The Kurds have already effectively closed the Raqqa pocket, and they're gonna be a while dealing with it, so in the long run it's probably faster for the SAA to shorten their front-line, and drastically shorten their lines of communication (they now have to go north all the way around Lake Jabbul), before advancing along the Kurdish lines to prevent them going any further into Syria.

you can't take the southern front as seriously as the others – it's a fucking desert and the territory you see on the map there is just a vague guess of the map-maker, since there are few reliable landmarks in the area.

They've been trying to go there through M20 for ages now, and are in fact in the middle of an offensive there. ISIS has it well defended, however, and the progress is extremely slow (it's a mountainous area). If SAA manages to to take As Suknah, the rest will likely go much faster, as that's where the mountains end.

Okay, since you're fucking retarded, let me explain it to you in simpler terms:
SAA is leading a three-pringed offensive against ISIS, from the north, from the south, and from Palmyra. The three prongs are set to meet in Deir ez Zor, while accomplishing their respective objectives. The original plan was that the Palmyra prong would reach Deir ez Zor first (and it was its primary objective), however ISIS put too tough a resistance there and the Palmyra prong is moving at a sluggish rate, therefore the prong set to get to Deir ez Zor first is the southern one. The primary goal of the southern prong seem to be securing the Iraqi border and gaining foothold along euphrates, which is why they aren't taking a direct route to Deir.

The goal of the northern prong is to cockblock Kurds, since they are the biggest threat to Syria at this point and giving them any more territory would just make them stronger (they mustn't be allowed to expand even further along the Euphrates). The nothern prong is, at the moment, trying to improve the supply lines so as to make cockbloking kurds easier later on. They are headed to Deir just like the other two prongs, but it is not their only or primary goal.

Erdogan is a far lesser threat than Kurds are. In fact, I'd wager that if the clashes with SDF continue, he'll try to restore relations with Assad and Russia

As it stands, he gets (almost) nothing and Kurdistan pops up all across his southern border. For decades, that's been Turkey's - and Iraq's - worst nightmare. Since the FSA is all but dead and ISIS has essentially given up on Syria, the US has nobody else in the region which can even hope to threaten Assad. So, it's either give up Syria - which is a massive blow to their pride and reputation - or keep pushing the Kurds, which will only elicit greater backlash from Erdogan.

All that is to say, right now, the US is stuck in a bind and there's no real way to win. The closest thing would be to bow out graciously, but that's just not in (((their))) nature.

Russia even publicly released footage of some of the RAT line's of ISIS/Al'Nusra oil selling to turkey at their border crossing when Russia intervened and started their northern Latakia campaign in 2015. Presenting this evidence to the UN would have had a vote for economic sanctions against Turkey as a effect but might not even get the necessary votes. Ultimately such sanctions would damage Russia economically as well and Turkey would merely suffer international trust. Both parties choose to remain neutral towards each other.

Long term, Turkey might even take Manbij if kurds do not reflect and Russia continues their policy of no longer protecting Kurdish forces from turkmenen. Russia is sending in more forces to hold forward operating bases within claimed SAA territory so Syrian forces do not overextend themselves and continue their frontal assault against ISIS. Capturing the border Iraq-Syria border towards the Euphrates and cutting off key routes is paramount. This has also been discussed in the closed SRII group. Dividing the ISIS capabilities.

Reaching Deir'ezzor and pummeling the ISIS siege on it's air and ground base will see massive influx in SAA fighting force strength as well as a forced draft of young able men to take part in ongoing security and humanitarian aid, but at that point ISIS will be a clean up.

SDF or other US backed parties will try reach Deir'ezzor first, due to ISIS sending everything towards Suknah front, SDF faces limited opposition. They will rapidly try to capture As'Suwahr.

Securing the Iraq/Syria border and boxing in ISIS is part of the short term plan. ISIS will be defeated by the end of this year while pockets and sporadic sleeper cells remain. They will commit suicide bomb attacks.

The message to be sent to the FSA and turkmenen efforts will make it clear there will be no advances. Idlib is still needed for defeated and forcefully relocated terrorists from southern Syria! When that purpose has been server it will be reclaimed.

The Ghouta pocket is extremely problematic, it's densely urban and lots of tunnel networks. The area is heavily destroyed during the 2015 and 2016 Russian military campaign. The Ghouta pocket rebels was sustaining on traitors smuggling military hardware, bullets and food towards them. In February most of these smuggling routes came to light. Now, most police is also accompanied with MP to prevent any military aid to the ghouta pocket. A recent humanitarian effort gave the citizens and rebels food but their ammo is running extremely low. They were hoping on FSA from al'tanf reaching them, this has been successfully prevented. The US can't air-drop supplies unless it doubles down on it's proxy-war.

Ghouta is running out of weapons and the tanks are now operating in full effect. Most of their defense will center around Douma. A few months back they expended most of their TOW's. Most fighters will try to leave the pocket as Syrian forces push through the rubble, there is nothing left to fight for unless they wish to die. The green buses will arrive for them this year.

The US tried to free this pocket and re-invigorate it with FSA forces from Al’tanf, this was successfully prevented and those US backed forces have mostly been routed. US has seen the futility in their plan and is relocating forces. The recent ISIS attacks on Iraq border guards near Al'tanf is organized since Iraq's aren't doing what the Coalition want them to do. Linking up with Syria and securing a Iran land bridge has pissed them off.

This would cut off Al'tanf with only a 40 square kilometers of border area to exit to Jordan or Iraq. Jordan itself has no interest in pissing of these the Druze people, these people have the combat skills of Houthi’s and they will decimate Jordan’s northern region and decimate Jordanian military capabilities with guerilla attacks.

I think it has more to do with mass conscription. Can't expect much from a bunch of civies given guns and some basic training, before being sent off to fight. You can see the difference between, say, Tigers and the NDF, where one is an elite unit, and the other is literally just a militia, and a poor one at that.

I realize there are extenuating circumstances in Syria, but I was more talking about the overarching theme of Arabs being terrible at warfare. It doesn't matter which country you're looking at, either. Whether they're Saudis, Iraqis or Egyptians, they just tend to be thoroughly sub-standard. I'm not saying that Syria is incapable of producing quality fighters - the Tigers would put lie to that claim - but merely that the region has a tendency to produce poor armies, no matter how well equipped they are. Meanwhile, countries like Finland and Russia have conscription, but their armies turn out fine - for the most part.

You seem to be conflating regular conscription with the emergency conscriptions Assad is doing now – conscripted Russians are given extensive training, and they only send career soldiers to war. You could see how emergency conscriptions worked out for Russians in WW2, where they also died en-masse and won only through sheer bodymass.

I get what you're getting at, though, and I think it's because of shit standards. In most of middle east, military is corrupt as fuck and riddled with nepotism, and they get away with it because they know they can easily make a coup, or just don't act next time jihadis start chimping out. The local leaders have to stay on their good side. In such an environment, I don't imagine actual military training is given much focus, and a lot of trash probably gets into the rank and file due to having friends inthe right places.

It all comes down to leadership.

In Syria and Iraq you are dealing with a war that was sectarian from the start. Neighbors killing neighbors. Leadership was known and knocked off quickly. In Afghanistan for instance it was village versus village. Some local Talibs have been at work for the past 30 years and have alot of leadership experience and are damn good at what they do. There is no sectarian violence there on the whole and the leadership can stay put and develop.

Likewise, Stalin purged his leadership constantly. He was removing the officer corps for fear of coup regularly. And you saw the toll that took on the conscripts in the second world war.

This isn't to say that the Arabs are not still sub-human or the Afghans for that matter. They routinely rape women and children, boy and girl and should all be put to the sword. But I think their lack of abilities on the battle field are a matter of non-existent or poor leadership.
