There isn't really anything wrong with 'sandbox' being a 'genre', per say. The issue that comes up is when people do not properly make that sandbox with things to fucking do.

Ideally, a sandbox should be an interesting world worth exploring, with plenty of tasks, people, skills, trades, and other such stuff to do.
Give lots of player customization and dialogue options so as to allow the player to create their own characters, and as a result increase replayability with no two stories the same.

Best way to think of it is, ideally, it should be a game of DnD without a shit tier railroading GM.

But nobody does that because they're fucking morons and that's hard.

Bethesda games may be shit, by all means, but thanks to those bare minimum options, I can put far more hours into those admittedly shitty changes than I can in, say, The Witcher, or Dragon's Dogma.

Point being, having the ability to make your own story lets you play the game more than one that forces you into single tale. And it helps that it's fun.

New vegas cannot work in a skyrim-esque open world. In new vegas going to the strip at level 1 means people wont know you, but if you do lots of quests before then, you get different dialogue options and quests because you are well known. Good games have focus.

this is clearly just another remaster, the mods won't be pay for when they're on console, they're just going to be garbage like all console mods. Mods are bethesda's thing, it's really the only part of their games that's redeemable, being able to mod their remake makes zero difference when you compare it to every other remake, in fact the option to get mods for the remake makes it much better than most remakes because there's actually a huge improvement to the game's content.
Really this is better than most remakes, even if you don't care for the game you can't say that other remakes are better or even equally as good as this one compared to the base game, but for some reason Holla Forums thinks this one is the end of the world.

I only had fun with it once I had modded it to be an entirely different game.

To be specific I turned it into a hunting and hiking simulator, with hunger, thirst, sleep, warmth and cold, with weather affecting all of that.
Each day I would pack up my camp, head some random direction and hunt my days food as I walked.
As it reached night I would start a camp fire and my bedroll. I would work on leather making weapons, clothing and camping gear before retiring for the night.

I hiked all over skyrim like that. Never did a quest. Made me wish I could get a proper hiking and hunting game.

It's the same game, in the same engine, with some additional effects. All the mods made for it will work exactly the same.

I already wasted the money on Skyrim, I have no reasons not to at least play some of the really good mods for it.

I don't like that the Human Revolution remaster removed the piss filter. The game actually looks worse without it.

Well, it might have done that, but I also think the lighting was all done with the piss filter in mind. Without it, it seems like something is missing–the colors aren't as vibrant as they should be.
It would have been best for them to get the black-and-gold look without resorting to a filter, but once they had it in place, taking it out was a mistake.

I put about 200 hours into Skyrim.
I can tell you that it's absolute garbage. There are maybe two hours of actual content stretched out thinner than a crêpe.
Skyrim is an ocean with the depth of a water droplet.
I'll try to list out every problem as I can think of them, in no order:

A lot of weapons feel the same. A giant sword, a giant axe; what's the difference?

All the combat magic types feel the same. I'm not even sure what difference between fire, ice and shock are.

The summoning spell are garbage, the atronachs aren't worth shit.
Speaking of the atronachs: THEY GAVE THE FIRE ATRONACH A FACE. WHY? SHE WAS WAY HOTTER WHEN SHE WAS FACELESS.

All the quests are copy+pasted, I actually think a lot of them are just randomly generated.

Everywhere feels the same, one thing that TESIV at least did right was make each town feel and look different.

"Hard" enemies aren't harder, they're just damage sponges.

Dragons are way too easy, fucking bears are more of a threat than them.

Dragon Shouts are fucking USELESS HOLY SHIT, THIS WAS A MAJOR SELLING POINT OF THE GAME. I completely forgot shouts even existed until I started righting this exact line.
The only worthwhile one is Unrelenting Force (Fus Ro Dah), which is also the most famous one and the one they used in all the advertising.
They knew it was the only good one. I honestly forgot other shouts even existed when I was playing, most of them are garbage.

There's no enemy variety. Most of what you kill will be undead, bandits or just random wildlife. They're all effectively the same thing but reskinned and given different stats.

Magicka was simplified to fuck, you can't make your own spells anymore. You can only use pre-made ones. Half of them are also useless, the only ones you'll find yourself using will be healing and combat spells.

Archery is fucking useless outside of stealth attacks.
Speaking of which, the "stealth" in this game is laughable. Just get low to the ground, shoot an enemy in the ass, hide, wait for him to stop caring, repeat until he's dead.

Half of the skill trees are garbage, you have to dump points into worthless perks just to unlock the perks you actually want to use.

Potions are pretty much completely useless (notice a trend here? Skyrim has a lot of content, most of it isn't worth going near or is just a inferior reskin or something else), you don't need health or magicka potions -I'll go more in-depth on why next- and most other potions do things you never need.

Now, you might ask "why exactly did you say you don't need health or magicka potions?" to yourself. Well, if you did ask that then you've never played Shitrim, because it has regenerating HP and MP, effectively rendering potions absolutely useless.
If you somehow do get low on health; healing spells are far better than potions. Get low on magicka? You can use the reverse of that spell to lower your health for magic.

Money is rarely actually useful, random loot you find out in the world is better than stuff stores sell, and potions are so shockingly abundant you'll question a store solely selling them could even be profitable.

Mounts and the like aren't very useful because fast travel exists.

Technically you can't join the Thieves' Guild without picking the lock on a market stall, stealing a ring, and reverse-pickpocketing it into a mark's pocket.
An incredibly tiny quibble; the Thieves' Guild questline is indeed 99.9% thievery-free, and can be completed easily by an orc warrior in full plate armor.

Speaking of badly-written faction questlines: Dawnguard. You're a vampire slayer. You find a vampire. Instead of slaying the vampire, you befriend her and walk her home. Why?
Well, of course it's because whoever wrote it wanted to force every character to go through the "do you want to be a vampire lord y/n?" dialogue, but that doesn't change the fact that it's an absurd loss of player agency.

Bioware makes flawed games, but their flaws are new almost every time. They find new ones, and they learn from them. Sometimes they overreact like taking exploration out of ME2 and ME3, or basically what Dragon Age Inquisition is looking like to be. Bethesda on the other hand repeats the same flaws since Morrowind.

Are some Bioware games overrated? Yes. Dragon Age Origins is a huge example, the first Neverwinter Nights game is another, and to some degree, Mass Effect 2 (due to its poor main plot), But that does not make the company overrated. Baldur's Gate II is one of the greatest RPGs ever made, KOTOR was an excellent entry to the Star Wars EU, and Mass Effect as a trilogy is one of the best gaming accomplishments last gen.

The Major cities in Skyrim were better than the major cities in Oblivion, architecture, layout, population activity, politically, lore, factions, industrially, agriculturally, city outskirts. While the Imperial City is far larger and with far more content, it gets hunkered down by being a letdown as big as TESIV and TESV themselves.

The major cities in Skyrim were far more architecturally distinct than the ones in Oblivion, and architecture in Oblivion felt far more arbitrary or in the better cities skin deep. Architecturally Skyrim has far more detail in every building and many buildings are actually developed with cultural or historical significance, something Oblivion largely passes over. The chapels in Oblivion are all the same building across all cities and even after 1000+ hours in Oblivion I can't tell you what chapel is in what city, but with only around 250 hours in Skyrim I know that the chapel in Riften is the chapel of Dibella and the chapel in Whiterun is the chapel of Kynareth. Castles in Skyrim have actual names and cultural significance, where as the ones in Oblivion are just "county" castle and are just the place where a count lives.

Limiting guild halls to only certain cities was a great idea and helps etch out an individual cities identity. The Fighters guild headquarters is just the fighters guild headquarters, it's just a building where the fighters guild is managed, versus Jorvaskr, a building built from the upturned boat that Ysgramor sailed from Atmora to Tamriel on.

Another problem I had with cities in Oblivion was the placement of the cities in the world, I'm going to ignore the fact that Leyawin blocks off access from the Niben bay to Lake Rumare. Cheydinhal, Chorrol, Bravil and Kvatch all feel completely arbitrary in their placement, the Acropolis that Kvatch sits on feels completely out of place, compared to the acropolis that Whiterun sits on which is partially man made based on the external walls sitting lower than the internal walls, and even the valley flows downwards then upwards to it which is topped off with a natural spring. Riften sits on the stupidly placed lake and has has a fishery, water ways, boats in the water ways and boats on the lake. Markarth is etched into the side of a cliff complete with waterfalls, is the most distinct city architecturally and the whole city has interesting lore behind it, also Markarth is the only city with "verticality".

In these aspects and many more that I haven't bothered to mention Skyrim has vastly superior major cities than Oblivion. Personally you can enjoy the cities in Oblivion more than the ones in Skyrim, they have better quests at leas, but it's not a matter of opinion what game has the better cities, that's definitvely Skyrim.

I enjoyed Skyrim with the Perkus Maximus mod, it makes a massive range of playstyles open up with a completely reworked perk system.

It also adds timed blocking and ripostes in combat, while rebalancing damage values to make everything more deadly.

Combat is more strategic, especially for mages. Wards are actually better than most shields in the rebalance, so it makes up for the magicka use.
Ward absorb still works and it's awesome now because of this.
Magic is bass-cannon powerful, duels with NPC mages are challenging and if you fuck up your ward timing you'll die instantly. On the other hand you can nail the same guy with a thunderbolt of your own too, instead of bandits with stupidly inflated HPs. The mod adds a huge amount of well-scripted spells, like a short-range blink, a spell that makes you run faster when not in combat, and dozens of destruction spells with unique and useful effects instead of just straight damage.

The melee combat is dragged up to acceptable standards. Weapons are classed in a triangle, the points being Bladed, Piercing, Blunt. Weapons that are part Bladed will cause bleeding DoT, part Piercing will ignore armor, and part Blunt will have a chance to stagger.
In order to get an opportunity to attack, you have to time your blocks to parry strikes, which staggers them and grants you a very short period of bonus stats, otherwise they just continuously wail on you until your stamina runs out. When you timed block a spell with a ward after perks, it restores your magicka based on the magnitude of the spell and reflects it back. NPCs can do this to you as well.

The AI is massively improved. Enemies actively take cover and dodge spells and arrows, react to things you do (they'll walk on a rune they didn't see you place, but if you place it in their vision they will switch to spells or bows, or simply run away, rather than walk on it). Higher level characters are difficult to beat in melee, and nearly impossible when you're being swarmed due to bleeding and stagger. Timed blocks work for you and the NPCs, so repetitively mashing the attack button will get you killed.

It's like a different game.

It's even worse than that. Most quests are lumped into arbitrary groups, and you can only receive one in each group at a time. So that throwaway character you talked to once, ever? Almost certainly had a quest you never got because another unrelated quest was open in your journal. This can lock you out of Thane advancements too–I had to get someone's stick out of a cave just to be able to get the dialog to start being a Markarth Thane, because I had talked to that person by mistake like 3 hours prior.

It's ok though because the only remotely interesting quest in the entire game is the Sanguine one.

I really like the Mass Effect series.

The games are about as Biblical as Star Trek. The story and universe of the games have a lot to do with the theory of Evolution (not unlike a great deal of science fiction in books and movies out there today), so if that is something you don't want to expose your spirit to, then you might want to avoid the game.

There is an optional romantic plot that, if followed by the player, culminates in a brief sex scene between two characters. The game can be completed without doing this, but if you want it, it's there. I'll be honest; the romance is not very well fleshed out and I don't personally think this adds to the game experience or rewards the player at all. This is a very take-it-or-leave-it aspect of the games.

There is a lot of action violence in the games. If you get spiritually troubled by this, then you might want to avoid the games.

The games feature a world with alien races, each with their own religions that have evolved on their planets. You can go through the entire game unaware of this, but if you look up the info in the Codex, you can find out all sorts of interesting things about, say, Asari religion. The religious views of the races are more of a footnote to a well-built game universe, but it's there if it interests you. Or if it bothers you.

Because so much of the game's content depends on how you, as a player, choose to go through the game, the whole experience is relative. You could, for instance, imagine your character, Shepard, as a Christian, and ask yourself "What would Jesus do?" during the various game moments when you have to make choices. You can skip all the sex and act very noble. The game will still be violent, and the story will still have to do with Evolution.

Personally, as a Christian, I have no problem playing the Mass Effect games. (Just finished number 2, in fact!) But I also have no problem watching movies, reading books, and playing video games that I do not personally agree with. My own advice is this: don't do anything that you think you shouldn't. The Bible is pretty clear about telling us not to mess with someone else's faith, just because we feel that God has given us the liberty to do something. So, if you think Mass Effect is sinful to play, don't do it. However, if you are just curious about whether or not it's okay, then I would say it's fine. It's secular, and it has a lot of ideas that you won't agree with as a Christian, but so do Star Trek and Star Wars. Play discerningly. Know what you believe and what you refuse to agree with. There have been times in my life where I've stepped away from video games and movies because I was feeling closer to God doing that. And there have been times when I've kicked back on the couch with the Lord and we played some Kingdom Hearts together. So, if you can do it while sticking close to God, I really recommend Mass Effect.

Mass Effect is fun. I can't think of what would be "arch blasphemy" in the series. If you don't want to play it because you want to focus on more serious things, that's fine, but it isn't like the games are evil.
