All this depends on your financial situation. If you have the money to go to college without picking up too much debt, or have been offered scholarships from a school either for merit or some sport, then go. If you like linguistics, study linguistics. Maybe even pick up a language or 2 as well. Take whatever interests you.
If you think there is no possible way you could get into a college, or pay for one without taking on unpayable amounts of debt for an education that may or may not give you a return, its up to you. If you like languages, and are willing to risk your life for the revolution, learn Kurmanji and Arabic and try to get in contact with the Lions of Rojava.
If you decide to go to Rojava, they need practically everything. Know english and Kurmanji well? They'll have you teach schoolchildren english. Like science? Work on setting up organic farming, or teach a class in chemistry at a university. Become an electrician? Help them set up a sustainable electric grid. They say that they have enough soldiers, and don't need any more bodies just yet. If you go, they will train you about how to fight, and you may serve in the YPG for a few months, but the rest of your time will be spent in civilian life. What they need are educated people who have skills they can teach others in order to create permanent, autonomous, democratic communities.
If you really want to make a difference in either place, learn a useful skill or study in some field, and go to Rojava to practice or teach it. The war in Syria is not ending any time soon, and Rojava is in a fairly safe(if tenuous) position.
If you want to stay in the US, go to a 4 year school, get a degree in something that you like, but is practical, and work on getting a job with that. Keep politics separate. Learning a trade is OK, but it won't be exciting or interesting.
If you are ABSOLUTELY SURE you want to go to Rojava, take some classes at a community college in a certain subject, or study a trade, and go in a year or 2. They'll still be around, and they'll still need help.
