Default iron sight

Why is it ever since Bethesda's Terminator Future Shock came out in 1995, iron sight stopped becoming the default sight for FPS games? Even when hip firing, humans in real life position their gun in the middle of their eye sight.

Because gun porn

Because if it's off to the side it doesn't take up the center of the screen.

Then just position it at the very bottom of the screen, like in Wolfenstein 3D. Also, I had no problem playing brutal doom and brutal wolf 3d without crosshair.

JUST BUY THE FUCKING GAME GOY, YOU DON'T OWN NOTHING!

What nigger?

? ????? ?? ?? ?

if you're firing from the hip, that means the weapon isn't shouldered. That is you're free handing it. If you have it shouldered that doesn't mean you're looking down the sights. This thread is fucking retarded.

But you still horizontally position the gun in the middle of your eye sight, and therefore the iron sight is still in the middle.

It looks weird unless you've got good 2d sprites. It can work in 3D, just don't show the character's arms and make sure the gun is symetrical and has nothing on top.

gotta show the cool weapon model otherwise, all those manhours put in are hard to spot when all you can see is the barrel.
more games should have transparent/invisible weapon model, especially the bigger weapons

you have two eyes you fucking morane

...

when you're shooting, you're basically a cyclops. Unless you train yourself, you usually shoot with one eye closed. That's why it makes me giggle when people bitch about games lacking depth perception making iron sights useless, as if the use of sights wasn't specifically to compensate for the lack of depth the second eye being closed caused.

The only times I shoot with both eyes open are handguns and optics like red dots. If you're using a handgun defensively you don't give a shit about the rear sight, you line your front sight to your target, that's the important part. And red dots are exceedingly easy to fire with both eyes open so why bother closing one?

And?

Holy shit! Where did you learn to shoot such shitty practices are allowed?

Unless you're hip firing, shooting with 1 eye closed is easier. It turns our 3D perception into 2D.

It's more natural, but it's also piss easy to learn to do it right with even the slightest practice. It only makes sense if the player character hasn't been trained, but then the player character should ND himself to death when he touches a gun in that case.

...

Don't blame me, I love brutal doom.

And yet they manage to make the models big enough to take in a thrid of the screen.

This. That's the most stupid shit a lot of FPS games do.

I will never understand why some of you anons don't like the guns to have realistic model sizes.
The whole point of a first person shooter is to shoot with a gun. And if you're playing a FPS it means you also love guns. And if you love guns then you also love staring at them and notice all the little details on them.

So why is it bad when a game makes an accurate sized weapon model? It's the only way it should be done.

because, as somebody with hunting experience and combat training, you don't walk around with the gun shouldered all the time. but almost no first-person games actually lower the gun during idle periods, or have the option for you to do so. so a smaller weapon model is preferable since realistically speaking even with the weapon shouldered you're not losing 1/3 of your peripheral vision

Because I love guns, but I'm not THAT autistic. Besides, that looks more like shoulder aiming than hip aiming.

So you never hold a gun like in those pictures? Alright user.

Also the first is a perfect example of dumbassery. You don't hold a rifle like that in front of your fuck face when you're rest it in. It makes no fucking sense to have it like that in front of your face either.

What if we're missing one crucial detail? What if all FPS protagonists are actually horribly malformed when we're using them?

...

Because sometimes a gun can take up 30% of the screen.

I love shooting things in video games, preferably with silly and imaginative weaponry. Not everyone is a /k/ autist.

You just said the point of an FPS is to stare at the weapon model and notice details. I'm not sure if I can adequately describe how retarded you seem.

...

If I recall, there were several games that had that as a default sight after Terminator was released; games like, Disruptor, Rebel Moon Rising, Outlaws. I think it's less of realism versus the rapid development of better graphics and design and wanting to show them off/do the best that you can with them.

It's called aiming down your sights, retard.

1. Humans don't have eyes on their crotch
2. If you're giving guns to species other than humans, please stop

Realism =/= fun
No matter what realismfags say, this is the truth.
Fun is achieved with good gameplay, good gameplay comes naturally from the amount of viable choices you can do in the game.
Some people think that realism correlates to more choices, but most of the time it doesn't. In most cases realism interferes with the choices you have in the game by unbalancing them, and making just one option viable.

Realism in the cancer that killed FPSes, not consoles.

Because you don't hold the gun in the center of your chest.

Nofuns faggots that never used a real gun confirmed. Even a fucking nerf gun would let you know you're retarded.

Why?

...

If your sights are directly center, either you're a mutant capable of shouldering your rifle directly under your neck and seeing the sights from there, or you're not shooting both eyes open.

...

The FAMAS is a bit of an odd duck in that in some FPS games it's an above-average gun balanced by the fact its fat handguard takes up so much screen space.

Unless you're playing with a VR headset or 3d glasses, your character technically is a cyclops.

Have you ever tried hip firing in real life?

It's pretty creepy how Terminator was the pioneer of every modern FPS feature such as full 3D graphics, grenade button, default mouselook, semi open world levels, and gun positioning at the right side of the screen, yet it suddenly disappeared from history without trace. Not even Bethesda remembers that game anymore.

Surely if you're using a scope or sights you're going one-eyed, otherwise you can shoot like a nigger I suppose.

Everyone else notice Doomguy is left handed?

We've been playing a devil all along, dude is essentially a TKing throughout.

because its a really bad game and deserves to be forgotten.

He actually switches between right-handed and left-handed depending on the weapon.

heh, still valve's last good game

There's different kinds of realism. A lot of devs think running out of stamina after running for 5 seconds is realistic but it's not realistic or fun. It's obviously not realistic to jump 6 feet into the air but it's usually fun. A lot of people would find it frustrating to have every gun use the correct type of ammo but it's realistic and fun tbh if you're as autistic as i am

To the average videogame developer, that is realistic for them.

Same reason why isometric view become the dominant method of presentation for RTSs and city building sims.

Part of good game design is presenting the gameworld in a way where you get a clear idea of what it is you're supposed to be looking at.

You can't really tell what a building is supposed to be when you're looking at it top down, and you can't really tell what a weapon is supposed to be if you're looking at it directly from behind.

Pick one.

If you carry like 30 kilos like an average soldier, it's realistic. Stalker SoC's stamina system is the most realistic one in video games.
