Depends. In third person games, usually a female character with features I am attracted to, so I can look at something nice while I play. Sometimes male models will have better animations or other options, or will feel more appropriate for the setting. It doesn't really matter that much, since I don't self-insert.

If you play a female character you can dress up as fem-Conan, Maleficent, a literal semen demon, the elf from Dragon's Crown, or female law enforcement paladin, and probably at leas a dozen other things I forgot to list, available in both skimpy and non-skimpy variants especially if you've got mods, while playing a guy only gives you either Warcraft armor or Souls series armor, with maybe a set or two in between those extremes, and the mage robes.

Why do games never seem to have male-exclusive armor? The only one I know of is Dragon Quest 9, but there's still more female-exclusive armor, and some male armor has a female-exclusive counterpart.

Oblivion is probably the only game that does that sort of thing, and even then it's only for clothing, not armor.

New Vegas is a good example, firstly I played as good guy picking what I found right, then I replayed as a contrarian bitch with an accent on melee and explosives instead of ranged.

If there classes are locked to characters/genders, I pick whatever class I like and don't care about gender.

It depends on the character, obviously, but if I'm not rping it'll depend on the playstyle I'm going for. Stealth, speed or certain types of magic are female as are most persuasion characters. Strength, armour and other types of magic (those I see as old mage/warlock style) are male again including intimidation if that's a thing.

It's not that i'm puritan or anything, but i prefer armor looking armor, and a lot of female armor in MH has skirts and such, and while sure skimpy male armor and female "full" armor exists in it, but the overall armor tends to lean towards the seperation.

I like to roleplay mainly male characters but will branch out to female ones too. For a lot of games, I go with the classic "rather be staring at female ass" argument but if a game presents unique roleplaying options for either gender, all the better.

In M&B I almost always go male (made like, two female characters in all my playtime), I feel it's just more suitable for the roles I play in that game.

Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, FO3 and FONV all had large mixes, but generally male for my first/more lengthy playthroughs, unless I'm using a lewd mod setup or really want to roleplay a specific female character, such as my favourite.

Dunmer female mage normally, usually a student who rises to become a affluent and power magister, spellsword or arcane archer, wanting to unlock the secrets of the Daedra, and with mods, necromancy, sometimes she persists through playthroughs, usually either from Lichdom, Vampirism, or a "pact" with her patron Daedric Prince.

FO1 I went male with my Vault Dweller but FO2 I went female with my Chosen One, for the main playthroughs (though gender changes on different character builds)

Dragon's Dogma main character is a female elf (mainly warrior) who is getting scars and a tan as she goes along (thank you, secret of metamorphosis), as well as some muscle tone, hahaha.

Currently playing Underrail with a male character, though I don't think gender matters beyond your character portrait (not sure, the game is absolutely huge and filled with stuff to do).
