Yuri is a very good protag, both in terms of Tales and JRPGs in general (surprising amount of JRPG protags named Yuri are, really). He's got a really enjoyable personality, is established as a competent fighter, puts his money where his mouth is to uphold the "be thou for the people" sort of motto the Imperial Knights (which he used to be in) should uphold yet rarely do, and hates being given the beat around the bush treatment. And he outright murders people that the law will never punish, willing to bear the weight of doing evil unto evil to make the world better. All while generally being a snarker like Jade and professional level troll to boot. Main flaw is that he's a slight hypocrite and doesn't actually grow much as a character himself, but as one of the oldest Tales protags and having an entire prequel movie with his development, in the game he helps the rest of the cast develop.

He's also OP as fuck in combat for a physical fighter.

To be fair to Rita, it does take her a while to warm up to Yuri, namely due to the whole breaking and entering, accusing her of crimes, and waving his sword in her face. But First Strike shows she was still a violent, short tempered bitch when she was twelve. At least her embarrassed interactions with/about Estelle are cute, and Vesperia honestly (and refreshingly) isn't a JRPG that does much in the way of romance so there's not much of a "dude falls for bitch that beats the shit out of him" sort of stereotypes.

To be fair, Raven does tend to stick his foot clean through his mouth and down his throat, and does kind of get what he's asking for. Also the whole selling Estelle to Alexei thing which obviously isn't so easy to make amends for. And while I don't agree with the usual hatred towards Karol a lot of western fans seem to have, he does have moments of real immaturity (despite otherwise having a somewhat wise head on shoulders for his age) and should anticipate when to keep his mouth shut/not stand next to the "prickly cactus". At least he's usually just getting punched/smacked, whereas Rita is honestly a few steps away from stringing Raven up by his entrails.
