this is one of the few cartoons that pulled that off
Screaming and Yelling: the Show
Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy desperately wanted to be this show.
Not just because of the VA?
ll, it was one of the shows that at the time tried to be scary and gross and succeeded, so no problems with that. It's right there with anything of the time.
Billy and Mandy came first, though, isn't it?
Billy and Mandy came first, though, isn't it?
"Grim and Evil" came first, but Billy and Mandy as a stand-alone show came after Zim, and the longer Zim ran, the more Billy and Mandy's humor changed to become more obnoxious and loud.
Fairly Odd Parents started at the same time as Invader Zim
It's still running to this day
Billy and Mandy's humor changed to become more obnoxious and loud.
I think that had more to do with flanderization than a desire to emulate Zim
aren't they still making ZIM comics?
what are those like?
They're hit and miss.
mfw Fairly Oddparents basically killed Invader Zim because guess where all the ratings went towards
IZ was great, too bad about the "fanbase" it gathered. but if you don't take the retards that surrounded it into consideration, the show itself was pretty funny.
"Dib's Wonderful Life of Doom" was a masterpiece.
Anything more known about the movie? Besides it exists.
Billy and Mandy Big Boogey Adventure was a good final episode of the show. It is a shame they continued like 2 more seasons after it.
B&MBBA aired halfway through the last season though
Wasn't there a whole special about jeff the spider and shit a year after? I thought that was part of the final season
I thought shit like Dark Harvest and a crackdown on violent overtones due to 9/11 was what killed Invader Zim.
It was Bloody Gir.
season 6, the last season, premiered in October 2006. Big Boogey Adventure came out in March 2007. Wrath of the Spider Queen was in July. The series ended in November.
Ed Edd n Eddy from like season 3/4
Ed just yelled stupid shit and destroyed stuff
Edd was flanderized into spouting long words and nagging
Eddy screaming at the others or jewing out
I remember when both came out in early 2001
I remember liking the zim pilot but afterwards realized how shit the main series was.
fairly oddparents had more than 2 or 3 good episodes.
Right, so I've heard a lot of people really like this show. What about it is so good?
the atmosphere, the art style, the music, the dark tone, some of the humor when it's not simply GIR being "so randumb"
A few things:
The artstyle is completely unique. I've never seen another show construct characters like this show did and it worked.
The humor is as dark as you can get on Nick, or completely nuts and silly.
The tone is utterly cynical, which is worlds away from other Nick shows at the time.
Every shot looks great, in a dirty indie comic book kind of way.
The fact that the fairy show premiered the same day as Zim and is SILL GOING makes me a little relieved the show got cancelled before it jumped the shark. Which based on the leaked scripts it may have. Skoodge moving into Zim's place and Minimoose are two indications of that.
Maxwell Atoms did a special called Underfist starring Jeff, Skarr, Hoss and Irwin that could have led to a spin-off series but didn't.
To be fair, underfist was shit. The drawing style felt weird compared to Billy and Mandy itself, it tried too hard, like later appearances of Hector Con Carne, where the brain and the bear just looked weird. I guess once they dropped the more simple style, they fucked up.
The fact that the fairy show premiered the same day as Zim and is SILL GOING
ell, to be fair, through the thread people insist Fairly Odd Parents continue to this day, when they had a 1 year break. That was enough to fuck up everything since the changed the whole team. not like the latest seasons weren't running out of idea, though.
Man, can't believe both series premiered the same day.
If IZ is screaming and yelling, could Daggett (same VA) from The Angry Beavers be considered Spoot-ing and Dam-ing?
minimoose was great though
he should have been there from the beginning
"Does Zim need two sidekicks?"
I see. Thanks.
Isn't that how all fandoms work.
oh fuck, this show is way more annoying in english i've only ever seen the latin american version
"let's take all the comic relief characters and make an entire show about them! The kids will love it!"
another terrible idea courtesy of Stu Snyder
Oh wow, how did I ever like Gir as a kid.
He's got his moments, but they depend on him actually interacting with other characters instead of screeching like a retard. Battle of the Planets is the one I think he's the best in, but that's also a 10/10 episode overall.
Does anyone want me to dump the episodes?
Same, tbh fam
I always found Gir annoying and although I found him cool in some episodes it made me mad that 80% of the times Zim fails his plans because of him. As a kid I always wondered why the fuck he didn't just replace the damn thing with a competent one, although I think he did in one episode.
Go ahead, please dump the best ones first.
Jhonen Vasquez always intended that Gir be hated
Because you're stupid
Gir was deliberately written to be as insufferable and annoying as possible. Partly as a parody of typical "mascot" bullshit, and partly to antagonize what he though would be his audience.
Naturally, his audience of teenagers, who lack standards and sense, ended up loving him.
Congratulations on improving as a person.
Fuck you, The Big Picture Show was top notch.
Jhonen Vasquez hates Gir, all his other characters, all his cartoons and comics, all his fans, and himself.
Which is why he agreed to do the revivals?
Daddy's gotta eat.
well, given his work so far, I wouldn't blame him. His 2 biggest works , IZ and JTHM, created or helped foster either complete edgelords, lolsorandumb teens or some inbetween of those 2. JTHM even has Jhonen fighting against his fans at some point because , in his eyes, the people who sent him letters were hillbilles, self-centered asses and insufferable goths. The only other time I've seen anyone shit on their fans like that was with DSP.
How about Ian Jones-Quartey and John Campbell?
You got a point there. But my point remains. Jhonen created not one , but 2 IPs that are to him what Creep is to Tom Yorke. And I've never seen Jhonen draw anything different from what you see in either of those 2, so I assume he _can't_ do something radically different to distance himself from those IPs. I can understand self-loathing under those conditions.
I read that it was because the producers found out about JTHM.(wikipedia)
First time hearing these theories got a link explaining either?

I'm rewatching the show in order and so far G&E and "season 1" aren't cutting it for me, when does it get to wacky AHTF-esque humor of doing random shit.
When you notice a change in the drawing style, a little more stylized. The first seasons are pretty weak, when the color is all weird.
Grim Adventures was better. Better porn too.
Makes me hate the spic even more now.
JTHM was what the guy was known for. Why would he have been hired to make a show in the first place if they didn't know about what he had previously done?
Perhaps one exec didn't like another exec bring him on?
