One thing I like about the ending, and how the submarine captain shows up, is that while the kids will be leaving the island, and the microcosm of human conflict that was happening there, they'll be returning to the macrocosm of human conflict that was a world war. I saw the trilogy back-to-back in theaters in 2012 and it was incredible. However good they are on the small screen, in the theater they're a religious experience.

Allegory in the sense that his intended meanings can be lost if we interpret part of his book as depicting a certain event in history. There are clear and obvious allegorical races and events in his books, but he didn't want us to get bogged down with the additional baggage associated with the real life events. The Shire is obviously rural England, Helms Deep is inspired by the Siege of Vienna, and the Dwarves are based on the mythos of Israel. His statement that there is no allegory means that we do not have to see the Dwarves in quite the same light as the Jews, they are not a stand in - merely based on some stereotypes (short, ugly, hairy, big-nosed, home-less, obsessed with gold), so we can still see their good, dutiful and honourable sides without having to break immersion because its clearly uncharacteristic of real life kikes. In the same way the politics and struggles of England need not be reflected in the Shire, there is no need for an Irish reader to wish for the Shires collapse because of their Colonial exploits. It is nonetheless heavily based upon rural England, especially in character, culture and attitude.

I believe that is all Tolkien meant by his statement that he doesn't like allegory. It would potentially take away from the message he was trying to present due to the extra real life baggage. Whilst battles like the Siege of Vienna do show the 'West' uniting defeat the evil hordes of the East - there is also all the baggage Protestant and Catholic mistrust, of the Venetians themselves attacking their own allies because of national and religious differences, and a host of other issues which Tolkien had no interest in.

I came into this thread to post this. Glad I wasn't the only one surprised to see subjectivists posting on Holla Forums like they thought they wouldn't be called out. By removing "author's voice" as they call it, and dictating that an author had no claim to meaning over his work, they in effect took ownership of creative works that compliment the cultural backbone of society and bastardized them through interpretation.

Upon taking ownership of various works, they can then cite those works when claiming they know what they mean - misrepresent a work's meaning and use the misrepresentation as evidence when writing a critique or interpretation of another work. Sidenote: Yes this does mean that leftists invented the use of citing irrelevant fictional works when talking about another work that is wholly irrelevant. The leftist can claim LOTR means whatever he wants it to mean with impunity because under subjectivity, no one is wrong. This also removes the academic pursuit of honoring the truth above all else. Tolkin had the idea of a story and world represented in long epochs of time since his early 20s, maybe even earlier in his life. He just took his time to lay it all out creatively in a long period of time and while The Hobbit and LOTR are essential in his combined work, it is also based on many different stories written as to match different times of the epoch he was describing. Some of these stories were assembled by himself in Silmarillion and by his son in Unfinished Tales.
