Pyre

Supergiant's newest game about mythical 3v3 handball and conversation simulation released a couple days ago. I haven't felt interested in it myself, so I was wondering if any anons here had played it. It looked like a big departure from the gameplay of their other two games, which makes sense; I remember when Transistor was released and they made it clear they didn't want to to isometric action games with Logan Cunningham narration for the rest of their careers.

I can't help but be slightly worried, though, that this one may mean they've gone a bit off the deep end. I don't mean to sound paranoid, but when the game asks you what you should be called at the beginning, your options are He, She, or They. Not a huge cause for alarm, but a red flag if I've ever seen once, hence the thread. I'm also concerned they may have taken the opportunity to have a large roster of characters to mean they let their hipster friends design half of them instead of letting Jen Zee work her magic.

As simple/flawed as Bastion and Transistor were, I liked them decently and I'd hate to see Pyre be a step down for the sake of stepping differently.

I'd gladly tell you, but my GPU couldn't run it as it's OpenGL 4.2 only, It does look nice, but I'd keep a real wary eye on their next game.

imagine having politics play such a large part in your life that would refuse a game you might have been interested in because of a pronoun
i've never played this and don't care to, just adding my 2 cents on you being rump rustled

Also, They haven't learned anything about PC Optimization since their last two games, so it's pretty buggy right now, judging by the forums.

I'm not interested in 3v3 handball/Oregon Trail in the first place, but I liked Supergiant's previous titles so I hope this one is also good so they can continue to make games I may be interested in. The pronoun bullshit is more often than not the indicator of social justice lunacy, hamfisted politics, and bad gameplay.

What I'm hoping is that any out-there stuff is at least somewhat justfied, like the stronk female character in my OP pic: she looks like an awful character design to justify being stronk, but she's actually an ogre/giant, so it makes sense for her to stand 2ft taller than the human men.

Shit, really? Bastion and Transistor worked on my machine so I didn't know that was a problem for them. That's a shame.

If the developer has to pander to a specific audience, it's a very clear indicator that:

a.) They need attention and the game won't stand on its own merits
b.) The group they're pandering to don't play games and don't know what makes it good/fun
c.) Further criticism will likely involve listening to said groups and removing actually fun features
d.) The community forums will be a hugbox

Didn't Transistor have some questionable elements to it?

Think about it like this: the average person wouldn't think to ask about pronouns because that shit is retarded. Instead, these guys thought about and decided it was important enough to include. Now while it doesn't intrude on the game itself, it does give us some insight into the developers' thought processes, specifically that they either hold Marxist views or let Marxist ideas influence their decisions. Neither of those things are ok.

Oh, and following what said, if SocJus see this kind of signalling and are attracted to this game/forum/developer than the community surrounding this game will rapidly go downhill as the authoritarian leftist mentality takes over.

Supergiant did relocate to San Fran after Bastion released. I'm hoping they're not getting overly pozzed, since they do seem to care a lot about making a genuine product.
Unfortunately, a friend told me Pyre is pretty boring. It didn't look very appealing to me since the reveal. At least the soundtrack is really good, but that's par for the course.

It had one character that was implied to be a tranny, I think.

If you give them money, don't be surprised if they use it against you. Play other games instead.

Principles matter, not content.

Two of the four villains were a gay couple, but it was only stated in a character profile. The narrator didn't comment on it, which was a pretty clear message of "eh, we don't give a shit" and given their relationship, it almost seemed to me as though the subservient man had become attracted to his boss because he was his boss, rather than because of progressive politics from some lunatic on staff. And I know this isn't true, but it could also have been a super deep cover redpill warning about the evils of metropolitan life and homosexuality.

Not tranny, lesbian. I don't know the full story, either.

Very much doubt it, since they were trying to make the villains kinda sympathetic but misguided.

Ok, so literally nothing.

I had completely forgotten about her. The only people/functions I can remember are the motorcycle racer, the public trickster/stuntman, and the Bastion reference. I had forgotten so many of the broad cast of characters I didn't think about what that means for their new game focusing on a broad cast of characters, but that is poor.

...

They weren't all that Important to the game though, just neat backstory that you can read if you wanna know what was happening up to when shit hit the fan.

This is the one I meant.

Well xir is certainly offended and zam will not stand for this! Flam will be uninstalling this pirated propaganda material

That's true. I suppose I'm worried because you can tell your weaseldogferret companion whether or not to shave his moustache within a week of meeting him and he'll take you advice without a second thought. I just hope that isn't the extent of their character interaction.

I would like to believe the X is there because he's a transhumanist and doesn't give a shit about himself, but I get the sinking feeling there's a deeper reason.

deebly_goncerned.jpg

Which one was that?

No matter what pronouns you pick you get a male protagonist, they just refer to him differently, again this is highly offensive to xir

Olmarq.
It's subtle, but it's there.

Absolutely problematic.

Huh, I never caught this. Cool.

Their previous games were shit so I wasn't planning on getting this one anyway, but now I am certainly not.

...

I've only played a few hours of it and I like it so far but there's this weird bug that turned me into a girl after I had already chosen to be a guy.

Well Transistor was basically about a post-scarcity society falling apart through their focus on hedonism and art and shit so a high concentration of gays and whatnot actually makes some sense for the story.

Report it to the devs. they keep having issues with the text chat like that Unless you pirated the game, then you're gonna have to wait for someone to upload the update.

This is like the SJWs that think The Witcher games/books are sexist because they contain sexism. If anything Transistor didn't have enough LGBT shit considering the direction this world is going in.

Transistor was apparently rushed, and given how ultimately shallow the experience was at release (no reason to move beyond a dominant strategy, which itself was necessary because the difficulty modifiers were extremely restrictive), I see little reason to assume the writing of all things was that polished.

Really, are you even listening to yourself? When was the last time you saw any piece of media equate trannies, gays, etc. to cultural decline? Ideas like that are either outdated or dangerous these days.

I try to make it a rule to avoid two things when it comes to games. Games with lots of non cutscene dialogue that keeps you from the actual gameplay and anything with even a hint of blatant SJW mentality. This has both. I like it's aesthetic and idea enough but it's simply something I can't see myself ever liking or playing.

The writing doesn't have to be polished for you to assume that, and you don't have to assume that the developers did it to equate trannies with the decline of society. This is just obvious shit, a future civilization will almost certainly have LGBT stuff to a greater extent than our own.

If you think its unfair to assume that the devs have the mental capaibility of figuring that a cyberpunk society should have trannies then why is it fair to assume they put them in to push identity politics?

Because the latter is much more stupid than the former.

It was. Sorry you have shit taste.

Guess I'm not the target audience for it (^:

okay

Into the trash it goes.

You certainly are.

...

You're mistaking evolution for "positive" selection. Evolution is still occurring, we're just directing it so we become failed organisms.

This isn't how cultural attitudes develop at all. The gay fad is just that, a fad. Within thirty years nobody will care.

Good point, I won't phrase it that way in the future.

Within 30 years faggots will be executed while homosex will be natural behavior to show dominance over inferior men.

I finished the game last night, and if you're worried about progresivism then I'd say there's less than what's in Transistor. The only pronoun nonsense is the ability to make the player character neutral, and there aren't any gays or trannies.

Is it good though? That's the important question.

...

I enjoyed it a lot. The gameplay starts out too easy but it ramped up nicely as enemy teams got more skills and talismans, plus you can fine-tune it with with difficulty modifiers and a more conventional difficulty slider. There's a big fat book of worldbuilding and backstory if you're into that sort of thing. The plot has a whole lot of variables depending on the choices you make and how well you play, so there's plenty of replayability if you want to explore that. Each character has their own side-story, and it's impossible to see them all in one playthrough. The music is Darren Korb.

Is that loss?

Any bugs/performance issues?

I wish, but it looks like an edit to me.

Disgusting. Pick the one with lowest Hope rating.

What's he been up to?

On PS4 I would rarely get massive frame drops for no discernible reason. It only happened a couple times, but I'll probably wait for a patch before doing a second playthrough.

You sound like a goon.

there were gays and "gender: X" people in Transistor too, you should retroactively start to hate it now

Well, you cant blame them for that. Bastion was a home run consumer wise. Hipsters could like it cause it was indie and had art design that was fairly with the times and more experienced people could enjoy the fairly nice gameplay and story. (However simplistic those two components were) Transistor, I felt was a bit lacking in some regards but I'd still say the game really good and I loved semi turn based combat. I can looks past the broader gender selection if the game play and concept are as strong as Transistor and Bastion, which so far it looks like it. Has anyone gotten anytime in with it?

Nah nah nah

Maybe the buddhists have the right idea and it's just best not to want anything from humanity or reality.

I'm looking forward to it, but no idea whether it's gonna be good or not.

Guilty as charged. I saw some screenshots and the idea flew into my head, then refused to leave.

Not much, apparently. I saw an interview with him once about a year after Bastion's release where he mentioned he wanted to be more than just a VA, but it doesn't seem like his career went anywhere after Bastion, Transistor, and a couple of point and click adventure games. IMDB tells me he's had some bit roles in bad TV and movies in the last couple years - I guess he should have pulled his head out of his ass and taken his narrationbux while he could get them.

I don't know if I'd call Bastion's gameplay strong. It knew what it wanted to be and executed it very well, which is a kind of strength, but I would have liked a fourth slot, for special tonics or something, to make it more interesting.

ABANDON ALL HOPE

I've been playing this for a while, I haven't noticed any sjw crap other than gender selection. It doesn't seem to affect the story yet at least. The characters and story are mostly well written but it's a lot of word overload.
I've only ascended two of my people so this might change. The game has done a good job of keeping my invested though.
Gameplay's a bit basic but fun, nothing really memorable though.

Goal of the game to "ascend" as much exiles into great empire to stir up revolution in it.
Game calls it THE PLAN.

If it would be written well, it would not caused you reading overload. You would be delighted to read every page of dialogue. Yet it is written really borring about "Omg so quirky characters"

Also ascention is called getting freedom, while all exiles live in wast bountiful world, yet FREEDOM somehow can only be achieved in empire - land of freedom.

Sorry for my english, it is my third language.

Just let all world in America already so we can get FREEDOMtm and revolt.

That's more than enough filth. Trannies are disgusting and anyone that enables them needs to be shot in the head.

Also Commonwealth( that thing i called Empire ) - backwards authoritarian state, which deports everyone and even bans reading. Cause America is evil cause of lack of liberal education/indoctrination.
Most of the characters hate Commonwealth and have bad memories about living there.

This is reason why EVERYONE in exile wants to ascend into America and create revolution there.

There's a difference between education and liberal education, but sandalwood, is armstrong teir with his vision of freedom, where every man is able to live his own way not afraid of the consequences. I wouldn't parallel this to american liberals, since it's not masturbating socialism, just trying to get rid of it's 1984 government that evidently wasn't working.

I don't think there's any real leftist shit, it seems more libertarian if anything.

>There's a difference between education and liberal education, but sandalwood, a teacher.
I need to double check what I'm writing jesus fuck

Nah, fuck off, we're full.

I would agree with you but they all DESPERATLY WANT to get into Commonwealth and they call process of getting into Commonwealth - ASCENTION and FREEDOM.

If creators did not wanted to portray western world by Commonwealth, they would not portray Commonwealth as VERY DESIRABLE.

If story had a shred of integrity, people would massivly leave Commonwealt and let it rot. As all lands outside commonwealth is pretty livable, there are societies and resources outside of it.

I do not see why creators would display such THIRST to get into Commonwealth by EVERYONE, but to push political message.

Imagine 1984 society disidents would be alowed to live in free land during exile, and such people while builded their free societies in exile still want to get back into hell itself.

Sorry aggain for all typos and mistakes.
Non native speaker.

Politics derails yet another thread.

I know. It bad was bad joke on my part.
Liberals often portray opposition as uneducated ILLITERATE knukleheads.
You can often hear sentiment from them, that if you'll let Republicans rule, they will start burning books imidiately.

And while I see why both sides may want to restrict information in some way, and ban SOME books, but I still think it is reaching to push story with complete literacy ban. And yes I have read Fahrenheit 451.

tldr: There are too too many too huge plotholes to attribute them only to writers lazyness.

fix

I don't really see it that way, the commonwealth is the only place where people can live reliably. The underberg place changes people, with people who are lost becoming demons, among other things. It's evident that it changes people, probably in more ways than we even know.

discussion of the games politics isn't derailing, fuckface.

Which gives them superstrenght and super long lifespan.

I for one will chose 500 years in some hardships and challanges, than to live 80 years in comfort.

From what little I've seen of the game I can't say I really fault the commonwealth for banning reading considering readers can seemingly easily banish people to the basketball dimension.

Even cboyardee is ruining his vidcon with sjw tripe

Only because more time you get, more can be done meaningfull in the world, and mere personal growth can be made.

Also thank you for taking time to have a discussion. It means a lot to me.

My sides!

On serious note, in this universe reading can be regulated, insted of giving it entirely in hands of exiles.
Stupid move on part of Commonwealth.

Also I bet after revolution everyone wold be able to read in Commonwelth, more so it will be teached to everyone. Even banshies( to summon lucifier)

Please explain how has anything to do with the fucking game. Fuck off.

In this post i speak only about game lore:

Also in this particular post I talk ONLY about game lore and writers of game.

I point out inconsistency about *wanting to go in the place you despise*. Talking about world of the game.

If not for the image my post may be written in any reality or environment.

Well, actually, having dwarf as a gender can be construed as genderless, from the old fantasy trope of there being no dwarf women. But Eunuch being considered a gender (or lack thereof) would be offensive to an SJW.

There's no 1984 or western world in the games lore. Don't even bullshit me. The post you replied to was also directly rooted in real world events. In a fictional universe there is no western world nor a 1984 and unless Pyre has real world names like America I don't see why it needs to be discussed here. In any case the thread's fucked. We could have discussed gameplay.

I happily disscus it with you. I believe it has many great and unique mechanics. As well as flaws.

As I disagree about including tangential art and stories in duscussion about game story or art.

You know just as well as I do that the second you start discussing anything tangential it will attract faggots who push it off topic.. You can easily discuss the story/lore without resorting to real world examples.

I do not see problem with many seperate disscussions in one thread.
This is slow thread.
If you would wish to talk about mechanics, you could easily done so, and you'll get replies.
Instead you desided to talk about board politics.

If creators thought that story is not important, they would just create game without story.

I believe we can disscus dozen of topics related to this game and all would be heard and talked to.

I do not see a reason why we cannot ponder on game creators message. I believe that jften message of any game is most important thing to it creator.

Yet I am still open to talk about OTHER aspects of the game. Because in this thread, you are the only one who talks with me not about the game, but about discussion etics.

No that was you. Also
Fuck off. It's only meta discussion because you were retarded enough to discuss meta political concepts. The threads dead now and it's obvious it wasn't because of the game. Seriously faggot it's a game first and a story second. Lurk more to understand where the priority discussion should be or fuck off.

I think the game is fun amd charming and I wish I had more time to play it to give a more firm opinion aside from Bae is best girl.

thread was dead long before, nigga.

Do you mean Rhae you flaming faggot?

...

LOL

This guy does not wrote a single word about the game in entire thread:

Hence why I saged. I only forgot that last post because I refreshed my browser.

why the fuck are you even here then

So what the fuck is the gameplay and is it actually good? Bastion was fun, then Transistor had a good idea but failed in execution while trying really hard to not be Bastion. What is this game doing now?

Magical Rugby in between segments of Visual Novel

he said he was being cautious about it. that means he isn't stupid about how he spends his money. plenty of other replies already explained why it's smart to be cautious of telltale signs of failure.

Its a pretty cool magic soccer game with light rpg mechanics and a well done linear story.

You seem to have a lot of misconceptions about the game's setting.

The Downside is not a nice place to live. It's basically described as Australia on magic steroids, complete with deadly environmental hazards and fauna. It's very telling that the only settlement in the game is a shack next to a toxic swamp that was formed by the death of an elder thing. The Downside is more of a separate dimension than another country. The only way to leave is through a literal ascension from a magic upside-down waterfall.

The people in the Downside are not immigrants, they're exiles. Most of them want to return to the Commonwealth because it's their home. Not all the exiles are criminals, and the ones that are are only there because they pissed off the wrong corrupt politician. Demons are just large humans with horns gained due to living several years in the Downside. There's no mention of long life.

"Reading" isn't just basic literacy. As pointed out, it's banned because of the magic ability that reading grants. It's also not universally banned, as some people who are in the government are capable of reading without risk of exile.

...

What is actually wrong with you people?

It's an enjoyable magic sports-ball game with elements of rugby and basketball. People just getting mad triggered by a pronoun choice and a setting because they are hypersensitive to anything and everything that isn't according to their redpilled vision of the truth, even in a fantasy fictional setting. I'm honestly shocked there isn't more posts about Jodarial and… -ae playing alongside guys.

It's not like they spend any time on it. No one in the story is canon trans, no one else is called by 'they', never is it brought up as an issue, and the game instead focuses on what 'freedom' means and whether a life in a dangerous, horrible place is worthwhile if it means you're not in a terrible orwellian nightmare or if you're better off trying to revolutionize a broken system that you once called home. That's literally the crux of the lore. People are just way too happy to try and see outrage and horrible things that… frankly are not there.

1/10 got me to reply

Well I picked it up since I figured I liked Transistor and Bastion enough and I gotta say this ball bullshit feels a lot fucking worse than either of those games
It feels like they didn't learn anything from Transistor about how gimmicky gameplay can be a negative so they just turned the knob to 11 and on top of that they got worse at balance and polish. It's a shame they seem to be so insistent on making each game so different from the last because not only would Transistor's pseudo turn based shit would have actually worked great for controlling a whole team at once but on a broader level they can never apply lessons learned from the previous games so every one has the same negative side effects of indie growing pains or whatever.

Oh and I also forgot to mention
Who the fuck thought that was a good idea?

git gud
What? Half the characters only turn decent after getting 2-3 abilities.
Altho the shit where you get banished for no reason is real bullshit, it seems to happen most in the ice stage where you push shit around.

I've tried pretty hard to find some use for the wyrm knight and even with some upgrades he just doesn't seem any good. His tail slice thing is clunky and can't do much of anything unless the AI decides to be really aggressive, which is like the opposite of the point of the aura attacks, and if you want a defensive person you're better off with Jodariel or the imp because their auras are large enough for passive defense as well as active. He's an okay runner but his jump feels really clunky and he can't throw the ball for shit so I'd rather use Rukey or Gray girl who gets decent carrier abilities.
The imp and harpy also seem just head and shoulders above everyone else, having decent to great aura sizes, good speed, good attacks, and being able to fly over everything for as long as they can is just so insanely good.

Also once you get past the first liberation rite the game kind of instantly becomes far less interesting, the story is seemingly all laid out so there's nothing to look forward to, the visual novel/choose your own adventure bits become way shorter with only one choice and often almost no dialogue before each rite so the pacing feels fucked, and the feeling of it being a long road trip of friends goes out the window with the flight shit and the interesting world being rendered down to just a straight line. It feels like the game is functionally over and now it's just going through the motions to repeat the same matches over and over until I hammer out enough liberations to see the ending.

I think out of their three games Bastion is still the best, as while it's not very ambitious or complex it's competently crafted and does what it sets out to do. Transistor split its focus between the action gameplay and the tactical gameplay and neither was developed enough to satisfy and the same goes for Pyre. If you like visual novels there isn't enough of that to be satisfactory, if you like sports games it's not really deep enough to satisfy, and if you like both there's not a good balance between them.

The more I play of this the more I'm convinced there must be no one left at the studio who worked on Bastion because there was a lot more going on in that games levels and yet it didn't have even a fraction as many bugs as this.

4/v/ is full of cancer but jesus have 8/v/ posters gone off the fucking deep end.

Are you using the sasha orb items? Wyrm knight is basically useless without his, and you gotta time the slashes just outside of the enemy's aura. His throwing's pretty funky but i think it may have some actual use, i dunno though.
Imp i agree is pretty top tier, but harp is rather shite later on and frankly Volfred (the sap) and Bertrude (the bog crone) are more OP, in particular with their beyonder orb items

I really agree about everything else though. Past the first liberation rite there are some interesting points True Nightwings for example but a lot of the mystery is gone and all you really have left is the book's lore. Wish they'd just made an amazing 4 hour game like Bastion again instead of a amazing for 4 hours then mediocre for another 4 game

That said i really hope they make online for this, because the sports part of the game is genuinely pretty hype and the AI is easy to cheese even with all titan stars on. Doubt they will even bother though

It's a real shame they're trying so hard to make every game unique by relying on some weird gimmick. Transistor looked genuinely fun, I bought it after enjoying Bastion and it turned out that the gameplay was really lacklustre. The singing and flourish buttons were completely useless and combat was really vapid. I thought it was going to be similar to Bastion with the combat being real time and having a focus on dodging and mixing up your arsenal, but it was some weird turn-based mess. I beat the game, but it wasn't a fun ending. The final battle was against someone with the same powers as you and was pretty frustrating with him always landing a first hit on you.

The worlds they've made are interesting but they never expand on them. I'd have enjoyed another entry in the Bastion world over them coming up with some pseudo-digital realm that isn't properly explained and ends with what appears to be the main character unleashing an apocalypse/giving in and dying.

The art in these games are always great, and the character designs are generally unique and memorable. I haven't heard the soundtrack for Pyre but I'm sure it'd be good after Transistor and Bastion delivered.

Real sad to hear that this game is following in Transistor's footsteps by relying on gimmick combat. They could do so much better if they refocused their efforts on kicking goals instead of avoiding the same success Bastion saw. They'll forever be known as the studio who made Bastion at this rate.

I tried out Gilman's reward talisman but his jump feels so fucky with or without it that I just switched him back to the % chance of instant respawn thing. For whatever reason with him and a few others I'll frequently jump clean through the pyre without it registering.
I've only done one rite with the True Nightwings so far and it did nothing for me, maybe because it ended up being the buggiest rite I've experienced but also because the AI was just being ultra faggoty spamming perfect aura blasts at me every time I stopped to try and shoot at them. I shudder to think how bad online play would be considering how poorly the game manages to keep things working properly with just one player and no latency related problems.

Does this game have NG+ or not? re-ran the last rite using different options to see how the ending changes and I just want to play the thing again without having to switch save slots

tbh i'm getting really confused reading about all the bugs in these thread, maybe it's because it runs very mildly laggy in my machine but the only really aggravating one i've encountered is banishing at random which happens very rarely
The AI does spam perfect aura blasts a lot but frankly beating them at their own game is pretty satisfying. Oralech in particular is a real fucking bitch that dashes all the time but beating him just by jumping past him to the pyre over and over felt amazing. Shame the game is so buggy though, the magic basketball had a lot of potential.

what was >>13111461 ?

can't find out, archive.8ch is down

Dropped. Guaranteed shit.

This. A true gamer doesn't care about story, graphics or anything but pure gameplay.

Teebs finally put up a WTF on it!

I remember when I first played Bastion, and I thought "man, I never want to see another story in this setting because it'll never be as good." Now I find myself wondering why they don't make another Bastion game because, as you said, their efforts since then seem shaky at best. I suppose I'll just watch a playthrough on YouTube instead of even bothering to pirate it.

Like, shit, the Kid's Dream is still one of the best monologues I've ever heard in a video game, and it was just one combat arena. Same with the narrator ruefully telling the story of Caelondia's Mancers playing with the forces of creation in Colford Cauldron - it's small stuff, but the entire game was made of small stuff done well. Transistor didn't have anything that impactful, and I doubt Pyre will, either.

Your standard pic related. "oh, wow, you guys are writing this game off just because of some pronoun bullshit! i can't imagine being that offended and buttblasted about a single word! imagine being that petty about politics!" Obviously some faggot who hasn't paid attention to the industry for the last five years.

Now this is how you get (you)s.

...

The sports-part is fun to play, but the visual novel part is boring sometimes. Aside from unnecessary inclusion of "they" as a pronoun, there isn't anything progressive in the game at all maybe only an autistic party member. The soundtrack is enjoyable and visual design is good as always, the characters are a bit shallow, but all in all, the game is quite enjoyable.

Jodariel a cute

I had started warming up to him again before the trap controversy.

Nope. He can go back to Bongistan and get his cancer treatment from the NHS.
Faggot wants US taxpayers to pay for his shitty eating habits. Fuck that.

Because traps are gay.

I don't give a shit about sports and I don't give a shit about fake magic sports.

All I want out of this game is porn of the horned chick being ridden HARD. Grab the bull by the horns bruh.

Futa or bust.
