McGowan said the charges were trumped up as a means to silence her, because she had refused to accept disgraced media mogul Harvey Weinstein’s “hush money.”

The actress has been one of the leading voices against sexual harassment in Hollywood, and claims Weinstein raped her. A $100,000 settlement regarding an incident in 1997 is a matter of public record, but her attorney claims she was approached with an offer of $1 million to sign a non-disclosure agreement that would have prevented her from talking about Weinstein at all. McGowan’s also not the first Hollywood accuser to find her self in legal troubles after making public accusations. A short time after making the claim, he was charged with a drug-related offense in Louisiana.
