I had friends in tech in SV in the 80's talking about how they were living poor. This has been going on for a long while. Except for one, they all moved away. The only way to make a buck was to get a house and sell it after it booms - but then you still need to move away or the rents will kill you. The idea of living in the van is to save money (the whole point of working); you then use that money to purchase a home rather than rent. If you can save 70k a year for even half a decade then that is the best part of a home paid for in much of the country. With either little or no mortgage debt you can then provide for a family rather, this increases your opportunity to have more than one child and to have those children raised properly by a partner who stays at home.
