Since my early days gaming I've always had a fetish for the M1 Garand, but that's clearly not a practical weapon. Not for home, and especially not personal defense. on to more realistric options, the ruger american is the best you can do for a budget boltgun (the previous go-to for budget boltguns was savage arms, but they and springfeld dont support the 2nd amendment so they are persona non grata). it comes in 308, which is a big scary caliber and probably what you think you want, but 243, while not as scary looking, will kill a deer just as dead, and wont kick quite as hard.
