The caveat for that is the controllers use the same connectors used by the Wii Remote peripherals, and can only be used with the Wii Remote otherwise. Not that I mind, considering I already use my Wii and Wii U as NES emulation machines to begin with, but still something to think about.

Smartphones do not have good controls without a third party controller. I have recently played and (100%) completed Wario Land on a smartphone out of boredom.
While it was not that hard for me, the controls felt absolutely terrible because of the lack of feedback.

Actually, it probably does have NES hardware in it. A lot of those "plug-n-play" tv things do, especially those Namco and Atari ones. And then there's all those shitty Chinese bootlegs made to look like Gameboys and PSPs and whatnot that tend to be full of NES roms. They're dirt cheap to make that way. The Atari 2600 had a version of the same processor so the Atari ones are able to run the games without them having to be ported, though the sound and graphical hardware is usually closer to what the NES has.

i have a pi with a bunch of emulators and 2 controllers hooked up to a nice crt. it may not be perfect but it's convenient and comfy (and it has more than 30 games)

To be honest, there are some advantages to this release.

First, the USB pad, which means scalpers making adaptators at twenty bucks can go fuck themselves.

Second, it seems that the console can be opened in order to use games, which means everyone's dad (as long as it's still alive, that is) can go grab his old games from the attic or the cave, and play them again.

And third, it's probably the dead of some scalpers on eBay. Some of the games of the list are priced over the Mini NES' price once bundled together, which means that retrofags will buy this to complete some of their collections, forcing the scalpers to lower their prices.

I'm looking forward the scalpers' rage, since it's gonna be highly amusing. Oh, and check the recent copyrights taken by Nintendo, you might notice something interesting.

You still need controllers and a TV. The only problem is that not every emulator is going to be perfect, but they are all free.

I use emulators when they are good enough. All it takes is a controller, a computer and a monitor/TV, and you can play a shitload of systems for free.

I do still have a bunch of consoles, though. Just not nearly as many as I would have without emulators, and it's already kind of a mess that takes a lot of space.

And if you REALLY want that NES controller, you can just google "NES USB controller" and find something in the $10-$15 range very easily. Meanwhile, how much do you think Nintendo will be selling a second controller for the box? My bet is on no lower than $20.

You buy one controller for $15 and download one file plus an additional file per game you want, that's all. There's no hoops. It's the fucking same except a fraction of the price, and every game you want without having to go out of your home to buy more cartridges at a way too high price.

I can guarantee you it won't be a hit. It will sell to some collectors, but this won't be a best seller by any mile, mainly because while there is a lot of nostalgia for Pokémon, not many people played the NES and became nostalgic for it because, let's get real, 8 bits were pretty shit compared to 16 bits and above.

For some people it is not so easy. I have this one friend who ever since his wife left him he has been this miserable and depressed wreck. As kids we used to play pokemon and shit together. When pokemon go was released I was actually able to get him to come out of his apartment and come jogging with me because pokemon go gave him that little bit of incentive and encouragement to come outside and walk around again. He also seems to be a bit more cheerful and talkative now that a past hobby has been revived in a sense.

I personally wouldn't even use the NES controller. It's not exactly the most comfortable thing for someone with big hands to hold.

Recently I have been moving towards PS2 controllers even on my other consoles. Having a bunch of controllers around just takes too much space. It's better to just use adapters. The PS2 controllers are good because you can use them on pretty much any console, so you can just get one hell of a good controller and use it for everything. Even the Dreamcast has adapters with VMU slots.

On emulators I also do that. An NES controller only works for NES and Master System games. I would rather just have one controller that works for everything, and one stick for everything.

Having one controller that is as good for N64 and PS1 games as it is for NES games is really convenient.

It probably has something to do with the Google Play Games integration API. I think it is impossible for an app to actually have (lawful) read/write access over your Gmail account because that's a recipe for disaster. However, it probably has access to your mail address.

This thing isn't for people anything like us. It's not for people who know how to grab an emulator and ROMs, nor is it for people that would buy ROMs on 3DS/Wii/Wii U Virtual Console. It's an impulse buy for people that feel some nostalgia about the NES or Nintendo in general, but don't have enough of an interest in video games to keep up with current gen consoles.

Not only is it well timed to take advantage of the Pokemon GO craze, it's also (along with Pokemon GO) very effective marketing to get the public thinking about Nintendo. I've already heard of multiple people that picked up a N3DS for Pokemon after playing Pokemon GO, just because they hadn't realized up until then that they would want to play another Pokemon game. Nintendo's strategy right now looks to be blitzing every F2P and low-price-barrier market to plant that seed in the public's head, that hey, I would actually like to play games like this again, so that there will be lots of interest in the NX and its much higher margin games when it launches.

I was born in the SNES era so I didn't really manage to get a hold of the first Super Mario Bros. or the original The Legend of Zelda until I was around 10, and let me tell you they were absolute trash. Same goes for Genwun, although I did manage to play it when it came out, and even without replaying it I know it's hugely inferior to gen 2; even the Pokemon designs, which are what people usually praise about those games, were garbage compared to gen 3.

They could have put some more of those black-box games onto it to at least get the number up to 50 or something. No one is going to buy Clu Clu Land for 5$.
