or whatever, so your brain says "Alright, it's stress relieving time" when you do any of those things and it becomes even easier.

As far as Asian philosophy goes, Taoism has some pretty useful tenets for living daily life with less stress. It's a shame that it was always the minority in China compared to Confucianism, which is the philosophy that effectively made Asians into the insect people we know them as today.
