I just really hate it when things get way too popular and make it impossible to like. R&M was funny because it was funny, that's it. It had good jokes and seeing Rick be an irresponsible drunken asshole was funny. Then they tried and failed miserably to make it an actual plot with character development despite none of the writers having any clear idea how to do that, like in adventure time. It just devolves into melodrama and nihilistic pseudo-philosophy.

It's really annoying how much they've squandered their initial concept. Taking the magical science man and his plucky sidekick cliche, and turning it into an abusive relationship between a morally bankrupt alcholic and an emotionally unstable teenager who he uses for selfish gains, was genius. Stop ruining it.

Futurama at least had decent writing. It's clear that R&M's writers aren't fluent in the advanced aspects of literary theory (neither am I), which is fine for an episodic comedy show. I understand people wanting more plot in their cartoons, and the idea of taking a seemingly episodic comedy and slowly adding an overarching plot is awesome when done well (venture brothers, 12 oz mouse, gravity falls kind of). The problem is when the writers have no idea what they're doing and end up falling flat on their faces and ruining the entire show. The same thing happened with adventure time: they tried to add relationships, romances, and even a main villain, but they were all botched tremendously.
the moral of the story is to hire writers that are worth their salt if you actually want to have a plot, like with ATLA.

Rick and Morty was always an over hyped, okay show.

I probably wouldn't say it's wrong that this show can take itself too seriously, but I think it's pretty consistent with how on and off seriously it takes itself. I don't think the show betrays its tone by having a moment like this, and I don't think it was trying that hard. It was taking itself seriously enough for the characters to have a human moment, one that people might associate with deepness because of its relatability rather than that its complexity. "You've got issues with your existence? Nobody chooses to exist and a lot of what we deal with isn't really that big of a deal, so come and exist with me because I enjoy your existence." That's it. I found it endearing.
I find it a bit hypocritically pretentious trying to judge this scene on its level of deepness, complaining that the philosophical concepts brought up aren't deep enough and that only the plebeian juvenile public could appreciate something so basic.
