He was running around killing people left and right and they were killing him, to which he would just quickly respawn and jump back in. I asked him if that was some gimmick to the server to which he responded "no, you have to do this until you're level 5."

The mumble server I used to frequent (the formerly 8/v/ one) also suffered from a form of this problem. It made playing video games with people from the board a nightmare.
Some of the people in the mumble were openly admitting that they post on leddit or exclusively use leddit and actually defended it with "not all redditors are cancer" excuses. Lo and behold, those faggots ended up being total pains in the ass to everyone.

There's also a rival system, give this one player the "MVP" connection against you, so that he will constantly destroy you no matter what you do against him. God help you if that particular player is actually good at the game.

Back in the days, 56k was perfectly playable and having 100K broadband gave you a massive advantage but you could still play along side players with 999ping without anyone rage quitting..
