Since the old thread is gone I decided to create a new one and storytime the most recent issue. I can also storytime the old issues if you guys want.
Spider Man Renew your vows
So do you guys want me to do the old issues first or the new one?
There's no reason for this series to exist. Does Marvel just want to rub slat in the wound of how much they ruined Spider-Man?
I just finished compiling the recent Issue 8. I can storytime it if you guys want.
Alright then fam here we go.
Peter and MJ are so out of character in this series. Don't me started on the shared powers thing.
That's it for issue 8.
Holy crap MJ! All that to stop Mysterio he's a lower B class spidey villain with no real powers. She could have killed him.
I guess her motherly instincts overwhelmed her logic.
I like this series, but it annoys me that the only way people can think of for MJ to be "equal" to Peter is to give her superpowers. It'd be a lot cooler to me if she acted as tech support in a van nearby, and if their daughter gets hurt she just rushes in with a fucking gun
Yeah I feel that the Superman comics handle Lois in the "wife of superhero" role better than Mary Jane.
People wanted the Spider-Marriage back, so Marvel brought it back in a way that both fans and non-fans of the marriage would be happy. Seems like a perfectly logical thing to do, IMO.
Lois Lane doesn't need superpowers, though, half of her appeal to the feminist brigade that is her fanbase is that she's a normal career woman who gets to bitch out Superman without suffering the consequences for her shitty behavior.
Seems like a perfectly logical thing to do
Are you pretending to be dumb or do you really think this is something people are happy with? It's mediocre at the very best, and downright retarded at worst.
It'd be a lot cooler to me if she acted as tech support in a van nearby, and if their daughter gets hurt she just rushes in with a fucking gun
The whole 'MJ and their daughter gets involved in the crime-fighting" angle is fucking retarded. It seems like they're trying to do the same thing as Superdad, but this is Marvel and they manage to take alright ideas and make them stupid as fuck.
I kinda agree. And Marvel being Marvel has already made MJ one Punch Woman.
It just feels stupid.
MJ was meant to be part of Peter Parker's supporting cast, not part of Spiderman's teamup brigade. She doesn't work in the latter, unlike some of his other supporting cast.
she just rushes in with a fucking gun
Woah, user. Guns are for bad guys. Remember? The second amendment is not worldwide!
Am I the only one here happy Eddie Brock is probably still DED and that no one other than Osborn's MOM, probably intentionally, just set up a mervellous arc that yes, got some good tear-jerking potential but is going to end in some disappointing way?
mj having powers
They only had one kid
This kinda sucks
Thats the thing that Feminists really sadly don't get.
Here is a simple as punch MJ Girl Power Story:
One Day Spiderman doesn't return when investigating something in _
MJ Grabs a gun puts on a hockey mask and goes investigating
Clues, Beats up bad guys, meats friendly people
Find Spiderman in a bind
Mwahaha When I unlock the secret of your DNA spiderman, Il become a GOD!
She helps him out.
Facility begins to explode
Spidey helps out a bit but not fully as hes drugged
There. Sounds enjoyable enough to me. It reminds me how they turned the original story of a Girl that never gave up to find her young (Male) friend and traveled all across the world to save him, into frozen.
Powers don't necessarily make for a more enjoyable character. I wouldn't mind MJ becoming a Black Belt, learning tips and tricks, and being awesome support. Heck maybe she grabs a power gauntlet from a bad guy and uses it when appropriate.
Spiderman isn't the Fantastic 4. Oh wait, you removed the Fantastic 4 out of copyright bitterness.
The whole 'MJ and their daughter gets involved in the crime-fighting" angle is fucking retarded.
It makes sense for their daughter to be involved since she has superpowers. I don't think Peter could really bring himself to stop her, since she has the power therefore the responsibility. There's no way he didn't teach her that, and there's no way he would argue against it if she used that line. But MJ also being involved as another Spider-powered hero makes it a lot dumber. I would seriously expect MJ to make Peter agree that if their daughter was truly about to die, then the no-kill rule is off the table and she's busting in with mustard gas and an automatic rifle. She just seems like that type of mom. Making her be the exact same hero as Peter and their daughter really cheapens the character as a whole. She'd be better even if she was just the stay at home wife who was unconditionally supportive because she realizes how important crime fighting is to their family.
I actually got interested in this until I heard MJ and the daughter were fighting crime too
what is this, the incredibles?
I can see that appeal trips.
Still better than Slott's run.
owning a handgun
in new york
Even with all the times MJ has been kidnapped that's never going to be allowed.
Eh, I really hate all these attempts to "make the wife fight crime indirectly too", which is what you're doing.
It's not a "Fight crime indirectly" point.
It's a "Give a side character a plot and some development".
Fine, she grabs one of the Shockers gauntlets that Peter grabbed one time.
Which you can do without making MJ into some kind of fighter/gun-toting badass. It's fundamentally no different to what Marvel is doing by giving her superpowers.
Where did I say badass?
A vulnerable character that struggles the whole pathway is way more compelling then a quip spewing unstoppable baddass.
grabs hockey mask and fun, goes around beating up bad guys, investigating and saving Spidey
user, come on. Action Girl MJ with no powers is still effectively the same plot concept as Action Girl MJ with powers, only difference is one can sling webs and the other can't.
Um no. Your just so used to marvel style writing that you forgot that interesting female characters exist.
More then a mj plot its a "civilian gets involved" plot.
She wouldnt be kicking down doors and taking names. She would be sneaking around trying not to get detected. And the idea is of both a mystery and a one off story.
All this talk about whether MJ in action is good or bad reminds me of that time where she beat the shit out of Chameleon with a baseball bat.
Can we see a pic of that?
Fine, she grabs one of the Shockers gauntlets
Doesn't she need a suit for that so her bones doesn't break?
Probably. Maybe she steals one of Shockers suits or just uses a makeshift one. I know in the ultimate universe shocker just has the gloves and not a suit.
blindly obeying the law when the law is retarded
Criminals own handguns a-plenty in NYC because they don't care about the legal side of it. Makes sense that a chronic kidnapee might also say to hell with laws that force helplessness.
I'm not saying she should follow them, but how the hell is MJ finding the nigger selling hi-points out of his trunk?
Maybe she can buy them out of state?
The mesh up has potential. But they have to be willing to expose MJ as a far more inexperienced spider hero instead of being a near equal. That whole mole manbarc was fantastic. Even better at the end with the splash page of the family crashed out on the family couch. Neither family member was taking complete focus of the story and was far more a family outing from which is what they NEED to embrace to keep it from being a Super Dad clone.
The problem with having MJ fight crime at all is that she just doesn't have the background for it to come off as anything but forced and derivative. It just seems like a crutch to avoid treading the same ground as Spider-Girl.
you removed the Fantastic 4 out of copyright bitterness.
No. Marvel just canned their ongoing and benched the team after Hickman's Secret Wars in a transparent attempt to deny Fox's reboot publicity. The alternative was outright killing them but Hickman supposedly strongly objected to that, so everybody except Ben and Johnny are in limbo
attempt to deny Fox's reboot publicity
Well, that's sorta what I meant.
I'm sorry MJ and characters in general….But not everybody can be the main character. Spider Family is a whole lot weaker then Spiderman as a Story. Fantastic 4 is a great family story. Spiderman is Peter Parkers story.
MJ just can't be built up into the main cast without loosing something about her. It's like the equivalent of Character Communism. Because everybody has to be special and MC worthy nobody is.
Its the same problem I have with Harley Quinn. She is a sympathetic character because she's a patsy and kinda dumb. Some people find themselves drawn into those positions. But she's too weak to continuously carry stories on her own, and shes fucking insufferable quirky Grill deadpool Zero
