How about the puzzles being that the original devices are broken beyond repair, but thanks to things being so generally broken, you're finding new paths through that weren't supposed to be there according to the original ancient design? Like, that ancient door mechanism is just not gonna work, but if you find a way to force it, the whole crumbling wall it's built in might fall apart instead.
