Did anyone actually play Stardew Valley?

It was shit. It started out with a lot of promise and I had high hopes for it but then you quickly realize it's mechanically retarded and there's no game. Everything is simple, combat is weak, you've got more money than you'll ever need within a few months, crops take care of themselves with sprinklers, the greenhouse makes seasons pointless, animals are irrelevant except for achievements, your wife and child are pretty much unimplemented, etc..
Rune Factory 4 is a better game in absolutely every way by miles. If you're considering stardew, get RF4 instead. Seriously.

It's not really focused that much on waifu's, there are hardly any romance events / family events compared to harvest moon for instance. I think the gameplay had some interesting ideas, like being able to make several makers and generally having a production line in order to make money was pretty fun.

Ultimately though it does lack the charm that makes harvest moon / rune factory good, nor does it quite have the polished game mechanics. For instance, some crops are completely unbalanced as fuck and you can literally exponentially increase your money with some of them, with very little effort, thanks to sprinklers as well.

After I unlocked sprinklers I got bored as fuck. The crops took care of themselves, the romances were meh, and the dungeon was just rinse repeat ad infinitum. No interest in slogging through that shit to get to the stuff I hadn't unlocked.

The veneer wears off after a while.

The game starts to fall apart endgame where depth is lacking, money is too easy and there is nothing to really set you back or to worry about. I also think the 3 year duration is too lenient. I think the time system is pretty autistic. The combat is shitty.

All in all the 1st 20 hours were pretty fun, but it became old hat fast since i'm not a waifu-fag.

Stardew Valley is literally just a worse Rune Factory with a tacked on anti-establishment message. As someone that's played most Rune Factory and Harvest Moon games, sure there are some features in this game that I'd like to see in either of those, but the Harvest Moon devs hardly even learn what's good from their own games. As far as this game goes, it's alright.
The farming system is shit and they should have just stolen the crop levels from Harvest Moon, since they stole most everything else. The combat was shitty and what's worse is it was mandatory to progress the story. Dating and Marriage in this game were bland when compared to Harvest Moon and the limit of gifts per week was a way to artificially extend the game for waifufags so that they wouldn't stop once they realized that marriage made the NPC lose all personality and also so they wouldn't run into the subpar writing of the Heart events as often (One specific event I remember where one of the girls wanted to go fight monsters in the cave with a busted wooden sword, because she was bored, and when I said it wasn't a good idea she called me sexist.). The lack of a good map, like most HM games have, makes trying to find a specific NPC almost impossible unless you have their schedule from the wiki. Shitty skill progression tree, why make a tree for the skills when one route it vastly superior, and also why not make an in-game way to respec once you find out your chose the shitty path. Very little actual content, all there really is to do is to finish the town hall.
The only reason this game was so big was due to the fact that it was just Harvest Moon on PC.

tl;dr: Very reminiscent of the Harvest Moon on SNES that was janky as hell. I look forward to the inevitable sequel, because the dev looks like he sort of understands what makes a good game in this genre.

Most characters are just remakes of previous characters, or even the exact characters from a different game, there have been plenty of diversity fills in the Harvest Moon series.
It started with making more distantly Asian characters, while also adding in some Asian crops. Then they just started adding whatever they wanted, looks like it's mostly Indian characters though.

I played it for a while and it's pretty fun at first, but after a couple years you run out of meaningful ways to spend your days. Romance options aren't great. They're not bad, but none are worth starting a family with. Might be different if you play a girl, dunno what the male romance options look like.

People bitch about the greenhouse and sprinklers but they're just part of the progression of the game. Freeing up more of your time to fish or forage, or fight. And you don't get the greenhouse or even decent, efficient sprinklers until mid/late game.

Harvest moon was fucking amazing for farming, its simple yet complex once you start increasing the scope in which you grow food.
The entire upgrade system revolves around you finding new places and improving farming efficiency.

The game is fun and pretty good for what it is. There's a few cool ideas I'd like to see in Harvest Moon and Rune Factory taken from here and the entire farm has a lot more things to do then any of those games ever had, with all the machines, sprinklers, decoration, bees, and small additions like the cave bats.
I still much prefer the other games, though.

What I actually didn't like as much and I'd love to see a game handling this better is this concept about giving gifts to increase friendship with people. When you look at it, that paints a very egocentric and materialist view on everyone else where they'll love you for the amount of crap you can dump on them.

Having relationships being based on helping people, having a great farm, your fame, your beauty and what you say to people would be infinitally better.

Give the player the option to assist NPCs in their job for a good initial boost that doesn't increase friendship for more than 5/10 at best and gives you some reward like cash or an object.

The bigger your farm is, the more impressed everyone else is as well, giving you a flat bonus to friendship as it grows and\or unlocking higher levels of friendship.

Eating good healthy food makes you grow beautifull with time and NPCs note that, giving you more friendship when you talk to them and\or lowering the requirements for Heart Events. Dying in combat reduces your beauty a lot, just faiting reduces it a bit. Actual stakes in combat, not just cash penalties.

Give the player a reputation. You work for long on your farm or helping people, you get a reputation for "working hard", you spend most of your time exploring the forest, you get a reputation as "wanderer". Same for reading books, talking with lots of people, fishing and sailing. You can even have up to 3 reputations in order of importance.

You can even make it so different people react differently to your stats. A vain girl might only like you if you're beautifull and have a reputation for being wealthy, while another girl might not care what you look like as long as you have reputation for working hard and being kind.
Most of these things are even great mechanisms to tie in progression that surely make more sense than "get a golden hammer to smash this rock".

It was fun, but the lack of simulation elements doesn't allow for longterm play as there's clearly only a few "good" crops and products to aim for and as such it's a completely linear experience. The relationship elements were ultimately uninteresting.

A good example are huge crops, they are just nice to look at but gameplay wise they end up rewarding not enough to warrant replacing the "good" crops for a chance to get them.

Your character beauty, not yours, you neckbeard. An acceptable minimum for most girls and an extra for more petty and vain girls makes sense, if they wanted to marry a pork, you have a few in your farm. Dressing nice could help as well.

I was mostly reminded of the first Fable where getting hit in combat would leave you with scars that made people like you less but be afraid. Good characters would heal those scars faster, Evil characters could wear them as extra Fear factor. It was a bit of a shallow mechanic, but nevertheless it could be repurposed for a game were dating is such an important concept. Especially considering fighting (Rune Factory) or consuming cooked meals with your own ingredients (both games) tends to be central gameplay elements.
