Re monter sidesteps this issue pretty quickly, since politics, and merchantilism come into play fairly quickly instead of just being a lazybone like ainz. It helps alot that the protag is much more pragmatic and logical, and that aside from the large, overall story, there is always little things to solve. Though the manga is way behind the novel.

You can HAVE a good story with an overpowered protagonist, that's not a problem, and any half decent writer would know that. When it's a problem is a character using such overpowered abilities to solve every fucking conflict or issue with violence or brute force. There are many intricate and complex problems that you can devise that do not call for, or in fact can even get much worse, with application of force. These are most commonly social or political problems aside from emotional ones, but there are more.

Overlord and OPM both deal with overpowered protagonists, but the crux of the series are not how each episode is a new "problem" that gets "solved" with power, rather focuses on the drawbacks and nuances surrounding the ability of being overpowered.

1) Ainz spends a ridiculous amount of time contemplating and deliberating about every single move he makes, taking as few risks as humanly possible. His actions are cold and calculating, just like his character. Any average OP self insert character would spit bravado and macho bullshit (see: Naruto, the worst example I can think of) and just charge in to every fucking problem swinging and always manage to win no matter fucking what. Ainz doesn't do that.

2) His fight with his rogue servant was ALSO deliberate and calculated, and is shown as such at the end of the fight. Ainz didn't just waltz in there and shut her the fuck down because "omg Ainz so OP uguu!!1!", he specifically lays out his plan of attack, again taking as few risks as possible. He's overpowered but doesn't act like it, and his problems get solved by his planning and thought processes, not simply because he's powerful (I'm not saying he doesn't solve some issues that way, just not most of them).

I can't quite remember if he used a world class item or not to win that fight, but i know for certain he was wearing some old guildmate's armor. If he were truly an OP self insert, he would need nothing, no armor, no plan, nada.

So just as our guild was getting raid-ready and we had enough people getting near level 60, petpriest and brick left the guild because they couldn't handle petpriest being made fun of.
This severely damaged our guild as doing dungeons and raiding was delayed and all in all a lot of people stopped playing because boredom.

It's not like anything serious happened. They liked to minmax and planning out their character builds in advance. They metagamed on occasion, but not too much. This rubbed off a bit on me, so I feel the need to make more combat-focused characters rather than ones that would be fun to roleplay. At least it felt that way when I played with another group for a while.

The biggest problem I had with them was that every new campaign we'd organize after the first one would only last a couple sessions before everyone else got bored of it. No closure or anything; they'd just quit cold turkey without telling me. Happened at least 6 times. Hell, that other group pulled the same shit too. I'm in the same boat right now in terms of party tone expectation. The group was joined by a That Guy of That Guys, who ended up being the carpool of the group altogether, so we couldn't kick him out. Ended up just being a murderhobo party filled with nothing but first timers and me, who ended up teaching them how to play.

I may or may not also be capable of PunPun-tier builds due to getting into the game years before I could actually play it and subsisting on theorycrafting, and possibly even when trying to tone my shit way down inflated the powerscale of the game to comedic levels. The DM just let it ride and eventually the game ended at level 17 when he couldn't figure out anything that could challenge us.

We just had another player try to DM for once, and it was a disaster. So now I and the DM, who has experience comparable to mine, are looking elsewhere to play.

I'd really love to know exactly why people hate SOA. Best thing I can think of is because its normalfag popular, and people here hate that shit.

I minmaxed my current character singlemindedly, to the point where he can arm wrestle a tarrasque, but he has 7 INT. Entire group loves him because of the way I roleplay him, and I'm enjoying it myself. Character flaws make the game fun.
They didn't like it when I played a character incapable of understanding or speaking any language though, so don't go overboard.

If it never had recieved any attention I think more people here would've given it a pass, perhaps even liked it.

The thing is, it had some neat ideas, it had a standard harem, it had a love story as light novels do, the second season I think pissed off people more. But I enjoyed the Gun Gale Online arc, since it tied into the first arc.

This is only my 4th character, so I'm afraid the 42 STR snake person that can transform into a Large version of himself with 48 STR and 6 DR at level 15 is the most ridiculous. I don't really think up builds when I don't need one.
The one that couldn't speak was a drider but that scenario only lasted 3 levels before the group got fed up with the story, and the other two were generic. Our group's entirely made up of newfags including me, so we're only recently starting to get any interesting stuff character wise.

48 in a stat isn't bad for an early attempt at all.

My previous game ended when I pulled out my ultimate trump card to wipe out a demilich. I broke the speed of light while incorporeal and dropped an adamantine dagger into the material plane on him, which hit the atmosphere at something like 1.3 c. The resulting explosion incinerated his entire demiplane and dealt several billion d6 in damage when the force was calculated.

Dot hack was very meh, and pretty shallow. It didn't do anything interesting aside from create the swarm of "trapped in gaem" light novels and manga that we see today. I dropped it due to the blandness.

The realisation that SOA occurred was when I watches the first episode, and the villain floated in the middle of the plaza spouting exposition for five minutes. It did nothing interesting with the premise, and had effective power level bullshit. The second and third series fixed none of the problems that it had, and honestly, Gun Gale was the biggest waste of potential I've seen in a long time. The series deserves to be remembered as mediocre, because it's mediocre and would be so regardless of whether it had a large following or not.

Reminds me of one time years ago in Planetside when I stumbled upon some Japanese guy. I don't remember the details, but I think it went something like this: I was playing solo and just walked up to his Enforcer, noticing he was alone, got on the gunners seat and we just kinda started wrecking shit with all sorts of two man vehicles.

He didn't speak much English, but he really didn't have to, I would just get on what ever vehicle he had and we would go out on a two man rampage through the battlefield. Then my free trial ended (underage at the time, no credit card) and I never saw the guy again. We never really spoke, but we still worked well together and for some reason I still remember his name even though I only knew him for a very short time many years ago.

Voice chat has ruined MP gaming for me. I also remember when people actually talked with text and that was OK. Now to play most MP games you've got to join fecking TeamSpeak etc and listen to and talk to normalfags. Most of the time they don't even talk about the game. You try to immerse yourself in the game but all you can hear is a bunch of shouting normalfags "bantering" and talking about irrelevant normalfag shit. Also nobody wants to hear an autist with social anxiety speak and I don't want them to hear either.
