Basically the main problem with Fates is that's localized like it was an Animal Crossing game. Every single moment has to have a joke if possible. If they can't fit a joke, make the character "quirky." Hisame once mentions pickles in the japanese version of FE:if so in the Treehouse version, he's be rewriten to mention pickles every single he opens his mouth.

I disagree with this. It's not a localization place to fix plot holes. That flies in the face of my view of what localization should be and gives localization teams too much leeway to fuck shit up. As for the Olympics? It's a terrible financial investment that Japan shouldn't be making. But if you do host them, you shouldn't change for those around you so long as your culture isn't oppressive in any way (and if it is oppressive, the Olympic committee likely wouldn't approve your bid. so the point is moot).

The open otaku will definitely be loud, but they're still a small minority group within Japan, and I doubt there will be many others who want to stick up for them. Even if the closeted otaku start talking, I wonder how far we'll get.
The only hope is that Japan continues to want to "export" anime as a large source of revenue. If the foreign audiences (who actually buy things) also chime in, there might be a better shot, especially if we can get producers on our side. Just know that it will likely have to wait until they start to move before the general public even remotely gives a shit about this.

Glad he's shitting on the article but AA is an example of good localization. It's just an example of the most extreme case. Ace Attorney is basically a singular exception because of how much of the game's mood and tone are locked behind the Japanese language itself. It isn't really emblematic of what a typical good localization looks like, but rather an extremely odd outlier that shows how hard it can be to translate the two languages and highlights the dichotomy between preserving the mood of a game and preserving direct translation. AA is what you get when you have to choose. And I think Capcom chose right. Bad localizers like to use it as a convenient excuse, without really going in to why AA is the way it is.

It's not perfect, but it's necessary. The key point is the intent. In AA names are changed because that's the best way they could come up with for English speakers to get the mood and tone of what the Japanese game has right. Fates changes things because Treehouse didn't like the original game and didn't care about preserving anything.

Also they changed ramen to burgers, not sushi, so clearly he's not versed himself.

Tone and mood are more important than direct translation, even XSeed agrees with this. I've got mixed opinions on the Ace Attorney localization, so I guess I can comment on this.
Here's what I will say:
Clearly, it's not intended for the hardcore audience, it's meant to be accessible.
The games are simple enough that a kid can play them, don't want to alienate them with too foreign a setting
The legal system is based on that of Japan, so a lot of the social commentary is lost. This is arguably the weakest aspect of this method of localization.

The localization team didn't really have a lot of foresight, so after they established the American setting, things started getting really Japanese which lead to the current state of the series. It was either to retcon prior changes to fit newer games (which is bad practice) or to just stick with it, and just make the setting laughably localized (like the Yakuza family in the middle of downtown LA).
Ace Attorney is obviously not a game targeted exclusively at weebs, so a lot of the japanese stuff getting changed is okay. A lot of humor is preserved (which weebs wouldn't catch, anyway), and it's generally held up very well because it's not filled with memes. At the end of the day, it's a game about solving problems, and making your clients look innocent. Where they are doesn't really matter. You just want to investigate crimes and pretend to be a cool lawyer.

What doesn't make sense is something like SMTxFE seeing extensive changes for the western market. That's where the vice article really fails.

The AA games were not changed to be in American with English names because they thought people wouldn't "get" Japan. That is a fallacy, and it's wrong.

They were changed because every fucking thing in Ace Attorney is a pun. The entire game is steeped in language humor that would not make sense in English. In some cases the names are critical to solving a case. They wanted people to have the same experience Japanese players had so they chose tone over keeping the same names.

It should be noted the characters are still the same. They act the same. They have the same problems. In almost every case even the joke in the language is the same, just adapted for English instead. They thought it was better to get the series' humor and tone rather than leave them in the dark by leaving the names in Japanese. This is the exact opposite of what Treehouse did.

Like I said, it's not an example of a good typical localization. It's an example of an extreme one when you're backed into a linguistic corner.

Grandia II stumbled pretty hard around the time Ryudo absorbed the Horns of Valmar and subsequently went from "dick-ass sellsword" to "boring generic hero" and never completely recovered. Grandia X was a neat game. It was a Diablo-style dungeon crawler with a modest plot but an absolutely amazing battle system. Combo techs are something I missed in GIII, even though they added aerial combos. I didn't like GX that much on the first playthrough, but it grew on me hard over time.

III is just terrible. The battle system is great and the graphics are beautiful, but literally every single other part of the game is absolutely irredeemable shit.

I will never understand why they wanted entertainment so badly. Studies have shown again and again that it doesn't influence people like they think, so it's useless as an indoctrination tool. You know the rags are on to this because youtubers are their direct competition and not because they care about disclosure, and no slightly non-negative of GG will set right the bullshit they have spewed for 2 years now.

There's a lot of information you can get from something like Pokemon Go, and there's a lot of ways to abuse it.

Niantic, Nintendo, and Google are all making a giant heat map of business's popularity. They also open up marketing possibilities by letting real world locations pay more to have better pokemon, which causes more people to go there.

I don't know if I buy the surveillance angle. There's a lot of bullshit and noise to sift through, though it's possible it'd be able to catch events on camera that normally aren't. But storing all that video would be a huge burden in cost and technology, I don't think they'd do that. But selling location information, charging ransoms to physical locations for good pokemon, having Google use people's locations to improve their maps, I can see all of that. And none of that is really good. Specially since as far as Google is concerned, they just got a shit ton of people to improve their map accuracy while not even having them be aware they're doing it.

I had an absolutely delicious schadenfreude experience last week.

I had a (way more than I realised) progressive friend that said gamergate was the worst thing he'd ever seen when it first happened, that everyone supporting it was a misogynist. When I told him I supported it, it basically derailed our friendship and he stopped wanting to meet up, claiming I was a massive sexist.

Anyway, he's been chilling out a lot more in the last 6 months and, while still progressive, isn't quite as rabid as he was. We've gotten back on speaking terms, hanging out, that kind of thing. He is a complete comic book and film autist, and since we regularly watch movies before going out for beers, when the trailer first came out for the ghostbusters movie I flagged it to him and he promptly ripped it to shreds on various social media for legitimate reasons.

He then got absolutely fucking hammered by his progressive friends for being a sexist asshole. He was completely and utterly shocked, based on his responses, at the accusations.

I just forwarded him an email he sent me 2 weeks after gamergate exploded that was practically a verbatim copy of what his own friends were saying to him and said 'Not nice is it? #Bustergate'

I still have quite the shit eating grin on my face.
