Eve Burst Error is great so far. Sad thing is the translated version is the one with no h-scenes. There are 3 main problems besides that. You play as two different characters who observe the story from different perspectives. That's cool and all, but the game only has 6 save slots and if you use a save slot for one character it overwrites the save for the other. I'm going to have to redo a part of the story because of that. The translation is alright when it wants to be but completely half-assed most of the time. The story explicitly takes place in Japan but there are constant pop culture references to things like the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the OJ Simpson trial. Some times the character says a line and the text only shows ellipses FE Fates style. It isn't butchered because of SJW types, it's just lazily thrown together. Finally the main problem I have is that this is a fairly linear story being told in an adventure game format. Some of the things you have to do to trigger the next plot point are beyond retarded. It is pretty straightforward near the beginning of the story but all too soon you will be forced to backtrack through every area and investigate everything along the way multiple times. Once I had to go to an empty detective agency and investigate the surroundings about 4-5 times for my character to conclude that yes, it is indeed abandoned. This triggers a character in a different part of town showing up at a bar. The bit about the abandoned detective agency is almost wholly irrelevant to the story and should just be a nice little detail if you decide to be thorough instead of a barrier to advancing the story. It can be a real pain to slog through at times but I really like the mystery story and would recommend it to anyone who can tolerate ADV interfaces. If you speak moon rune go for the original PC-98 version for lewds.

Comfy VN based on a city where it is alwasy raining, people go to the world reknown music school there to get better at singing/insturments/etc, Has a pretty good twist at the end. With all descriptions of visual elements put in as written text you might end up with a read the size of a novel for some of them.

Too shonen for me, when they are trying to be funny it isn't (they rely too much on stereotypes and they repeat too much to be funny for the fourht time) and when trying to be awesome , they arent because as and they rely on stuff like momoyo which is just a DBZ character whitout muslcess or stuff like "the white unit won even though they were encircled and outnumbered cuz they were more powerfull" (which is the kind of thought that made them lose the war) it's the ploit is too light and at the same time too long, probably the only flag is that is too long for being too light.

Tsukihime immediately comes to mind. It's the proto-Fate/Stay Night. There's a lot of interlap between the two and it's written by the same person.

It has H-scenes but they're more like comedy scenes. You'll know what I mean when you get to them.

Play Nitroplus stuff. They were beginner stuff (in the sense they were translated very early compared to other stuff) but they are also some of the best stuff in the genre.

Muv-Luv truly is the thinking man's VN

In the Muv-Luv hatesquad's defense, Muv-Luv is a case of extremes.
The things it does well, it does fucking well. The general story, the character development, the drama, the sudden horror, romantic development, character depth, all of that stuff is fucking rock solid.
Unfortunately, the things it does poorly, it does fucking horribly. The infodumps. The fucking "Play two entire visual novels (one of which isn't even in the same setting) in order to understand what the fuck is going on". The fucking infodumps which definitely deserve to be listed twice in the cons. These things make the game fucking unbearable when you're clicking through them for upwards of an hour.

The only true flaw of Muv Luv is that Muv Luv Alt gets kinda predictable at the end. Everything else is a fucking ride.

Pacing ain't a problem, past the first game.

Are you serious? Yeah, most VNs are slow paced, but Muv-Luv takes it to a whole new level. They'll spend hours talking in circles insead of getting on and doing something.
The first part that I really found hard to get through was that scene in Unlimited where Takeru and Meiya have to get that old lady off the mountain. All they need to do is make a quick descision but it spends like a fucking hour talking about philosophical bullshit that's not even well thought out, it's just repeating itself over and over.
So they sit there for the whole day while the volcano is erupting around them because neither of them is able to make a simple descision, and it ends up nearly getting them both killed. And the worst part is neither of them learns anything.

Fair enough but in that case I'd ask that something like Gyakuten Saiban should be on the list.

On a side note, Otoko Dogeza Jigoku (OMGWTFOTL) definitely needs to be on the list. Its absurd comedy stands to this day.

Pheonix Wright really is a beginner game, it's also more of a game than a visual novel, the story is super-light and only serves to enhance the gameplay (i.e. the courthouse).

I really enjoy Fate/Extella especially the meta-textual "Player vs Mastermind" theme of you - the player - technically jumping timelines to stop the villain, even if it's not really implied in the story but the rewriting was terrible and he's just such a hack when it comes to almost everything he's done recently.

Anyone here plays Tiers to Tiara 2? It's a pretty hard TRPG/VN (assuming you play on hard). It's about a Prince who had his father and kingdom crush by an empire due to a betrayal by a high ranking officer. Under the Empire's draconian rule, the Prince pretends to be retarded for several years hoping the Empire would fuck off after realizing he's no threat and has no intention to oppose them. However, due to temples being destroyed, the Goddess comes down to investigate what's happening. She gets captured by a zealot official from the Empire and he decides to sacrifice her to be a complete cunt. This sets Hamil off and, after taking back the town, starts his campaign against the Empire. Essentially it's Fire Emblem 8.

I enjoy the challenge of this game, the story, music, and characters. But one thing I really feel that hampers it is the need for anime tropes when they didn't even use much of them at the prologue. Hell, the prologue was really strong without them. The main villain (the woman who betrayed your father) is cunning and intimidating. Hamil is not a cunt or overly emotional but level headed most of the time and blood thirsty for the Empire's head. None of this "If you kill him, you'll be just like him!" bullshit. Lots of the characters do start with some tropes but have some nice development. But damn it would be great if it didn't feel so much like a anime.

Gameplay wise, it's a mix between Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem. Instead of having a weapon triangle, you have an elemental one and every character has their own natural element. There are actually 2 triangles though. Humans and animals follow elements of fire, wind, earth, and water while gods, demons, and aberrations follow the holy, dark, and astral. Following this grants extra damage and accuracy like in Fire Emblem. But unlike Fire Emblem, I don't think it's a base number like +/-2 damage and 15 accuracy. I think your damage and accuracy go up by a certain percentage so this makes this mechanic viable through the whole game.

Another mechanic I like is how characters occupy spaces in front of them and to their sides. This makes it so characters can walk into that space, but not past it so human walls are a much more viable strategy. Some enemies may ignore this though but they're rare. You can also freely pass by people who have their backs to you so it's very important on how you space out your team to protect the squishy people on your team.

Then there's the chain stock system where you use meter to double attack or buff skills to give them new attributes or damage. Some spells gain splash damage, some allow you to use them and move at the same time, while some just get mad damage. Meanwhile the 2 MCs have their own devil trigger where they turn into Gods for 3 turns. But on the fourth turn, all their stats go to 1 and they must be protected because nearly anyone can one shot them. Making it a real double edged sword.

Every mission has a submission too. Like one where you must kill an OP boss who is 20 levels above you with end game spells. It's possible on the first playthrough too. I found out how to do it when I killed myself on accident.

As much as I like anime, sometimes being so traditional to anime hampers the way stories can flow. Reading something like 2001 Nights was a breath of fresh air but it seems to take a lot from western comics, but in a good way.

I really wish this game was on PC. Aquaplus should really bring more of their games to PC. I bet this game would make a good buck on Steam, as much as I hate using Steam. I also want Aquapazza as well.

Forgot to mention that on every turn, any character with that element will gain a stat boost. For that reason, people who are in the smaller elemental triangle will gain boosts more often, but are more likely to encounter enemies that are strong/weak against them. So you need to plan around who to kill first or else a buffed orc may one shot your mage or completely cripple your tank. On hard mode, I find mages are your go-to killing machines while the melee characters are made to slow down and soften enemy advances.

The original PC version of F/HA had no voice acting IIRC, same as the original F/SN PC version.
Most of the people that play F/SN these days end up downloading the original PC version with the PS2 voices patched in, which is why the H scenes aren't voiced. I don't know if anyone has bothered patching voices into HA yet.

I've only played Ulyana's route along with the good and bad normal routes so far. Wasn't a big fan of the character art, but the background CGs and the overall story made up for it. That game is comfy as hell.

I wasn't even that mad about not getting H-material for Ulyana. The other characters' moralfaggotry was believable and it didn't feel like the game was preaching to me.

They really were going hard trying to scoop up any fan group on Fuwa for awhile, haven't been there since this happened so idk what it's like now. Still be interested in translating, but fucking hell you have to watch out for places like them even though it's better than getting a C&D.
