So finally people are turning on this gross trend. Its no secret they are designed right down to the animations to be habit forming. What surprises me is there are very clear addicts going into public panics over their "funpay minibuys" serotonin release fixes going away.
They claim "games need lockboxes to fund full content games" while neglecting to note that every good game that released in 2017 has no included them but all the trash like cawadoody and ass erect androgynous has them.
They get angry, irrational and scream that they aren't pachislot or gambling like any addict upset about losing their fix and are going full goy for companies like EA. Acting like they are a poor done to little guy operating at a loss to satisfying the entitled gabber goober gamer.
Do you know any of these addicts personally? I know of two that buy dozens of overwatch lockboxes each time a new skin event is up, they play maybe one game then dont touch it again till the next time where they do the same. Currently they are both having public meltdowns over their fix being taken away.
Lockboxes are kind of important tbh, I don't want any schmuck rummaging through my sensitive documents. Plus, especially the older ones tend to look really fancy. I have one with silken inlays in which I store the CPUs of PCs that died in the line of duty.
Josiah Davis
I used to have a steam friend who I played vidya with from time to time then the TF2 crate system hit and he became obsessed with them last I talked to him he spent most of his money on TF2 and overcuck loot boxes and admitted he rarely even played the games he just gambled on virtual shit.
William Moore
I have not seen a single person, in real life or online, lament the potential loss of the loot box concept. You're gonna have to provide some examples or screencaps to convince me they exist.
Dylan Evans
Honestly I never actually knew what the fuck crates for. I got them by the assloads in Tf2 and all I used them for was selling them for a few cents.
Logan King
I watched a video of totalbiscuit talking about lootboxes that popped up in related videos during the mwII lootbox score bullshit and he admitted to dropping a grand and like 400 dollars or some shit on a shitty harry potter mobile game. I don't know how anyone could spend shit like that on a mobile game.
Zachary Nguyen
I guess you could say he became cancerous.
Kevin Jenkins
i lost a fair ammount of cash opening tf2 and cs go boxes in the "hopes" of getting a rare item that will sell a lot on the market, ne ever again im doing this kind of shit and i regret spending the money, it really is an addiction and many people probably don't have the luck of getting out of it.
Gavin Baker
.
Kevin Sanchez
Lootboxes are just fine, fellow goyims.
Josiah Collins
I spent like 15 cumulative dollars on the TF2 store, maybe a third of that was lootbox.
Landon Jackson
Not lootboxes, but I know a guy who's spent nearly six grand buying TF2 and Dota 2 items. He hates the idea of confrontation, and by extension trading; he'd rather just shill out cash.
He's also a tranny and a huge fucking faggot who occasionally sends me pictures of novel 'this is going up my ass' shit.
Brandon Ramirez
I know a kid who's like 17 who loves this shit. Also a friend of mine who has a genuine gambling addiction. Lootboxes are chump change compared to the tens of thousands he's wasted on online gambling. He also has every hero skin unlocked for Leauge of Legends. I have no idea if that's normal or not as I don't play ASSFAGGOTS, but he says it cost him a ton of cash.
TBH these gambling addicts and skinnerbox worshiping sub-humans should stay the fuck out of video games and keep themselves relegated to sad online gambling like the impulse control lacking faggoon scum they are.
Julian Davis
Only the poor know the true value of money user.
Lincoln Ramirez
Why are you close enough friends with a tranny to the point he shows you the things he shoves up his butt?
Thomas Reyes
he remembers him from the time he was still human
Parker Myers

Jonathan Ramirez
They're called whales. They are similar to the people who spend massive amounts on mobile games; they are a small percentage of the total game's players, but they fund the whole thing because of their gambling addiction.
Carson Brooks
They are plenty of shills defending them in here
Aiden Richardson
Or gambling addicts.
Jace Thomas
Or money sluts. Just giving it out to practically anyone.
Nathaniel Morgan
All mobile game players.
Liam Thomas
Pretty much this. It's sad seeing how he turned out, and I want to change him back, but it's taxing and leaves me inebriated rather than happy.
Zachary Price
From which game are they taking lootboxes away?
Carson Powell
At least one of them was and it didn't have any loot boxes. Shame no one else seems to have played it.
Juan Barnes
Better those devs get the money than the shekels stay in TB's pockets.
Whales are a little bit different than gambling addicts. The main draw for them is buying their way to the top, they get their kick out of curbstomping people with their overpowered gear and masturbating to the sight of their name in the top ten of the ladder. Basically, even gambling addicts are better than whales.
Elijah Martinez
If the laws change and the US and EU ban lockboxes that means say goodbye to TF2 crates, Overwatch lootboxes, Destiny bright engrams, Hearthstone boosters, just about every "micropay funbuy" rng package that costs real money will be banned or require an 18 rating on the game.
I bet valve, ea and activision are all in heavy panic mode right now.
Hunter Powell
I played it man, the last 3ds purchase i'll ever make.
Joshua Stewart
At least EA did something right for once, by getting so greedy that they led to the end of this shit.
Julian Martinez
This might be a stupid question but what makes lootboxes lootboxes? Is it just the aspect that you need to spend money to open/buy them? Would a game with the same mechanic that only uses the in-game currency (that you can't buy) or keys that only drop in gameplay not count as lootboxes?
Tyler Russell
I bet everyone else is planning how to fuck EA over for screwing up so badly they're taking down everyone with them.
Is the game good?
Using real money to get a chance to, maybe, win a shitty jpeg.
Jaxon Jenkins
It had potential but too many stupid flaws, like how you constantly had to warp back to town to grab another partner since you could never cover every contextual "use character with power here to proceed" situation. And then the endgame showed up and was incredibly stupid with its worse-than-MMO-tier RNG grind, which soured me on the game a lot. I would probably have bought it if it wasn't for the number of terrible design decisions.
Xavier James
Are you really asking if every game with a treasure chest becomes gambling? only in greece
Eli Robinson
It is the best new ip on a nintendo console since Gold Sun. Its a fucking travesty so few played it since its made by the actual secret of mana team yet goys are screaming for the collectors edition of the mana remake with textures confirmed ripped from a SE mobage.

A faggot having money isn't better than supporting cancerous business practices. Besides, anyone involved in a lootbox shitheap doesn't deserve the money either. If he was throwing his money at good developers it would be one thing, but all he's doing is shifting money from one faggot to another while also helping keep microtransactions alive.
Josiah Hughes
Paypigs.
Thomas Hall
i hope that passes so much. it's really hard to take lootboxes lightly and they ruin so many gaming experiences. i've been playing battlerite recently and it's an insanely fun top-down hero brawler game but despite not giving a shit about lootboxes from the get-go i found myself kind of hoping i'd get something cool looking from them after opening a bunch. i hate that they have the ability to take away the focus from the game. this hasn't happened to me (not with this game at least) but you could end up grinding boxes instead of enjoying the game and it's a real shame when a game that's actually good does it. they just turn it into a tedious experience instead of a fun one.
Noah Sanders
You can't help some people. The people who buy lootboxes are either compulsive gamblers or more likely just reddit consumer cattle who buy whatever is on youtube/twitch.

How do you live like that? What is a "nest egg"? Is it college money or something? Allowance?

I haven't heard anybody defend lootboxes, but I've heard plenty of people saying they shouldn't be banned. I've had the same argument with my friend about Belgium's statements repeatedly. I have told him over and over that lootboxes violate their already existing laws but he keeps going back to his 'muh government intervention' stance. He doesn't get it.
Asher Edwards
He was into traps and shit so he was already down the path. I don't doubt that being around a bunch of them will mess with his head. His life though I guess.
I think they were pretty hands off with him until he started spending all his fucking money. A nest egg is savings that are meant to accumulate and eventually go toward something important, usually a house or a wedding or just put aside for emergencies. He basically spent his safety net on loot boxes in Overwatch.
Kayden Anderson
A wise man doubts himself, a fool tells himself it will all work out.

Wow. Life hasn't treated him well.

Reminder anyone who complains about lootboxes is a jellypoor commie who thinks the answer is MOAR GUBMINT REGLASHINS. It's actually hilarious seeing these hypocrites in action:
Stay poor, stay jelly. If you don't like it, don't play the game. Stop trying to get Big Brothers' foot even farther up our asses.
The really sad part is that there really are people like that out there.
Alexander Martin
No thats how the addicts think. They think a higher rating on lockbox games is 'da gubment gummin 2 take muh arms!'.
Kind of explains what kind of retard falls for the lockbox meme really i suppose.
Brayden Myers
I don't think it's a 'it'll be fine' type of case, I don't think he even wants a wife or car or house, he just wants to be a permaneet forever and live like he does now forever.
Nobody wants them banned, people want them restricted to 18+ games with clear indications that they have lootboxes in them. A child can't walk into a casino and start playing poker.
Definitely scummy on some machines but at least you got what you paid for - a chance to play the game. Plus you're talking pennies a go for arcade machines compared to the lowest tier lootboxes being around $2.00 to $2.50.
Ian Barnes
Anyone have that forum post of the scam citizen retard who blew all his families savings on ship jpgs and got a divorce? He said the exact same thing.
Landon Richardson
I know one. He was an avid Dota2 player who played Dota all the way back to WC3 versions. It was an occasional harmless fun at the beginning. Then the Compendium came, and then he was utterly disgusted by it, and said fuck it and walked away. Sworn to never touch any shovelwares with lootboxes again.
He was in the mirror. Now he is gone.
William Parker
I spent a thousand dollars on BDO before I quit

Lootboxes are a new form of gambling and people get adicted to it like they get adicted to poker, sports/race betting, slots, blackjack etc…
You wanna know what makes them adicted? read what makes people adicted to poker, its the same.
Anthony Ross
My friend plays league of legends all the time. In fact, it's the only game he plays. He even persuaded and succeeded in getting some of our mutual friends into playing League with him. Note that I tried to get our mutual friends to play some of my own favorite games, but they refused cause they were 'too old' or 'too hard'. They listened to the League friend for whatever reason. Here's the kicker: He buys riot points like it's going out of style. He buys riot points just to change his fucking name. Whenever a new skin comes out for one of the champions he mains, he buys it. Whenever a popular skin comes out for a new champion or a champion that is really OP for that meta, he buys the skin, even though I tell him that Riot is just going to do what they do every single time and nerf the hell outta them as soon as everyone is done buying the shitty ass skin. I tried to save him, I really did, but if it's one thing that is true, it is this: You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
On a related tangent, I was once kind of a lockbox addict on TF2. I only spent about 100 dollars in total over the many years of playing it, but I got tired of losing and ended up sharking little kids for their unusuals and selling them. I've gotten about 10 unusuals this way, totaling up to about $1000 so it wasn't that bad. I haven't sharked an unusual in so long, and I don't intend to go through the trouble of fucking with Steam's new retarded trading barriers.
Blake Lopez
Knew a friend that used his dead father's money on overcuck lootboxes on every seasonal update they had. Think about 20 bucks per update or more, I don't remember.
Gabriel Perez

Really all they have to do is add "content" to the process of opening the boxes, like a minigame or something, and suddenly it becomes and arcade machine. Add a leaderboard for your high CrateOpener Minigame score!
Matthew Reyes
Thats literally pachislot.
Landon Richardson
Obviously, single player oriented games or those with fire and forget multiplayer shouldn't need any kind of ongoing profits. They should be able to do everything they need to, including a reasonable number of patches post-release based solely on sales. It's the games that require indefinite support that need some way to fund it because no matter how many copies they sell that money will EVENTUALLY run out. While I could definitely argue that Overwatch isn't doing ENOUGH to support the game, I very much agree that in its ideal state it NEEDS some kind of constant revenue stream.
Overwatch's particular implementation of loot boxes is by far the least evil they could possibly be. Not only do they have no impact on gameplay but all of the items are very easy to obtain without spending anything extra at all. Because they use their "gambling" scheme to target retards they are able to make the most amount of money with the least amount of impact towards anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together. Ultimately this means the best possible game experience for everyone else, so in that vein I fully support their decision to use loot boxes as they have.
Disclaimer: This post not intended as an endorsement of Overwatch's gameplay nor Actibliz's allocations of funds for the game, only on their monetization scheme and its supposed impact.
Blake Adams
But pachislot is more based around luck, whereas I think user was referring to an actual game requiring skill
Zachary Rodriguez
The legal grey area is that the luck in pachislot IS skill.
Josiah White
To put that in perspective, let's compare it to two greater evils. One is what I assume the new battlefront game to be, where the exact same lootboxes, still obtainable through playing the game, contain very explicit "power items". The second is where those same power items are sold in an exclusive cash shop with no randomness and not available in the game at all.
One can clearly see how "non power" lootboxes are a lesser evil than "power" lootboxes. What might not be as clear is that even "power" lootboxes are a lesser evil than cash shop exclusive power. I would personally never play a game that sold power in ANY form, but for those who do it will always be better to have the opportunity to earn that power than not, no matter how convoluted the "earning" may be.
Kevin Jackson
The EU will never, ever take action over profitable practices. Gotta protect those jobs and job providers. Even when shit is proven to be harmful to public health, they give slaps on wrists or outright dismiss cases because private companies would take jerbs down with them. Still, the situation will have soured the image of the lootbox quite a bit. Just in time, too, with several companies starting to push "games as a service".
Brayden Wood
The big lockbox pushers arent EU jerbs. Its america pushing this cancer.
Brandon Wright
tbh I play overmeme not because I enjoy it but because I like the artstyle and the lootboxes trigger that genetic gambling addiction. I don't think I'm quite so bad in since I've only spent ~$20 on the initial purchase of the game and not a single cent on lootboxes. I may be an addict, but I think being a tightwad that would choose a single dollar over eternal happiness balances that out.
Isaac Smith
You might be right on this account. They did put some measures against privacy invading shit from america.
Nolan Fisher
I'd like to point out how older online games, prior to the invention of in-app purchases, continued to support their games.
First, we have the yearly release. In other words, they simply didn't. They would release a game, patch it a couple of times if you were lucky, and then just expect everyone to buy the next game. This is horrible for a couple of reasons. Not only did it means that fully sensible players needed to shell out another $50 every time, but it also meant dead games. This is a big part of the reason that many good or even great games are completely dead now. The companies moved on to the next in the series and abandoned the actually good one. Sometimes the next game fails as well, and then you just have a dead series.
Second you have the expansion/map pack release. This is very similar to the yearly, but it keeps players in ostensibly the same game. Unfortunately, it segregates the (likely dwindling) playerbase, until eventually the game is no longer able to get enough players in one place to sustain itself. The new maps are often unplayable (because not enough people have the packs) and the old ones have no support, so the game dies.
Third, you have the subscription plan. For keeping a game going this is by far the best old option. It keeps everything concentrated into one game and ostensibly keeps the playerbase together. It's also the most expensive for the average user, costing a hundred or more dollars per year just to play the game.
If loot boxes selling cosmetic-only items available through normal gameplay are able to fund games in place of these above strategies, than by all means let's have more lootboxes.
Landon Sanders
Subscription has always been the best way to fund online games.
Xavier Jackson
It's the most expensive.
Would you rather spend $150 a year, or spend nothing but you can buy some extra cosmetic shit you can still get for free anyway?
Parker Jenkins
I'd rather pay one small price to get all the content. It's not like you have to pay for a whole year if you only play for a month or two.
Jaxson Gray
False dichotomy
Brandon Roberts
I have a friend who has spent over $100 on Yu-Gi-Oh dual links card packs. Kind of regret that he told me that because now I don't have any respect him.
I have 16/21 Zelda amiibo and that is pretty much as close as I get. It isn't blind boxing, I know exactly what I am getting. I originally started getting them before I had any nintendo device capable of using them just because I wanted little nintendo brand figures of my favorite series. The friend in question started my collection despite me A) not having a device that uses them and B) me despising amiibos as I know how easily I would fall into my current collector mentality.
Colton Hill
Isn't that thread bullshit to begin with? There is just some toothless law proposal that even if it goes through wont do what you want it to do.
Logan Hall
The one question about lootboxes and stuff like this I have is why do people get so butt blasted about hearthstone. Literally every other game I can understand. Card games have existed for ever buying booster packs to get more cards. Is it because those were trading card games and the jews at blizz don't let you trade cards?
Isaiah Edwards
That game went to the second worst form of micropay, PROOVING that it wasn't able to sustain itself on initial purchases alone.
Imagine WoW, and for some reason imagine you like playing WoW. Now, imagine that instead of both subscriptions and expansions, everything after the initial purchase is 100% free. Same content, but free. Now, imagine that they sold lootboxes, and in those lootboxes was a selection of random items from a given set of raids or zones, except that all of those items have no stats. The items are being sold for transmog purposes, except they are exact duplicates of items that you can get anyway (which happen to be on random drops to begin with). Oh, and the art team gets like 10x the funding and talent because that's where all the revenue comes from, but nothing else in the game suffers.
I can't imagine how anyone would say that this proposed system is not preferable to the one that already exists.
Landon Thompson
Most people get pretty butt blasted at real TCGs as well. In either case they are P2W games first.
Isaiah Ross
Except that isn't borne out in reality. F2P MMOs are always shit compared to subscription ones.

I predict TF2 would have kept its very same longevity if it had thrown the microtransactions idea away and kept with the quarterly major update instead.

Jeremiah Brooks
Ladies and gentlemen, the lootbox consumer.
Adam Garcia
I have a few normalfag friends who buy trash like PUBG and overwatch, but only one ever bought lootboxes (at lease to my knowledge) and he has a history of gambling addiction in his family and hates microtransactions. Where are these people who actually liked them?
Lincoln Nelson
No MMO yet has used the "cosmetic only lootbox" concept that Overwatch currently uses. They use the traditional "pay to make it more fun" approach, which by definition means the game has to suck to start with.
The only game I can compare cosmetic lootboxes to is overwatch, because to the best of my knowledge nothing else uses them (yet). Whether you like overwatch or not, I would not say that any aspect of the quality suffers because of the lootboxes.
Brayden Perez
you need to be 18 to post here, user.

I play blade and soul and it's really bad, like $60 million dollars per quarter bad. Retards on forums encourage the weak willed to buy more and more boxes. One bought $500 worth just to 'show droprates'. Playing autistically all day for months on end will barely let you get into most content and the children still defend it as not really pay2win.

I have never heard anyone refer to lootboxes as “lockboxes” until now. Is it just a different name that some games use? Is it a halfchan/reddit term?
Hunter Myers
No, but I know several "regular" video game addicts. They're all co-workers recently out of high school or in their early 20's. Sometimes they like to complain about their lack of money, even though they work full time. It's easy to tell it's because they spend most, if not almost all, of their spare income on video games, because of how much they fucking talk about them. It's as if video games are the only things they do outside of work. I overheard one of them recently say he only has $30 in his bank account, and he hasn't had more than $100 in that bank account for several months, because he spends all of his money on video games and MTG.
I just don't know. How hard is it to understand the concept of having no money being an easy and fast ticket to Shit Land? These are grown-ass adults too. They don't come off as the kind of people who are fast learners either. They'll probably have these garbage spending habits for years to come.
Alexander Morris
How does people even spend so much they only have $30 in their bank account? What do they do if they someday have an extra bill to pay? Do they just take a loan in the bank thinking that debt will just magically disappear?
Easton Martinez
The thing is, even for lootbox addicts, there are ways to plan it out for free.
The best example out there is the lootbox mobage The Battle Cats. Who had a 3DS release which kept the lootbox aspect while making it free, by handing out what wad the paid secondary resource more or less every 3 battles and by unlocking of the different character banners by advancing through the story chapters, making you play the game as it was while removing the paid aspect of the lootboxes.
It shows that games can have such systems without even needing people to cash money like good goys. And it further shows how cancerous paid lootboxes can be.
Carter Johnson
Probably. My parents have bad spending habits for all of their life. Not as bad as "I never have more than three figures in my account" bad, but more like "I will retire with bills to pay and a life insurance claim are my children's only inheritance" bad. Their reasoning is thinking their retirement funds will magically make their money problems go away, so I don't think it's a stretch to think people more incompetent than will think bank loans magically go away.
William Powell

tbh Overwatch and Dota (and TF2 to a lesser extent since you still unlock weapons in a shitty way) are the least problematic of these systems. Shit like the new Star Wards Battlefront is where it becomes a problem.

I don't know any but i can tell you something equally as degenerate: being addicted to sales Great part of my friends now found a job and all they do with their spare money is eat fancy and buy games on discount, no matter how small. And it doesn't matter how many arguments we had, i can't shake some sense into them.
Xavier Bennett
user, I don't know how to break this to you but physical releases are pretty much a thing of the past. Yes, they are idiots for buying games they are never going to play, but they would have been just as big idiots if they had bought physical copies of those games.
David Sanders
That can't be right. Except for pc, why would anyone prefer a digital game to a physical copy?
Brayden Moore
I want my dick to not lose its way towards Ryuko's vagina.
Dominic Torres
I didn't say I preferred them, I'm just saying that no one makes physical releases anymore, certainly not on the PC. It's cheaper for them while they still get to Jew it as much as before, if not more.
Eli Wright
I guess, but as stated my friends buy digital on console.
Nathaniel Cook
what's his name again?

I actually know one. He never admits to being trapped in the psychological feedback loop these lootbox games create and always says shit like he's "only playing the game for the gameplay" or that he "doesn't care about the lootboxes" as though you can separate the game from them when they're designed from the ground up around the lootbox business model. Yet he doesn't play a single game that doesn't include them and would claim to not miss them if they were gone (which is a lie).

Could be worse, I guess. One of my friends said that he spends hundreds of dollars at strip clubs. He has rich parents.
Some games use "lockbox" within the text of the game. I played Champions Online with some anons and the game was throwing "rave lockboxes" at me every minute. Like hell I'm getting the fucking keys, though. Most jewish thing ever. What's next, does the lock have a chance of breaking because its rusty? But look, buy the magic box grease and up your open rate to 100%! Mark my words, that shit will happen soon.

It's more common than you'd think for League of ASSFAGGOTS players to own every skin for their waifu, but owning EVERY SKIN? What the fuck? That's thousands of bucks down the drain. Most players might spend a few bucks getting their one skin, and many players get the free skins from events and chests earned from being good at the game, but owning that many skins is fucking insane.
Jaxon Hall
So, is buying games bad or only paying for cosmetics? Should I pirate whenever possible?
Ryan Wilson
The whole loot box issue was addressed quite well by Jon Blow on his twitter feed. At least, I think he addressed it well. Even if you don't like him or twitter, I'd suggest giving it a read. twitter.com/Jonathan_Blow/status/930208107921276928 tl;dr: Loot boxes are scummy, but they're still around because people won't stop buying them. They only won't be a problem once the consumer pool at large recognizes the problem they pose and actively avoids buying loot boxes.
Easton Baker
I never said anything about pirating - I just don't spend that much money on vidya. Just buy a fun game and play it till you get your money's worth. If you seem to be going through games too quickly just start looking up some free ones like DF, SS13, Nethack, etc, or even try making your own. Pirating should just be a last-resort - just saved for special occasions like emulation where you can't find an actual copy or /radcorp/ gamenight. People say "I only buy games when I want to support the dev, and I just pirate anything else" - this is a good ideology to follow but ideally you should only be playing games that you like (and hence you want to support) so therefore no plundering is required. Although I can understand situations where the dev doesn't align with your political views or something, I've never encountered a game I really wanted to play that was made by someone with adverse politics. (For example, I pirated subnatica but got bored a few hours in, if they had a demo I would've pretty much had the same experience)

No, not that I'm aware anyhow. I have a friend who I suspect is in deep with MTX, but he knows it's shameful and downplays his past purchases always meters his outrage to be proportional to the other people's reactions.
The thing is, he used to make really good money when he lived in the city, and he's used to just throwing it around as a status symbol on occasion - but more to the point, he almost died a number of years back in a car accident and as a result just wants to have as good a time as he's still breathing and views money as a transitory method to ease things along that path. So if a scheister company like EA comes along and puts a bunch of MTX paywalls between him and a good time, he's more liable to just grease the wheels and pay up to keep resistance to his fun at a minimum.
Also, being fairly well off for so long has kind of numbed him to micropayments in general. He'll see "$1.00" or "$0.50" and it registers as such a minuscule amount to him that it's not even like spending actual money. He'd brag about wiping his ass on Grant's face, so it never really hits him how much he's spending until the bill at the end of the month gets tallied up. Ended up going without a cell-phone for a month one time because he went apeshit buying ringtones and didn't realize how much he was actually spending until he got a bill for like fifteen hundred bucks.
I know he spent a bunch of cash on Mass Effect 3's multiplayer trying to get that high-end sniper rifle. And he says he doesn't buy lootboxes anymore, since he doesn't have the money to burn these days after moving back to sticks for some peace and quiet. But I think he's just bullshitting me because he knows I think they're retarded. We don't really play anymore since he's brand loyal to Xbox while I shifted focus back to being pretty much PC only.

That's already the case, idiot. It's the very tiny minority that gets suckered into this shit and throws down thousands of dollars. It was the same thing with gambling before it got legislated; only a small fraction did that shit, but because it was so damaging it got restricted. Lootboxes will need the same thing happen.

I don't think anything is necessarily wrong with Nintendo, they made some great games back in the 90s and early 2000s. I am also not entirely against digital distribution of older titles. I bought Black, the Criterion game digitally when Xbox One started supporting original games and I'd rebuy Silent Hill 2 if they could be fucked to re-release it in a playable state.
Nathan Howard
No, but if my 10-year-old cousin was given free reign over money, I'm sure he'd be one. He was begging for me to get him CS:GO simply because there's skins. No amount of explaining how and why skins are retarded would do, as all the cool jewtubers are obsessed with them, and therefore he must be too. Thankfully, his parents are smart enough that they don't buy him this shit. I just wish they were smart enough to keep that little shit away from the internet as well.

Aren't most games still Peer to Peer? I know they host matchmaking servers, but people's systems end up doing pretty much all of the heavy lifting. Very few games have dedicated servers.
Reminder that Sonyfags will happily pay their monthly pound of flesh because "the online service is so much better than it was on the PS3" ~ despite the fact that it's the same exact goddamned system except now they're paying more, their monthly games only work so long as you keep paying out, and their shit is full of microtransactions.
Holy fuck goys, at least Microsoft makes sure their first party shit at the very least has dedicated servers.

My cousin spends his time getting cs:go skins and betting them in gambling sites where you bet your steam inventory. In my country gambling is illegal but internationally gambling through steam and webpages is something the police is too tech illiterate to be aware of or even be capable to block in the country. I don't know exactly how much but I know he somehow gets my grandmother to give him thousands of dollars at a time which he burns through, and my grandmother likes money more than things it buys.
Josiah Edwards
some us states do this with actual gambling, or used to. I once went to a casino that had no slot machines, only video poker. the laws at the time specified so the game required you to mark certain cards to keep and others to redraw. wow suddenly it's a game of skill. so this means they will at best add a fig leaf minigame on the lootboxes. as said earlier, pachinko is a game of "skill" because how you turn the knob determines how fast the ball starts out. never mind that it's all random once it starts hitting pegs.
Isaac Lopez
You're correct about the "games of skill" laws, but I think gaming companies would wise up to avoid the gray area of casino games and make it something more like a traditional arcade game.

When I played Black Desert Online after the western servers released, they of course held back on all their promises to lessen the cash shop impact and made sure it was scummy as possible. One of the common complaints was the rng-based dye system which of course gave you incentive to keep buying dye until you got the colors and amounts you wanted. Some faggot whale later gloated on the forums stating he "beat the dye system rng", how did he do it, you ask? He spent over $1000 on dye.

Id say in general we are living in a time where you can get hundreds of hours of solid entertainment from a game studio not made of cancer for under 20 bucks. Why do people even play big name games? I find myself having trouble justifying 90% of those purchases when I can get the same experience with maybe slightly worse graphics and a satisfying harder, or engaging experience.

Do these guys live with their parents? It just doesn't seem like they could survive with that little money if something unexpected was to hit them financially.
I don't why but you know how their is that cliche cartoon plot of a character becomes super rich and then blows it all through carelessness by the end of the episode? That somehow had an effect on me as a kid and I got scared of spending my money so I just hoard my money in my bank account, I could easily buy lots of things at full price, but always wait for sales and never get into trends, even rarely buying games at launch (also helped by the fact that Nintendo games rarely had any special pre-order bonus incentives up until the late Wii era).
Admittedly any company with a massive collection of unused IP's will have the same problem. What Nintendo's major issue is, Why there IP's don't get sequels because they NEED to do something different from the previous game hypocritical design stance" leading to series rotting because they can't think of ideas while also being hypocrites about other (better selling) IP's. Eg: >Punch Out got brought back on the Wii because of motion controls and even Balance Board, which ended up being optional to a standard button using sideways Wiimote control scheme.

They're paying because Sony told them to.
That's literally it. It's a form of soft-extortion, where they break arguably the most in-demand feature of their games unless they pay monthly so that nothing happens to break their multiplayer.
Some would say they're paying for overall quality of service which has gone up - but it really hasn't, and all of that shit (like cloud saves) is more than paid for by Sony's digital store from which they rake in 40% of every sale (10% royalty fee + 30% distribution fee).
Some would say the free games, but they're not free since you have to pay to access them - and even then, you can only play them for as long as your paying your online fee. What that really is - is a way in which Sony can leverage a customers want to play Destiny 2 online and transmute that in a guaranteed monthly sale.
Some would also say they get special discounts, but if you pay even casual attention to the prices of games across various markets, you'll notice that by and large all the sales Sony offers are just routine publisher sales from which they then mark-up the price of games 10~20%. If you pay for PS+, then that markup goes away, and you're just paying the publisher's price. If you don't pay for PS+, and you buy a game digitally, then that 10-20% markup goes to make up for the lost revenue of you not paying to play games online.
Aside from a few exceptions here and there, the "PS+ Exclusive Sale" price is basically what your average faggot on Steam pays.
It's weird, you try to explain it to these chucklefucks, and they will just stare at you with glassy empty eyes and proclaim… "Yeah, but I want those notFree Games, I want those sales, and I want to play online - so it's money well spent to me."

Aiden Cook
That's probably the strangest fucking thing about lootboxes and how insidious they are. I know plenty of people who buy them on a regular basis but none of them would miss lootboxes if they went away. Imagine being able to take or leave something but still spending money on it anyways.
Juan Gray
well at least in the case of Overwatch they are free and unlocked with play. They're all just cosmetic shit.
Sure you can BUY them if you want. And I'm sure plenty of people do, especially during events where certain cosmetics are only available, but they're not game changing things.
Is it that they exist at all that's the problem? Because honestly I see them like a "vice tax". You really have to be more into the costumes of the characters (in this case) more than the game itself and if that's the case then go ahead and blow your money.
Well if they're done right (just cosmetics, unlockable in game anyway) then people can take them or leave them and the psychology of why they would buy them is simply because they want their shiny new costume IMMEDIATELY and don't want to really earn it through play. I know people like this and I asked them about it and they said "Well I have a job and have money so I don't have to spend all that time." which I really can't argue against and especially since it's their money, they do what they want with it. But if the concept all together vanished these same people wouldn't mind and I'll let you in on a little secret why. It's a convenience that they indulge in because it is there.
Imagine if you had a fast food restaurant that was on your way home from work and so every couple of nights on your drive home you might go there to get your dinner. It's food you really wouldn't ever go out of your way from but since it is right there on your way home you go for it. Now imagine if the fast food location moves just across the street making you have to do an extra turn or two to, maybe wait at an extra light to get to on your way home from work. Well..unless you're really craving it you're not going to even bother. That's how lootboxes work as a service. it's fast food.
Cameron Carter
No, a store-front is acceptable provided the items being offered are directly sold with a clear and set price (no gambling fuckery) and so long as the store is only accessible from the main menu.
This "earn currency in-game" bullshit to get the content for "free" just shits up games with progression tiers and MMO grinds that don't need to be there and aren't wanted. The only acceptable form of progression tier is skill ranking to be used in matchmaking players of the same relative skill level.
I use ad-blocker because I hate pop-up advertisements shitting up my internet. Why the fuck would I want log-in advertisements, storefronts, and loyalty reward programs shoved in my face between matches of a game?
If they insist on having Lootboxes - there needs to be a few ground-rules. First - they are only just barely excusable in free-to-play games. This bullshit of lootboxes in $60 retail games has got to go. Secondly, there needs to be a purchase cap in place. If you download and play the game for free, a game that would otherwise cost $60, then once you reach $120~150 lifetime MTX purchases - then all content from there on out should be unlocked and open to access. That still allows scummy publishers to siphon off twice a game's value from the retards, while also giving the retards some measure of protection from their own stupidity. It might actually also help increase sales of MTX because there's an end-goal in sight for dumb people to try to reach. They're not just throwing wads of cash down a bottomless money hole.
Joseph Sullivan
This sounds like you're trying to save people from themselves. This is something I can't cosign. If people want to indulge in their addictions to the point of financial ruin then that is THEIR choice.
Do you blame the cigarette and alcohol companies for making a product people want to buy? do you blame the stores for selling it to people in whatever quantities they are willing to buy?
Austin Clark
I don't give a fuck about addicts and their monkeys. But when their addiction starts fucking up my games, then yeah I have a problem. If it means saving them from themselves, then that's just an unintended side-effect.

Yeah but it's illegal to give these things to children. All these shitty gambling games are marketing to children and played mostly by children.
Ayden Nelson
Fair point. And in the case of something like Battlefront 2 I can see just how fucked up that is.

Online gambling is already banned in most places. Lootboxes are just a loophole that has been ignored until now.
Easton Wright
The issue is that it's disgustingly addictive. This is one of the few cases where legislation needs to fix the problem, because the consumers will gamble their fucking lives away.
Jayden Williams
nope. If that was it why isn't beer, cigarettes, sugar, and all forms of advertising banned?
Oliver Williams
Yes, video poker is equivalent, and is also literal gambling. The fallacy you are falling into is that this is literal gambling in every way. This isn't "virtual gambling" (that would be like the casinos in the Pokemon games). It's real gambling with real money. It's incredibly addictive which is why it's supposed to be illegal for children to partake, because kids are really fucking prone to addiction.
Connor Ramirez
Who's arguing that they should be banned? I'm arguing that it is gambling and should be regarded as such, with the games receiving an appropriate AO rating as well. Parents don't sign their kids up for online casinos either.
Leo Rodriguez
it's either gambling or it's not.
so you need to be 18 to use a gumball machine?
Joseph Cox
I don't get how some one becomes a lootbox addict. any game i played with lootboxes only supplied cosmetic stuff, don't get what you want? oh well it won't actually help you play better, carry on.
Ayden Foster
This is gambling. I didn't say otherwise. You are exchanging real world money for a rare potential to hit a "jackpot" for a big financial/status gain. It's engineered to facilitate addiction and have people continually dump more and more money into it. There are other things that are also gambling that get by because it's much harder to dump all your money into them. Pokemon card booster packs are gambling, but without the promised potential of massive gain (I think the most valuable card you can get from a booster card these days is like $10); most people get those just to try to complete their collection. Crane machines (and those other arcade gambling machines) are also gambling, but they only really enable you to dump a couple bucks into them a minute, so at worst you can drop about $100 in an hour.
You are a retard if you are comparing gumball machines to gambling. That doesn't even make sense as an analogy; it's a straight-up purchase. Put money in, get purchased item. This is gambling in every way that online poker with real money is gambling.
I think it's mostly kids and naive people who haven't been hit by this stuff before. Most kids get a taste of gambling from a crane machine, trading card game booster packs, or some video game gambling (like the aformentioned casino in the old Pokemon games) and get a taste for the disappointment and the reality that gambling is always a loser's game before they can get addicted. If you don't get that early taste of disappointment before you hit something resembling real gambling, you get addicted before you had the reality of it knocked into you. You see the same rationalizations with these people as you do with gambling addicts "It's my money, who cares how I spend it", "It's more for the fun than the chance of a win", and "I'm not like those other losers, I know how to really actually game the system!" After they go into massive amounts of debt, it's "I fucked it up that once, but this time I'll get it".
Christian Bell
If they are, why are they not regulated as such? And gumball machines are quite applicable to most of these lootboxes, excluding being able to sell skins on steam. You put money in, you are guaranteed a skin/gumball, but the flavor is entirely random.
Charles Morris
My friends from high school when TF2 was extremely popular. They've stopped by now, but they were crazy about the hats. The hat thing was some times a laugh like the story of the guy who made 15k from TF2 hats, but later I found they legitimately cared about trading and the drops.
Connor Gray
I just said why. They don't facilitate addiction or massive losses in the same way. Did you even read the post you're responding to?
Not even close. I also explained this. There isn't the possibility of a massive windfall of value and you also can't easily dump huge amounts of money into it at once. Gumball machines would be applicable if they cost $1 a piece, you could buy them 1, 10, or 100 at a time, and you had a 1/10000 chance of getting an ultra-rare gumball worth $5000 among other rare valuable things. Are you really arguing that companies should have carte blanche to market electronic scratch tickets to kids? There is literally no reason that this shouldn't be regulated the same way online casinos and scratch tickets are. You have yet to provide an argument that makes any sense. Your "gumball" analogy would only be apt if the lootboxes only gave out virtual goods that all had the exact same value, in which case I'd agree that it isn't gambling. That piece, unfortunately for your line of logic, is the central aspect that makes it gambling in the first place.
Hudson Torres
user, the only lootboxes that have been subject to regulation and investigation so far, at least to my knowledge, are the ones found in overwatch and battlefield 2. In both of these games, there is no way to trade items you earn from the boxes for real money unless you wholesale sell your account. If you read my post I addressed the steam marketplace, that is real gambling in every sense of the word. But in these other games, you put money in, you get something random and it's yours. You don't profit off of it, you just hope it's what you wanted.
Jaxson Morgan
Wow it's like I'm really on 4chan!
Zachary Walker
It's still real money for a random chance at real value, and it's still a system that intentionally fosters building an addiction to dumping more and more cash into it for chance at massive gain. If it was virtual money or something, sure, tons of games have done it. It's a system where you put in real money to have a slim chance at getting something incredibly rare. How is that anything but gambling? You don't have to be shooting for financial profit to make it gambling. The intention is to trick children who don't know better into getting addicted to dumping money into it. I'm baffled that anybody is defending this, or that anybody thinks it's anything but gambling.
Grayson Gutierrez
I already just said there is no value to be won.
Ayden Campbell
"value" doesn't just mean "monetary worth". If there was "no value", nobody would put any money into it at all. Nobody spends money on something that is valueless.
Michael Carter
Don't tell that to universities.
Blake Wilson
Someone should tell that to all the people that bought ship jpegs for SC.
Daniel Powell
Using your retarded definition of value now expands gambling to everything with random chance and a prize.
Jeremiah Bennett
If you ask me, every cosmetic DLC or microtransaction is worthless because that content is already on someone's computer, its just that the game in question doesn't let them equip it or whatever on official servers.
Ultimately everyone assigns value to an object differently.
Cooper Ross
No, it expands gambling to everything where you put in real money to get a random chance at a high-valued prize in a way that doesn't self-limit the speed at which you can put money into it. If I pull in a literal definition: Again, how is this not gambling?
All "value" really means from an economics perspective is just comparative importance or worth of something. It's usually expressed in units of money, but it doesn't necessarily imply fluidity (the ability to quickly exchange a good for money). It is certainly subjective.
Liam Flores
Well dick ass, according to you all prizes are high valued, so there are no longer stakes as you'll get something of "high value" guaranteed. Something I value greatly you may not value at all. See what happens when you expand it too much?
Luke Perez
Well that's fucked up. Why do some think that sharking is okay?
Zachary Hill
My girlfriend plays Overwatch and buys about $50 of boxes every event. I think she hit $100 with the last Halloween event because she really wanted the cowboy's new skin. I find the whole practice so disgusting (especially the ones you have to pay to open, or the ones that can have multiple "qualities" of an item so even if you get the one you want, you can still be fucked over) that I refuse to touch them.
Dylan Davis
overwatch is annoyingly vile in that you can't just buy the skin you like. Sure DLC skins are pretty kikey but at least you just get the fucking skin you want and don't have to keep buying boxes
Wyatt Wright
You get coins from duplicates, and you can buy the ones you want with those coins.
Noah Smith
You can buy with ingame credits but I guess they're a real pain in the ass to get because of how the loot system works. She badgered me into getting it too but I barely play. The skill ceiling is just way too low for me to really enjoy it when I grew up skipping school to play Quake and Unreal Tournament online all day. From what I understand of the loot system, it's "technically" free but it's rigged so that you'll probaby never get what you want without buying boxes, and they put in new time-limited items, on average, every other month. And you'll definitely never get what you want out of those items without buying boxes.

Just… consoleserfs don't try to reason them
Kevin Moore
I never said that, you dunce. Are you really completely unaware of what "subjective" or "importance" means? Value of something can be subjective and comparatively important without being able to sell it; in fact, it has to be in order for anybody to want it in the first place. It seems like your entire game here is taking the things I'm saying, stretching them beyond their reasonable premise into the point where it makes no sense, and then claiming that I'm the one your own retarded extrapolations are coming from.
Yes, welcome to Economics 101. Comparative value, subjective value, and opportunity cost are real considerations, but none of those are actually important here. I only brought them up because you seem to think that nothing has value unless it can be directly exchanged for literal cash.
Even so, you seem more obsessed with the base definition of the word (that you still somehow can't seem to understand despite a dictionary definition in front of you) and less interested with the point at hand: It's a system that is built to attract children and build addiction to dumping real money for a minuscule chance at some valuable prize. Whether you want to consider it congruent to the definition of "gambling" or not is inconsequential, honestly, because it's a system that is engineered to cultivate a gambling addiction in kids either way, and does so with real money. Kids shouldn't be exposed to a system built to build gambling addictions for very fucking obvious reasons. If you can't see this, you're really beyond my ability to dumb this down to you.
Isaiah Cruz
paltry amounts of coin, and what i noticed from when i played it a bit is that the limited time skins are way expensive so you aren't likely to have that amount of coins from casually playing the game
Andrew Wilson
You are stressing how value is subjective, while still maintaining it needs to be regulated. You cannot regulate something that is subjective you nonce.
And furthermore, you argument of "think of the children" is fucking dumb. These games are all T and above, they aren't for children, and in the end it's up to the parents to tell their kids to not be fucking retards.
Brandon Robinson
My nephew(6) got addicted to gambling on these for like a year. There is never even some satisfactory result possible. It's either something kid's okay with then it ends up collecting dust on the shelves, or it's some crap and we're got a tantrum.
Good thing it's over now since school is started. And I was talking to her mother few times not to buy it.
Jordan Flores
Yes you can. The value of literally everything relative to everything else is subjective. We use money is an intermediary because it's convenient and because bartering doesn't work in the real world, but it isn't necessary to the concept of value. "money" isn't some basic force of the universe, and surprisingly, you can apply laws to things that aren't sold for money.
This isn't some generic "think of the children" shit, you dumbass. You could apply that to cigarettes being illegal to sell to minors. There is a reason it is illegal to foster dangerous addictions in kids. The entire argument here is that children should not be gambling. You'll have to try harder than simply comparing me to some soccer mom when your own logic falls apart.
T rating is 13 and up. That is children.
It's also up to the parents to tell kids not to smoke cigarettes, it doesn't mean it shouldn't be illegal. My entire argument is that the rating should be AO for games that encompass real gambling. Gambling is supposed to be restricted to 18+, and lootboxes have been circumventing that despite being gambling in every sense of the word. My entire argument is that the ratings don't align.
Is this "simulated gambling" or is this "gambling with real currency"?
Andrew Mitchell
Can't agree with that. Part of the sinister quality of lootboxes is they're tricking you into rolling the dice for a high value item which comes from the lootbox's wide variance in item worth. Most adults don't have the self control to stop themselves, which is why conditioning kids into it is even more underhanded.
Unless I'm old and now kinder eggs can have a 1% chance of having a $25 toy in them or something. I sure hope not.
Brayden Morris
No, not in this case. We all know money has no real worth, but use it for the reasons you mention. But what you get from lootboxes have no real value by any standard, they are infinite and digital. The only value any court could assign them is as intellectual property.
No, you fucking couldn't. We regulate drugs and alcohol not because it's addictive, but because it is harmful to your health. It's the same shit as a child proof cap on pharmaceuticals.
At 13 you have enough awareness and control of yourself to not be a child. You're a minor, you can make decisions, you can buy things for yourself.
Again, it's only illegal because it's bad for your health. No one cares about it being addictive. You can vape as a minor, and it's the same addictive shit, but because it doesn't destroy your body at the same rate tobacco and alcohol does minors are free to do so.
I maintain it's simulated. CS:GO, TF2, everything on the steam marketplace, that shit has monetary value assigned to it, it would be easy to get that in court and label it as gambling, but the others are not, what you win is entirely worthless no matter how much you, or I, or anyone else values.
Xavier Garcia
I almost spent 50 dollars on csgo keys. That shit is dangerous.
The thing that attracts me to loot boxes is the chance of finding a rare item to sell to buy games. I don't buy keys anymore
Colton Lewis
Vaping fluid with nicotine is illegal for minors you fucking retard.
Blake Parker
Cause the health effects of nicotine itself are still debated. What about caffeine? It's just as habit forming and has no form of regulation.
Robert Robinson
Caffeine isn't anywhere near as addictive, and no, the health effects of nicotine are well-understood. Stop talking out of your ass and actually do the minimal research for the points you're making. It's more like the legality of something like gambling, because it is gambling.
Lincoln Baker
Nah fag scientificamerican.com/article/is-nicotine-all-bad/ According to this article, nicotine is about as bad as caffeine and only still regulated alone because of the connection to smoking.
Ryan Parker
This reminds me Something tells me that people who spend money on lockboxes and gambling addicts did not have something like this happen to them when they were young.
Juan Martin
Man, it took me a while to understand the insanity behind the CS:GO lootboxes.
>"How nice of them to include this bonus content!"
Then I went back to not using Steam. But speaking of this kind of shit, here's something that I am still ashamed of more than a decade later: I once spent my M$ points on the horse armor.
Michael Edwards
The way I see it, I'm doing them a favor. It's a learning experience and the money is better in my capable hands, anyway.
Josiah Ross
To the person/people in this thread saying, "X, Y, and Z aren't regulated, so why should lootboxes be regulated?"
Why, exactly, do I need to campaign for everything else to be regulated to have one thing regulated? In what fucking universe do I need to group every possible alike past and future object to get one thing regulated? That's idiotic fucking reasoning.
I know lootboxes, and I want them regulated. If people who know TCGs want them regulated, they can argue for that. And if this dumbass wants gumball machines regulated, he can damn well argue for that.

You spend some coins, you get chance of getting $RNG worth of coins back… yeah gambling. And I'm not sure but those season figurines of hard plastic probably worth more than the kinder egg, or at least similar toys do.
Even if they DID cost the same, it's not the case for kids. So they end up developing same addiction.
Every jpeg with some numbers is the same. Your own logic doesn't apply here.
Lincoln White
You could be on to something user, on a similar note I remember hearing about schools removing playground equipment or even stopping outside recess over the past few years (to prevent lawsuits from child injuries). Now supposedly this may actually harm a child mental and physical health as they won't develop proper risk assessment skills from playing on the equipment. Having no exposure to other random elements like gumball machine and Kinder's (banned in the US still?) as mentioned by other user's would also lower exposure to random elements for a child. Maybe America has unintentionally raised the current generation to lack of risk assessment in their youth when it comes to spending money? As a kid, every time I got a Kinder it was a gift, so i was always grateful and the toys seemed pretty decent (especially the ones you assembled) but it helped when you weren't "aiming" to get something, when now it seems like they licensed the toys and the kids what a particular toy.
Evan Myers
I don't think you know what an addiction is, user…
Joseph Jones
addiction starts as a choice, but very quickly becomes a mental disease that the person cannot control.
Mason Lee
Let's regulate all RPG games too while we're at it. Their random mechanics are abusive because they make people addicted to continue to play to get those random drops, sucking precious hours from their lives. This is especially dangerous for children who become addicted to games with random item drops. We must think of the children. We must ban or at least strongly regulate all RPGs, and maybe add a government tax onto them to disencentivize people from buying them. People will think twice if they are forced to pay $120 for that new RPG with random item drops, and then maybe that price is only good for only so many hours of government allowed game time. Finally gamers will become productive members of society instead of becoming losers who would rather play video games all day.
Daniel Lewis
I knew one or two people who got lost in the early days of TF2 crates, but I haven't spoken to them in years since meeting them by happenstance in a MARIO KART 24/7 all crits low grav server. Also,
Nathaniel Wright
but holy shit, what the fuck how the hell can you get that bad

Jesus he can't even spend 5 minuted to sort them. You know how many sources there are for load order examples for nearly every mod out there? And that's only 1 greentext out of all that shit. Fuck man I could get angry at this guy for hours.

flip the fucking table and tell him to cut that shit out. its that simple.

Just tell him the more amiibos he buys the less of a chance he will get a girlfriend. If that doesn't work, tell him he could have saved hundreds of dollars just getting a copy of the chip and putting the data on it. If the money argument doesn't work, just say he has shit taste and show him better. While the last option is the best, it also takes the longest.
